Larra’s comment is my favorite so far: not merely incorrect, but flat-out, in-your-face made up, if not by her, then by her fellow campers. Next time, Larra, do a teensy bit of research before you post. Allerton may not have been “out” as a g*y man, but everybody within six counties knew what went on at the Farms, and it didn’t include a teenage daughter, a drowning or a pool in what’s now the Sunken Garden. This silly campfire-quality tale goes in the same Fail category as the story of the escaped lioness that attacked Allerton’s butler one day when he was out picking flowers. No wonder people don’t take these sites seriously.

I live in monticello, and I have heard that it was suppsed to be named after tomes jeffersons homestead and it was spelled wrong ( witch its not ) so they kept it monticello

Robert Allerton’s daughter drowned as a teenager in the sunken gardens (which used to be a pool). I have attended summer camps there on multiple occasions and have heard rumors of Miss Allerton haunting her father’s former home and grounds.

I was actually informed of this supposed haunting recently. I am a local resident and not only have I visited the house numerous times, I have stayed in the mansion itself. The room? Room 6. I can safely say that I have had no paranormal encounters during those visits. Is that to say that Allerton House is not haunted? I can’t say. But without some sort of proof, I think I’ll remain skeptical.
