Real Haunted House

Bowers Harbor Inn

Bowers Harbor, Michigan

The Bowers Harbor Inn is famous for its haunting. Before becoming a resort the house belonged to an elderly couple for many years. Because the lady became quite infirm the husband had an elevator installed. The lady became rather deranged before finally dying, preceding her husband by only a few months. After that the house lay empty for several years. From the time the Bowers Harbor Inn began operating, the employees have reported seeing the wife in a second floor mirror, light switches that turn off and on by themselves, and the elevator taking unrequested trips up and down. Several times the manager has closed the place down for the evening, turning all of the lights off and locking the freezer door, only to find every light in the building (including those behind locked doors) blazing away, and the freezer door unlocked and standing open. There are also unconfirmed reports by patrons of the fireplaces lighting themselves.

We just went there Saturday August 22nd. We walked into the Restaurant (lower floor) which no body was in there at the moment and started looking around. We were finally greeted by a member of the wait staff who informed us that “yes, there was such a legend” but sadly he pointed out that the mirror from upstairs was brought down stairs AND the special glass was replaced with normal glass. Nothing like taking the haunt out of the place??!?!?!! Not satisfied with this we snuck upstairs after they left and found the bathroom and the Elevator. We tried our best provoke the ghosts, taunting her calling her fat and other such things to see if she would show. I even stepped inside the elevator (not sure how a fatty like Geneive could fit in that small thing) and started taunting her. My sister preteneded to hang herself while in the elevator… We then went into the Womans room and found a giant mirro in the sitting area of it. This was still not the type that made you look thinner, but none-the-less my sister kept posing in it and we were snapping pictures left and right…NOTHING happened. Oh well something are best left to the imagination…right?

We’re authors and paranormal researchers. One of cases we investigated for our recent book, Haunted Travels of Michigan, was Bowers Harbor Inn. We spent months researching the Legend of Genevieve. We also had the opportunity of conducting an overnight investigation with a team that we’ve worked with on a few investigation. Some interesting video and audio were captured.

The elevator in the home wasn’t only used by Jennie. Her husband, Charles, was an invalid (confined to a wheelchair). The elevator was the only way he could get to their bedroom on the top floor.

BTW, Jennie died before Charles, not after … and she didn’t hang herself in the elevator!!!

Inspite of that, there is something unusual/paranormal going on at Bowers Harbor Inn. Don’t know if it’s Jennie, Charles or the original owners of the first farmhosue, but there is something.

I just visited the Bowers Harbor Inn (now the Jolly Pumpkin Brewery) for some beer/dinner this Labor Day weekend (2010) with no prior knowledge of its history.

My boyfriend and I went upstairs to go to the bathroom and as I waited for him, I noticed an unused room by the staircase. I love old buildings and their detail, so I went over to the room to check it out and as I stepped further in, I had a feeling of fear and panic come over me and immediately had to run back out to a group of people waiting by the bathrooms. I was pretty shaken by this feeling wishing my bf would get out sooner. As I stepped closer to the people, I realized they were on some tour of some sort about the history of the house. As I listened, I caught the part of the story that the room I had stepped in was a previous lady owner’s bedroom that haunts the building and this lady occasionally makes her presence felt to other ladies…pretty freaky!

I’ve been into plenty of old homes/buildings and have wandered into rooms even floors by myself and haven’t really ever had a feeling like that. Is the ghost real? All I know is what I felt is real..that feeling of my hairs standing on end and having a sense of panic.

When I visited the Inn with my husband, I went to use the ladies room. I entered the stall and locked the door. A minute later or so, the door the stall flew open! No one was in the bathroom except for me. My heart was pounding, and at the time, I didn’t know about the ghost, but learned about it at dinner. Wild!

My husband and I took our kids to The Jolly Pumpkin. I believe that is the new name. Great restaurant. Our waitress took us on a tour of the former lumber baron’s home. Go to their website. The story is there. She became very I’ll and obese. Hence, the elevator. The baron was fooling around with the nurse. The wife found out and hung herself in the elevator. We are Michigan natives and love this place. In northwest Michigan. Beautiful area and full of great history and stories.
