Bell Witch Cave

07.23.2005 | 10:15 pm | Adams, Tennessee, United States

Local legends say that the Bell Witch has haunted the area surrounding the caves for hundreds of years. It is said that the witch appears to people in the human form. There are many unexplainable pictures of shadows and other such entities in the cave. Upon entering the cave, it is alleged that one will be overcome by the feeling of being watched. It is further asserted that if one is to take a rock from the cave, they shall be forever be cursed. Many others have also reported voices in restricted areas of the cave that cannot be reached by any human.

  2. I have been to this cave, and the guides told us that story. I went for one
Halloween. The cave was cool;however, I did not believe in the story.
It wasn’t until the guide took our group picture when I became a believer. There were 22 people in our group, but only 21 of those people showed up in the picture.

  6. I have been there twice. The first time it was owned by a family and they would let the last tour go in and explore the cave as they wanted. My friends and I went all over the cave. Nothing happened, or so we thought. Two of us had cameras. We were taking random pics but the general rule we made was that one of us would always be in the shot. There was one pic where only my friend’s arm and hand showed up on a wall, beside her hand was a snake. The snake was not there while taking the pic. The second time we went, the cave had been pretty much closed off to the general public by the new owners. The tour was smaller and you weren’t allowed to go off on your own. One of the ladies in the tour claimed her hair had been pulled twice. I can not say if this was due to a haunting or just someone playing tricks. Afterwards, my daughter and I had our palms read just for fun. Being the sceptic (if i spelled that right) that I am, I suggested we write down what the reader had told us and go one year later to see if any or if happened. 90% came true. Even me getting pregnant, when my tubes are tied. If you go there, it is fun none the least, I can not guarantee you will be scared but you do feel SOMETHING. DO NOT take a rock from there. On my first trip one of the girls took one. Within a week she broke her arm, wrecked her car, and was shot at. She returned the rock and as far as I know, things returned to normal. If you don’t know where it is, just go to Adams Tn (close to Springfield Tn) and ask the locals to give you directions. It seems everyone there knows where it is, you won’t have any trouble finding someone to give you directions.

  9. I was wondering, if the girl Dawn’s story took a rock from the cave, why didn’t she die right out, the way the person from Bob’s story did? Was she lucky, or is the story a fake, as I believe it is? What do you believe?

  10. I once have been to the cave, cemetary, and the bellwitch farm and I must say that is is one of the creepiest feelings I have ever encountered. One of the teachers at my school used to take a cple of ppl to the cave every yr. because he loved it but one time he took my brother and a cple of other boys out there and they went to a certain part in the cave that hardly anyone knows of and they came out with deep scratches and bruises all over their backs. Because of this he has never gone again. Seeing as in how I believe and my friends believe in ghosts and that we live really close to Adams (35 min. drive) we went one time and I must say we had some STRANGE encounters also…

  11. DO NOT TAKE THIS SITE LIGHTLY!
    1) The residents of Adams are nice people and are proud of their history, but they do not take lightly to people making a nusnance of themselves in order to have a cheap paranormal thrill. Remember this is a rural area and the residents are often armed and are crack shots!

    2) Ever see the sign, “Forget the Dog, Beware of Owner!”, well there should be a sign at the edge of town that reads, “Forget the Redidents that you might tick off, BEWARE OF KATE!” Kate KILLED John Bell, beat members of his family, ruined an engagement of one of the Bell daughters, and scared the Hell out of Andrew Jackson. Jackson went to visit Bell and his carrage was stuck in one place. After having her fun with the soon to be President, she told him that he could go on to the Bell Farm. You can look in his published personal letters to find the entery on 11/02/1816 “…I would rather fight 2,000 British Regulars than face that thing again…” This is coming from a man that fought three duels, was involved in a little incident at the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville that left three men dead, a hardened Indian fighter and a Genreral during the War of 1812 (Hint: Battle of New Orleans). He knew how to face his fears and knew when to withdraw!
THIS IS NOT A GHOST BUT AN ENTENTY! IF YOU GO LOOKING FOR THIS THING AND ARE NOT PREPAIRED, YOU WILL PAY A PRICE!

