Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Family Barn Murders

Mishawaka, Indiana

Over 200 hundred years ago, a family of seven lived in this barn. One brutal night, six of the family members were shot with muskets, while the seventh died, hiding in a closet. The family now haunts the house in the exact locations of the murders–the closet, the windowsill, and the doorway. In these places one may hear the screams and cries of young children. On the staircase, the third step has been broken for more than two hundred years; every attempt to fix it has failed.

My family and I lived in this house for 5 years.
From 1993 to 1998. The house is shaped like a barn inside, primarly the up stairs where my two daughters bedrooms were. We experenced stuff from the time we moved in to the day we left.Kitchen doors opening by themselves, the sound of dogs barking from the upstairs closet door, the footsteps we heard every night comming from the upstairs, too many things to list. The house is off Milburn blvd on Summerset.

Christopher Jarvis says:

i am interested in knowing where this house is, if it really is off milburn on somerset then it is near my home, but then my parents have lived here all their lives, both dead now, but they never said anything about a house like this.

E Brownbridge says:

November 12, 2007, 3:54 pm

I asure you that the house on somerset off milburn is the the house your are thinking of The house sits in back of the front house on the same property.
If you would like more information please feel free to e-mail me any time. I would love to talk to someone who still lives in that area.

Sue says:

December 9, 2007, 7:33 pm

The first settlers came to this area in 1820, so there are deffinitely NO homes over the age of 200 years around here. So most definitely, that part of the story above is false. It might not all be untrue. Stories change, get blown out of porportion and turn into campfire stories to scare little children with.

I mean no disrespect to the people above who claim to have lived in the house. My saying the story doesn’t hold water does not mean the place can’t be haunted. It’s just not haunted by a fictional masacre that happened decades before the area was inhabited with pioneers, unless the dates are way off. I’d be very interested in hearing more about the home, when was it built? Did you ever discover any information which would indicate who was haunting your home and why?

Tabitha says:

December 19, 2007, 3:03 pm

I know the family who used to live there and is posting about this house. I was actually at the house the night that a psychic came over. It’s a true story and I’m glad they got out of that house!!! It scared the heck out of me staying there all the time!

I used to live in a hunted house when I was in the 3rd grade. An old lady haunted the house, it was a harmful situation. I had cuts and scratches everytime I walked through the door. And there were dark figures walking right by me in my bedroom at night. At first I thought that it was my brothers, but they were all asleep. So I went to see if my parents were up, but they were asleep too. I wanted to tell somebody but I was a freak enough.

Shot with Muskets huh… lets see 6 people 1 shot per musket and a speedy reloader thats about 5 MINUTES. Those guns sound like a damn cannon going off so Im SURE those other 5 people who watched it all go down just stood there while the crazy farmer did his devilish business. What kills me most is people accually buy this ****. Go to Tippicanoe state park. Go on the east side of the river and about 1 mile south along the river of the boarder to the State park. Make a camp site there and stay the whole night. That is a real haunted location in Indiana. By the way for those who dont know its on St Rt 35 about 10 minutes south of Winamac

I am a owner/operator of a group of ghost hunters in indiana….. first… we have been to many small family graveyards that date back to the mid 1700s….. so there was some kind of population here that long ago, so obviously you are just going by what a text book says about no settlement till the 1800s….. and second we have been here and it is in fact a very haunted place…. we have gotten alot of evps, many phenomenas on tape and in pictures, and alot of our own personal experiences, so if you dont believe it then go check it out for yourself

I 100% agree with you all the people who try and take away the fun out of the story. Just calm down people this is a story could be true or could be something someone made up but you are kind of taking things too seriously. So what if the barn is haunted and so what if it is only one way to find out. GO THERE! Then you can come back and tell us what happened dont ruin the story.

what is the address of this barn? another thing Ive been hunting with shot guns and muzzle loaders for 8 years now. it only takes me about 1 minute and 30 seconds to load and fire a muzzle loader. I am also 19 now, also 200 years ago I believe there was a population there I live 45 minutes away. I live in la porte , and 100 years ago the was a mass murderer in la porte named belle gunness. the mass murderer land is about a 10 minute walk from my house.

