Hi, I live in Bedford Virginia. The entire town is creepy. I lived just a few blocks down from the Avenel in a house that we have reason to believe haunted by a boy named Jack.(but that is a long story) The Avenel house was actually the head of a huge plantation in civil war times. It is said to be haunted by many spirits. Slaves, sisters who died there, the master of the plantation, the lady in white.General Lee stayed there during the civil war.All of Bedford is full of haunted history. Bedford also was home of the”BEDFORD BOYS”. Who were all local residence and were all sent to battel in World War 2. Almost all of them never made it home. If ever you are looking for a nice historical town, Bedford is the place.

I have lived next to the Avenel plantation house for eleven years… and never have seen anything out of the ordinary.

Isn’t there a story behind it?Why does she wander like that? And what’s with the long, white dress? In every story, when a woman is involved, she is always wearing the exact same thing.

I’ve lived two blocks away from the Avenel House for a little over a decade now, and I’m still a little sketchy on the whole “ghost story” ordeal. I mean, I’ll admit I’ve seen strange things out of the corner of my eye walking home and taking the shortcut down Avenel (I live on Lee Street), but never actually a full-on apparition. I’ve been inside on several occassions, and the only time anything out of the ordinary happened was Halloween , 2002 (I believe). In the upstairs master bedroom, there was a rocking chair that would rock by itself from time to time, despite the fact that noone was allowed in that part of the room, and, seeing as how I helped set up the festivities that night, I’m quite certain that it wasn’t a set-up trick. There are also reports of seeing an outline of someone lying in the bed in that room the same night, and, again, noone was allowed to be in that part of the room (it was roped off).

While I’m not sure what to make of the whole ordeal, I think it’s safe to say that there is somewhat of an odd, almost unnerving air about the whole place.

Wow, after all of this talk, I almost want to walk down there right now. Hah.

I’ve never been to the Avanel House but from what i’ve read it’s pretty creapy if you ask me.
Like somebody already said howcome in every ghost story I hear or read about if theirs a lady in it she’s always wearing a white dress and sitting in a rockingchair and always endsup walking around in the house or building.
I think if you don’t tell anybody that it’s haunted they won’t know the diffrence because it’s all in their heads and their imigination is just trying to scare them and they always want to go with what their minds tell them to do but they can’t decide if it’s true or not because their imigination is going wild and it’s confusing them. I lived in Bedford for over 10 years and i’ve never heard of this place and have never ever seen this place and i already think it’s just a bunch of **** in a chef salad!!!!even though i like reading about haunted houses this one doesn’t even sound real because i’ve read about 4000 diffrent articles and they all have the same settings and plots and themes and everything the same as about 3998 articles i’ve read about and nothing makes sence and i’ve srarted to stop believing in haunted stories and diffrent haunted houses i’ve seen because they all seem the same to me and i just don’t think their real anymore.

I live two doors up from the Avenel House. I have heard the stories but have not seen anything strange yet. I do know my bassethounds bark at something at 2:00 AM each morning like clock-work. I have always assumed they were barking at a deer; I have never heard of deer that kept such a consistant schedule. If I see anything, I will post it on this site.

I have lived in Bedford my whole life and I have heard the stories about the house being haunted. I couldn’t tell you if it really is or not though. I have always wondered. I have yet to see the inside, but I am curious to what I would find. I live not to far from the Avenel house and pass it sometimes, but I have never seen anything out of the ordinary, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. I like to believe that there is something there just because it makes life more interesting.

is it true that the avenel house is haunted? I say it is if anyboby has went on the ghost walk at the avenel house then they belive it or do they? I think it is because if the house was a civil war house then it is if I see anything I will let everyone know

My dad took my family down to the Avenel house tonight. We went for a certain reason, he told us this story:

