Speke Hall
During the Protestant Reformation, tunnels were dug from this house to the nearby River Mersey, to allow priests to escape to Ireland via a boat if necessary. Even today, these holes are still visible. Allegedly, a woman, devastated by the actions of her philandering husband, killed herself and then her baby. Many people have reported feeling cold spots, while others have reportedly seen spirits of the agonized woman.

The note was on my answering machine it said, stop pedro!cause he used the bathroom on my rug.And she does`nt stop running up and down the stairs but i dont mind having a room mate. Her name is hannah and had heart failure.

I am not a sceptic and I do believe in paranormal occurences and stuff but this story sounds just like every other ghost story you hear, along with grey ladies. It just sounds a bit OTT. There may well be a lot of spirit activity going on in Speke Hall and of course it has a lot of history but I just don’t buy this.

I am a hard-boiled skeptic AND I also know that the so-called “paranormal” most definitely exists. (Yes, you can be both – and many people are.)
Reading some of Mr. Tom Slemen’s articles about “haunted Liverpool”, I recently learned about a story (initially I was going to write “THE story”, but I reconsidered – you’ll soon find out why) of one Maude Mooney (1890 – 1971), daughter of the caretaker at Speke Hall in 1901, and her “lover” from the distant past.
Now, the story in itself is beautiful and touching and what-not – but it struck me as… just not right. So I tried to find some more information about the gal. Nothing: all the relevant Google “hits” referred to Mr. Slemen’s website.
Bad sign.
So I pressed on, less and less convinced… I went to a huge genealogy database (Familysearch) and spent a good deal of time searching for the said Maud (or Maude).
I don’t know how complete the online British public records are, but I could find no individual in the database that would confirm even the existence of said Maud(e) – or her mother or her father, as named in Slemen’s article “Born Too Late”.
So I’ve come here… Has anyone ever heard about the story in question – I mean INDEPENDENTLY from Mr. Slemen’s article?

My family and i have lived in Speke most of our lives an the story of Speke Hall an the Lady in the Woods is different from what has been commented on, on this site. One evening the man of the house had gone to play cards and lost the deeds to the house on his return home he told his wife of their plight and in dismay she tossed their baby out of the bedroom window and into the moat she then committed suicide herself. The cradle that the baby slept in is still in the bedroom now and it’s said that the 1st and last person to enter the room can hear the baby crying and see the cradle rock.

I have heard the same story as Rachel (last comment) that the deeds to the house were lost in a card game and then the mother threw the baby out of the window then killed herself. I have been to Speke Hall many as it is not far from where I live and I can that I am a sceptic but I have had a couple of weird experiences there. I was in the bedroom with the very ornately decorated bed when I felt someone push me in the small of my back, when I turned thinking it was my friend there was no one behind me andno one was close enough to push me without me seeing them move.

there was a teacher of mine that used to work there. And he told all of the class a story one day about him and his friend were cleaning down the stairs when they heard a little cryen sound they thought it might of been a cat but when they went up to check there was nothink there. Tey went back down the stairs and they heard it again they never found out were it was cuming from but deep down he belives it was the little baby that died in speak hall

Hi,
We Live in Woolton in Liverpool and have been to Speke Hall many of times. The staff there have told us that nobody knows why there is a cradle in the house as the Lady who owned it never had a baby….dispite all the stories that are told about the house.
I think it is put there for effect to add a little mystery to the place and encourage people to visit.

About 25 years ago when I was seven or eight, the school took us on a day out to the hall and we were told the story of a Mary Norris who on discovering her husband had lost the deeds of the House, threw her baby out into the moat fearing that he would turn out to be like his Father. I’m not sure whether it was in this bedroom, I think it may have been a blue bedroom (?), that I heard very clearly, the sound of monks chanting.
I immediately looked at the other children, smiling, thinking it was a sound effect used to scare us but the others were oblivious and looked ahead. I don’t really take Tom Sleman seriously but I did ask his about it and he told me of a case about a time slip! So I’ve tried occasionally to look into the history of the grounds at Speke and at the monastic buildings that once stood locally…but I haven’t had much luck. Does anyone know of any such buildings that were near to the hall?

Well, why cant we and ghosts get along?…seriously! Maybe, If they happen to be aggresive ghosts, get an exorcist, if they are not aggresive, chances are they don’t care and you should just respect them.
