Been there, felt nothing but out of breath after walking up the “12 degree” hill. It felt like 90 degrees.

why would anyone spend the night there?!?!?!

Drina says:

October 11, 2005, 12:30 am

I agree why spend the night? Who the hell figured spent the night and figured this out?

Noctum says:

October 15, 2005, 10:41 pm

Meh you can’t spend the night there it’s a hazard the place should not even be allowed to send tours through. I mean hell when I was there in the 4th grade half the island was closed to the public because of saftey hazards.

As to ghost in Alcatraz I’m sure there could be a lot better stories one could come up with for this besides shaking cells.

katie says:

This is actually very true. I know that it is because my brother spent the night there about 10 years ago. He is a contractor, and was hired to restore some buildings that are not open to the public. He worked there for quite a while, and one evening the groundskeeper asked if he would like to stay overnight. He stayed in what was supposedly Al Capones cell. He was very scared to stay there, but was also very curious. Once he decided to settle in, and try to get some sleep it took many hours until he began to finally doze off, when he was awoken by some sort of a banging noise. It began far away, and got closer and closer. He said it was as if a security guard was walking along, banging his club on the bars. The noise got closer and closer until it stopped right infront of the cell he was in and then he heard several Very Loud bangs on the bars of the cell and then it all just stopped. Needless to say he never was able to fall asleep that night. He lie awake the whole night and was out of there on the first ferry the next morning.

I was an Oakland Ca cop from 1989-2000. I got to know a bunch of guys from San Francisco and the coast guard. Long story short, a guy knew a guy who worked as a ranger at the rock. Once a month, he would let about six-eight people stay past closing time. It cost 75 bucks. No break for me being a cop. He had food (b-b-q) and you brought your own booze. We slept in the cells, doors open, all in the same block, D-block, the one that leads to the door of the courtyard. We were able to sit out at night (cold, and this was September) and drink beer and just b.s. in yhr courtyard. No women, all men. Ranger didn’t want any women saying they were raped or something. I slept pretty soundly that night and didn’t hear a thing (probably all the beer and such). Two other guys said they couldn’t sleep a wink, they kept hearing noises all night. It is and OLD building, there a bound to be noises but I don’t think there are any ghosts…

Hi,
I have my own Alcatraz story.
I went there a few years ago with a Nephew of mine.
We have no interest in or even like the subject of Ghosts,Aliens etc
Find it kinda boring to be honest.
Anyhooos,,we went wandering in and around the solitary confinment cells,
Sampling the darkness with the door somewhat closed I snapped off some pics in the darkness.
Later when we were looking over the pictures we were very suprised to find a man or we thought a fellow tourist standing in the cell with me.
I did not feel or see anyone at the time there with me so I must admit I was a bit taken back by the whole thing, but time past and I not being a ghost person just forgot the whole incident.
My nephew sent it in for some kind of checking over by a photography lab and they were very intrigued.
I have a copy of the pic when people want to see it and I know its on a ghost hunters website at the moment (nephews idea)and very convincing they say.
So who knows,,I felt nothing, seen nothing, heard nothing but am at least once a year asked to tell my Alcatraz ghost story.

Erin says:

May 16, 2006, 2:21 pm

That is one of the least imaginative stories I’ve heard. People use that excuse to make up a story all the time just to make it seem like they’ve seen and or heard a ghost. That’s just so stupid says my friend a I totally agree.

Susan says:

May 16, 2006, 2:24 pm

I agree with Erin. In the old Wyoming jail we went for a school trip and people kept telling that same story, everyone uses it, it’s like way overused. When we moved to a new house my little brother kept saying that same thing. It’s getting dull peoples.

one time about twenty years ago i slept the night at alcatraz.i set up a video camera on a tripod and left it recording all night. at about midnight i heard the banging on the cells near me and it got closer and closer. soon enough it stopped at my cell. i was so scared i nearly passed out and when i came to i yelled whos there! i got up and walked to the bars and could see no one in the shadowy darkness. turning around i lit my lighter and looked to the other side of the cell and standing in the corner was an inmate staring right at me coming closer. he appeard to be a white man with his hair slicked back and he said what are you in for son? i could not reply i was to fightened…then he dissappered. when i reviewed the tape he was there the whole time walking around my cell.. i totally just made that up and scared my self while doing it hahaha

Debbie says:

I took my kids there and we are pretty perceptive as far as the ’supernatural’. However, the shower room was the only place we felt ‘uncomfortable’ and no where else.

