Bragg Rd.

This hotel at the end of this street was once run by a well known innkeeper. The man, however, was decapitated by an oncoming train during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Now a strange light is seen near the hotel; it is allegedly the innkeeper searching for his head.

  1. I have been down bragg road many, many times before. And had never seen anything, until 10/25/05 - I had 6 people with me and I had mentioned going to saratoga because we live in beaumont which is only about 30 miles from it. So we head over to bragg road and go all the way down to the cemetary. We get out and mess around for a while, take a few pictures and freak ourselves out. So we all get back in my car and start going back down the road. I wasnt driving at the time my friend Matt was and he is from that area. I was messing around in the back set with my girlfriend and told Matt to turn the lights off, so he did, I look back to see a light coming from the right side of the road, and all of the sudden this ball of redish orange light basiclly floats across the road it paused for a second and started to go upward into the trees, I watched as it went behind the trees and followed in the woods for about 5 seconds until it was gone. We had witnessed the lights and I tell you it was scary as ****. And also the pictures we had to didnt come out, thet had orangish dots all over them. This is a true story!

  5. It’s the same Bragg road as the other story. It actually is between these two towns. The small towns in this part of the state are very close together so people who live in one town or another claim it as their own. The local Beaumont newspaper does a story on this legend every year at Halloween. I lived in the area for three years. 2001-2004

  9. I live in Houston and hunt on a deer lease in East Texas (near Burkeville)and Bragg road is between the two and so my friend Mike and I decided one Thursday night to head out about 12:30 or closer to 1am and detour to “Ghost Road” and see for ourselves on the way to the lease. Well, we got all fired up on the way there and when we arrived at the sign at the entrance of Bragg road, we were pretty spooked. I had never been down the road and I had a trailer pulling a fourwheeler on back and the road was muddy so I was nervous because I didn’t know how it’d be if we had to turn around out there or whatever. Anyways, it was about 2:45am when we arrived and got out and videotaped the sign and all and we had to drive slow because it was slippery but we drove the whole thing and saw nothing! Now, my truck does not allow the lights to turn off while it’s driving so, we had the lights on the whole trip but still saw nothing. The road itself was spooky as are most east Texas dirt roads at night and we kept expecting to see something but didn’t. When we crossed the tracks and came to the highway again we turned and went to my lease. I’m wondering, should we have crossed the highway and stayed on the dirt road? Do we need our lights off? And where is the cemetary?
    Thanks,
    Mark

My brother and I went to braggs road it was spooky,we only saw one light it was orange looking saw if for a few mins and dispeared never saw it again. My brother thoought it was headlights from cars passing by but i don’t think it is cause of how far down the road we were on.We took pictures none really came out that well a few pictures orbs came up on and that was it still that was spooky enough for me.But we do tend to go back again at a later time like around 1am hopefully we will see more then what we saw.

  12. If you have a map of Texas, just find Saratoga,Tx. Then, find the intersection of 787 and 770 just west of Saratoga. If your coming from the west on 770, you’ll turn left on 787 and drive about 5 minutes and see a dark road to the right and it has a sign saying “Ghost road scenic route”. Enter at your own risk! We didn’t see anything though, but it was spooky and it gets muddy so pick a good dry night!

  17. Last night, me and my friends decided to head out to Bragg Road. We live in Jefferson County so it took us a good forty five minutes to get there. We pull into the road and start watching for the light. We go all the way down the road, stopping every few miles to watch. We don’t see anything but drunk teenagers hanging out about half way down the road. So we go all the way to the end and park, trying to decide if we want to take the highway back or make another drive down the road. While discussing, a red glow appears in the middle of the road. It hung in the air for a few seconds and then it was gone. I was a little freaked out and thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me until someone else in the car asked if anybody else saw that. We turn the lights off and watch. A minute or so later we see an orange light that went from left to right and could have no way been headlights because it would get bright and then go out. We watched it for ten or so minutes trying to figure out if it was an oncoming car. It really looked like someone carrying a flashlight or lantern while walking. We decide to go and see if it was a car and were even more freaked out to see the only other car on the road was parked with no lights on about four miles down. There were three of us and we all saw the same thing and were all equally freaked out. I don’t know what we saw, but would like to think it was the light.

