The Cavalier Hotel

Virginia Beach, Virginia
By Shannon Reinbold-Gee

Overlooking beautiful North Beach in the bustling city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, this elegant hotel features far more than a stunning view and its dramatic chandelier-hung lobby with glossy checkerboard floors and sharply contrasting paneled walls. This, the original Cavalier Hotel, has ghosts. Elevators run when no one is riding in them, toilets flush of their own accord and guests report that their room towels change color from time to time. But these are only little oddities compared to the tragedies that began only two short years after the Cavalier opened on what was then a rather secluded strip of beach.

Many guests have remarked on architectural similarities between the old hotel and the Overlook hotel featured in the movie “The Shining.” Perhaps it is also the creepy feeling of something always lurking that causes visitors to draw such connections. Guests have reported they feel like they are being watched in both the Pocahontas room and the Hunt Room. Perhaps it is the waiter who supposedly walks through the walls of the Pocahontas room or the lady followed by a ghostly dog crossing the hotel lobby, or perhaps it is merely someone who still broods about the misfortunes of their lost life…

Opening in 1927 (after 13 months of steady labor), the Cavalier was once the haunt of the movers and shakers of society, hosting such guests as Adolph Coors (of the famous brewery), author F. Scott Fitzgerald, and actors and actresses including Judy Garland, Will Rogers, Bette Davis, Betty Grable, Mary Pickford, Ginger Rogers and Jean Harlow. For three decades the Cavalier hired a wide variety of big-name bands. Performers included such greats as Tomy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Glen Miller, Lawrence Welk and Bing Crosby. Now guests report that the piano in the ballroom sometimes plays by itself—maybe wishing for the raucous music of the Twenties.

Nicknamed the “Aristocrat of the Virginia Seashore” the Cavalier was the spot to see and be seen, so it’s no wonder some guests are reluctant to depart. Ten US Presidents have also stayed or spoken at the Cavalier, bringing with them the rumors, speculation and debate that guests, both living and dead, seem to feed on.

During the Roaring Twenties, the Cavalier skirted Prohibition by driving well-to-do guests on discreet trips to the local speakeasies. This evading of the law was not enough to keep brewery owner Adolph Coors from a mysterious fall that ended his death on June 5, 1929. Whether suicide because the brewery was forced to make cement and pottery rather than beer during Prohibition, or murder (as some feel Coors was pushed through a closed window on the hotel’s 6th floor), people have reported sensing someone still lingering and cold spots appearing randomly throughout the 6th floor. Many have even reported the sickening sound of flesh slapping concrete—could it be that Adolph Coors relives his tragic plunge on a regular basis?

Local lore claims that the hotel’s first owner shot himself on the premises, but it seems unsubstantiated as a hotel staff member said the initial owners of the hotel were a group of people investing in a business venture and they held it until the Dixon family purchased it. So, although the rumor can’t be attached to a specific person through my research, perhaps it was one of the original owners or one of the Dixon family members who committed suicide on the property. Or, perhaps (as is the case too often), this “fact” is merely a case of rumors evolving and growing.

The hotel’s front desk is occasionally plagued by guests calling to report a cat meowing and scratching at doors in the hotel’s grand hallways, though no living cat has been seen roaming the halls in decades. Rumor has it that a young girl’s pet cat escaped one night and drowned in the swimming pool—the little girl also drowning as she tried to save her precious pet. Though the girl’s ghost has not been sighted and people only occasionally report strange sounds from the pool, perhaps the cat still wanders the halls trying to find his worried young owner.

Visitors report mysterious orbs showing up in their photos and hearing footsteps where no one is seen walking. A popular tale revolves around sightings of an older African American gentleman dressed in the hotel’s old staff uniform. Guests report that he stands on the staircase of the sixth floor and warns people of ghosts ahead. Unfortunately, it seems he himself is a ghost, as there hasn’t been any staff to fit his description working at the hotel in more than a few years.

Today the Cavalier Hotel is truly two distinct hotels—the Cavalier on the Hill (the original and still haunted) and the Cavalier Oceanfront (beautiful and at peace except when tourist season begins).

Dear Mr./Ms.Cary Kitty:
Sorry I do not know which gender you are therefore please excuse the mr./ms in the heading.

