For the past 7 years I have lived up the street from these apartments, I have herd and seen some weird stuff… I was delivering papers there one night when I walked in the lobby and when I enterd no one was there, apoun dropping off the papers and leaving I saw a old man with a IV walking down the halls at a rather fast pace… There have been many more sightins even by some of the people that lived there that I know. However they just renovated it and I havent herd anything yet. It could bet that when they cleaned it up they put people to rest. Only time will tell…

There seems to be alot of haunted houses in Bremerton!! Years ago before my sister passed away, her and her husband were living in this house on “D” street, she had told me that years before, her husbands friend committed suicide in the dining area on Easter Sunday! I always felt a little uneasy there from the begining… I was staying there one night and woke up hearing this loud snoring, I thought it was my sister or her husband, a few seconds later my sister was in the bathroom I asked her if that was Brad snoring, she said no!! it was Willie doing this!! everytime I would stay there I would here weird things or just feel a chill! My sisters sons said that Willie would say “boo” to them and try to scare them!! LOL he was never a mean ghost, he would say things or make funny noises lol thank goodness

I used to live in the Chester Apartments, before I moved to Oregon. My mom would see an old guy going from her room into mine. My aunt seen an old guy walk out of the closed elevator doors. My mother also seen a woman with red hair and an old fashioned green dress. Hopefully, since they rebuilt the inside and everything, it will become ghostless.

Are there enough people in Bremerton to form a ghost group?

Haunted hospitals are allways scared me. But what i liked to know is why is this building hauntd? I mean, ghost haunt when they’re bodies are killed or something bad happened to them when they were still living, but so many in the same time? Scary..

I used to live in the chester apt. as well back in 1996.It was vary haunted.there was one night when i was standing in my kitchen cooking something, by the way my apt front door was in my kitchen, anyway i was cooking and it was 10 pm and i heard a little child just outside my door yelling “mommy wait up” I instintly looked out the window in my door and i saw nobody there.I have several other stories about that place but probably shouldn’t take up the space.

I live in chester manner…now know as Frank Choop Place.
I was sleep one night and got up to use the bathroom. Then came back to the living room…then I went over to my bed to “fluff” my pillow, then I laid down looked over to the window and to my suprise I thought I saw a “Ghost” I rubbed my eyes, In shock… thinking I was seeing thing’s I looked again and to my shock….IT REALLY WAS A GHOST!!!???!!!

I was in such shock that I ran into my mom’s room and jumped into her bed from the door at 3am waking her up…trying to get her up so she could see the “GHOST” too!!!

But before I left my bedroom I took one last look at the “GHOST” and it was a woman I could not see her head because it was still stuck inbetween the 3rd floor and the 2nd floor.(because she was coming down from the 3rd floor she was wearing a white night gown and she was kinda a faded whatish green color!!!!

Tell next time ur friend from Frank choop place Tiffany!

I have lived in Bremerton my hole life. Iv never lived in Chester tarries apartments but have ben there a lot! Chester tarries used to be Harrison navel hospital it was the first hospital ever in Bremerton so as you can imagine its extremely old. I believe its about six or seven storeys tall. When you enter the building it still looks just like an old hospital! Truly the only changes that were made is they turned the patent rooms in to tinny apartments!!!!! I never believed in ghosts Intel my best friend lived there. I have heard storeys about ghosts walking up and down the hallways and dispersing in to the elevators witch are to old to work by the way. I have seen things out of the corners of my eyes but I never payed attention.. my friend is a single mother of two children so I often babysat for her. things in her apartment would fall over and fly across the room for no reason but again I payed no attention. one night when I put her children to bed there was a man laying next to her daughter wearing nothing but a rob and it was only covering heâ??s top have!! He had no arms just bloody stumps heâ??s arms were on the other side of my friends daughter. I was so scared I couldnâ??t move, breath or blink finely my friend daughter screamed out of fright and the man disappeared. I grabbed the two kids and went to my house!! I told my friend the next day and she had admitted things like this had ben happening often but she didnâ??t want to tell me for fear I wouldnâ??t believe her. She didnâ??t have much money so she couldnâ??t just up and move. But one night a knife flew off the table and barley missed her five year old daughterâ??s head. Im not sure if the knife thing was a ghost are not but after that they lived with me until they could get another place to live! Often times ghosts donâ??t know there dead and if Chester tarries still looks like a hospital im sure these spirits think there still just simply in the hospital. Its very sad but extremely true!!!!! Most every one in Bremerton believes Chester terries is haunted even the religious people except they think its daemons. Its now ben completely ben renovated so well see what happens it should be torn down but for some reason no one can do it!!!!!!!!!!