I just remember nearly peeing my pants and the group Journey on the radio. I dont remember seeing any lights and all through the time I lived in Texas the stories about hte road were around.

I have always heard stories from my dad, family, and friends, about the Bragg Light, drove up and down the road in the middle of the night many times hell i’ve even partied and got drunk at the pipeline… But I have never seen any lights besides flashlights and carlights. It may be there, but I have never seen it.

Well I must say growing up I never did believe what people had told me. it was more like I just would have to see it for myself. well last night 7/28/06 at 11:00pm a few of us went and we 2 1/2 miles down the road we stopped with lights off and we saw a round white light from behind us, which everyone thought was a car. it was about 300 yards or so from us. the light was about 6ft above the ground then it started to get closer then it jumped about 15ft higher into the air then it came from around 300 yards or so to about 15 feet from the back of our truck in a very very short time. then it moved over to the side of the road and went down to about 5 or so feet above the ground and just went out. so that’s what we saw and now I have to admit I believe some of the stories now.

I do not scare easy. I was totally freaked. Not everyone in Texas that gets killed by a train is beheaded. One of my cousins tryed to beat a train and was hit in his car by the train and he was busted up pretty bad. He did not live but he had his whole body attached did not lose anything. So if you are to scared to go check it out then quite talking about this like it is a joke. For the one who said that you have found his head I would not go there with that attuide if I were you. You just might lose your head to him. I do believe if he found someone with a head he really likes or they go there with that type of attitude then you just might die.

  34. Ive been down Bragg Rd. many times and have seen the ‘lights’. The last time that I was there, some friends and I drew a pentagram in the middle of the dirt road and lit candles ( placing them around the points of the pentagram). We read from a book that is available on my website and began the required chanting. No more than 2 minutes went by before we started seeing the light. The light started down in the brush along the side of the road and ‘floated’ towards us. As we were completing the chant, the light hovered over the 4 of us and began to rise straight into the sky. I would say that the light was about 100 feet above our head when it suddenly started comming right back down, VERY FAST!!! It went right down through the center of the pentagram and then it became extremely quiet. We started looking around at each other and it was right around then that the temperature dropped like 20 degrees. You could feel that there was something there that didnt want us there.
We started packing up after our long night and it was then that we heard what sounded like an owl screecking. My friend was lifted off his feet and thrown back about 15 feet. We almost left him there because we were running our butts off towaqrds the truck! As we drove down the road the light we had seen earlier wass back and seemed to be chasing us. It wasnt until we got back on the road that we lost the light. I dont think that we’ll be going back there this halloween.

  35. I spent my whole life living about two miles from Brag Road. It is a long straight road which has a curve at one end. If you are on the opposite end of the road from the curve, when a car takes the curve at night, you will see a bright white light (headlights), and then a glowing red light (taillights). This, however, is not the bragg light.

Hundreds of people have experienced the Bragg Light. It is something real, although we dont know what. Years ago National Geographic even studied it for an artical. Their opinion was, “Fox Fire” or phosphorous rising from the swampy ground floor, and stumps.

That would not explain the slowly floating orb which has been known to chase cars and people, or to stop on a car hood.

I have seen it myself, and was accompanied by my parents and a lady friend of ours. We all saw it. I dont know what it is, but I do know that it is real.

  39. I just stumbled upon this site and have enjoyed reading the comments. I’d like to share my own experiences with the Bragg Light.

As a kid, growing up in Liberty county, many of my family members often spoke about their encounters with the elusive light in Saratoga. I was always a skeptic and didn’t believe much of it. Finally, at around the age of 15, I decided it was time to venture into the deep East Texas woods and check this thing out for myself. So, one summer night, I rounded up a couple of buddies, one who was old enough to drive, and off to Saratoga we went.

