Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Adobe House

Shafter, Texas

Locals say that long ago a young woman and her daughter lived in the house. After marrying a soldier in Pancho Villas Army, the woman and her daughter were frequently abused. On particular night, the inebriated man began to beat the woman to death. As she was knocking at deaths door, her daughter came into the room. The soldier, then grabbed the child and threw her into a wall, breaking her back. Enraged, the young woman gathered enough strength to shoot the man in his face. As he fell, an oil lamp collapsed, setting the woman ablaze. Engulfed in flames, the woman went into the next room and held her daughter until they both died. It is said that if one goes to the house on cloudy nights, lays face down, and says “Mama” three times, the smell of burning flesh will arrive. Burned footprints will also appear in the floor.

I just visited Shafter texas on a hiking trip up the mountains there and the entire town is a ghost town. there are only 2 to 3 walls still standing per house. I doubt anyone would be able to find this house, it may not even exist anymore. but its a really cool place to explore, even more so if you know the history.

i really didnt understand what the woman shot him in the face with? was she hiting a small gun under her dress? i just didnt get it. another thing is why did the young daughter just stand and watch her mother get beat to death? i love my mother to death and would kill who ever was beating her not just stand there, no matter how young i was. But it was a way crazy story for what it was!

Shafter does exist and indeed, it is a ghost town. The town is surrounded by mountains and a small clear stream of water trickles thru it. It is a beautiful place despite the ruins that are still fighting the elements. Back in the early 1900’s, Shafter was a thriving silver-mining town with more than 2,000 people making their homes there. The mines became flooded with an underground river and the operation halted to a complete stop. Most of the workers went west in search of a new life. Only a handful stayed behind and somehow managed to survive the great depression. Now there are less than 30 people living there. Most of the residents are in the education field and make their daily 19-mile descent south to the town of Presidio to teach. The town’s catholic church is still standing and has services twice a month. The cemetary is the biggest attraction with hundreds of graves that are enclosed in an area the size of a football field. I am not familiar with the story told here, however, something terrible did occur in Shafter more than 100 years ago and many individuals can attest having experienced disturbing events while touring the ghost town. The town’s residents will not comment on the happenings but it is clearly evident that they know more to it. I must warn you, DO NOT WADE YOUR FEET IN THE CREEK IN NOVEMBER!

I lived in Presidio and baby sat my teachers’ son in Shafter. On Halloween we would walk the graveyard. It was always spooky, but I never heard the story about the house or even saw it. I did hear about horrible things happening because of the mine.

Actually part of that story is true. There was a couple who had a child and lived in the house. The man was named Juan Augustine Ramone who was originally under the command of Venustiano Carranza before the band joined forces with Pacho Villa. On his return home from the war he was known as a good man around the community and later was shot at and wounded by a man who held a grudge from his days in Pancho Villa’s army. The family moved away not long after the shooter was arrested and sent to prison. There was a small house fire on the property at the time of Juan and his wife lived there, but no life was taken in the fire and the area’s in the house that were fire damaged were quickly rebuilt with help from some of the members of the surrounding community. I actually heard this story from Rafe Ramone who I served with in the Army. I was told that for many years its been told in his family that the house was haunted at the time his ancestor lived there.