I have never lived at the Chester apartments. My cousin however lives a few blocks away on 7th st. One late night last spring, she and her boyfriend were walking their dog down Chester. The building sits very close to the street, so when your standing on the sidewalk your eyelevel with the first floor rooms, and extremely close to them. She and her boyfriend were on the sidewalk while the dog had a potty break. My cousin glanced up and noticed the silhouette of a person standing in the darkness of the room just across the small lawn from them. She tried to focus her eyes, sure she was imagining what she was seeing. As she was standing there staring, Whatever it was started to become clearer. She realized it was coming closer to the window, as if it was totally aware of them standing there and wanted to check them out. Still in disbelief, she held her breath as it got closer then retreated back into the darkness. She grabbed her boyfriend and started pulling on the dog. As they walked toward 6th st. she turned to see whatever it was had again come close to the window. She described it as not really having any definetion, but just being darker than the darkness. I have long been fascinated by the Chester street apartments. Every Holloween my kids and I drive by it, and down the side alley. We watch the dark rooms for any sign of those, who aren’t sapposed to be there.

My sister and brother-in-law are moving to Bremerton in early 07′. I had visited the town in Oct. ,05′ for a few days. I have to admit, there are so many old wood homes, that I imagine a few must a past. I have to check out these apts. next time I’m in town. I actually may be moving there and I really like haunted buildings.(not to live in,of course) If anybody can give me some info, I’d be appreciative.

this is a real incident which happened at a friends farm.we were sitting in the front of the main door and we noticed a glowing image of a man walking near the poolside.we did not pay much attention to it.later we started hearing screams and thought somebody was drowning.we had asked a servant who was working there for a long time regarding the noises.he told us that it was a regular affair as once a watchman was totally drunk and he slipped into the well……

I have lived in the former Chester Manor, now none as the Frank Chop Place for about 5 months now. My daughter and I have seen a women in are appartment and felt the presence several times like a dogs hair would stand up on their back so would the hair on the back of my neck, then a sudden chill would go through you. there are times when my dog will sit in the middel of the room and growl at nothing and then bark and howel he would stand up and back away from whatever it was he saw.this happens quite offten. There are also noises we hear of children running up and down the halls gigeling they would run back and forth 4 times and then it would stop. You would look out the door and nothing was there.
There is a friend on the thrid floor that has a man that leans against the door to there bath room and just stares at them, and some times there is a face that comes through the wall.

Well… I like the rest of you are from Bremerton and I grew up in the 1500 block of 9th street (1 block from the Chester Manner Apts.) My friends and I used to sneak out of the house and go to the Apts. cause they had a pool table. While we there, we would do things that most kids do at that age, CAUSE MISCHIEF. We were on the very bottom floor one late night, about 1am or so, and there was this red door that was locked. It had a window, but you could’t see anything at all. Now keep in mind, we had no idea that this place was haunted. Anyways, a buddy of mine had a flashlight so we shined it through the window. THIS STLL CREEPS ME THE HELL OUT !! I saw a set of glowing eyes in the corner of the room, so I thought it was a cat, until the damn thing stood up and started floating towards the door. I FREAKED OUT!! My friends were asking me what the problem was, but I was speechless. When I got home, my grandmother was just comming home from work (she closed and gets home real late). I talked with my grandma about what I saw, and she then advised me I was looking into the old morge. She confirmed my story with some of her own about the place. Needless to say, I never went back there to cause MISCHIEF. I am very interested in ghost sightings and stories. I watch TAPS nearly every Wednesday, and wait for the opportunity to see them explore a place I have been. Now with all the re-model, Im not sure if the unknown is still there. Has anyone else had any encounters with the Chester morge?

Hi, my name is Jessica! I am what people call a paranormal psychic, which means I am able to comunicate with the dead. It isn’t something I blurt out, for I myself don’t like what I see sometimes. I am not sure why spirits are attracted to me, but they are for some odd reason. Since a very young age, I have talked and seen spirits. It still scares me to this day. I have dealt with a lot of problems dealing with spirits, way to many stories to tell! My mother can’t see them, but she can feel them. Infact she is extremely sensitive to spirits. My sister has seen a few spirits, and she feels them as well. However, it is me that the seem to be attracted to. For example… My father lost his father when he was 5 years old. He mother and father however divorced when he was 3, and his mother re-married! He lived with his mother, and wasn’t allowed to see is father, for his mother didn’t have nice things to say about him. My father was denied of even knowing his father was killed in an electrical accident when he was 5, and grew up being told his father didn’t love him or want anything to do with him. It wasn’t until he was 14 that he was told by his older brother that his father had been gone that entire time. Well, several years ago, my mother had started feeling him around our family, infact it was when I was 2 or 3 and I am now 22! Anyhow… Over the last 6 years I started seeing and hearing things. 2 years ago, I had seen and started talking to my grandfather. My father wasn’t a believer, and thought I was making things up. It wasn’t until his father, my grandfather told me things that my father hadn’t shared with me or anyone, including my own mother. I told my father, and he started believing. Things started happening when my dad was around, and it was my grandfather trying to get my father to notice and talk to him. So, of course I talked to him constantly, infact it is like he is really here, and acts and comunicates like nothing was up.
Anyhow… Everywhere I go, something is always happening to me, in which I see or talk to spirits. I have a very hard time entering old hospitals, or even hospitals in general, grave yards, it really is hard, for I see spirits everywhere. I have hard times being in old homes, for usually there is a spirit attached for some reason.
Anyhow… I live in Silverdale! If there is anything I can do to help, please contact me by e-mail at:
I will help in anyway I can!!!
Good Luck,
Jessica Writesel

