Buried in the Back

07.23.2005 | 12:47 pm | Kansas, Kansas City, United States

Many years ago, a crazed man killed his wife and two children inside this home. He then buried them in the back yard and jumped from the third floor balcony and fell to his death. Today, lights mysteriously flicker and objects move themselves.

  1. This is a nice site but I’m somewhat disappointed it the extremly short descriptions of the various hauntings.
Oh and by the way, if you have not been updated on the Stull Cemetary in Stull Kansas (one of the 7 gateways to hell), the old church has been destroyed and is no longer there. :)

  7. I know of this place. I was going to college at KSU and one of my friends from KC took me home with her. She was telling me about this place that a guy had killed his family.. I was like yeah right.. where is it, let’s go. So, she took me.

There in her neighborhood, they call it “the castle” bec/ it is so much bigger than the other houses around that area. When we went, the place was fenced off. I am really not sure why… so we didn’t get to go in… There were condemned signs all over the fences.. most the time when a place is condemned, as far as I know, the place is too bad for people to live in…

The first time we drove by it was day time.. didn’t see too much… later that day, we went shopping and to World’s of Fun… and the whole day, all I could think about was “the castle”. So I talked Belinda into taking me back…

We drove up to the house. It was dark… and did not look like anything was going on… so, we parked the car at a trailer that looked abandoned across the street… we walked up to the fence.. and the upstairs light came on… that light went off right away.. then, the porch light came on… I freaked out and ran off… got in the car and drove back to her house…

So, I am not sure if it was someone playing a joke or what.. All I know is that I got scared… Lights turning on and off.. not something I want to mess with. If a spirit has the ablility to manafest itself in such a manner, I don’t think I want to be near it.

Belinda told me a little of the background to the story though…

There was a man.. he was normal. Had a good job and what not. One day, he went to work and his boss fired him. He got home and stayed locked up for days and days (maybe even weeks, I am not sure). His wife was trying to get him to come out. She failed, so she told him that she and the 2 kids were going to play in the backyard and she would come back and check on him in a few hours. Well, a little time passed and the wife looked up and her husband was outside. She was exstatic to see him.. She ran to him to give him a hug, when he shot her in the stomach. His son, the oldest child saw this, and freaked out. He ran to the door. Thinking that his son was going to tell on him, he shot him too. His little girl was sitting by a small pond that they had out back. He walked over to her, grabbed her and drowned her in the pond. He buried all three of them in the backyard and then went back to bed. A few days later, one of his wife’s friends came to the house to see where his wife was and if he was doing any better. She couldn’t find him, so she went to the backyard. He was face down, on the ground, in a puddle of blood-soaked grass. She looked over at the small pond and she saw bubbles coming up from the bottom. She looked in the pond to see if she could see anything, there was nothing. She went and called the police. The police came back and found all of the family buried in the backyard.

They say that even though the pond is now dry, that you can still see bubbles rise to the surface of the dirt.

That is the way I heard it… I don’t know if it is true.

  10. I found out that this house is on Shawnee Road. It is right off of I-70 and Rainbow. Go North on Rainbow to Shawnee Rd. It will be on the left side. The road is really winding and there are lots of trees.. Good luck

  11. the real story of this house is that they had a pool in thier backyard and their daughter drowned in it and died and so they had the pool filled in but if you look the dirt looks fresh…its weird but anyway the parents went crazy mr. saur went to the war and we he came back his wife was dead he was devastated and he hung himself in the bell tower it is said that on halloween at midnight you can see two figures dancing and then being pulled apart and one being hung it used to have an old beat up fence around it but now it has a huge one they have dogs inside the fence so i wouldnt suggest jumping it and alse the people to the right of the home own it…so if they catch you im sure you gonna be in trouble they used to give tours of the house im not sure why they stopped but thats the story….my grandmother and grandfather knew the people that owned the house so im not a liar =D

  14. If you guys are talking about the house on shawnee road, it’s called Sauer Castle. It’s a historical landmark, and they are currently in the process of renovating it. It’s a really great place to go, but from what I’ve heard the guy who owns the house now lives next door and he’s not very kind to people who get too close. I had a crazy experience there too.

It was around halloween time and a bunch of friends of mine and me decided to go see sauer castle. This was my first time going and I was PUMPED. I was half drunk to begin with (luckily we had a designated driver that night) and we got there really quick because my friend lives in westport. When we turned onto shawnee road, it was really kind of odd because Sauer castle is right smack dab in the middle of residential, normal looking houses. It’s really gloomy looking at night…and we stopped the car and looked at it from the street…I was so amazed that I forgot about everything else around the house…then all of a sudden something hit the car and screamed…we sped out of there like a bat out of hell! Then we decided to go back and find out what the heck that was…well much to my disappointment, it was one of the locals that lives in that neighborhood that decided it would be hilarious to scare the living hell out of us while we were looking at the castle. So if you want to go there…beware of the locals, especially if it’s around halloween, they like to mess with people that come to look at the castle.

And has anyone heard the story of Igor that goes along with the castle, the crazy guy that worked at the pharmacutecal plant? If so please comment back if you know more info on that.

  18. The story I’d heard was different than the one presented but Saur Castle is popular in KCK. I’ve also heard that the ‘Castle’ had been open to public tours in the past but that there had been accidents (people ‘falling’ down the steps etc) so they closed it up.

I have always found the story interesting and the house is amazing. When I was in high school in the early 90’s I drove by often to see what I could see and I had a strange experience once.

One night I drove to the house with a couple of friends, we parked in front of the house (it was fenced in back then too) to look at it. Then I’m not really sure what happened, things became surreal, time seemed to slow and my radio wouldn’t work right. We all just sat there kind of in a trance (but that sounds more kookey then it was). Finally we all kind of came out of it at the same time and I quickly drofe away, we were all really freaked out.

I still drive by from time to time (always have difficulty finding the place though). I hope it gets renovated and opened back up for tours though I’d love to get a closer look.

  19. “The Castle” as it is refered to is Sauer Castle and there was no pool in the yard and yes Mr. Sauer killed his family there and burried them in the backyard. Not all the bodies have been uncovered and he had more then two children. The reason I know this is I’ve been there. I know who owned it before a Sauer family member took ownership again.

The Christmas decorations would be taken of the tree only so far up and laid neatly on the floor. We believe from the ghosts of the children. In the basement you could be shoved by a spirit.

Nobody is allowed on the property last I heard.
