I am a 12 year old girl and my grandma and mom have told me stories of avanel….just to see if there really was a white lady i asked one day if we could drive by.being as we were in town alredy. we drove by and stopped right in front of the old house. i dont know what it was. Maybe a light or a reflection but i know that i saw a woman in the upstairs window looking down on our car. Then it turned into a white orb and was gone. when i told my grandma and mom of this they told me that they to had seen the white woman before but they had not seen my encounter that day. To this day every time we are in bedford i ask if we can drive by that old house. I think that the white lady is there and she is watching those who drive by or those who come in her house and she wants help or she wants out. When we drove by that day i got this feeling like a sad or lonley feeling.

I have read the stories of people who say that seeing ghosts is your imagination or that ghosts arnt real but i ask you this if one day a long time from now you see a ghost. Will you still say they arnt real? people should open thier minds to these things belive that even though they havnt seen anything its still thier. Because even the quietest houses hold some kind of mystery and even though you havnt seen anything there are still things lurking in the dark!

All of you need to grow up. If you are old enough to post online, then you are too old to believe in ghosts. Im tired of backwoods paranormal junkies making a mockery of historical places. I have been to Avenel and have news for you….NOT HAUNTED!!

Me and my sister went there the other day and it was at night and we were just about to leave when we saw a women in a white dress standing on the bottom window. So we started walking around the house and there was a light on n one of the rooms and we looked in there and it turned off!!!

to ina, the women in white dresses are always referred to as women in white. mainly, they are ghosts of women who find out their husband is cheating and so as a result, kill their kids. then afer realizing what they ad done, kill themselves in some sort of way

I have greatly enjoyed some of the “accounts” that have been shared about the Avenel House! As a former caretaker of the house, I have been there both accompanied and alone many times. It is my belief that a lovely young woman does frequent the house and grounds, however, I have never had the opportunity to meet her myself. Please be aware that many of the stories shared in past comments, although creative, do not match historical information or the actual layout of the house. If you are lucky enough to visit Avenel, be sure to appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship of the home and take the time to speak with someone who can share the accurate history of the home. The truth is much more interesting than fabricated stories!

I go to Bedford Middle School and pass Avenel every day on my bus. My friend told me about how Avenel was haunted by a lady in white. She told me the legend that she had heard about it, saying that the Lady’s husband left to fight in the civil war, and how he never returned. She said that the Lady died from some sort of sickness while waiting for him to return, and she still does wait.
I kind of believe in ghosts, but so far the only thing I have seen at Avenel is something white in the top window. I don’t know if it was a trick of the light, or if something really is there. I’d love to find out.

We were surprised to read that Bedford is one of the most haunted places in the UK, at least regarding its pubs. We have more detail here: http://www.ghostpubs.com/haunted_pub/east/bedfordshire/bedford/detail.html

Back in Sept. or Oct. of last year (2013) i was looking at Avenel as a wedding venue. My fiance was unable to go to the appointment to look at the house sooo i took lots of pictures. Up stairs in the room that the groom and groomsmen use to get dressed was the room that Robert E. Lee stayed in when he visited Avenel. As you go in the room and look to the left theres a dresser/washstand with a mirror if u look to the right the bed night stand i think a chair and like a small closet door are on that wall. NO windows. I took pics of it all. My sister pointed out in the pic of the mirror on the dresser that there was a civil war officer standing BEHIND me in the picture towards my left. we compared it to a pic that i took of the fireplace that has a pic/painting of general lee above it. the image that was in the mirror was the same man in the painting/pic above the fireplace except the image in the mirror looked very angry. we could clearly see his white beard and gray uniform and even the whites of his eyes! They were very chilling. we ended up having our wedding elsewhere for other reasons BUT i still get chills remebering that picture that i have unfortunately deleted the pictures because it freaked me the hell out. But in hind sight it was still a very intersting experience. i emailed it to the events coordinator. I dont know if ahe kept it or not. I dont look for ghosts but have heard of the ghosts of avenel since i moved to bedford 21 years ago and apparently took a picture of one in a mirror. I will say avenel is GORGEOUS inside. a friend of mine was married there may 2013 & it was beautiful.

My brother and I went to a Civil War re-enactment in Bedford in 2004 and went to the afternoon activities at Avenel. As I ascended the stairs to the bedrooms I was tripped (by the ghost) and ended up with a miserable sprained ankle. There was nothing on the stairs to trip me. I was going very slow and taking in the beauty of the house when it felt like someone tripped me. I later read reports of the ghost doing these type things for fun or revenge. It was difficult to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. I think the ghost had more fun than I did!