I saw a female ghost at Central Kitsap High in the staff Parking lot. It was on December 11th during a basketball game between CK and Bremerton. The fire alarm went off during the game causing everyone to evacuate the gym. We were all shuffled out of the gym into the staff parking lot. I wandered out into the lot looking for a place to use the bathroom and at this point I saw this female ghost walking between some trees on a small hill adjacent to the road that leaves the parking lot and and exits out onto Anderson Hill Road. This is the first time in my life that this has ever happened to me. I am 48 years old.

i lived at chester manor (frankchopp place) about a year ago and the place still seems to be haunted even after the remodeling. i heard wierd noises in my apartment sometimes. i had a thing with always closing my bathroom door before i went to bed, because i dont like opened doors at night, and i would almost always wake up to the door being open. i think the strangest thing i have experienced though is that early one morning i was walkin to my apartment (about 4am) and i walked around the corner and could have sworn i seen someone run down the hall right through the wall.

My wife has been doing research on this location. Our researcher for our group has been doing some calls, from what we understand it is now a low income housing. It’s harder than hell to get in there because of the laws behind low income housing, rent control, and privacy laws.

I have been by the Chester apartments and known people who have lived there and every person who has lived there has stories. However I do not think that just because they are renovating it that the hauntings will stop. It is the land they are attached to not the structure itself, they will always remain there no matter how many times you build over it. The real question is why are there so many? It just seems like there would have been some bad stuff going on in the day when it was still in operation for there to be so many people that are tormented to not leave.

People wonder why the place is haunted, well if it helps, when my uncle was staying there during some time in the 70’s or 80’s he started to get extreamly ill, forgot the diagnosis, but he went down into the basement and was found dead a while later, that could be a cause.

My girlfriend and I just got back from visiting this apartment complex, although the address Mapquest gave us for the apartments is different. Mapquest gave us 515 Chester Ave in Bremerton, and when we drove there, we could not find a 515 on Chester Ave, and instead we found a 704 Chester Ave which looked exactly like an old hospital. I also read the hospital had 56 rooms for patients, and when we looked at the floor plan, this apartment complex had 57 rooms (they possibly added a room on). We went up the elevator and walked down the stairs to the basement and then we went back up the elevator. We are going back here soon…I just wanted to know if this is the right building, although I am quite sure of myself it is. 704 Chester Ave in Bremerton, WA – the apartment complex behing Olympic College.

Nate A says:

July 20, 2007, 6:07 am

Also, I was wondering if anyone has links or something to old pictures of the hospital before the rennovation, when it was still a running hospital? I’ve been looking everywhere on google and have not found any…

Nate A says:

July 21, 2007, 8:24 am

We went back to Chester Apartments (Now call Frank Chop Place, opened in 2005, they remodeled the place since the apartments used to be called Chestor Manor Apartments and it was run down and a bunch of drug dealers lived there at the time), located on Chester Ave in Bremerton, WA to find out if we can catch anything on video again. If you don’t know the history of these apartments, the apartment complex was used the first-ever Harrison Hospital in Bremerton, opened in 1911. Its a 4 story building with 56 rooms (now 57 rooms), an attic and a basement, and we found 2 places that were closed off to the public and were locked (those 2 being the doors to the attic which had the word “save” spray painted on the wall which it looked to be the old part of the hospital because the flooring and the stairs looked extremely OLD (we saw this because the door had a window in it you could peak through), and the other spot was the door on the other side of the apartment complex (another way to get to the attic apparently) which we found it has obscene writing on it, you’ll read about that below). The apartment rooms were old patient rooms, just imagine how many people passed away in that building and/or in the rooms people now live in!

Anyways, we recorded our 4th video exploring this chilling place (and you literally feel a prescence when you first walk into the building, I know I do everytime I walk in here). We found a door with markings on it that somebody wrote, that said, “**** you Spirits and *****. BB. 02/07/07,” which was really odd because Management had to of known of this graffiti writing since Feb 7, 2007, but they haven’t done anything about it to clean it up. About the 1 min 47 sec mark (about 3/4 of the video), when my camera was looking at a weird-shaped box on the wall:

Me: “I wonder what that is right there, that big box cut out.”
Her: “Ya”

…soon after that, you HEAR A LOUD SQUEEL SOUND AND A THUMP!

Notice, we did not HEAR this at the time we were shooting this video (if we did, trust me, we would of been FREAKING OUT) and this was not a result of my shoes because I was standing still the whole time (She can confirm this) until I started walking down the stairs, then you can hear my footsteps. Everytime I watch this part, I get the CHILLS…just to know something was there with us!

We didnt pick these sounds up until I uploaded the videos on my computer and she watched them at her house for the first time. She noticed the squeel and she called me asap to tell me! (I didn’t watch them yet because I was heating up some food in the kitchen). When she told me about this, I was like NO WAY and I had to check it out for myself. I rushed from out of the kitchen, went back on my computer, and started watching the video. About 3/4 of the way in after I said I wonder what that is right there, that big box cut out, I heard the squeel and started to freak the **** out, and my adrenilane has been rushing since then! I want to go back! We are going to go back to this very spot again soon to take more videos and pictures, hoping to get more!

