Speke Hall
During the Protestant Reformation, tunnels were dug from this house to the nearby River Mersey, to allow priests to escape to Ireland via a boat if necessary. Even today, these holes are still visible. Allegedly, a woman, devastated by the actions of her philandering husband, killed herself and then her baby. Many people have reported feeling cold spots, while others have reportedly seen spirits of the agonized woman.

A friend of mine worked at Speke Hall at one time. She never told any story about the woman and baby but was convinced that the place was haunted.

Well, here the story goes,,,,
Apparently there WAS a philanthrapist husband, but word goes that he set his sights on a maid. (Basically if the “men of the house” decide they want the maids then thats the way it goes and if the maid gets pregnant then thats her own fault & would be given leave without reference)
Anyway, the husband got the maid pregnant & through her own distress put the baby down the thunderbolt (the toilet, which is a straight drop down into the moat), where of course the baby died & the maid then commited suicide in the great hall. It is said that the spirit of the maid is often felt wandering around the house.

I live close to speke hall and have visited a few times. On my latest visit last summer i asked the staff which i could find whether they had ever saw anything within the house these tunnels or the surrounding grounds, some of these people had worked there for over 20 years. The reply to my question from all of the staff was NO, some further explained ‘nor have they ever felt uncomfortable within the house or heard strange noises. o yeah and the ladies name was Sarah!

I visited Speke hall with my daughter and neice who were four and six at the time. After roaming the house quite excitedly they reached one of the bedrooms, their excited expressions quickly changed to expressions of horror and both girls refused to enter the room. My daughter pulled on my sleeve and asked if we could leave as she could hear wispering coming from the empty room. As you can imagine…I didn’t hesitate.

I used to spend a lot of time at Speke hall as a child that was in the days when you could get in the grounds without having to pay. If there ever was any ghosts at the hall they probably got out of Speke like I did.

I made a few visits to Speke Hall,on one school visit with Harrison Jones school when i was about 10yrs old,a lad and i thought it would be funny to lay on the monks bed,all of a sudden the felt tangible with hatred..Scared us half to death, but not as much as our teacher,Mrs Foster, did when she caught us laying there! Lol. If anyone has any local ghostly happenings to tell me about, could u please email me?Would love to share stories.. Thanks. galacticwarrior@o2.co.uk
