I lived in Bedford Va. for 3 years. I lived on Smith Mountain Lake. I used to see random people walking on my house, but they never bothered me so I didnt tell anyone. Well, we went to the Avenel House for an Anniversary of a family friend. I saw the lady in the white dress and the man. I also saw what looked to be a slave walking with them.

Just wondering about what happened when you guys went back on 4-13-07? I have lived in Thaxton since I was six and I have never been but heard the stories. I believe it though!!

Hi im matt giles and im gonna share my storie of the haunted avenel house! It was late that night me, morgan, brian, and ray went. We started snooping around in the basement of the house. All we seen was old wheel barrels and cob webs around old candels. Soon we went through one of the windows of the house. We dident see anything but we did hear strage nosies coming from upstairs! We dipped out and never came back! Hopefully me and the crew can get up and go back to see if their really is a lady in white that walks around!

Isn’t there a story behind it?Why does she wander like that?And what’s with the long,white dress?In every story,when a woman is involved,she is always wearing the exact same thing.

My answer to this question is logic. Tipical “ghost are always in a white dress simply due to the fact that in the day women were burried in their wedding dresses or their Sunday best. Even today when people die they are layed to rest in “usually” very nice clothes.
A persons imprint or energy could be left on items like the rocking chair, women would rock their children to sleep or rock in a chair to give a since of comfort to themselves. So a persons energy can leave an imprint on a object. I use those two examples because they were questioned on this site. I have never seen a ghost that I know of; I have possibly felt something alittle strange I don’t know. I would like to experiance such a thing and maybe someday I will see something I have no way of explaining away. I live close to the Bedford but I haven’t made it there yet perhaps I will in a few days.

i just moved to bedford back in april of 2007…
i have just recently heard of this avenel house. My uncle and i are starting our own paranormal group… and to train myself i have been walking around the property of this house quite often… when i get up enough courage i want to reach someone about entering this house… the first night i went i didnt see anything physically but i had a strong feeling at the back of the house where the covered porch is, it was creepy…i had my video camera on night vision and took a good look into every window. when me and my friends made it to the side porch we looked in the window and there was a portrait of a woman,fannie im guessin, and as soon as i zoomed in on her portrait the camera died and refused to cut on, it didnt cut on again until we were in the car driving away.. during the day it feels so homely there, at night its a different story… im not sure what to think, but im going to continue my research… if anyone can answer this please do.. ARE WE ALLOWED TO GO INSIDE??

Iv’e always heard the stories as well and for growing up i never believed in ghost or anything like that but me and one of my friends went to the avenel place a month or so ago and was just wanting to see what it looked like up close. I think our hearts stopped for a second when we looked insdie the door window we had a few cold chills like someone or something was watching us. The painting of Robert E lee hainging in front of the front door wall inside we stared his eyes moved insdide that painting and we just stood there for a few minutes then we heard whistling sounds…we looked around nothing or knowone was in site…we ran so fast we just got the heck out of there. Need to say ‘yes’ that place is haunted.

I have lived in the Bedford area for 30 years and this is the first time I have heard anything about this house. It has got me very curious and I would love to go investigate it.Where can I sign up to join in the investigation? As for the comment above that refers to the bible… Do you believe in The Holy Ghost? If that is real, Why can’t another ghost be real? So the Bible does speak of a ghost and it also speaks of demons. I say, if you are going to speak of the Bible, you need to read it from begining to end first! It is in there.

My investigation team explored Avenel this past Friday and it was pretty quiet- we did however have 2 team members here the doorlatch on the Avenel Ave side of the house click and turn as if it was about to open, though upon inspection the door was locked and secured. We had a video camera set up just inside the doorway shooting back down the hallway where it is said a lady paces in wait for something, or someone. There have been reports of hearing her skirt rustling as she paces. In a bedroom upstairs, I heard a similar rustling near the fireplace- have yet to examine our audio or the video for backup. january 23,2009 my friend Destiny and I were at the Avenel when we noticed the curtains shut I started telling her[just playing around]maybe the ghost closed them so we went to go check the lock on the door when we turned around a minute later[We swear they were closed]they were opened.

january 24,2009 Grace and I went to the Avenel again a door was unlocked we didn’t go in but we were about to!

when any of you guys are planning an investigation in Avenel my friend Destiny and I would love to come we are almost 11 and we have always been so entrested in Avenel,just send another comment saying the day and time and we definitly love to be there.