  26. My dad grew up in Greenbrier TN. and had told me stories of the Bell Witch. His story was more based aroung the Admams of Adams TN. He said this Bell Witch was a slave, and the owner of the slave, Mr. Adams would beat her every night. Well, she became very ill, and while she was on her death bed, she put a hex on the Adams family(kinda funny huh?)Anyways, one night the man of the house heard his child screaming, and when he entered the childs room, he saw the witch spanking his kid. Now keep in mind this lady, witch, slave, or what ever you want to call her was dead. The story goes on the eve of the slaves death, the eldest Adams would die. Sometimes of natural causes, but other un-explained. If you look in the Adams TN. phone book, you will not see one Adams listed in there. They all moved away from Adams TN. This is the story I got from my dad years ago. Anyone else from TN. know anything about this Bell Witch story by chance?

  33. Years ago I went with my dad who was a editor of a newspaper for a story to to Bell Witch area. I was a teenanager then. We acamped out in the area. One lady who lived in the area told how she poured O.J. for her grandson and turned around to put it back in the frig. Her grand son was across the room. She heard a drinking sound and the glass being put down. She turned around. It was empty. She lived across from where the original house had been.
We also, ran into into military people in a car . They told us that the previous night an animal had stayed in their head lights. Therefore, they had burned rubber and left. The next day the retuned because one of the wifes’ had read that the Bell Witch took the shape of animals. That is when we happened to run into them. We all started to look around the area and we found John Bell’s grave. It was hidden in the woods then. Later, my dad and I went to some other monument in the area. We told some decendent,an elderly man, what we found. He told us that grave had been lost for a long time.I have a copy of the book written by the decendent. The movie did not follow the book totally. If you can get a copy of the book you should .

Now as of 2 years ago, i found out that she is in my family line and that my great grandmothers grandmother was her cousin and she was EVIL. She haunts the cave, well i shouldn’t say her, because i hope you all know that when you die you don’t comke back. Its just the devil playing tricks on ya. Still, she was very cruel and evil.

ententy in the cave then do this… Don”t go there until the barametric pressure is below 29.5 and the temperature is below 70 F ( typical cavern temp.) 57. I am from TN and I have heard about the Bell Witch since I was a child. I have never been to the plantation or the caves, but my grandmother has. She went there to take some pictures in the early nineties. Most of the pictures she took just showed large black orbs taking up most of the pictures. One of the few that developed nicely were the Bell family grave stones. I have never heard the rumor about being cursed if you remove a rock from the cave, but who am I to say it isn’t true? I thought the caves were long since shut down, but I hope they aren’t anymore. Has anybody tried doing any EVP in there? That would be cool.

Sometimes weird things happen and sometimes they don’t. That’s just the way it goes. If you go and make fun of her then most likely something will happen. 63. Ok so I just moved to TN via Florida. I was just poking around the net and came accross this story and am very interested in this. I got a map and directions to Adams and plan on going out there in May when they are supposed to open the cave up to the public. From all of the comments I have read( the intelligent ones!) it seems to be something worthwhile to check out. I have asked some locals (cookeville) about this and all the stories are the same. the only thing that differs is the relationship of “Kate” to the Bells. some stories say she was a slave, a housemaid, or even just a nieghbor that John Bell had poor dealings with. Can anyone clear that one up? also if anyone has any good photos of thier trip to this cave or of the surronding area that would be great. My other question to those that have ventured out there is are you allowed to camp there? My buddy and I want to go and camp for one night if possible. thanks for all the creepy accounts and hopefully I get some emails regarding this so I can better prepare myself for my little adventure. 65. My family and I have been to the bell witch cave. It was very creepy and some weird things happened. I took digital photos and some had unexplainable orbs in them. Especially near the “indian grave”. I also was climbing up on a rock to get a better look at one of the openings in the rocks and felt as though I was pushed off. Good 3-4 ft. fall. I wasn’t hurt but it did shake me up a bit. Then, on into the cave, one can venture up onto a kind of overhang and there is another opening going back into the cave. Up here, my eldest daughter began to get very nauseated. We got her down and moved away from the area and she began to feel better. She also experienced some cold spots and felt as though someone or something touched her. She is sensitive to these things, no fluke. (She scares me sometimes.) Very interesting visit. Can’t wait to go back! Something’s there!