Around 1 a.m., we turned off of FM 787 onto Bragg Rd and within a mile or so we decided that we should turn the headlights off and use the moonlight to guide us the rest of the way. Now, let me tell you, light or no light, Bragg Rd. is (or was in the late-80’s) one lonely, scary place in the wee hours of the morning. After venturing down the road several miles in the dark, as I remember, we reached an agreement that it would be best to pull over to the side of the road and kill the engine.

About an hour passed, as we sat on the roadside in total darkness just shootin’ the breeze and talking about things that teenage boys do, not really thinking about the light. After all, not one of us really expected to see this thing. Suddenly, the guy in the backseat claims to have caught a glimpse of a “floating” light that appeared to be hundreds of yards down the road from where we were parked. I thought he was pulling our leg.

A minute or two later, all doubt and skepticism was gone from everyone in the car. The light reappeared and this time it hung around.

It first appeared a great distance down the road from the car and was very small. It slowly moved closer to a range that I estimate was probably about 50 yards from us. We were all scared to death because at this point it was obvious that this was like nothing we had ever experienced before. The most skiddish, spooked kid in the car actually pee’d on himself! And he’s yet to live it down. Anyway, the light quickly moved from about 50 yards out to nearly right on top of our car in an instant! One second it was hovering about 6 or 7 feet off the ground in front of the hood and the next second it was gone.

One of the creepiest things about the light was the manner in which it moved. It was completely unnatural and not like anything we were familiar with. It also seemed to be aware of our presence. As I remember, the light had a yellow to orange glow about it.

It’s safe to say that we were believers after that night!

We returned to Bragg Rd. several times after that night and was never lucky enough to see the light again. It’s been years since I’ve been down that lonely old dirt road and I’d like to make the trip and try my luck again sometime. It’s neat to read that it has been spotted in recent times.

  40. I have lived within a few miles of this road all of my life. I’m in my late twenties. The light is real and I don’t think it cares who believes in it and who don’t. If it did, then it would show up consistantly. :) …As for the drunks down the road, I must say that they are usually quite friendly. Sometimes, I am among them. Its just quiet place to hang out and noone really bothers you down there. People usually drink at one of the two pipelines down the road, and build a fire or whatever. As far as the light goes, I have seen it probably five or ten times, but I’ve been down the road hundreds of times. I have never been chased or threatened by it and I have even drove down by myself and napped in the bed of my truck waiting on friends to show up late at night. I’m not saying that it won’t, just that when I’ve seen it, it has always been twenty five to fifty yards away. Seems as if the color varies. I’m not saying it was a ghost, but I know for a fact that it wasn’t anything that could be explained simply by some skeptic. Harmless as it may seem, everytime I have seen it, my bood runs cold, the hair on the back of my neck stands up and I get goose bumps.

  41. All,

I and a friend went to Bragg Road recently (02/03/2007 and arrived at the Bragg Rd. around 11: 15 pm. I was about to turn my car into the road when my friend FREAKED OUT AND BEGAN SCREAMING AT ME !!!!
She screamed at me not to turn down the road because their was EVIL in those woods and she could feel it’s presence. She grabbed my steering wheel from me and forced my car nearly off of the road. We came all the way from Houston and this is what I get for bringing a woman along, who joked and laughed with me all the way up to Bragg road for two hours, making fun of Bragg Road. I guess the Bragg Road had the last laugh though. She was so hysterical I had to do as she demanded and turned my car around back to Houston.
Next time, (real soon), I will be returning to Bragg Road solo!!

There are a few Mexican graves in the area, but they are before you get to Bragg and on the opposite side of the highway. Most people from Saratoga (the drunks) know that there is something down there but it cleary only attacks sober people on road trips. I don’t know of anyone who has been physically attacked.