We finally found something! And trust me, my adrenaline is GUSHING through my vains right now…

She even took a picture when my head was right by the door with the obscene markings and where we heard the squeel and loud thump in the video, and you can see a “perfect” white orb by me. I **** you not…

Everybody’s excellent grammar, capitalization, and punctuation really inspire me to take you all seriously. It doesn’t make you all look like the fifteen year olds that most of you are.
Now as to Chester Terrace, yes it was haunted. Whether it will continue to be now that they have completely torn down the building and re-built it remains to be seen. Possibly most will move on now that nothing exists that is familiar to them in their confused state.

these apartments are haunted, i was there a few months ago and if you go t the back of the building where the back entrance is there are some windows you can actually put your face up to and look into a dark room and you can actually feel the presence of a spirit right on the other side of the glass. its actually pretty cool, i dont think its very scary, but for some people it might be creepy to do that, try it if you dare!

I lived there 2 years ago when they just opened it back up after the remoldling and I would be all by myself late at night and I swear to god there was some ones face in the window staring at me. And all day long there would be a little girl running up and down the 3rd floor (were my apartment was) I would run to the door to see if she was there but nothin. again another day I was goin to the elevator and it was open noone around but it was open so I went in and waited nothin happened so I freaked out and ran down the stair then as soon as I was on the 2nd floor the elevator door opened in front of me and the basement is so quiet so still, the elevator door is right next to the morge I would NEVER go on the elevator by myself to the basement even though they took out all the drawrs that the bodys were in its still freaky, a big dark empty cement room and one time that door to the morge was wide open with no one in it with the light on!!!! IT REALLY IS HAUNTED!!

Glowing eyes? ..not so much.

Children running around in the building at all hours of the night? Definitely happened.

Chester Terrace was the cheapest place to live in Bremerton when I was growing up. It probably still is. Because of this, the majority of people who lived there were drug addicts. Tweakers and heroine addicts. Unfortunately I was friends with some of them. It was a place to get high, where no one cared what you did.
I have always heard that Chester Terrace is haunted, but I never saw anything to prove that. Not that I don’t believe it, but alot of it could be people so doped up that they hallucinated everything!
I kind of believe it, but I have never seen anything, nor have any of my friends who lived there ever said anything.

I live down the street from the Chester Apts. on 5th Street, next to the Catholic church. I believe my house is haunted by 3 ghosts. I have heard an evil sounding whisper in the basement, a normal whisper saying “mom” in the stairway leading up to my kids rooms, and my 4 year old son said that there is a little boy ghost in his playroom who has an evil face and who slapped my son on his hand. My son also said there is a bigger ghost who hangs around in his teen brother’s room. I have every reason to believe him as I don’t think he is able to fabricate a story like this on his own. Plus I know my son and I saw the fear in his eyes as he told me about this. He won’t go back in that room and we keep it closed in order to keep his mind more at ease. I have noticed that others have said that they live nearby the Chester Apartments and that they have ghost problems where they live. I wonder if this problem I am having at my house could be related to the hauntings at the Apartments?

Well bremerton isnt full of hicks, but kids that survived a meth induced pregnancy that obviously impaired grammer. But anyway. I dont believe in haunted houses (wait) because that would mean the house i grew up in would be the most haunted hot spot in bremerton. Me, my mom, cousins and friends experienced alot of scary incidents in that house, but not once did our experiences match. From someone walking behind me and seeing their shadow on the wall infront of me, but ofcourse no1 in the room with me, To poster or framed picture images turning their head in a different direction to hearing deep strained loud breathing in my closet and coat hangers going crazy, to my mom seeing people walk into rooms and them being empty and ice cold, and my friend having our basement door slam in her face when she was opening it. And there is nothing special about my house. It was built in the 30s, my parents bought it from the people who built it in the 80s and thats it. Except the fact that there are dozens of pets burried around and on the property, but ive never had an experience that seemed pet like, other than my terrier dog shaking uncontrollably when we heard the breathing in my closet. But i believe there arent ghosts, just demon intities taking form as “ghosts” to minipulate and scare us and possibly tempt us to using demonic measures to contact them like the oiji board and other sh** like that and the house im talking about is on Montgomery off 15th st. right below robs quick stop, as for chester apts..which i didnt know they changed the name to pork chop manor or whatever the hell its called…thats a dumb name. But i never had been to the apts because that was drug territory and still is for all i know. But if u want to experience something supernatural anywhere where u feel open and vulnerable will deliver that. Try the cemetary!

Does anyone know where Starvation Heights is located in Olalla? I would really like to check the place out.

I have enjoyed reading the comments here. Especially the ones about Bremertonians. lol. I was born but not at the old Hospital. Yes the town is full of rednecks but thats why we love the place. Who cares about spelling on the internet anyways, it silences voices and most lawyers and doctors I know cant spell. I cant spell and I graduated from UC Berkeley highest honors. I cant stand people who post stupid comments on the internet about spelling and grammar. Only ignorant and uneducated losers critique spelling on the internet.

