Not many people are aware of the Little White Church in Stanwood. It sits high above the river bank of the Stilly river all alone in the middle of the final resting place of the founding fathers of Stanwood. I myself have heard laughing and on several occasions witnessed with my friends a women dressed in early 1900′s clothing laying flowers on a grave. I have also heard a horse and wagon coming up the hill (which by the way you are not able to see the driveway due to it is blocked by the church it’s self. ) and of course nothing is there’. Dr. Pearson is buried here, He and his family owned the general store and Mr.Pearson practiced medicine in the family home which I might ad is worth checking out, it is downtown Stanwood and now is a museum and I believe the other Pearson Family members are still there. Both are worth checking out.

if anything brings back alots memorys used to party there in the 80 and the cars not starting was true then and yhe radio didnt want to work even though we were on top of a hill

Graduated from BHS and that was in 82′ that place completely creeped me out! I was talking to Marjean from Class of 81′ yesterday & chatted about the Cemetery. You drive up PLR and the fog is heavy, you turn right off onto the road up to the cemetary and there is a smell that is like an animal rotting. The car/truck in the tree was there. I know those steps were there because I went down them…let me rephrase that…I made it down about 5 and got the hell out! For those of you that have been up there me personally the vibes/atmosphere is NOT good. Everyone that went up there always had trouble with their cars…that is a fact. I personally do not ever want to go back up there again…something is not right with that place in any way shape or form. I used to live just off Maltby Rd. on the West Side and when you cross over the freeway it’s just not a good feeling!

I grew up just south of Maltby. We used to go to this cemetary and throw spodies there on Halloween. Definately scary, but no ghosts and no stairs to be had. too bad.
If you really want to see a scary place, go to the far end of Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. There is a table with many chairs deep in the woods there at the cemetary. Sit at the table. Within each chair are the entombed remains of the original founding family. It is very scary and you will not soon forget your experience there!

I’ve been to Maltby Cemetery a few times. The caretaker is a bit pissed off because of all the people sneaking in and out to party, desecrate and basically disrespect the dead. I can’t blame the guy for being so aggressive, since he probably has family there as well. I’ve talked to him before for about 20 minutes before, and not once was he happy, amenable, or friendly. He’s just simply a prick. Just steer clear of the guy if you feel you absolutely have to be there. Anyway, the cemetery has a lot of history and is beautiful in its own right. There are some oversized plots, small plots, and one that always intrigued me: of a child whos buried on the hill slope – upside down/backwards. I have never heard noises, seen spirits, or felt fear in any way there, nor have I seen 13 steps anywhere. This all makes for a good story, but it’s all just that. I’m not saying there’s nothing spiritually strange there, but I have yet to experience anything but peacefulness there. Please be respectful of the dead, and get permission first…OR be seriously ready to have the cops called on you, or simply just run from the crazy *** caretaker who will find some kin of weapon to take your *** out with Remember all the caretakers on Scooby Doo? Friends & I found the cemetary back in the early 90′s, never saw any signs of the steps however did get a very weird vibe, just seemed as spiritual place. After about 5-10 minutes we decided there wasnt anything to see nor couldnt find anything really haunting. We turned away from the cemeatary and started walking back down the over grown road we folled in and was confronted by an older man who had a cigarette in his mouth holding a shotgun. The man asked if we belonged here? We replied we were looking for a trail and got lost. The man replied you know where you are and you need to leave. We said sorry, thanks & etc, the man stood at the top of the grass knoll & stared, never said a word, we walked back to our vehicle to never return. This was my 4th time there but first time during the day and never thought at 3pm we’d find a a strange older male with a gun advising us to walk away. Honestly the craziest reality check I’ve ever had, true words. My advice, dont go there & respect the graves that are on site. the 13 steps are no longer and are most likely a tale but we’ll never know. Here’s one for you. I know of all of this firsthand. It is absolutely and completely factual.

During the 1986-1987 school year, students from Redmond High School, drawn by the many crazy local legends, drove out to Maltby Cemetery (during daylight hours) to take photos and gather information for an article for the school’s newspaper. They interviewed a man who lived on adjoining property. They also took several photos. One of the photos was of a particular headstone. This ended up being the photo printed on the front page (it was the lead story) of the Redmond High School newspaper. The gist of the article was that the many stories concerning the cemetery were nonsense, that there were no “thirteen steps to hell,” that it wasn’t a Satanic burial site, and so forth. The article was approved by the journalism class’s supervising teacher, Dr. Roger “Doc” Salisbury. It was printed in the usual monthly edition of the paper, circulated throughout Redmond High School. Up to that point, everything seemed perfectly normal.

However, within a few days (less than a week, if memory serves), Seattle TV news (KOMO, KING and/or KIRO, though I can’t remember whether more than one of them ran the story, or, if not, which ones did–but certainly one of them ran it, because I saw it with my own eyes) ran a story about a report of a grave being robbed at Maltby Cemetary. The TV segment included video footage of dug up grave. The remains had been removed. And here’s the kicker: it was THE GRAVE MARKED BY THE VERY HEADSTONE IN THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE RHS STUDENT NEWSPAPER. As anyone who has been there can confirm, while it isn’t a terribly big place, there are a considerable number of headstones and graves in Maltby Cemetery. The chances of someone randomly robbing the very grave photographed by the RHS students, within a few days of the article being printed, are just too absurd to believe. So what does it mean? It probably means that someone who was a Redmond High School student during the 86/87 school year (or maybe one of their friends or family members who saw the newspaper they took home from school) dug up the coffin and absconded with the human remains therein. But WHY?

These are facts that can all be confirmed. Step one, check the RHS school newspaper archives for the 86/87 school year. There were fewer than 10 issues that year, and the Maltby article was the lead story on the front page, so it won’t be hard to spot. Then, check the news archives for KOMO, KIRO and KING, for a period of a week or so following the publication date of the RHS paper containing the Maltby article. At least one of those stations ran the story.
