I lived in Bedford for 16 years. I have photographs from inside Avenel of my wife and I taken within minutes of each other on two separate cameras showing a large orb holding the same position above us. Anyone versed in “spirit photography” will know what I’m talking about. It was in the same place on two different cameras, so “dust on the lens” doesn’t wash. I’ve been in that house many times — my father was the Rector of St. John’s about a block away and the people living there in the ’80s (elderly ladies, one was wheelchair-bound, IIRC) were parishoners of his church. I was in there at night a few times with my dad as he visited them. VERY unsettling.

My foster cousin and I decided to go take some pics at the Avenel house and when we looked at the pics again we saw different faces in each pic.And when we looked at the pics of the front of the house we could almost see the face of the woman.

I live in bedford and the houses may look haunted but until you do e.v.p. or something and get proof, the house can’t be considered haunted. I’ve done e.v.p. in houses there and only one has actually had a feedback. We asked why it was there and it said, “I want what is mine. You won’t see me. This is the last of contacting me or my daughter.” We didn’t know that there was more than one. That is the proof. I live very close to an Avenel and drive by it everyday but it isn’t in Bedford….Its near the old Beverlys Mill in Broad Run,Va. Sometimes on Halloween we drive up there and wait at the “haunted railroad.” But nothing happens. Not saying that I don’t believe…because my aunt use to live on the plantation and says that one day while she was doing her homework she looked out the window and the lady and white was sitting in a tree. My aunt was never scared though…since shes moved, whenever she drives by she feels someone is sitting in the backseat of her car.
The story of Avenel is the Lady in Whites’ Fiance died in the civil war and because she was so upset she went to the stream which is located next to the railroad and piled rocks on her and killed herself.

Hi my name is Jordan Arrington and i have lived in bedford my entire life, I have visited the Avenel on several different occasions and i have never seen a lady in white. It is said that a woman wearing a white dress was pushed down the stairs and died.. and now she is seen walking through the house at night. I have been there during the day several times and have investigated but nothing out of the ordinary has happened. It is said and i know this from friends of mine that they have been there at Night and have had experiences from cabinets in the kitchen coming open to doors slamming. So i go by there one night it was about 1 or 2 in the a.m. and i go in. i was in there for a good minute walking around downstairs but there was nothing happing until i walk into this one room and it felt cold much cooler than any of the other rooms and there was a picture of this woman but she was not in white… and it felt as if she was watching me as i walked around the room.. it was creepy. Ive seen this picture many of other times in the house but i have never got a vibe from it like i did that night but i didnt pay any mind to it, Now this is where it gets creepy.. as i remember i was getting ready to turn around to go check the upstairs and as i turned i heard footsteps going up or coming down the step i really couldnt tell but i know what footsteps sound like and that was the sound of footsteps on wooden steps, but scared and excited at the same time i ran up the steps to see if i could catch a glimpse of someone or something but nothing was there. All the doors upstairs were closed and i didnt hear any doors close when i was going up but i went to go check out the rooms upstairs but all the doors were locked and i couldnt get them open, now i was thinking why would all the upstairs doors be locked and the front door be unlocked? I couldnt get in any of the rooms to investigate so I started back downstairs, when i got there the front door was wide open now I distinctivly remember closing that door when i went in. I walked all around the downstairs agian to see if anybody came in while i was upstairs but nobody was there and i would have seen them if they had came upstairs, all the upstairs doors were shut and i couldnt get in when i left the front door was open its like someone or something was there and wanted me OUT! Thats my experience at the Avenel, I have never seen lights or a lady in white like all these other stories and i have drove by there many of nights looking but there is something there. if your truly looking to experience something at the Avenel go there at night and let me say that was my first time going by myself so go ALONE!

