Adobe House

07.23.2005 | 10:29 pm | Shafter, Texas, United States

Locals say that long ago a young woman and her daughter lived in the house. After marrying a soldier in Pancho Villas Army, the woman and her daughter were frequently abused. On particular night, the inebriated man began to beat the woman to death. As she was knocking at deaths door, her daughter came into the room. The soldier, then grabbed the child and threw her into a wall, breaking her back. Enraged, the young woman gathered enough strength to shoot the man in his face. As he fell, an oil lamp collapsed, setting the woman ablaze. Engulfed in flames, the woman went into the next room and held her daughter until they both died. It is said that if one goes to the house on cloudy nights, lays face down, and says “Mama” three times, the smell of burning flesh will arrive. Burned footprints will also appear in the floor.

  2. No. This sounds like an urban legend. Like the “Bloody Mary or Candy man”. I believe the story could be based off of actual events, but I don’t believe if you say mamma three times and lay face down on the ground you’ll smell burned flesh, the only thing you’ll probley smell is some bad old carpet.

    Comment by laura | 11.20.2005 | 4:15 pm

  9. I was told you have to turn all the lights out, shut the door, and look into a mirror and say Bloody Mary 100 times and you’ll see her face. But that’s beside the point here.

    This..might be an urban legend, but I think I’d still sacrifice a little dignity and try it. You never know. Only if I had someone with me, though. I’m a coward -.-;

But believe me, if you are actually stupid enough to try it you *seem* to see things… To Shelton’s comment about this all being Sh** well, according to the people who *claim* to see ghosts the **are** everywhere. Just because you don’t believe doesn’t mean you should put other people down for it… Plus THESE STORIES ARE SO MUCH FUN TO READ BECAUSE OF THERE WEIRD CREEPINESS!!! Ok? Anywho, this story was pretty fun to read…

  27. I agree with the idea that this sounds much like an urban legend. However, we shouldn’t really judge things unless we’ve actually experienced them. As for all the people making the negative comments, I really feel you should educate yourself; maybe just enough to be able to spell words such as “ACCENT”, “WONDER” & “TYPE”. Don’t get me wrong; I’m no genius, but atleast I think I can make sense. As for Shelton, if this website is a waste of your time, what are you doing looking through it? I would think a person as intelligent as yourself would have an abundance of other “smart” things to do. Well, like I said I’m no genius, I just have an opinion like you.

  33. I thought the place caught on fire,wouldn’t that home have been cleaned up or destroyed after something like that happened? and the burning smell is probably from the smoke that was in the house, if it smells like burning flesh there would be so much puke im sure.

  35. Some people belive that ghosts are around because they are spirits who dont know there gone, or can’t move on so Shelton, they would not be everywhere. Even if it is fake it’s cool to hear stories like this to pass on to other people. I’m getting kinda tired of always hearing bloody mary or candyman when we tell ghost storys.

I doubt anyone would be able to find this house, it may not even exist anymore. but its a really cool place to explore, even more so if you know the history.

  67. Shafter does exist and indeed, it is a ghost town. The town is surrounded by mountains and a small clear stream of water trickles thru it. It is a beautiful place despite the ruins that are still fighting the elements. Back in the early 1900’s, Shafter was a thriving silver-mining town with more than 2,000 people making their homes there. The mines became flooded with an underground river and the operation halted to a complete stop. Most of the workers went west in search of a new life. Only a handful stayed behind and somehow managed to survive the great depression. Now there are less than 30 people living there. Most of the residents are in the education field and make their daily 19-mile descent south to the town of Presidio to teach. The town’s catholic church is still standing and has services twice a month. The cemetary is the biggest attraction with hundreds of graves that are enclosed in an area the size of a football field. I am not familiar with the story told here, however, something terrible did occur in Shafter more than 100 years ago and many individuals can attest having experienced disturbing events while touring the ghost town. The town’s residents will not comment on the happenings but it is clearly evident that they know more to it. I must warn you, DO NOT WADE YOUR FEET IN THE CREEK IN NOVEMBER!

  77. Actually part of that story is true. There was a couple who had a child and lived in the house. The man was named Juan Augustine Ramone who was originally under the command of Venustiano Carranza before the band joined forces with Pacho Villa. On his return home from the war he was known as a good man around the community and later was shot at and wounded by a man who held a grudge from his days in Pancho Villa’s army. The family moved away not long after the shooter was arrested and sent to prison. There was a small house fire on the property at the time of Juan and his wife lived there, but no life was taken in the fire and the area’s in the house that were fire damaged were quickly rebuilt with help from some of the members of the surrounding community. I actually heard this story from Rafe Ramone who I served with in the Army. I was told that for many years its been told in his family that the house was haunted at the time his ancestor lived there.
