Real Haunted House

Banff Springs Hotel

Banff, Alberta

In the 1920s, a young bride was descending the spiral staircase from the bridal suite, en route to her wedding. On the way, her long, flowing dress was set ablaze by the candles lining the staircase. While attempting to extinguish the flames, she slipped, falling down the staircase and resultantly breaking her neck. Employees of the hotel have reportedly heard strange noises emanate from the bridal suite when it is not being occupied. They have also seen a figure in a long, flowing dress descending the stairs. The dress of the apparition will then catch on fire, and the figure will vanish.

Sure Looran:

In the month of January 2005, myself and another night time security guard were walking through the Conservatory. The conservatory is located in the back of the hotel, 2nd Public floor near the Rundle lounge. The Conservatory is also conveniently located near the “Burning Bride Stair Case”. The Conservatory has two public access points: The main doors, and a hallway lined with mirrors. I was walking down the hallway with my partner 10 feet behind me. I looked at the mirrors and saw my reflection along with my partners reflection. I also saw a third reflection further down the mirrors. The figure stood there. I glanced back at my partner and then looked at where the reflection was. It was no longer there. We ran into the Conservatory lounge area but saw no one. And no signs of anyone being there. Thing like that happened to each of us that worked nights there. Usually when you least expect it.

My husband and I stayed at the Banff Springs hotel in 1997. We had heard the story of the bride who caught fire and fell down the stairs. They had the stairway blocked off. After having dinner one night I convinced my husband to take my picture on that staircase. We returned home, I had my photos developed and was looking through them. The picture that was taken on the staircase, had several bright white orbs blocking most of me on the staircase. On the step that I was stepping down on, had two little white orbs on the step. When I saw this I got chills. I felt like it was the bride and she didn’t like me up there. I thought maybe it could be the flashing on the camera or something so I took it to a photo place and they couldn’t explain it. I never sent the photo to the hotel but I’m thinking about it.

I visited my brother who’s living in Calgary, and we decided to make a day trip to Banff. We took a tour into the hotel and it was amazing from inside. It became dark so we decided to just sleep in the car and next morning head back to Calgary. We parked somewhere near the hotel, by the river where you can see the water falls. At around 3:00am I woke up on the sound of very loud human footsteps, just came like a snap very near to the car, to wake me and my brother instantly. We couldn’t see or hear anything later, and we couldn’t sleep either. I just knew today from this site that the hotel is haunted, and I believe the area surrounding it too!

I have just started working at fairmont and I was aware of the stories of it being haunted before I started working there.

I’m kind of dissapointed as I wanted to experience something, anything.
but as I must admit some of the rooms are quite creepy and very old I havnt experienced anything related to these stories such as the bellman sam appearing or anything.

The closest Thing would be my co worker tells me sometimes when she is working in the store alone the doorbell will go off on its own.

I even went up the the room with the room missing to ‘feel something’ as I’m normally quite sensitive to those kinds of things but I got nothing.

The room with the dance hall and the huge painting , overlooking the court yard freaks me out like nobodys buisness though ..always feel like that painting is watching me

But the dancehall with the huge painting of the man overlooking the court yard creeps me out like nobodys buisnes..i always feel like that painting is watching me

Kath, I get the same feeling from that painting. I was there for a wedding last summer. Lots of cold spots on the 9th floor. I am planning on heading there in the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait:)
Love this hotel!

It’s a beautiful hotel. Stayed there on 2 separate occasions with my husband and our 2 kids. Never experienced anything paranormal at all so I believe it’s all nonsense and a bunch of made up stories. Had a great time!

I stayed at the Banff Springs with my parents this summer and I don’t know if there are natural reasons for what we experienced but see what you think. My mom and I went up to 873 and my mom wanted to take a photo of me standing there. I leaned closer to the wall and heard what sounded like a TV left on, I could sort of hear words but not sure what was said. When we were leaving, we looked at a photo shot by digital camera and there were two joined orbs (dust?) and one larger and faint orb over my head, and up on the ceiling was a small mist, but you have to zoom in. We didn’t want to stay up there. We saw a room numbered 666 on the way to a friend’s room, and when we were sleeping the closet door opened all the way by itself because you have to push that door open, I didn’t see any vents facing it. My mom swore that she closed the door but it was wide open when we woke up. I remember my parents asking me if I got up and went to the closet but I was as surprised as them. Taking a look in Mt. Stephens one evening felt sort of creepy, maybe because of the red glow from candles in there but something else I felt. One experience happened when I was riding the elevator back to my room, it skipped my floor and went to the 6th, I don’t remember seeing the other people in there selecting that floor. I enjoyed staying at this beautiful hotel, as creepy as it can be in some areas. If you ever stay on the 5th floor, try the smoked salmon :)

Room 873. I read somewhere that room 873 was a restroom and connected to two adjacent closets. When the restrooms were no longer needed it was sealed up. However I have only read that version once. Does anyone know when the murders took place? Are there police reports/newspaper articles about it? And my biggest question, which would help determine wether or not it used to be a hotel room is the view from the outside! On the outside walls of the hotel there should be a window for that room. Is there one there? If not is there a large gap between windows of 872 and 874?

I was there for the past three days and I’ll tell you what. I like pushing my own button for the elevator going up to my room and it did seem kind of odd having the elevator door open up as I was walking up to push the call button. All I need is the hair on the back of my neck standing up to decide on never going back to that hotel. Good-bye Banff Springs :)

I just got back from a conference at the Banff Springs hotel. We went looking for room 873 and sure enough, it doesn’t exist. You can plainly see where a door used to be because of a baseboard replacement.
The next night I was outside at the rear of the hotel and it was pitch black. We counted up to the eighth floor and all the lights were on (it was around 10pm) except for two windows near where 873 would be. We worked under the theory of “if it’s closed off, then no lights would be on”. But about a half hour later we were on our way back inside and I noticed a faint blue glow and flickers – like a tv was on – in those windows. It was bright in one room and like it reached into the other window. Theory – the room was closed off to make another room bigger.
On Thursday we took the guided tour of the hotel and after all was done, my colleague asked the tour guide (who has worked there for fifty years) if it “was true about 873″. He said “it is, but not what you’re thinking”. Turns out, 873 was closed up, divided in two to make the two rooms on either side bigger. No murder, no ghosts, nada.
Case closed

We stayed at the Fairmont Banff Springs this Christmas, 2011. I can confirm Room 873 has been covered over to look like it never existed.Tap the wall and find out! The door entrance light still remains where it used to before the door was closed in.
