Cemetery
This cemetery is said to have been built by a Satanic family so that they might have an eternal resting place. In the middle of the cemetery, there are thirteen steps that lead to nowhere. Called the thirteen steps to hell, it is said that once a person walks downs these stairs, they perish instantly. Others, who have barely made it out alive, have reported seeing their spirit in hell at the bottom of the steps. It is reported that one man ran across the cemetery and was scared so badly, that he was never seen again.

I think this is the cemetary at the edge of Port Towsand, it is name after an Indian. The Maresa Castle which is also on this link states it’s in this town but the town is Prt Townsand. I have been in the room below where the Monk hund himself, He actually hung himself in the attic but the room below is haunted or so they say. Also the lighthouse at Fort Warden which is at the edge of town is supposedly haunted, (they filmed Officer and Gentleman there and in part of Port Townsand)

Sorry for my last posting, I know where smokey point road is but do not know where the cemetary is. I am not from that area of washington.
I have a hard time thinking someone would get pushed over but I know it happens and I have experienced paranormal stuff myself but I wouldn’t tempt it if it’s real active

Okay…just did the Maltby cemetery today. Drove around a bit but was finally able to find it after going home and researching the GPS coordinates on google earth.com. When you turn onto Paradise lake Rd. from 522, set your odometer to zero. The turn off spot and path is approx. 2.6 miles on your right heading south. Park at the gravel turn off. The trail head is on the left with your back to the road. The scariest part of the whole thing was the 1/4 mile hike to the place…trees on the path, and yes we did see the old rusted out cars on the left side of the path. You reach a big pile of branches etc. I think it is put there to try and keep people out. Just after the pile there is a big clearing and the cem is on the left. To the right there are back yards. Oh, and there is a keep out sign on one of the trees near the pile. We didn’t feel comfortable just walking out in the clearing to the cem.So what we did was walk to the left of the stick pile down a small ravine. There is sort of a rough path that leads to the terraced cem. This way you are most of the way hidden. Though we couldn’t really get to see the whole thing with out eventually possibly being seen. We saw maybe 10 to 15 sites..there is are most likely more.
The names we read were not Doolittle like mentioned in earlier blogs. We did see the name Davies. But I am thinking that maybe if you just went to one of the houses there and just asked if you could quietly take a few minutes to look…who knows, that might be better then all the sneaking around. Sounds like from all the activity that the cem is very busy…maybe the owners should charge admission ![]()
If you do go into the residential area…there is a circled dead end and what looks like a path leading back..but again there are many many keep out signs. You would definitely be seen. I would go late at night and park somewhere else and go that way. I think that is more direct then trying to navigate the other path in the dark. And yes there are dogs barking but I think there is a kennel near by.
It is unfortunate that there has been so much vandolizing etc…at the cemetery..kinda ruined it for the rest of us who are curious, oh well…be safe if you go and please be respectful.

Yes this was real years ago, I grew up right next door so to say. Since the days that I went it has been cemented over to keep people from coming and destroying someones final resting place. It is also gated off so good luck getting there. It is a good story though.

The “13 Steps to Hell” do not exist. I went there last October with some friends on a late night outing. The cemetery is kind of in “tiers” since it is built on a hillside. There are some steps that lead down to another tier, and I think I counted 10. There are other rumors that the “13 Steps” have been covered and filled in with cement. The only cement slab in the cemetery is about a little less than two feet wide and four feet long; obviously not big enough to cover a staircase. This was my first trip to a “haunted” place, and I really do believe I felt the paranormal. I heard voices of old men and both my friend and I saw white figures on the trees along the trail. Some other people I know that have visited it at night have felt the paranormal there as well.