I cannot stand people who have closed minds. I’ve lived in Mishawaka all my life, and have never heard of this story until today. Hubby and I are going to try to check it out tonight after dinner. I hope that we are able to actually explore this house.
We aren’t even 5 minutes from this place. I will post if anything happens.

Tammy says:

September 1, 2010, 10:57 pm

So……….We went over there around 6:30. We didn’t go in as we didn’t want to be arrested for trespassing. I took 10 pictures of the outside of the house, including all the windows. As I was taking a picture of one of the upper windows, it sounded like someone took their hand and was dragging it down the inside of the window.
The house truly is fantastic. You just get this vibe that I can’t quite explain from it. The house was almost calling to me. And I didn’t want to leave. When we got home, we expanded the pictures that were taken. We have a few things on these pictures. One looks like a little girl. You can see her hair, and her eyes. The eyes look red. She is standing in one of the lower windows. In another window, it looks as though there is an older man standing there. I’d be more than happy to send the pictures to anyone interested. I’d also like to get a group together, and go into the house.

Also, does anyone know why the house in front of the barn house is vacant? The address is 711 Summerset. The barn house sits right behind 711 Summerset. We went up to the house that sits in front, and it says the house has been abandoned. I truly feel in my gut that this house is haunted.
I’d also like to know if anyone knows how the upper window towards the garage got broken? And when the last known occupants lived there.
Please e-mail me.

i live with britt andersen, we went to visit her family this weekend and we drove by the house, im pretty sure no one is there, living anyway. the upper windows are very weird, i got a creepy feeling just sitting in the car and looking at the house. the blinds move like someone is looking out at u, and either of the upper windows have creepy figures, and the old lady is the one i saw in the front upper window, the back upper window bothered me more, gave me a gagging feeling when i looked up and saw a dark figure walk by, no living person is there, that house is the most creepy haunted house i have ever been to.

I went to see the “Barn House” and I am sorry to say NO WAY is this house 200yrs old. I also saw nothing in the way of haunting. I do want to check it out again with a few more people and see what we find. I am in no way saying that this place is not haunted. I will be going back there, I hope to find the owner so I can Legally get on the property. The front house is being worked on so I think a new tenant will be living in it soon.

Liz says:

October 18, 2010, 6:06 pm

My family and I are the ones who lived in this house. Never did we say that the house was 200 years old.The experiences we had there will be with us forever. However someone else percives the house is their opinion,we can only say what we went through. If anyone wants to know more you can email me at

Tima says:

October 19, 2010, 11:02 am

Kelly…….I actually have valid proof that this house is in fact haunted! The homes were built in 1925. I also have talked with Liz, and her daughter Brittany about their experiences in the house. I 100% believe them, as like I’ve said before, I have proof!
I have video, and numerous pictures. This house is infested with spirits. There is a portal in the upstairs bedroom that faces the front house.
FYI for anyone wanting to go seek out the spirits. I suggest you stay away from the house, as it has been piurchased. And going to new occupants of the property, and asking to have permission to see the spirits is just ridiculous! I won’t be shocked if the new owners have you dragged away by the police!
My e-mail is if anyone is interested in the pictures and video. Closed minded people need not e-mail me.

kelly says:

Tima says:

October 22, 2010, 9:40 pm

Sent you an e-mail, Kelly.

Tima says:

October 22, 2010, 9:52 pm

Cory…….It is strange that you mentioned you became ill upon looking up at the bedroom window. This is where 90% of the activity is happening. That bedroom is definitley a portal.
We went back there a month ago, and I stood there staring up at the window for a good 3 minutes. I, too could see something pacing back and forth.
I almost feel sorry for the new owners. I truly hope that they knew the house is haunted before they purchased. I highly doubt it though.
Someday, someone is going to make the mistake of tearing that back house down, thinking that will take care of the spirits. That will just enrage the spirits, and they will take residence in the front house.
The front house is haunted as well, anyways. But the back house has much more activity. Even if both homes were torn down, the spirits would remain. They are attached to the land just as much as the homes.