All I have to say is….you people who claim to have spent the night at Alcatraz are lying unless you are a security gaurd that works there or something. You CANNOT pay to spend the night there. I have lived in Northern California all of my life and know you cannot do this. I even, just to be sure…wrote to Alcatraz Island. Here is their reply…

There is security that patrols the island every night – and they’ve never seen or heard anything all that odd. Many of us have spent many nights on the island – I’ve stayed in the hospital/psych ward, in the hole (D block) in the regular cells and in the basement (”dungeon”). But so far – no spooks.

Just some info for you all. Park Service employees are not allowed to comment on paranormal activities in National Parks.

But some of the stories that come out on different websites are funny to say the least. The story of the inmate who supposedly was driven to suicide because of a monster in Cell D-14 , never happened. No inmate died in the solitary cells of D-Block.

Al Capone was not haunted by the ghosts of those he had killed. Al Capone was insane from syphillis and thought he was an Italian opera singer too.

Alot of the sounds contributed to ghosts must be also contributed to the cell house being old and its normal for the place to creak and groan at night and during the day as well.

BTW , I work there and have spent the night out there many times. Not to say things DONT happen, but some of the stories are just that….stories.

TruthSeeker says:

June 22, 2006, 2:52 am

Well, I didn’t really want them to comment on any paranormal activity….I just wanted to know about people claiming to have spent the night there. Not the best answer but you can clearly see there are gaurds there patroling at night.

TruthSeeker says:

June 22, 2006, 2:55 am

I myself have been there several times and have never experienced anything strange whatsoever. I am usually pretty sensative to these things. In my opinion there is nothing there. But remember that is just because I have never felt anything there, just my opinion.

Timmy says:

June 26, 2006, 3:29 pm

I have to tell you guys something. I visited Alcatraz about 3 years ago. I walked around the jailhouse, in and out of different cells, and I kept hearing this one voice. It kept droaning on about what, I don’t know. I remember being pretty shooken up. I had to sit down, take off my self-guided tour headphones, and get some water. To this day, I have not figured out who, or what, was speaking to me…

PandaBlaze34 says:

Ghost Hunter says:

July 8, 2006, 10:15 pm

Truthseeker.

I don’t care what letter you got from who, but if you are stupid enough to believe you cant PAY to spend the night (or anywhere) there then you’ve spent way to much time living in Northern California. I apologize for being so blunt, but I did pay and I did stay there…

There’s maybe 3 people who make an ounce of sense on this comments page. Yes, people died on Alcatraz. There were murders (it was a prison!), there were inmate beatings by the guards as well… you CAN spend the night there. There are also people commenting on here that have clearly never spent any time in San Francisco. You want to know what the cold and whistling noises are? Alcatraz is an island in the San Francisco Bay, in the midst of fog and ocean air! As for hauntings, I’ve been there a few times, but only been there during the daytime, with a crowd. so I’ve not had any haunting experiences there, but it’s just as possible there as any other large building that housed a number of violent people, eh?

i think everyones is entitled to there own opinon ,i am open minded ,have an interest in ghost although i need to see for myself to believe ,don’t think all this arguing and name calling is necessary on this site ,for those that believe, more power to you , for those that don’t, the same, i think the only way to prove or disprove actual paranormal happenings is to spend a considerable amount of time in the suppossed haunted area ,whether it is a prison a house ,hospital or whatever the case maybe,if one was to gain permission to spend a certain amount of time in a paticular place they should document and record any occurences of interest and present this as evidence ,

Nate says:

They offer overnight visits. You have to pay, of course. You can sleep in the place if you’d like, in a real jail cell. Half of you nitwits have probably never even been to Alcatraz. Hell, you can’t even spell it, though the name is right in front of your face! Just goes to show you – American flag-waving yahoo’s are getting more and more STUPID!! And, by the way, yes – the place is quite haunted. I’ve been there several times and can vouch for that.