However with that being said believe me even though you are a “former employee” that is what I was told when I STAYED THERE this past March 2010. I was at a convention and there printed on the rules and in our packets it stated in black and white as well as on a big poster board; DO NOT ASK THE EMPLOYEES ANYTHING CONCERNING THE “ACTIVITY” at the Cavalier Hotel. They can be FIRED for it. In fact when I even asked about the small structure on top of the building or, why did they seal the main staircase there no one could give me the answer. Maybe you being a former employee can tell us why and when they sealed the main staircase off or the fact that when they have a CONVENTION there that they did not stock any of the machines. Or the fact they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) even bring a simple blanket to a room.

Also we were told that we would have total access to the whole hotel however, that was not true when our convention was there because they shut down the grand ball room areas and the upper staircases off. As I stated before it has a creepy feeling but I rather base a haunting on science/fact rather than gut instincts or, feeling. Just because YOU didn’t see or, have anything happen to you doesn’t mean it’s not there. Hauntings don’t happen on cue for you. Geesh….

Dear Ms. Jessica:
1) I do not think that the other workers there are/were total *****’s nor the rest of the staff. In fact the two day time staff personnel there that I talked to, were very nice and very polite in their explainations. Therefore your comment was totally childish, rude and uncalled for. And to even imply that I’m just being a complaining witch of a customer is even more immature. I stated in the last comment from experience when I stayed there along with other facts. And since you’re a former employee may be you can explain when and why the main staircase was sealed off? Because none of the other staff that I talked to seems not to know anything about this establishment(other than what I found out on my own prior to being there).

2) Nobody ever stated to any member of the convention that that certain areas were off limits after certain hours. They were informed that the groups staying there were suppose to have full access to the hotel. Also not all of the public is bad therefore to imply that the people staying there will ruin or, trash a place by their occupation is just plain rude. Also as I stated before, when I asked questions about the structure (and I assure you that I was very polite when I asked them and worded my questions very carefully so no one would get into trouble of any kind per agreement as stated in our rules) nobody could give me an answer. I ended up doing research on my own.
3) However there is an explaination for some of the “feelings” (ie creepiness) that have been stated in past comments. In some of the areas there are high (buried my emf needle on my meter)emf readings in the hotel. It is not just in one spot in the hotel and high EMF can cause some side effects what is called EMF sentitivty in some people. Talk to some of the local groups in the area or, even look up EMF readings/ EMF Senitivy and effects online. It would explain alot of the “feelings” there. As for myself (and as I stated before) I rather base my findings on science, the evidence and experience rather than just a creepy feeling or, by instinct. Now do I feel that the Cavlier Hotel on the Hill is haunted? At this time I can not give you an honest answer for I could not perform a full and effective investigation at the time. With the above being said; Do I have EVP’s from the Hotel? Yes I do however it does not prove total paranormal activity (ie a haunting). For that A full investigation is warranted to disprove or, actually prove paranormal activity in itself.
Thank you for your time on this matter. I hope you have a very nice evening.

Ms. Jessica;
1) I’m not you hon or honey.

With that being said; I can see why you are a FORMER employee if you ever were an employee there in the first place.
Your reply explains the lack of education has well and lack of common coursity toward others. And I do doubt that you will ever care for other than yourself. Also before you tell people to get an effin life and call them names, look at yours. Remember those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
3)For the record I was there on business and for not being a child, you should quit acting like a child. Nor should you be making implications and posting untrue things online about people you do not know.

Now I made honest posts without being rude nor using profanity about my experience there at the Cavalier Hotel. If you can’t express yourself without the use of profanity then I suggest that you shouldn’t post until you learn that others do not appreciate those type of comments either(including the monitors).
To be quite frank, I wouldn’t believe anything you say at this point for your posts with it’s insults, untrue slanderous accusations and profanity says it all.
Good Luck.

My husband and I and our two children just recently spent three days at the Cavalier Hotel on the hill and although when I first walked in I told my husband that it reminded me of the shinning and I got a little weird feeling I did not experience too much expect the minor feeling of being watched. My husband woke up in the middle of the night feeling that someone was jumping by our bed and he thought it was our son but when he awoke no one was there, I was so tired from our day out that i did not hear anything. My son told me later in the day he felt like something was pushing on him in his bed.

