Real Haunted House

Baker Mansion

Altoona, Pennsylvania

This house, which has been converted into a museum, is said to be haunted. There is a wedding dress that moves, though it was originally in an airtight glass container. There is also a bed that never remains made. In the basement, there are screams which many think belong to one of the Baker’s sons who was killed and stored in the deep freezer until the ground had thawed enough for him to be buried.

This really isn’t a comment but more of a incident that happened to 2 of my friends. They were walking home from a football game in the football field beside the mansion (mind went blank onthe name)… now we are all from Altoona and know the story of Baker Mansion but never really believed it to be true until that night… but as i was saying… the had to walk past baker mansion to get to their house and teh front door was hanging open… now it was around 10-10:30 p.m, so no one should of been there. The one wanted to go inside but the other was a little creeped out. Now my one friend and I are open about Hauntings and Ghosts and whether they exist, the other well she is a bit of a skeptic…since the front door was open the decided to creep around back to see if any one was there and let them know that the door was open.. as they did the y glanced up and noticed a boy standing in the window and waving at them to come in… well of course he was transparent and that freaked the hell out of them… as they stared up at him, he began to disappear… that really scared them and the ran around front again… as they got to the front door it slammed shut and they heard an eerie lagh come from inside.. the next day they called and told me everything. Now at first I wasn’t to sure… but when I found out that it was proven that Baker Mansion is indeed haunted I knew they were not lieing.

I had something like that. It was the summer that I had to go to my first year of junior high. My dad took me to Baker Mansion because it was a reward for working so hard for going to junior high. Everything went fine until we were getting ready to leave. We came out of the basement and I was waiting for my dad to unlock our bikes. As I was waiting he unlocked the bikes and at the sametime a scream from the basement came it was the group that we were with…I think but I don’t know because I went down the driveway not even a second after the scream.

I left a comment before this one. All I can say is that I never had anything weird happen to me but I have felt like their was something watching me. Not to really scare me but more of an “Hey it’s her again and she’s older type of things.” I’ve only been in their twice I think or was it three?

My family took me there one Mother’s Day a few years ago, It was something I had been wanting to do for awhile. Anyway, as we got on to the porch I had got the feeling someone was watching me. When we got inside my knees suddenly felt they were going to buckle. They stayed that way the entire time I was there.I literally had trougle getting up the stairs do to the feeling in my legs. While we were upstairs my family, the guide, and I all heard this strong sound of wind rushing up past us, we didn’t feel it though. It lasted only a few seconds and stopped just as suddenly as it started. As I walked out the exit of the house, my knees returned to normal. But even now when I drive past I get a very weird feeling like someone is looking at me through those big front windows.

As stated my last name is Baker… I don’t know much about my family history or where all of us are from except that we are a large family…
Well I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find the family History of the people whom lived in Baker Mansion…
Post a comment back on here if you do.

Also, does anyone know what the price is for admission to the Mansion? I’d like to go there and experience the hauntings myself…
Thank You,
April Baker

I moved to Altoona 12 years ago. I lived about 4 blocks from the Mansion. The area is very quiet & pretty. It “is” creepy at night. I have taken the tours and I have attend the haunted events that they have annually. ( Ghost Stories at Baker Mansion usually in October every year). I have always believed we are not alone, regardless of what people think or say. I feel there are way too many proven facts and EVP’s, photo’s and personal experiences to
asume we are born, buried, & morned.
To answer some questions:
The address to Baker Mansion is not listed in the phone book but here is the number 814-942-3916.

April, my advice to you is call, take a tour, but have some ancestry history with you to ask the historical society, that is who takes care of the mansion. The cost of the tours should be around $6.00 or so. I have seen a boy in the window many times; he is bold and as the years seem to go on he seems to be seen more often. I have heard screams even during the day light hours. If you believe …….you will feel and see more then you could even imagine. Trust me it is not for children named “Poopy” or Ape Norrnass. Have fun and be open your minded.

In response to all the people that are leaving comments about how stupid this is….why are you here? I’m sure you have a VERY exciting life with lots of important things going on, espicially since your sitting at home right now on the computer.