I am very interested in getting a group together and going ghost hunting especially to Starvation Heights or Western State.

I have also heard that the Chester appts are haunted but then so are many places around here, especially around the military base PSNS.

The land that Starvation Heights took place in Olalla is actually a residents land, someone lives there. A group did an investigation of this place and had to get the owners permission to do it. Western State is a disappointment. They removed and cleaed up all the ruins, all thats left is two sets of stairs (see our website for pics at I’ve been to Chester numerous times and haven’t really experienced anything besides a loud squeek which I only caught on a video playback near the attic on the top of the stairs.

I lived in the Chester apartments in 1998-1999. I had lived on the first floor the last apartment all the way to the back, i looked out my peep hole and saw all the way to the end of hallway where the office was. Many nights I heared children laughing and running the halls after a month got use to the sound nothing bad happen at times the “children” would tap on my door and i imagine run off. After about the sixth month of being there I started feeling un easy at times and look back nothing there, i went to my very small bedroom ha ha and i heared knocking at my door it was louder then the tapping of my lil ghost kids so i got up looked out my peep hole saw only darkness so of course i thought it was my ex boyfriend Dan coming to bug me. I open the door and there was nothing but a musky dirt smell. figured someone playing a joke so went back to go to bed. I was dozing off to sleep when i heared faint screams from a woman and a man yelling, I didn’t know what it was of course i figured doestic violence so i called the cops ha ha lets just say they woke a lot of people on my floor for nothing and i’m sure the cops thought i was crazy but i swore I know I heared a couple fighting. Later I heared that a man that haunted there would go into different rooms (when he was alive) and he rapped and killed women there. now I don’t know if that story is true but I do know I heared screams and fighting. I also heared storys bout the 5th floor i only know that i felt i was being followed and i would run down the hall to the stairs and wouldn’t stop till i got to my floor. I also heared of a woman on the stairs i never saw her but felt something i do now personally that, Chester Terrace is and was haunted when i live there with more than enough ghosts to go around. I was never brave enough to go any where near the mortuary

Chester Terrace is haunted. My mother lived there for a short time in the 1980’s and I remember her bathroom door opening and closing on it’s own. In the 1980’s Chester Terrace was a haven for the poor, the drug addicted and criminals, which added to the complete feeling of despair, anger and sorrow one felt in that building. My mother’s apartment was one of the old operating rooms near the top of the building and you never felt alone there. The building will never be “right” and should just be torn down completely. The “soul” of that building is filled with angst and should be completely torn down.

G. says:

I live about a block and a half away from the Chester Apartments. I’ve known a couple of people who lived there, but no ever told me they’d had any spooky experiences there. The house I live in, on 11th St, is pretty old, and I have had some strange experiences here. Though I can’t say I’ve ever “seen” a ghost (and really don’t WANT to!), some “unexplainable” things have happened.

I personally think maybe people’s spirits hang around, when they die with “unresolved issues”, or when they feel they are still needed, for some reason. I think a lot of people have died, in ways that made them feel their death was unfair, avoidable, etc, and they just want someone to know their story, to know what really happened, to understand their tragedy, and relate to it. Even today, we hear a lot of stories of people who died in hospitals, because of neglect, abuse, malpractice, etc. I imagine in past times, (when there was far less legal oversight), these sorts of things happened A LOT MORE. And maybe that’s why a lot of spirits still hover around the Chester Apts., they just want someone to identify with them, and remember and know the TRUE story of what happened to them? (because to this day, maybe no one does know what REALLY happened, and the “official story” may simply be a cover up?) I think often their intention isn’t so much to frighten us, but just to make us aware of them, because they want someone to KNOW what happened to them, that’s all.

I think too, because of Bremerton being a long time military town, there is a lot of “violent karma’ here. Because of association with the military, a lot of people either have been, or are involved in very violent acts of torture/killing, etc… And after having done those sorts of things, while in military service, they become more violent people, in general, and when they return to civil society, they often end up committing other acts of violence, as well. (and the military has a history of often covering up for “their own”) So you’ve got a lot of people who are perhaps lacking in scruples, or who are more inclined to violence, than someone who is not coming from a military environment and background. So there is a lot more violence here, in general. Not meaning to be offensive, but that’s just how it is. Plus, a lot of people who simply died young, due to service in the military. Probably many suicides too, of people who lost someone they loved, as a result of the person being killed, while in military action. (It is pretty darn tragic that 18-19 year old KIDS are being sent off to fight and die. And not always for the right reasons…)

I think the military also brings in a lot of “corruption” in the form of certain “supporting services” that always seem to follow the military around. Such as prostitution, higher levels of alcohol and drug abuse, (sailors coming into port, always want to party it up, get wasted, get laid, get into fights, etc) You’re also going to have a higher incidence of rapes, and women being abandoned. (which probably leads to higher local rates of suicide, amongst women, as well as abortions, and/or murders of “illegitimate” children, and/or deaths of children who were abandoned/neglected) Of course, the local authorities have some motivation to cover a lot of this up, in an attempt to protect the reputation of the military, and the town….