Hello everyone. So…some strange stuff surrounds this topic. This will be half accounts from people and half informational. I had been researching many firsthand accounts of people that had been there prior to the bulldozing of the “steps”. Stories vary slightly, but there are many all with very similar outcomes. People walk down the steps; turn around, and instead of seeing a path back up the steps, they are driven to their knees with a glimpse into hell. Several younger people have come back from the steps in a near comatose state, one account of a young man who had a similar experience never spoke to anyone or uttered a word afterwards and apparently died not long after the ordeal. I’ve heard of accounts from locals–most probably old wives tales–stating that sometimes the cemetery simply isn’t there, and appear only to those who know what to look for, or those who in the paranormal world are called “hyper sensitive’s”. One account from a middle aged gentleman who had been to the steps before they were bulldozed was particularly noteworthy in not only its contrast to other accounts but more so in it’s incredibly stark symbolism. His description was certainly the most detailed, but to put in short he basically said that he started down the steps fine, but with each descending step it became harder to breathe, he thought he heard voices and whispers, experienced an “unaccounted for” weight. The strangest thing about this account was that he mentioned in detail getting to the 12th step and being startled at the sight of a chair just after the 13th step; A chair which he swears hadn’t been there a blink before. A man at the local chevron station has told me that occasionally he has heard of a chair appearing before a person after the last step, and according to folklore, sitting in the chair gives you the gift of some kind of second sight, but in more traditional folk symbolism it could be seen as more of a curse as it may in fact be along the lines of “A gift given, a price paid.” And a truly evil one at that, as doing so may in fact designate your soul to the devil himself. One other account dictates a man descending the steps, stopping for a bit as he reached the bottom, and slowly turning to face back up the steps. Witnesses with him described his face upon turning around as going from slightly un-amused, to pale, and finally to agape in a silent horror, all within an instant. Those with him knew something was terribly wrong, but before anyone could do anything to help or reach him, the man bolted into the woods. Whether a fictional twist or not, it was said the man wasn’t found after the incident; Dead or alive.
The Steps are no longer there, I’ve heard they were cemented and also that they were simply bulldozed over. I hear stories all the time of people having ghostly encounters and hearing strange noises, and some stating that absolutely nothing seemed out of the ordinary excepting that it was a graveyard, and graveyards by nature can be creepy, macabre places. The fact is: many people that went down those steps didn’t come out of the experience the same, and some of the tales allege that a few did not survive the ordeal, simply crumpling to the ground as if their life had been snuffed out. All accounts of this type use the same description, no matter how big or small: they all couldn’t help but feel there was something very wrong and/or evil about the place. Similar descriptions, similar outcomes. Mass hysteria due to a preordained notion of the fate of those who descend the steps? Possibly. But the after effects suffered by some can’t be ignored. A few quotes to share which I think explain the sentiment:
“Up until today you believed there was a line between myth and reality. Maybe a very fine line sometimes but at least there was a line…If they’re real, what else is real? You know what lives in the shadows now. You may never get another night’s sleep as long as you live.” –Anonymous Author (Sorry, tried to find where it came from. No luck.)
“Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster; and if you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes into you.” –Friedrich Neitzsche
As to the notion of Satanic practices being performed on the site and it’s possible relationship to Hellenic visions: I have heard on third hand account that several locals who grew up very near to the cemetery during it’s active days had seen small groups of these Satanists at certain parts of the cemetery on some nights. One man said that when he was a boy he had had his pet goat taken one night, and he knows without a hint of a doubt, to this day, that it had been taken for ritualistic sacrifice and the memory of his fright is very real.
Today not much remains to look at, barring the regular cemetery scenery of hedgestones and slightly subdued scenery. The steps are gone, the church which was once on the sight is gone, and the 13 steps were said to be the very ones leading down into the church basement. Rumors of a crypt are sparse and some say it was not so much a crypt but simply an unoccupied plot covered by a slab of stone. No stairs or anything speaking of a traditional crypt. The slab of stone most likely to have been the “crypt” can be seen still in the cemetery, however there is no opening or entry underneath, just packed earth. Whether it was an actual crypt or not, this too was covered and filled in.
There are two peculiar things especially about this place that, to me, gives me a definite feeling that not all is what meets the eye. On one gravestone the symbol of a pentagram is clearly engraved, whether or not it is upside down or right side up I don’t rightly know, the difference between the two is obviously of great import. Upside down would have to do with darker things: black magic, satanic worship, witchcraft, etc. Right side up would basically constitute the polar opposite. The other strange thing which is even more elusive and peculiar is the inscription “Order of Pendo” on one stone. All the research I’ve attempted on this has yielded little to no result, because it is a secretive society much like freemasons (which basically means nothing gets out). I did find that it has been associated with the spiritual world of things, and other equally mysterious notions. Those two signs to me point towards something, but digging into it seems more or less futile. Believe what you want, if you’re like me you see too many signs and hear of too many experiences to discredit offhand this seemingly frightening place, but know that the full story behind maltby cemetery–if there even is some more shadowy history behind the place–will most likely not be uncovered. If you take into account the many over exaggerations and accounts from some people who either like attention far too much or were inebriated in some manner during their experiences, you’re left with a big fat question mark…albeit a very forbidding, dark one.
I go to see the cemetery myself sometime soon. I will of course publish my personal experience in as unbiased, coherent, non-fluff possible way. I’m usually neutral about these kinds of things, being both skeptic and believer at the same time. I don’t scare easy. That being said, If an unusual amount of cats gather about the place, I’ll use my humbly accumulated knowledge of folklore and mythology as a tool to know:
It’s time to be leaving.

years ago when we were in high school we visited Maltby Cemetary. It was a hot sunny day. Yes the cemetary was shady but that doesn’t explain the bone -deep cold I felt and could not not shake off for hours after. If you don’t have a very strong spirit, keep out of Maltby Cemetary.