Using science and math, Efthimiou explains why it is ghosts can’t walk among us while also gliding through walls, like Patrick Swayze in the movie “Ghost.” That violates Newton’s law of action and reaction. If ghosts walk, their feet apply force to the floor, but if they go through walls they are without substance, the professor says. :taken from a news peace i saw.:…….cockbites.

We wne to Alcatraz June of 05′ and all I can say is IF it is not haunted, there IS something weird going on. Our tour was the last one (at night). We specifically purchased 2 disposable digital cameras so we could feel free to take individual, random pictures as we went along.
Well, soon after we got there, and took that incrediable steep climb, my husbands and my moods changed. We felt…irritated?? I guess.. at each other. Mad really..and for no reason.
I bring this up because that anger made us seperate for the self guided tour.
Well, seperately we took random pictures (careful to avoid contact b’cause, again, we were mad).
Neither of us felt anything scarey or haunting really at the time. It was erie maybe, but not particularly scarey.
At the end, as we boarded the boat back, we started talking about how interesting it was (no longer angry).

When I got home, I immediately took my camera to get it developed. My husband still had his.
My film turned up nothing “ghostly”. BUT, one of my pictures had a photograph of ME, taken from OUTSIDE the bars of a cell. I am standing in a cell with a look as if something caught me off guard or something.
You can clearly see the bars in front of me too!
I did not ask anyone to take my picture.

Odd, weird to say the least. I did not look at the negatives, I literally thought to myself “ok no big deal, I’ll freak if his photos are weird.

So a week or so later I got hold of his camera and, you guessed it. On his camera it had a picture of him…but in it his back is turned and he is walking AWAY from the camera!

So NOW were freaking out and we grab our negatives….

Those photos are NOT on the negatives. that photo is black.

Other than that, all the pictures are fine and our experience, amusing.

We want to go back!

Thanks for listening.

Norma – I was really intrigued by your story. I just booked a night tour and will be going there in mid-March.

Does anyone have advice on the best places to take pictures, find paranormal activity etc? I am a believer and would love to come across something. I am not sure as to how much latitude I will have being on the night tour, but I would love to capture something on camera, even just an orb…. You get the point :)

Needless to say, alcatraz sparked my interest! i booked the night tour as well on the 17th of march! i like to keep an open mind, people who can’t consider alternative possibilities of the afterlife…i feel sorry for ya, have fun in your tiny little box, er, cell.

Glenn says:

I am not sure that I would be able to spend the night somewhere like that. Not that anything would happen, but I would probably run for my life at the slightest noise….

I am excited about the night tour. From posts that I have read around the web, it looks like the D block is the place with the most supposed activity. I am going to snap a bunch of pictures, hopefully something pops up, but we’ll see.

I am interested in seeing how many people are going to be on the night tour, I am sure that it can’t be anything like the day tour… As far as I am concerned, the less people the better, I think it would add something to have less people around.

i have been ther before with my aunt, mom, cousin, and my sister.
I beileve there is such a thing as “ghosts”
To those who dont believe in them U people are Ingnorent people.
Well the story was that my cousin josie,my sis steph, and me were going to together for the self guide thing.Well for some reason my cousin Josie and me went off together to other places while my sister Steph stayed behind.Joise and I felt we should go and vist those hard concrete cells and so we did.We went around taking pictures and all that stuff.
Later on my aunt and mom told my sis Steph to go and look for us.Steph went around and went downstair to look for us.She went into the showers and she said that she was in the room and no one was in there expect a few people away in some other room. She said that she felt like something told her to get away and she said that she felt as if a hand had touched her on her shoulder and thats when she went out of there and thats when she found us upstairs. She started yelling at us because we had gone away from her. Then we all decided to go around the concrete jail cells and i beleive just to freak eachother out we went to the cells 13 and 14.We enter them and we got out.For some reason i felt like if someone was said something behind my ear in cell 14.Well we got outside and found out the last boat was about to leave and we got lucky to get the last boat.We had gotten our photos back and i believe one of the photos had some white smoke around us inside one of the jail cells.
BTW:There was a show called Unexplained Mysteries and this one guy that they called spent the night with the camera crew and investegeved there ans in the video the guy says he see this one man down the hall and he is speaking with him. After that you heard banging noise from below. They decided to leave a camera on and left it there for the night. The next day they inevesteged the tape and in the tape you see down a the hall something going closer to the camera and then dissappear.