I don’t doubt A LOT of bad things have gone on in this little town, and they still DO go on here, because of this ONE influence. There is a very high rate of murders, and crime, and corruption, here in Bremerton, even today, despite the fact that it is a relatively small town. Even though they try to bring in new buildings, and do things to beautify and clean the place up, they can’t seem to alter the underlying “seedy” and depressing nature of the place!(because they’re not addressing the “root causes”)

Then you also have the the history of all the conflicts that have gone on, in earlier times, between the white settlers, and the local native population… (a lot of “unresolved issues” there, too) Basically, that’s going to be a history of genocide, and murder, and theft, without conscience, in many cases….

When I was living over on Bloomington Ave., I had a strange dream of an “old time woman”, (looked like someone out of the 1800’s) who died in a kind of mysterious way. I’ve always wondered if this dream was about some “historic person” from this area. In the dream, I saw her and a few other people, laying dead in a complex of houses, that seemed to be out in the middle of nowhere, and it was very cold and icy, and one thing that stood out in the dream, is that when I came into the house and saw her, she appeared to have been frozen all winter, and it seemed like I came in, in the spring, when the bodies were just beginning to thaw, and I noticed that while her body was mostly all intact (and didn’t appear to be injured – none of them appeared to be injured), her nose was gone! (my thought was, it had decomposed, as a result of being frozen, and then thawing). She was wearing the very proper clothes, that women of the 1800’s would have worn. (long puffy skirt, tight corset, etc) Had blond hair all done up in an old fashioned bun, and I had a sense that she was possibly a “missionary” of some sort, and she was very young, no older than 30.

The image of that dream stayed with me a long time. I felt maybe I was getting some “message” from her spirit. I think she was someone who was trying to bring some “values” to the region, and maybe she was a first settler, but she died young and tragically somehow, and failed in her mission.

Does anyone know who this person might have been?

There were major epedemics that swept through Kitsap County back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s that claimed entire families. My first impression when I read about your dream is maybe what you were seeing was a make shift, built in haste sanitorium for the sick and dying. I would research this and also check the library out for a book on Washington cemetaries and burial plots. Another interesting fact about Bremerton is that when it was becoming established it was full of saloons and whore house’s down town.I’m sure with that kind of action and past that there are some good ghost stories and I’m sure there had to be missionaries.

On Feb. 13, 1965, the $3.1 million, 150-bed Harrison Memorial Hospital opened in East Bremerton. The improvements over previous facilities had an immediate impact, recording 40,885 days of patient care â?? 3,123 more than at the old Harrison Hospital the previous year â?? and treating an average of 112 patients a day, an increase of nine over 1964.

The new hospital, which remains Kitsap County’s only full-service emergency and long-term care facility, was actually the third hospital named after the county’s most munificent medical benefactors, Benjamin F. and Angie Harrison.

The first Harrison Hospital at Seventh and Chester streets in Bremerton served as the county’s only general hospital from 1912 to 1916 and from 1918 to World War II. The hospital, originally the shipyard’s first hospital and called “Building 89,” was purchased by G.B. Poindexter and moved in two sections into Bremerton.

On Sept. 12, 1912, as it was preparing to open, Bremerton City Hospital was heralded by The Bremerton News as “a modern hospital building possessed by few cities the size of Bremerton.” Four years later, on April 25, 1916, the hospital, “contaminated with the pox” and mired in $4,000 debt, closed.

Over the next two years, a hospital board was founded and residents were invited to become stockholders at $1 a share. By 1918, the board had generated enough money to reopen the hospital Oct. 16, this time as a public, nonprofit entity called City General Hospital. The Spanish Flu epidemic prompted the hospital to open eight days earlier than planned.

During the 1918-20 Spanish Flu outbreak here, Angie Harrison served as a volunteer in an emergency hospital operated in October and November 1918 at the Methodist Church. From this point, the Harrisons were the chief boosters and benefactors of the area’s medical community.

City Hospital was renamed Olympic Hospital in 1931 and, in the late 1940s, the name was changed to Harrison Memorial Hospital.

During World War II, the Federal Public Works agency built Franklin D. Roosevelt Hospital for $5 million in West Bremerton to provide additional medical care for the county’s booming population.

In 1947, FDR Hospital was purchased for $185,000 by the Kitsap County Hospital Foundation Inc., which was founded in November 1946. The foundation outbid a rival group, the Kitsap Cooperative Hospital Association.

In 1948, FDR Hospital was renamed Puget Sound Hospital and, in August 1956, it merged operations with Harrison Hospital.

The older facility operated as Harrison Nursing Home for 20 years. In 1976, the former hospital was purchased by Joseph Mentor, who renovated the building and reopened it as the Chester Manor Apartments, which remain occupied in that capacity to this day.

On Jan. 9, 1957, The Sun reported that the Kitsap County Hospital Foundation had agreed to rename Puget Sound Hospital to Harrison Memorial Hospital, after Angie Harrison made the hospital the principal beneficiary of her estate.