The 13 steps of hell is mo longger there as someone has already said the steps have been bulldozed to keep kids out. I knew a kid that went there during highschool and he came back but he wasnt the same he was diagnosed with a mental issue he was fine before he went it messed him up. I believe these steps were real and haunted.

As far as the headstone with ‘Order of Pendo’ on it is concerned, there’s nothing Satanic or mystical about it. The ‘Order of Pendo’ was “a mutual benefit association, organized and existing under the laws of the state of California, with branches known as ‘lodges’ or ‘councils’ in the state of Washington…”
You can read about a Wash. State Supreme Court case from 1905 concerning the Order here:

I moved to Reintree in 1978 as a child. At the time there was no road between Reintree and Paradise Lake Road. Only dirtbike trails. My house was one of the closest to the cemetery until the mid 80’s. My parents still live there. My brother and our friends used to hang out at that cemetery all of the time. I mean daily! We would come in from the back side of the cemetery and not the dirt road because that dirt road was as scary as the cemetery. There was always wrecked cars off the side of the road and the exact death smell mentioned earlier. The steps where there and one of the things I remember about them is that they had moss on them allowing you to walk down, but making it very difficult to walk back up. We always thought that they were called the steps to hell. I remember getting chased away from the place by what we thought were the Doolittles that lived on the other side of Paradise Lake Road. We never did any harm to the place as we were always too scared. We did sneak up and watch a couple of weird things because we would come up undetected on our bicycles. We were really young and scared so we would just hide in the bushes. We witnessed a couple of wierd rituals, one involving a goats head and a bunch of people in robes. They got chased off by the police. The scariest was a couple of guys in black robes bleeding a cat into a 5 gallon bucket. They saw us and chased us as we ran screaming away to our parents who called the police and made us go back with the police to tell the story. While I am sure these were just some goth people, it sure was scary and spread quickly to Cottage Lake Elementary. Later when we were in Junior high at Leota and then at Woodinville highschool we would take newcomers down there all of the time. Everytime we would hear some weird noise or see something out of the corner of our eye that would certainly scare the **** out of you and make you beleive that this place was truely haunted.
Our visits there at night were pure terror and the hair on my neck stands up just thinking about them. It was always so dark and that smell and all of the sounds made us run away as fast as we could several times even before we got to the entrance of the cemetery. I will never forget those days of fun and terror combined.

I heard somewhere that the 13 steps were bulldozed over back in the late 80’s or early 90’s because of people that repeatedly showed up and vandilized the cemetery while looking for the steps. I also heard the area is closed off and its prohitibed to go in the cemetery because of teenagers that used go in there with shovels hoping to unearth the 13 steps. Another version of the story I heard is that people dont die when they go down the steps, but they see a vision of hell and are driven insane by it.

I used to visit the cemetary years ago while attending Bothell High school. We would gather there on every Friday the 13th and on Holloween. This was back around 1986-1988. Back then there was no haouses with in miles of the cemetary. Since then they have built houses right up to the cemetary. One time while I was there, at night of course, I saw a bright light near ground level. You could only see the light, not the light source. At the same time there were shadows passing by the light. Then as quick as it came, it just dimmed out. With in 5 minutes of this, everyones flashlights that were there, just dimmed out as if the batteries were drained of all the power. I would say there was about 15 of us there. We all took off out of there so fast some of us wrecked on the way down the hill(dirt road). I broke off all the teeth on the front sproket of my motorcycle tring to get out of there. VERY SCARY.

I’m planning on going up to check this cemetery sometime soon. I have already attempted to go up during the day, but I had some issues. When I got to the top of the trail, there was a big pile of yard clippings. Branches and things. I haven’t read anything about this at all, so I’m kind of wondering if maybe I went the wrong way? Has any one else run into this problem? We tried to hike through the forest to go around it, but it didn’t really look like we were getting anywhere, so we gave up…