By the way….there are a few very well know haunted places in PA that are not listed on here. If anyone’s interested try searching for Eastern PA Hauntings, especially New Hope, PA.

This whole city of Altoona Blair county is very haunted from this Bakers Mansion to the Altoona Hospital to the home of 907 4th Ave. Juniata of where I grew up! But if you do not believe maybe you should rethink this thought! Once I called this Bakers Mansion to see about some prices and a Mr. Baker his self came across and told me to come out between the hours of 10 and 10:30pm to see his house personally! My one friend at the time made me call back and this time a woman answered the call I had told her about what had happened she told me personally that this does happen from time to time that it was the ghost of Mr. Baker his self! So with that I never did get to see this Mansion everyone turned afraid and I lost my chance to be there! For some unknown reason it seems as if this house comes alive between 10 and 10:30 pm even thought it is alive with ghost during the day! I wonder just who this boy is they see?
Even the The Rossvelt JR High School has a ghost boy there his story is a sad one if you go to the Altoona Mirror you can read it I recalled it from years back. good luck and believe in the things you see and hear!

I live in a huge house that looks like a mansion. And it’s haunted. The other owners b4 said that someone hung themself in my basement. Me and my friends have done Ouija and have found out some stuff about a little girl named Meghan. I’m only 12 but I still know alot and in my bedroom there is a floorboard that has a box and in it is a doll that looks alot like me. Once I was looking in the mirror and could have sworn I saw a hand move past the back of me. I still get the chills. does any1 have any good advice? should I stop messing around?

I would like to set the record straight. I work at Baker Mansion. There is no historical basis for the haunting of the little boy. Really, Mrs. Baker and her daughter and two sons are the only ones said to haunt the house. Also, most likely, nobody was stored in the basement. The one son did die in a steamboat explosion but most likely was not stored in the basement. Now, I am not saying that it is not haunted. I’ve had a few experiences-hearing footsteps, smelling perfume, etc. I just don’t think it is as haunted as everybody thinks it is. I do think something is there, though.

This is a load of baloney. I live in the Altoona area and have been to the Baker Mansion MANY times growing up. The only “story” I ever heard about the Mansion was the “dancing wedding dress”. I recently took my niece and nephew to see the Mansion and, suddenly, there are all these stories of it being haunted. It took mere moments to debunk nearly every single story they told. The account of things falling over in one room was simply loose floor boards. If you stand one end of one of the floor planks, it makes things at the other end of the room wiggle.

I was VERY disappointed. The guides knew little to nothing of the history of the Mansion. *I* knew more about the Mansion and the Bakers than they did!!!

The tour guides need to spend less time on the *REAL* history of the Bakers and the Mansion than they do on the fabricated stories of the “ghosts” who have “appeared” in the last 15 years.

Brad Ballock says:

February 23, 2007, 10:34 am

This statement is true. If you are there at night, or just standing outside, looking in the window, you may see the dress moving. I was walking wit some friend, and we stopped to look in the window, and we all saw the dress moving passed the window. It was on of the scariest things i have ever seen.

Hi have lived in altoona for all my life, until I moved to somerset not to long ago. I’ve known Baker Mansion, for years, I also know their are people their who havn’t moved on. People should let the experts figure things out, When you asume to know what your talking about especially the history of Altona, It makes you sound like a fool. I’ve lived on westchestnut ave. to the zoo, from one end to the other. I’ve seen many things, from apperations to my sister having a friendship with them. If you were smart you would go to your local library and dicover the amazing history in Altoona. If you were to look into your own haunting and find you are not alone, I would and have looked into their pasts. Keep tring to speak with them. Close minded people should look else were if they do not believe. I have now got a new and amazing history I am always looking in. Try Somerset county. Beautiful.