When the third Harrison Hospital opened in February 1965 in East Bremerton, the second Harrison Hospital in West Bremerton was sold to the state. On Aug. 3, 1965, it reopened as the Olympic Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation. It is now called the Frances Haddon Center.

My wife and I are trying to convince the manager to let us do a formal investigation, under supervision of course, of Frank Chop Place Apartments. We left a voicemail a couple of days ago but have yet to hear back from the manager. If she does not allow an investigation, we at least hope we can have a guided tour visiting the attic and basement. It would be interesting to see if original hospital remains still stand. The morgue would be an interesting place to roam as well…we will post back if we do end up getting permission. Stay tuned…

Ms or Mr Duvo?
I know the very neihborhood that you are speaking of.
Is it the one with the ball feild across the road?
When I was about 7, my family was ran out of there.
From what the newspapers and my parents and the police said, that it is a highly active area, due to the satanic rituals that were performed there.
There were 8 people that died on that block, and three were suicidal that “donated” themselves to human sacrifice.
When I was little , I saw these things.
I do not know what house that you are living in, but you need to grab whomever you are living with, and get the hell out of there.
I recall stepping down those stairs and feeling dread and fear, so I moved out at 17.
After seeing and hearing that thing, I had enough.
I remember seeing people in my bedroom upstairs, and how they laughed at me when I was scared.

Listen, if you see or hear any of this, get out! There are also unmarked graves of two dead teens, and a 4 mos old.
If you have children, keep them away.
The oldest ghost is of a hound from hell.
Good luck!

This is more about my adventures regarding a long night of web surfing. I had come across two of the people on this board from looking around on various places. It’s really interesting to get such a tight-knit feel to a place I’ve lived all my life, yet not even know people. Actually, maybe that’s borderline creepy. But it was just odd when you’d enter the building it has a lobby then long stretches of narrow hallways dimmly lit with a scungey orange glow very unsettling but even since a child everyone Ive ever had conversations with all agree that it is haunted Ive heard so many personal experiences and second hand incounters its hard to disbelieve everyone and Im a hard pressed skeptic but the evidence is just to overwhelming.

My brother and sister lived for a couple years in the late 80s in a little house right below Chester Manor on Broadway. There was actually a gate through their back fence that went right into the parking lot of the apartment building. While I am sure that the general creepiness of the building and quality of residents at the time added to the haunted quality, my brother’s family experienced several strange things while living there. My niece actually had a friend that lived in the apartments and she was constantly talking about children running around at night and screaming (could be druggies, I suppose). They often saw lights in the attic level of the building at night, which was supposedly not accessible. There were also rumors about the former basement morgue, including weird noises and ghostly sightings. I am also a 4th generation Kitsap County resident and have heard stories about the haunted apartment building/hospital all my life, so these are long standing tales.

Prior to the advent of pre-hospital care any emergency treatment of the sick or injured was deferred until arrival at a community hospital. Originally, the hospital building was the shipyard’s first hospital and called “Building 89.” It was purchased by C.B. Poindexter and moved in two sections into Bremerton. The hospital functioned for only four years and closed on April 25, 1916. The hospital reopened as “City General Hospital” on October 16, 1918 in response to the Spanish Flu epidemic. My guess is the way the people died in that hospital, many too early due to flu…just a tidbit of info here:
Washington’s Past – 1918

Opening Remarks Prepared for Delivery by the Honorable Alex Azar
Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services for April 14, 2006…

On September 27th, 1918, Washington officials first reported the presence of influenza, saying that “a number of cases have been reported in the vicinity of American Lake.” This official report came ten days after the pandemic actually appeared in the state, when recruits from Philadelphia arrived at the Puget Sound Naval Yardâ??eleven of the recruits were ill with the flu. On September 23rd, 10,000 people gathered to witness a review of Washington’s National Guard Infantry. Though the camp’s medical officer acknowledged there was a minor epidemic underway, he insisted there was nothing to worry about. His miscalculation helped enable the flu to spread. By the 25th, influenza was epidemic in Seattle. By October 11th, Washington officials reported that “schools have been closed and public gathering prohibited at Seattle, Bremerton, Pasco, Prosser, Sultan, and Port Angeles. On October 7, it was estimated that there were 1,000 cases of influenza at Bremerton.” Many of the schools that were closed didn’t open until January or March 1919. By October 18th, it was concluded that “the disease is epidemic at Seattle and Spokane.” And, over that week, “7,349 cases were reported.” The following week, 5,322 cases were reported. On October 29th, Seattle made wearing masks mandatory, and the rest of the state followed suit the next day. In Seattle, the old City Hall and one of the dormitories at the University of Washington became emergency hospitals. Public gatherings were banned, even church attendance. In response to complaints from ministers, the mayor said, “Religion which won’t keep for two weeks, is not worth having.”When it comes to pandemics, there is no rational basis to believe that the early years of the 21st century will be different than the past. If a pandemic strikes again, it will strike in Washington.