I beileve in the paranormal!

Nice story. But seriously, if there is a ghost of some guard wouldn’t there also be a ghost of some prisoner as well? I mean with all of its cells, corridors and dungeons you’d figure there would also be some other apparition, demon or whatever.

Last October I took a small group with me on a night tour of Alcatraz. If you haven’t been there I definitely suggest you go… especially at night. It is a very spooky place. I brought with me the usual array of ghost hunting equipment but didn’t find any real conclusive proof of ghosts. I did pick up an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) of a child in cell block D. For those skeptics out there, I thought it was odd that a child would be at Alcatraz prison. I did a considerable amount of research and initially found that families including children of the guards did live at the prison, but I could find no record of a child who died there. That was until I located an article that told of an incident during the Indian take over of the island in January 1970. A child of one of the activist, Yvonne Oakes, fell to her death from a third story apartment on the island. Whether you believe or not… have fun. Ghost research is a great way to learn about history people and places. Oh by the way… Only some of the areas and building are off limits, you can spend the night there on occasion. (A troop of boy scouts had just arrived and were spending the night as I left) The Island is run by the U.S. National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz/ and they fix up building all the time.

I am very sensitive to spirits, and I can tell you there are definitely ghosts there. I was there in the daytime. Daytime, nighttime..it doesn’t matter. There are definitely numerous residents. The place where I encountered the most ghosts was in the cafeteria, and their energy was stronger there than anywhere else.

Anyways hearing about this one haunting was exciting~! : D I, myself, now wants to tour this Jail house. I just need the money to do so. Lol.
Also, if you are visiting this place please do not provoke the spirit. It seems threatend and could cause a horrific scene. Please be extremely careful roaming around this area. It’s a jail, and many tragic scences were caused there.

Can’t wait to visit myself~!: D Please be careful and extremely cautious~!0:

I dont think I would spend the night there.. It could be exciting to sleep at a haunted place, but lets not forget that the prisoners as well as guards that used to be in Alcatraz wasnt exactly sane.. Im pretty sure their ghosts will be 10 times as mental as they were when they were alive.

people who have been there and dont really think it is haunted wont have **** done to them. looking at the past of this jail there has to be some entities left. people were raped and killed. it held some of the biggest criminals. i think it is very possible for it to be haunted. but then i have never set foot on the island just saw it many times crossing the bridge. i dont know why anyone would want to spend the night alone. i have always wanted to get a group of friends and spend the night there mainly cuz i am all into the supernatural world cuz i have seen ghosts and have had unexplainable things happen to me.

Hey Everyone!
So I think SF is almost second to new orleans when it comes to haunted landmarks. I’m one of those folks who love a good spook but I can actually tell a real one from just an imagination. I’m pretty sensitive to entities and can detect their energies. Alcatraz is most positively haunted. I was there and felt some negative energies. Also, I dont think its featured on this site, but the Queen Anne hotel in SF is another place of interest for all you ghost hunters out there. A particular room called “the Mary Lake Suite” is supposed to be haunted by Miss Mary Lake herself who used to be a school teacher there. My boyfriend and I decided to stay in that room one night for fun. It was definitely a creepy experience being in that hotel. When I busted out my digi cam to take pictures, the screen went crazy on me with all these static blinks and flashes. I put on 2 sweaters and was still freezing the whole night. Then at 2:30am, the TV in our room turned on by itself and woke the both of us up. We thought it was programmed to go off at a certain time, like an alarm or something, but that wasn’t the case. We turned off the TV and went back to bed. Half an hour later, the damn radio clock went off with this creepy *** tune. Haha, we sure got our money’s worth staying there that night. Check out Queen Anne hotel you guys!