But 2 years ago me and my family and some friends whet to sartoga “my dad has been there twice and has seen it dance in the sky above the tree line” but when we went we dident see nothing.Yesterday me and 4 of my friends went and i have been telling them about it for a while so they wanted to go. my friend driving is my best friend that went the frist time with me, so we get there and they are freaking about when we take the bragg road comeing off from the FM. we were there for about an hour and a half just driving up and down, then we get out of the car. not long after that i see a glowing light at the end of the road like a sunrise. at first i thought it was another car because the road was prutty buzy “btw the light came from the other way… not the way that when people see the car lights and then turn and dissapear no it was from the other way” and it had a very orjange glow to it and it was very far at first but in about 1minute it became very close my friends about 60-80 feet and i was so excited but so freaked out, then we started yelling at it as it got closer. then one of my friends shined the flash light on it but it was to far away to distinguished it as a huax then he quicklt turned the light off and about 10 seconds later he turned the light back on and the light of the flashlight shined past the glowing light and there was nobody near it so we are all freaked out and the light is just floating there. then as we all looked the dissapear and then we all screamed like little girls and it reappeared and then floated over to the other side of the road and dissapeared and then reappeared. we tryed getting closer to it but it wouldent let us it was like beconing us to follow it and we did. we got the last 10seconds on the video camera but it had coved away from us because we got the car to try and chase it down and then a car had turned onto the road and was coming down and then the light vanished. but i beleive my dad now for all these years of ghost lights. Btw he told us not to curse the light if it dident show up. the second time he went with his girlfriend he cursed the light for it dident show and on the way home he hurd a car engine but no car was around him no head lights nothing and then all of a suddent he was hit from behind and he hit a telephone poll.
If you havent been to bragg road you must go. even if you dont see the light the first time if you take some friends it will still be fun… and the road is the spookiest place iv ever seen.

Also some redneck was sitting close to the beginning of the road next to a huge fire, when he saw our car he lifted up a big shotgun and pointed at us. friken weirdo. A while back a scientist examined the air around the siting. He discovered that the actual “lights” we are seeing is a gas called fox fire.

  51. DIRECTIONS FROM BEAUMONT TEXAS:

Take 105 pas Sour Lake (approx 12 miles)

take 770 on the right (there is a school on the left and a 55mph sign)

go approx 4 miles, over a small bridge and take the road to the left
787-go approx 2 miles and you will see the
“OLD GHOST ROAD” sign on the right.
drive about 5 miles doen that road
(there are only 2 turn arounds….go to the 2nd one, it is on the LEFT)

turn your car AROUND so you are facing the way you came in….
that is the direction the light comes from.

and yes, it is an orangish ball that gets bigger and smaller..

  52. I went to the Brag Lights and wow…I never believed anything like this before. Everyone tells me that it is a true thing, but…Like I said….I couldn’t believe it. Well, we went down the road one night that was very clear. All of a sudden we stopped the vehicle, we then saw a light flicker. The orange glow just went from one side of the road to the other. We tried driving closer to it…But it just kept getting further away the closer we got to it. But it would go across the road, then come back across the road. It went across probably 3 times and then dissappeared into the woods. I know that it was true then. I dont really know WHAT it was, but…It freaked me out.

  55. I have been to bragg road, aka “Ghost road”. A cop lives on that road now from what I believe. My brother and a couple of friends use to take girls out there to freak them out and scare the heck out of them. It is for real though. I see it every time I go out. Once the light came up from the side of our car though and that kind of freaked me out. All the other times it has come from behind us or in front.

I did research on the road about a year ago. The road use to be a loading track for the train tracks across the highway(where they say the dead witch is burried). Anyway there was a record of a man who lost his head on that track, and shortly after not even three years the tracks were torn down and a dirt road was laid over the once laid tracks. Rumors say they tore the tracks down and let the crews go because men were droping like flies out there.

Not sure how much of the research is truth. However, I did get a lot of the info from a place not to far from there. Cleveland TX library.

  58. I find this pretty funny. I have never seen the light myself never actually been there during the night either. My dad however grew up there and said he has seen this light on many occasions. My dads grandfather my great grandfather actually was the one who signed the death certificate of the said man whose ghost that roams searching for his head. Funny thing is from the stories I have heard the doctor states that he died of natural causes. They dont know what happened to his head or how he lost it just that they found is decapitated body by the railroad.

  59. That is the most combined and warped version of this story I have ever heard. The Motel and the alleged RR worked have nothing in common. Now I have heard a couple of freaky stories about the motel, and how someone saw it as they passed, even though it was long gone years before.
