Speke Hall
During the Protestant Reformation, tunnels were dug from this house to the nearby River Mersey, to allow priests to escape to Ireland via a boat if necessary. Even today, these holes are still visible. Allegedly, a woman, devastated by the actions of her philandering husband, killed herself and then her baby. Many people have reported feeling cold spots, while others have reportedly seen spirits of the agonized woman.

Reading some of Mr. Tom Slemen’s articles about “haunted Liverpool”, I recently learned about a story (initially I was going to write “THE story”, but I reconsidered - you’ll soon find out why) of one Maude Mooney (1890 - 1971), daughter of the caretaker at Speke Hall in 1901, and her “lover” from the distant past.
Now, the story in itself is beautiful and touching and what-not - but it struck me as… just not right. So I tried to find some more information about the gal. Nothing: all the relevant Google “hits” referred to Mr. Slemen’s website.
Bad sign.
So I pressed on, less and less convinced… I went to a huge genealogy database (Familysearch) and spent a good deal of time searching for the said Maud (or Maude).
I don’t know how complete the online British public records are, but I could find no individual in the database that would confirm even the existence of said Maud(e) - or her mother or her father, as named in Slemen’s article “Born Too Late”.
So I’ve come here… Has anyone ever heard about the story in question - I mean INDEPENDENTLY from Mr. Slemen’s article?

I immediately looked at the other children, smiling, thinking it was a sound effect used to scare us but the others were oblivious and looked ahead. I don’t really take Tom Sleman seriously but I did ask his about it and he told me of a case about a time slip! So I’ve tried occasionally to look into the history of the grounds at Speke and at the monastic buildings that once stood locally…but I haven’t had much luck. Does anyone know of any such buildings that were near to the hall?