I brought my daughter to Alcatraz and when i was there i very sad feeling came over me even though there were alot of people there walking about and alot of talking going on. There was one instance where i took a picture of my daughter in a cell and my daughter said come inside mom and i did and again an overwhelming feeling of sadness that i felt it was a cell that was facing a window and light was coming in it was near the “bird man’s” cell. It could just be that the place is very gloomy and depressing especially if you go there on a day that is overcast if i was sent there i would have tried with my life to escape too.

Ansha says:

I have a scary story. In 1841, a man named James Arminstead built a house for his wife. His wife was named Giovanni de Caprica. One noght at 11:45 p.m Giovanni started screaming in her sleep. But then, she stopped. James went up to see her, but Giovanni was killed and kidnapped. James killed himself for he wanted to be with Giovanni again.

Laurel, I don’t cusing…I assume you mean using profanity? If you’re a kid, where are your parents while your cristian self is reading adults cusing?

As for Alcatraz…I’m open to it being haunted. I live in San Francisco and have visited the prison several times. It’s quite spooky, and a perfect place for the traditional idea of haunting. The suffering must have been unbearable for the prisoners and their victims. I don’t consider myself a ’sensitive’ but I am a believer in the paranormal. I’d love to spend a night at Alcatraz but the chances are slim to none. It’s a fascinating place and I hope no souls are really trapped there.

I woke up this morning, checked my email, and there was a missive from Buddie Lee who said he worked for TAPS. His spelling, tone and language makes me think TAPS is ****. I’d spend a night on Alcatraz. I live in San Francisco, have been on the tour many times. I believe in ghosts, I’m sure Alcatraz is plenty haunted. But there is no need to criticize California, or pretend you’ve ever worked for a ‘legit’ ghost hunter team. Is this a forum that should be on http://www.rotten.com?

Alcfan says:

June 9, 2009, 1:20 pm

Actually you can stay the night thru the park service in a cell. Its based off a lottery and must be submitted by Nov. The dungeons (citidel) and other off limit buildings are used for private tour and if you make a donation to the parks a rec you can ask for a tour of them but must be done well in advance. The “rumors” of banging cells are true and the reason Alcatraz is one of the most haunted places to visit in the US. Believe what want but at least experience it before you make your comments.

kate says:

July 13, 2009, 11:49 pm

We went on the evening tour of Alcatraz, and it was an amazing place. We were really mad when the batteries of our camera’s were all dead after 10 minutes on the island…not all that surprising when you think of it, but we didn’t prepare! Bring spares if you go, we had ours fully charged! My husband is a non-believer, but came away with different views…:) It was abnormally cold in a few spots, and the uneasy feelings didn’t leave until we were back on the ferry again. I do believe this is a haunted, and special place. If you are in the area, it is very worth visiting, for the amazing history, and for spirit activity…if that interests you.

kate says:

July 14, 2009, 12:03 am

I didn’t add something to my previous comment that was possibly worth mentioning. I am very sensitive to energy, and throughout our time at Alcatraz, I became incredibly sad. My husband is very easy going for the most part, and got really argumentative while we were there. I am not sure if this is relative, but believe that several things are possible. It is a possibility that we were absorbing some of the negativity that was part of the history there….who knows? :) Have a great time, if you visit, but be ready with spare batteries! :)

Yeah, i went to Alcatraz. it was hella cool. but, there was one spooky part. it was around 6:00 pm. i walked into Robert Stroud’s solitary confinement cell in D – block.(he spent 6 years in solitary confinement.) i took a camera with me to take pictures to maybe catch something interesting. it was so dark. the toilet was the only thing in there and it was just a hole in tha ground. i took about 12 different pics. when i walked out of the cell, i looked back to take another look before i moved on. the most f*cking scary thing happenwd. i saw an apparition of robert stroud appear for about one second, then just vanished. i blinked to make sure i wasn’t seeing things. i saw it again. he spoke to me this time. he said “get outta my cell!” i was freaked out. just to let you know… im making this up. hahahahahaha! i fooled you, biotch!