it is haunted

One day last year, my friend and I deceided to stop by there and take a pic. of the address sign.He got out of the car and I stayed in with car running. When he went to take the pic, a huge black shadow appeared shadowing the address sign. But he did get the pic of that shadow and sign.It wasn’t his shadow, it was very creepy.We both saw it. I HAD A DR’S appointment so we went on to that. When we was ready to leave there… our car battery was DEAD!That was a brand new battery!.We know what ever that shadow was that it took energy from our battery. After that experience, we started having very bad experiences at our own home. And they became so bad that we had to move the first of this year. Maybe that evilness came back with us. All i know is what we saw and what happened and it left it’s affect.I say there’s more then just The Lady in White. I can’t believe the doors are left open late at night as it BELONGS TO ..VIRGINIA CIVIL WAR TRAILS and is HISTRORICAL!! My ancester..Gen. Robert E.Lee even stayed there. I do believe something is there or was. I, myself ,as we had been there several times have saw nor felt nothing until that one time of the shadow!My daughter’s husband worked there repairing and she said there was something there as she had helped him. As for me,I’d like to see something besides an black evil shadow type thing.

does anyone know who currently own this place?

I was delivering tables,chairs,and such for a wedding yesterday to this house.I jokingly asked if the people had seen the ghost today?One of the people told me not yet.My co-worker was in the kitchen setting some glasses down when.From out side I heard a big crash I thought to my self oh great he just dropped the glasses.I walked into the dinning room,he was still in the kitchen and a silver plate was rolling around on the floor.there was nobody in the dinning room but me and that was after the plate had fallen.

Okay so the three of us was coming home around 1:30 and we decided to ride down avenel. when jesse saw something flash on the poarch. as we continued to drive we all saw something in the in the middle window. drove around to the side that is facing peaks street and saw a bright blueish light on the bottom floor and the whole room on the top right room and jesse and dan saw something standing in the window then when we came back thru it was gone because u could see out of the room into the hallway. weird but its been around the sametie as all the other spottings so. we should get a ghost flim crew to come up here and work on avenel.

hi we are reschering on the Bedford Middle School of VA Ghost and cant find anything could you all help us find out about this Ghost?!?

I am a 12 year old girl and my grandma and mom have told me stories of avanel….just to see if there really was a white lady i asked one day if we could drive by.being as we were in town alredy. we drove by and stopped right in front of the old house. i dont know what it was. Maybe a light or a reflection but i know that i saw a woman in the upstairs window looking down on our car.Then it turned into a white orb and was gone. when i told my grandma and mom of this they told me that they to had seen the white woman before but they had not seen my encounter that day. To this day every time we are in bedford i ask if we can drive by that old house. I think that the white lady is there and she is watching those who drive by or those who come in her house and she wants help or she wants out.When we drove by that day i got this feeling like a sad or lonley feeling.

I have read the stories of people who say that seeing ghosts is your imagination or that ghosts arnt real but i ask you this if one day a long time from now you see a ghost. Will you still say they arnt real? people should open thier minds to these things belive that even though they havnt seen anything its still thier. Because even the quietest houses hold some kind of mystery and even though you havnt seen anything there are still things lurking in the dark!

All of you need to grow up. If you are old enough to post online, then you are too old to believe in ghosts. Im tired of backwoods paranormal junkies making a mockery of historical places. I have been to Avenel and have news for you….NOT HAUNTED!!

Me and my sister went there the other day and it was at night and we were just about to leave when we saw a women in a white dress standing on the bottom window. So we started walking around the house and there was a light on n one of the rooms and we looked in there and it turned off!!!

I lived a few houses down from that house for 10 years and never saw anything suspicious.

to ina, the women in white dresses are always referred to as women in white. mainly, they are ghosts of women who find out their husband is cheating and so as a result, kill their kids. then afer realizing what they ad done, kill themselves in some sort of way

I have greatly enjoyed some of the “accounts” that have been shared about the Avenel House! As a former caretaker of the house, I have been there both accompanied and alone many times. It is my belief that a lovely young woman does frequent the house and grounds, however, I have never had the opportunity to meet her myself. Please be aware that many of the stories shared in past comments, although creative, do not match historical information or the actual layout of the house. If you are lucky enough to visit Avenel, be sure to appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship of the home and take the time to speak with someone who can share the accurate history of the home. The truth is much more interesting than fabricated stories!
