I Googled haunted Allerton Mansion because I stayed there last night for my cousin Mary's wedding (you can find her comment above, small internet I guess). It's not in Chicago like it says! It's really about 3 hours south of Chicago in central Illinois.

Right when I walked into the place I said it seemed like one of those places you'd see on Most Haunted on TV, never hearing about anything in the first place. It just felt very old and slightly creepy. As time went on, and people's alcohol intake proceeded, stories came out about the woman in white. One of the men there said that he had actually laid in the future Mrs. Allerton's room (Room 6) and had someone take pictures. I'm not huge on believing in orbs, but there was one right above the man's head in a picture that was not in another photo taken right after that.

The story I heard about the woman in white is that it was to be the future Mrs. Allerton but Mr. Allerton was actually gay. So in turn, his fiancee waited around for him to "decide" on whether or not he was into men or women. It's said she still haunts because she is still waiting for Mr. Allerton. One worker was telling us that it's true that many people don't stay the night when they're in Room 6 because of a woman who looks to be in her 30's wearing all white comes and sits on their bed.

Despite all the haunting stories, it is a beautiful place to have a ceremony. The wedding and the reception can be held in the same place so there is no confusion of where to go after the wedding. Mary's wedding went very well and good luck to my cousin and her new husband!

I hope the marriage went alright. That's creepy as hell getting married in a supposed haunted area. Not good for the marriage at the least.

The Allerton Mansion is in Monticello, Illinois, a small town between Decatur and Champaign off of I-72. It is a mansion that was previously owed by Robert Allerton in 1900, and then donated to the University of Illinois. I am actually getting married there next November so I am very intrigued by any information anyone has on this.