I call bullcrap on this. None of the houses on Somerset have a gambrel roof (barn like roof).

Tima says:

January 12, 2012, 8:09 am

Will, the house is there. It sits in back of another house. We investigated there for 6 months in 2010. As far as I know there are people living in both homes. When we investigated, the homes had set empty for quite a time, not being able to keep occupants. If you thrill seekers have no experience in hunting ghosts then I advice you to stay away from this lot. We were followed home! And if we weren’t experienced then this could have gotten bad! I have pictures of a black man, a middle aged white man, an old white man (we found a picture of him when he was alive. He owned the lot before passing) numerous pictures of a little girl, a dog that looks satantic, an an older woman! We have video (the man who followed us home) of the middle aged man watching us filiming him, raising a blond haired baby doll up and down. There is an upstairs bedroom in the back house that has a secret room inside the closet. This room is a portal and it isn’t bringing through much of anything good! Be warned! It’s no joke! If you are so curious about the lot then take someone with you who knows a thing or two. My friend is an experienced investigator and her and her girlfriend were both scratched pretty bad and told to get out! And most importantly if you go, go with respect for the dead!

Tima says:

March 14, 2012, 9:01 am

If you e-mail me wanting to see pictures and video from this house, then please have a little respect. AND BE PATIENT! I do not appreciate getting rude messages because I cannot send these things right away! I have a life outside of ghost hunting! From here on out rude people will be automatically blocked!

We were out driving around last night, headed up to GW Park & got some weird EVP’s & a lot of orbs. Just for fun we started driving around town & taking pics of some old homes as well as buildings. Got quite a bit of strange things at the 100 Center. We also went by this home. People are now living there so we didnt take any pics. I live only a few blocks away from here. You can stand outside(or sit in ur car) & feel the change in energy in this home. Being a sensitive helps, I think. :-) Tima, If you are interested in seeing what we got last night, feel free to e-mail me at the address I provided. Some were great shots.

Tima, I would like to see your pictures and videos please. I’ve lived in this barn house for many months, and you’re right about the portal. The other night we got a Ouija Board and we opened the portal deeper. I don’t know what we unleashed, but its pure evil and its not happy with us. We’ve heard multiple voices and they have told us that they will never leave us and all those that have been to this house will soon pay. I have marks on my palms and feet that mock the crucifixion of Jesus. This has become anti good and we need your help! Please this not a joke and it cannot wait! We need Sage and Holy Water! I tried blessing the house with Lipton Tea Bags because I thought they contained Sage and Lilac, but I was wrong…DEAD wrong! Tima…. Why is this happening?!

I am a little surprised that people are still talking about this house after so many years. My oldest daughter is 30 and still has nightmares about it. There was no one at the time to help us, no internet and nothing in the phone book believe me I tried. I really don’t know the history of the back house we lived in, all I knew is that we had to get out and we moved in with my mom. The experiences in that house left a lasting impression on all of us. Two years ago I Co Founded Michiana Paranormal Investigations, with our main goal focused on helping families going through the same thing.
We have never asked anyone to believe us nor did we ever say the house was 200 years old. The upstairs had a barn shape to it and along one wall in one of the bedrooms it appeared that an old chicken coop had been boarded up. I will say that every attempt was made to fix the third step, was it paranormal who knows. I pray that anyone living there now has a peaceful, uneventful and happy life.

Yes, this is true. My best friend got a house by here, we saw it for ourselves. The barn is still there. But in front of it is a big house that’s yellow with a blue door. And I think the step is broken because the dad tried to kill his daughter on the third step with an axe. And yes, this is right outside of south bend :[

Candice says:

I wasn’t going to comment because many of the comments were made awhile ago but…the first settlers actually came to Indiana in the late 1600’s? Just because they “founded” a.k.a. named the city, doesn’t mean it didn’t exist before they moved there. There are house around here that are near 200 years old. And it’s not just houses that get haunted…land can be haunted too. I believe them whole-heartedly that the house is haunted. Why would they make it up? I feel bad that they endured that! I hope the spirits trapped in that house can find peace and are able to move on soon.