Dear Mr. Robert
I really wouldn’t advise that. 1) It’s illegal. aka breaking and entering (ie B & E) can and usually does carry a prison/jail term. 2) Ouija Boards (ie weegie boards) can be fun however, it’s also known to open doors that are sometimes best left closed. 3) Most places can not be held liable for your misdeeds (nor any injuries that can occur)also you can be held criminally and/or fincially liable even if you get hurt.

Unless you want to invite trouble it’s not a good idea to do either one again. I know it sounds lame but try getting permission to investigate the hotel instead. Even if you’re turned down, at least you would have more credit with others trying.

I stayed at this hotel in 2007 and I can tell you something is definitely there! We went swimming late at night and when we went into the deep end it felt as if something was pulling us under. It also feels like something is watching over you on the balconies at the pool. Also we could have sworn we felt something around us in the room where the piano is. The hallways, and elevator seems ok but outside our room the elevator kept stopping on our floor and no one was coming out. Never saw or heard a cat like others have, the actual guest room felt ok and not haunted. The pool at night is by far the creepiest thing i’ve ever felt in my life!

Plumbing came up, he turned off the shower. Then again it immediately turned right back on. Plumber refer her to go to another room on second floor. which then saw the door slammed after she left. I’ve lived in the north end of va beach for 23 years now. I’ve been at a couple of places that are haunted. I drive by the Cavalier everyday going to work on f/s. They have been doing work on holly rd so sometimes I cut through the church next to it, I saw a woman in an old fashioned dress that did not look like belonged there on the edge of the property. Looking up to see if I was going to crash she was gone. The north end of the beach is a haunted area period. I’ve seen ghosts on the base, near the ARE bldg. and one house I lived in for a while had several spirits in it. No doubt in my mind the cavalier is haunted. It spooks me just to look at it. To stay a night would creep me out, but I dare anyone to tell me the north end of the beach is not haunted. I spent a week at a cottage on f/story, I don’t ever want to stay again. It totally freaked me, my dog, and my guests.

I live in virginia beach and i live only 10 minutes away from the cavalier hotel. A whole bunch of my friends and I decided to check out the hotel, they let you do tours to the hotel. it is a very nice hotel looks great, but when walking around you do get this erie feeling, and we saw bubbles in the middle of the pool and no one was in there. also if you go on the elevator if you hit the 6th floor button you go straight down. when we asked the person at the front desk whats up with the 6th floor he said they were renavating and when we asked another he said their is no sixth floor,it was creepy. there were cookies on each step in the stair ways. and in the bathroom they still had slave ways to make the slaves go thru out the hotel while working but not to be seen, there was dolls and old vodo things it was crazy. the cavalier hotel is very much so haunted.

What time of year do you have to go for all the “haunted” things to occur? My friends and I were planning a trip next month, not knowing it was two different buildings! Now I’m bummed because I wanted scary stuff to happen…

I love things about the supernatural, because its something that can’t be explained by science or be proven as something that our mind is doing. Paranormal activity happens because there is a spirit of someone or something that is trapped in a certain area or just trapped on earth. Some of them don’t want to harm us some can’t, but there are those who can and will. I believe they want to be set free, that somehow someway their souls are doomed to wander the earth forever unless they can find help. I think that’s the reason they try to speak to us, because they need our help.

My fiance and I decided to tour the Cavalier friday night and took many photos while touring this gorgeous hotel. It instantly reminded me of the movie “The Shining” we decided to take the stairwell from the 6th floor all the way down. When we reached the 5th floor stairwell, my fiance stopped abrubtly as we entered it…his eyes were like teacups and he backed into the door…he told me had just witnessed a pair of legs on the stairs and could see them in the window’s reflection! We took the stairs down and came to the main lobby. I turned around and noticed a solid black figure walking in front of the front doors very quickly. We left the building and walked the courtyard and later came home and tranferred the photos that were taken and notice several orbs of different sizes in almost every photo we took. It was fun and exciting….we are going back this weekend with a few friends to tour it again!!!