His friends went down to the Avenel house on a tuesday in december in 1987. The power meter was off and they went in through the window. They walked in a room, and the lights came on. Every room they walked in, the lights came on. All the plastic was on the furniture. They went in the bathroom, and not only did the lights turn on, but the water started running.. in the bath and the sink. The bathtub was a claw footed tub. When they came back out of the bathroom, all the plastic was off the furniture, and no where to be found. They then went into the kitchen, and there was an apron swinging on the back of the door, with a newspaper from about 20 years ago. They started freaking out, so they went to the back door, and the handle came off in my dad’s friend’s hand. He swears he heard someone or something say GET OUT.
They had left the window open when they came in, but when they went back over to the window, it was closed. They got out fine, but when they drove back around his friend noticed the light in the attic was on, and there was a rocking chair sitting in the window, rocking, but there was no one in the chair, and no one in the house.
Well when we went back tonight there was a single light in the whole house that was lit in the window. We thought no big deal, this whole thing is just a joke. So, we drove around the back of the house, and there were no lights on in the back. We drove around the front again, same deal. We circled back around, and there were lights lit in the back of the house. They kept getting brighter and brighter, until finally, the whole thing just went out. All the lights were gone.
We drove around the front of the house for the third time, and that one light that has been on the entire time, was out. We were freaked out. Every light was out.

We were done for the night.
But as we were driving home, we started thinking about the address, 413 Avenel Avenue.
The 1 on the sign is also painted white on the sign outside the house. Like, there was an attepmt to white it out. My friend decides to say, “wouldn’t it be weird if friday the 13th was in april this year ? considering that april is the fourth month in a year. so we pulled up the calendar on her phone, and it is. Then we decided to add up 4 and 3.. since the 1 was painted and it’s 7. yeah, April 13th, 2007, aka friday the 13th.

My dad said it was weird that we went tonight, because it was around this time 19 years ago that his friends went. He remembered it was on a tuesday, because it was after an auction. We searched december 22, 1987.. and it’s a tuesday.

Everything that happened was not a coincidence in my opinion. You all can believe what you want, but we will be going back on Friday the 13th.

We are planning on investigating the experience we encountered tonight.

I have family right behind the Avenel House. One night I went over there with a friend and jokingly knocked on the wood on the back of the house. Now it could have been anything, an acorn falling, a branch scraping, who knows… but something knocked back … I didn’t stick around to investigate ..

I have walked the block on which the house sits many times during the summer – late times – and I have never seen anything unusual nor had any omnious feeling. It’s just a beautiful old house with a lot of history – people will believe what they want to believe.

I believe that the White Lady of Avenel is Fannie, a daughter of the Burwell’s who lived there during the War. Fannie married a young lawyer who immediately left after the wedding to serve in the Civil War. After visiting him at his encampment in Gordonsville, she came down with thypoid fever and soon passed away. She never got to enjoy life with her young groom and never had any children. Jimmie, her husband, was killed in a battle just before General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. I have often visited the grounds of Avenel before it was restored. On one visit, just one tree in the yard began violently shaking. Later, when visiting the family plot in a nearby cemetery, once again a single tree began violently shaking.
Avenel is a beautiful home and a showplace for the town of Bedford (called Liberty during the Civil War). I am very pleased that it has been preserved and is now a centerpiece of Bedford.

Fannie’s sister Leticia wrote at least two diaries or books regarding life at Avenel. They are available at the foundation who is now charged with maintaining the property and the Bedford Library has a wealth of clippings etc…regarding the property.

I believe it’s real. from all the stories I’ve heard/read, the previous story about the boys who went in the house through the window was pretty creepy. I am going back on april 13th this year, also. you never know what you may see.

I don’t believe in ghosts at all. There is no Biblical evidence to back up the existence of ghosts, but there is Biblical evidence to back up the existence of demons. Before his death, Harry Houdini told his wife that if there was any way to communicate from beyond the grave, he would do it. the two had a password known only to them, and no one was ever able to confirm communication from him. I have never seen a ghost, I think people’s imagination sometimes gets the better of them.

this is to hannah.
if she ever comes back to this site.

you’ll see us there.
if you go around nine i think.
there will probably be a big group.
because me and molli told a lot of people what happened that night.
and we got a lot of interest.
me and molli are definitely going back though. no matter what. i hope to see you there.
maybe something will happen just so we know we aren’t imagining things ?

that would be great.
anyone else, feel free to join me, molli, and hannah. :D