Well to tell the truth, i have been intrigued by the stories of the bell witch since i first read about the Bell family… Which i am related to John bell by the daughter that got beaten and slapped she married my great (times something) grandpa…well the first time i read the story i believed it, but was creeped out by it and started having dreams about the little girl(i didn’t know at the time i was related, i thought i might have been because of a family name i know quite well) so i went on to learn more and more about it, and have had this eerie feeling ever since n i feel so connected to it i did how ever later find out i am related to her… All my life creepy stuff has happend but latly since i first read it all it’s been getting worse.. I just have to go see it ALL.. i Guess i just have to know.. so if any one has info about going to see it graves, house, fields, and cave please e-mail me @ Peachb16@yahoo.com

  68. I’m terrified of this story. I love information…I like to know that these things exist and to learn about them, but I’d never consider actually going there. It’s way too scary for me. Two things that are also kinda freaking me out right now…one of these two words for me to post this is ‘deathbed’…also, I just glanced over at my boyfriend and he looks like he’s dead. He never sleeps on his back…ever…because he has asthma and it’s hard for him to breathe on his back, but he is. He’s sprawled out like someone just killed him and he fell down. So now I have to go poke him.

  72. I heard a story recently that a man took a rock from the cave. The next day his wife left him(unknown if there were lingering marital issues), his job fired him and his landlord evicted him, all within a week of taking the rock. He immediately returned the rock and no one has heard from him since.

  74. I personally believe in the Bell Witch. A former grade school classmate of mine was somehow related to the Bell family. She made me a believer through her stories. I have read some very interesting stories on here about personal experiences; however, I find it extremely difficult to take most of the sources seriously. Does anyone remember English class? Did anyone learn anything from English class? I will gladly remind all of those people who have forgotten the simple rules of grammar.

  76. Trust me on this one, weather you believe or not don’t risk it. My roommate took a rock from there a couple years back and woke up in the morning to the damn thing staring at her from a full length mirror on one side of her room, she immediately went back under the covers and burried her head until she felt safe enough to look out again. The woman was gone, but comming from that girl who is an extreme skeptic of most things. There may be truth to the whole legend. Not saying one way or another, but it sure as hell seems like it. Why risk it? Btw, yes she does have very bad luck and recently got kicked out of our apartment, even though she threw the rock back into the woods immediately after the sighting two years ago, and never saw the woman again, the curse might still be in effect. Don’t throw away your life for the mere sake of curiousity.

  79. there is actually a movie about the the Bells and the Bell witch. It’s called An American Haunting. The movie has some of the stuff I have heard. Which I’m from that area. But the ending is totally fabricated.
I would tell you about it but I don’t want to ruin it. So if you want more info go rent the movie.

  88. A few years back my mother had to have surgery on her big toe on her right foot. her doctor told her her toe would stay sore for around a year and the infection could get really bad so she took antibiotics but the infection still spread. My dad took her to the Bell Witch Cave on a date. She had to wear open toed shoes because of the swelling. The water of the cave flowed over her feet the time she was there. The next morning she woke up to find that her toes were completely hilled.

  90. That is totally cool and totally scary at the same time! I am just like my dad. When something bad is about to happen, I get this really weird feeling, then something happens within an hour or a couple days. Sometimes I get them really often, Sometimes, I go weeks without that feeling. I don’t want to lose it though, it makes me feel unique. If any1 knows what it is that is happening, write back. I’ll check in l8er.

  95. The Bell Witch is real. I grew up not too far from Adams, Tn and have heard the story of the Bell Witch for as long as I can remember. It was something fun to tell classmates and the younger kids about. I’ve been to the cave and have a photo of a man that was not there. Me and my girlfriend were at the end of the tour so it is imposible that there was a man behind us to accidentaly take a picture of. It is true thought that if you would like to visit the cave all you have to do is ask the locals. I had to stop and ask someone on the side of the road how to get there. Tennessee back roads can be confussing at times, however they tend to lead you in a circle so you end up right back where you started from. It is well worth a visit to the cave. You get to hear the story and you can purchase books. Also if you get a chance check out the movie “An American Haunting” it follows the story very well. I had people (my shiptmates) I watched it with freaked out by how everything I told them about the story is how it happend in the movie. Its a good story and very much true. I will never deny the existence of the Bell Witch and I would not advise it of you.

    Comment by Dave | 05.27.2008 | 3:15 pm

  101. I have been to Adams, TN. I was fortunate enough to speak with someone there who told me the location of where the Bell house actually stood. It is on private property though and of course nothing is left of the house itself. The old well hole is still there though, as well as the family cemetry where Mr Bell (the one killed by the “witch”) his wife and slaves are buried. The cemetery is just inside the tree line at the edge of the property. It is very overgrown and is not the easiest to find. It was really cool being at the actual sight where the house stood and where all of the things happened at.