Ok, let’s really set the record straight. The Baker’s that built the Baker Mansion died out with that family, any ancestors left have the surname of Woods. No one in the mansion ever died of unnatural causes, and there were never any young boys living in the mansion. When the home was finally completed, the Baker’s daughter was 12, and her two brothers were in their late teens. As the writer of the murder mysteries for the mansion, and the vice president of the Historical Society, I have been from the top of the mansion to the very bottom, typically turning off lights as I went, and I have never experienced anything odd. I’m not saying that the possibility of ghost doesn’t exist…just don’t get your hopes up too much! And by the way, the dress is located in what used to be Anna’s bedroom on the second floor, and there is no way it’s visible from the window. For more info, go to

Ok, while we are setting records straight, let’s include this little bit of information: I have been in the mansion a few times for different events, during on afternoon visit to the mansion while in the basement I asked the tour guide about a set of steps leading to an opening in the wall.. he explained that way back when that was where they kept ice. I asked if I could walk up the steps and take a look, he agreed. Upon walking up the steps, I was unable to move past the third step from the top as I was overwhelmed with a feeling that I should not go any further. I immediately came back down the steps and my husband, laughing at me, said he would take a look… and he did, all the way to the top and upon looking in the opening , he saw nothing BUT…. once he came down and joined me and the tour guide , the tour guide told us that way back when ,l one of the Bakers had indeed died at the property and his body was kept in the ice bin until it could be taken care of and burried. No more than a minute later all three of us heard a knocking sound comming from what sounded like, in side the hole in the wall. We all looked at each other and the tour guide himself looked amazed.
If that was not enought to make you think twice about the mansion… when my husband and I left… we got into out car and after he started the car…there began this buzzing noise that neither of us could explain. He got out of the car, still parked in the mansions driveway… and began to search the car for this buzzing noise… to our surprise, a portable back rest ( one that my husband takes with us for times when his back acts up and he needs the extra support while driving, which also has the option to flip a switch to allow a vibrating heat option)… the back rest was in the back of the car, and had not been used that day… was switched to the on position. We both just wonder to this day how that could have happend, since , agin he had not used it and our car was locked while we were in the mansion and it was not on when we got in the car but instead started buzzing after we started the car and were getting ready to drive away.
I believe that if YOU dont believe, you will not experiense anything, but if you are someone who is opened to believing, they will show themselves in one way or another.
Visit the mansion and decide for yourself.

When we were there, i will admitt it was a bit tense and creepy, but really the only thing that freaked me out was how jumpy the tour guides were. But the whole time, i did not expierience one thing, to tell you the truth i do not think that bakers mansion is haunted. for the total of 2 times i have been there,i have expierienced nothing at all.

My husband and I were going there with some friends. My girlfriend was telling us about the time when she and her husband had walk around the mansion at night. She said that it was creepy because it was dark and the wedding dress that sits in the window looked like it was swaying. She said that her husband thought she was crazy. I was freaked out and told her that the wedding dress could not be seen from the window. We asked the tour guide if it was possible. The tour guide said that it has not been able to be seen by the window and is in an air tight case in the hall way. Creepy. However, we did not experience anything on our tour.

Hmmm. Interesting accounts along with a good dose of skepticism as well. Whom to believe? I think I will err on the side of caution and explore the mansion for my own selfish reasons :) I’ve been staying in Altoona just about four weeks now while my fiance’ is working at the Penn State Altoona campus. I’ve explored nearly every neighborhood, shopping center, etc. but have yet to visit any historical sites. I drove past Baker Mansion this morning around 6:15am after dropping Russell off at work. I have to admit I am absolutely smitten with the architecture, grandiosity and beauty of the building(s) and property. I plan to take a tour this afternoon if all goes as planned. I am excited for more reasons than the possibility of encountering paranormal phenomenom- I truly appreciate PA’s history and participating in a tour to learn more about the past is very appealing to me. Also, as an aside, I am surprised that there are only two posts for 2010 and prior to these, the last posting was from October 2009.Just wondering….and noticing… there pattern to ‘activity peaks’? The second story is too long and involved to be told here, but even my grown children will tell you I will not go near the place ever again! I Won’t go closer than union ave on one side or logan Blvd on the other. Laugh at me as you will, but my story is the stuff they make horror flicks from.
