Carnegie Library

07.23.2005 | 9:25 pm | Missouri, St. Joseph, United States

The Carnegie Library is supposedly haunted by the spirit of a former librarian. When nearing closing time, some people have reported hearing footsteps from an unknown entity, as well as someone saying “shhhhh”. Some accounts even claim that books have moved from shelf to another shelf on their own.

  15. I have lived in St. Joe my whole life, 38 years, and have been going to this library since I was in elementary school. I have never heard it was haunted, but when my kids were small I would take them downstairs to the childrens library for their books. Sometimes when we were down there alone, I would hear someone walking around right outside the door. Needless to say, no one was there. I didnt like going down stairs and would hurry my kids in picking out their books, if we were the only ones down there.

  23. This is so weird.Whenever I was a kid i used to hate going down stairs because it was always so cold. And everytime I got to the bottom of the steps I just got a really eerie feeling.I completely believe this one.

  31. Well, I live in St.Joe and i’ve only been to that library a few times. I agree with Lisa. When I was a kid I never ever wanted to go downstairs because there was this door that I always though I heard someone knocking on. And I could hear people walking out there as well. And it was just a little bit to freaky for me.I still get scared just thinking about it.

  33. Well I have lived in the central district of st joe and on place in the whole school that is actually haunted is the room that all the tunnels lead to. The one with the chair that is chained to the floor…. trust me its true i’ve seen people that aren’t there………

  34. You have the wrong library on this posting. It is the Downtown Branch of the St. Joseph Public Library on 10th and Felix Street that you are talking about. It is supposedly haunted by a ghost named Rosy who had been a very dedicated librarian there. She doesn’t say “shh” but she has been heard to walk around at night. There have been many newspaper stories published over the years about the library ghost. How about correcting the library in your listing?

    Comment by Saundra | 10.31.2007 | 10:04 pm

  35. Shauna is partly right. The downtown library is also supposed to be haunted, but the story about Carnegie Library has been told correctly. Like many of you have already recounted, I was also a little freaked out when I went into the basement (children’s area) as a kid. But I never saw or heard anything unusual.

  36. I meant “Saundra” not “Shauna”. Sorry.

  37. Hey well I am only thirteen and have been going to that library for as long as I can remember. It’s a pretty great place, but once, when I was with my best friend Amy, she went upstairs to go get her mom, and I turned around and felt a sudden chill, and I could feel someone watching me very closely. I knew there was a spirit in that children’s section, and my feelings told me that it was a girl. No Joke.
