I’ve stayed at the Buxton twice with my family, both times around the Christmas holidays, and we all love it there! Things have happened on both occasions, and to more than one member of my family. The most reccent visit wasn’t as eventful, but that may be because we were staying in the house adjacent to the main house. We were in the ‘Children’s Room’ on the second floor, and I was getting eerie feelings from the bathroom and bed next to the door leading to the ballcony enterance all night. As I was asleep on the floor the next morning, my younger brother stepped over my body to turn on the TV, and as he did, a lamp on the table next to the wall flicked on by it’s own accord…odd, considering it was the type of lamp you have to twist to turn on. Later, my family went down to get breakfast, but since I was so tired, I decided to stay in the room and sleep on the bigger bed. Bad idea. Shortly after they had left, I was woken by the sound of someone walking from the door that led to the ballcony enterance towards the head of the bed I was sleeping in. I distinctly heard a breathing sound, and out of fear, laid completely still and pretended that I was asleep. I header a low chuckle, and then the ‘whatever’ turned towards the bathroom and walked into it. I heard the breathing turn in that direction, and listened as the footsteps continued to the small ‘punishment cupboard’ next to the toilet. I didn’t hear anything else after that.
On our first trip, we stayed in Room 9, more commonly known as ‘Bonnie’s Room’. Walking through the room, I was taking photos as random, and later discovered in a picture of the vanity table, a woman’s figure in the mirror. The figure was shaded blue, and looked as though it was wearing a hat. She was not smiling, and looked to be in her late forties. After examining the room, I realized that there was no way a reflection could have mistakenly be the source of the image, and no one was in the room when I took the picture, myself included, as I was standing in the doorway in an angle to where my reflection was not in the mirror.
Later, while everyone was asleep, my mother got up to use the bathroom. She left the door open, as we had left the light on to see, and had just sat down on the toilet when the door began to close on it’s own. She watched it move until it was almost completely closed, at which point she said ‘I don’t like that!’ and the door flung back open. At first, she thought it was one of us playing a trick on her, until she realized we were all dead asleep. She also noticed that, just as it was when we had gone to bed, the door was still propped open with one of my father’s dress shoes.
Once more, after coming back upstairs from dinner, I decided to walk around and try to get something on camera. Walking past the second floor ballroom, I heard my name called very clearly. I turned around, thinking someone would be standing in the doorway, and realized that the lights were out and no one was inside.

Never believed in ghosts, and didn’t know that the Buxton was haunted even though I had been a student at Denison. Years after graduating (2000?), a few girlfriends and I went back for a late fall visit and booked a room at Buxton. We didn’t intend to do so, but we booked room 9 which is one of the most haunted rooms, supposedly where an inn keeper had died. Sure enough, the room felt “dark and heavy” immediately. Odd sounds filled the room around me, so much so, that I slept with the covers over my head the whole night. I felt a very strong presence that someone was very close to me and checking me out. My friend sleeping next to me felt the same presence and later said she saw a woman sitting at the foot of our bed. The night started off extremely cold in the room and got extremely hot like hell was breathing down my neck!! Two girls were sleeping in the adjoining room and were snoring loudly. Then I heard a very loud stomping (3 stomps) on the wooden floor in their room and they both stopped snoring due to the loud sound…Although neither girl woke up. It was like the “thing” was mad that they were snoring. I know this sounds bizarre, but I absolutely 100% know that there was a being not-of-this-earth in that room with us. I did not sleep a wink…Really the toughest night of my life.

A friend and I were having a beer in the basement of the Buxton Inn several years ago. In the course of our conversation, I looked up to see my friend staring oddly at me. He asked me, “why did you say that”? I asked what and he said I stared off oddly and said “corsets, corsets, corsets”. I had absolutely no recollection of saying any such thing and he was being totally honest. He was freaked out… I was unaware of haunting issues at the time.

I just have to say, I stayed at the Buxton for the first time in my life this past weekend and it was the most lovely place I think I have ever seen. The food was sheer perfection and the atmosphere was welcoming and wonderful. We did not see or hear anything while there, altho my daughter did take a picture of one of the beautiful fountains in the courtyard, only to have the picture come out in the form of a shadowy apparition surrounded by a soft white mist, with light streaks streaking off to the right side of the picture…….??? I honestly don’t know how that happened, I was standing immediately behind her looking at the screen on her camera as she snapped the picture and her screen merely showed a clear-as-a-bell picture of the fountain. So maybe it was ‘something’, and maybe it wasn’t, we’ll never know. But it was kind of a neat experience. I have to admit that I am not ‘attuned’ to things of this nature, so the only ‘vibes’ I got from the Inn were calming and peaceful, as it was such a beautiful area. I also have to say that I got the best night’s sleep I’ve probably had in the last ten years! We do plan to go back at some point and try to rent the two most ‘haunted’ rooms, just to see what happens, but given that it was Halloween weekend, they were already taken this trip. But I would recommend this inn to anyone who wanted a wonderful place to get away for a night or two, it was a wonderful experience for us.

Ten years ago I remember walking after dinner in the gardens and walked past an open shed..it was around 9:30 or so and my girlfriend and I both saw a very small blue light coming from the back of the shed. We watched it and tried to figure out what it was and then left thinking it was nothing…We came back from walking around the gardens past the shed and it was not there. Still not sure what it was.
My best story came across the street at the Granville Inn. We were staying all night there in a end room so it was very isolated. Around 3:00 I heard what sounded like someone picking up boxes and putting them down….right outside our door! It was loud and both heard it. After I heard it again I opened the door to see the hallway was empty. I noticed across from our room was a storage room with the doors locked and shut. There was no doubt in what we both heard because I was going to complain about it to the front desk that if you want to do some housekeeping wait until morning…not 3:00….now that was weird

I am 15 years old and I’m staying in room seven as I type this. I am staying here with my father and, being ghost enthusists, we came here to try to capture evidence of anything. As soon as I walked into the room, I though, “oh wow, this place is very nice and quaint” the first thing I noticed was the bedside table pulled away from the wall and the glass cover on the bed, & the small chair next to the tv was in the middle of the room. My father and I dismissd these to assume the maids were vacuming and forgot to place these items back. As I walked towards the back room with the smaller bed, my mood changed. Even now just looking into the room, I get an erie feeling, like someone’s in there and it doesn’t want me in there. Thankfully my father will be staying in that room and by the end of our night I will make another update on what I have seen &/or heard.

We were at the Buxton on 11/12/2011 for dinner. A few of us went to the second floor (up the front stairs at the front desk) to use the restroom. There is a a banquet room of sorts off the upstairs hallway. We had a digital recorder with us. The banquet room was empty and dark. One person in our party took the digital recorder and asked, “is anyone here?” then commented about the pictures on the walls. At the time we heard nothing. Upon reviewing the recording a couple of hours later, we heard what sounded like chamber orchestra music and a muffled voice. It was truly an experience.