I didn’t realy think much about it, because i worked at the Pike Place Market for years. An had seen plenty there. one day all of us were standing behind the counter, a dust pan was on top of a water heater. It flew off the top, on to the floor. It was loud. We all looked at eachother. An said well yes, she’s definately with us once again. We have long since closed that shop, and some other owners have moved in. They have child. The child has connected with the ghost, an has actually spoke with it. what the child has told another worker at our design center, that is located behind the store. What they were talking about, an such. It’s been confirmed, because our what the little girl knew, an one other with in flowers to go. No one else knew. The ghost is prtecting someone else there, an that is why she still lingers. That whole area use to be old indian battle ground, An alot of horrible things have taken place there in history. Onto my comment: The first hospital was actually the Naval Hospital (not the one currently in use) on PSNS. It was founded March 9, 1903. When the original building became too small to continue operations (not actual operations, but as in… usages.) they built a new building. They finished construction on January 27, 1911. That building was later moved in sections to it’s current place on Chester. I believe it was still being used as a working hospital until the late ’50s.

I’ve lived in Bremerton most of my life and I have noticed like many other people that there seems to be alot of houses in this city that are haunted. I recall a few odd things that occured in a house my friend moved into last year. He’d just left to go visit family and about 30min after he left I was sitting in his room watching TV when I heard someone cough in the living room even though no one was there. I even got up to see if anyone was still there and didn’t find anyone. It was crystal clear, it wasn’t muffled or anything so I knew it wasn’t from outside. I’ve also seen the computer turn on by itself in the middle of the night and I’ve also seen shadow figures walking in the hallway. Even having one appear in a room with me and two other people who all saw it.

Ok now I know im not a freak lol. My friend and I have been to Chester Terrace numerous times cuz we had friends living there back in High School this was around 1996-1998. One of my friends lived on the bottom floor and when he turned off the lights you would see a guys head popping out of the bathroom door looking at you it was the freakiest thing. One time my best friend and I were there at night on the top floor and we both saw a man with no arms and no leggs hobbling down the hallway and it looked like he had gangreen on his leggs. In the back of the building there is a stairwell in this stairwell you get a very cold negative almost demonic feeling. Dont know if the building is still haunted but do now that after it was Harrison Hospital it was turned into a retirement home and then into apartments and then newly renovated for apartments again. Happy Ghost Hunting!!!!!!

Hello all. My wife and I run a group in the Bremerton area called Washington State Paranormal Society. Anyways, we would love to do a formal investigation of these apartments but the manager seems to dislike paranormal groups. Hopefully we can talk to the manager and work something out. Feel free to check out our website by clicking the link in my name and stay tuned for more info.

I am moving down the street from these apartments into a house made in 1911 I am looking forward to see if this house is haunted. Apparently there is a house close to the ball field that is haunted, so much to the point that a young woman and her infant left their lease 2 months early for no stated reasoning other then they felt ‘unsettled’ if anyone has any info on ghost sightings anywhere near there or on broadway ave homes. Please let me know.

I was of the three construction workers working late doing the interior steel framing in chester mannors most recent romodel. This remodel was the best experience ive ever had when it comes to dealing with the peranormal. Our company was there from start to finish and always the last ones off the work sight. When it got close to dark that is when things started to happen. Whispers in your ear, shadows fallowing you, a woman in a white dress like gown, a little girl i spotted fallowing you from about 10 feel, loud thuds ,and running up and down stairs it the attick. I have plenty to tell if you have and questions. Mind you all the stories you hear are probably true.

14yrs ago, i was staying at the top floor, chester terrace. after closing my eyes to pass out, i opened them suddenely to see a doctor ripping me from my bed. I was numb when i was thrown on the gurney, i was travelling along a spiral ramp going deeper into hell. as i went farther the walls started to change, roots started growing out of the walls as i hit the bottom floor. As i reached the bottom i felt rage and anger and as suddenlly as it it started it stopped and i was laying in my bed

Tammy wanted me to to take out at the trash. as i looked down i got a weird feeling like i wasnt safe. a couple of nights later i was waiting next to the access door to the garage when i felt a cold sensation running down back. i heard my friend coming up the stairs when something passed by me, i looked down the hall but there was nothing

My husband grew up in Bremerton. He said that when he was a teen, he and some of his friends went to Chester Apts. They brought along a Ouiji Board (Sp?) He said they got alot of action on that board, and they all ran out, scared! He will not go back there still to this day. WEll, of course, my daughter and I are now so interested in it after reading all the posts on here, so we drove past it on 09/21/2009 around 5 pm. We went around back and she hopped out of the car and took a brief look in on of the back windows that are blacked out on the south east side. All she noticed was a bunch of construction materials. We hope to drive by again and take a look inside. I thought it would be fun to go there on Holloween and trick or treat door to door. If I see or hear anything, I will update.

i am very sensitive to the presents of its very strange i never heard or had seen anything there.but have in other places.

Maybe you all need to be brushing up on your writing and go back to school ( I go to olympic college) and stop worrying bout hainted hospitals and the projects full of roaches and meth and crack headded welfare moms. I stay over at the cottage bay now and its real nice and i aint afraid to bring nobody home cuz its real nice maybe thats what you ppl should do is get they familys out of that place and go somewheres nice and not have to be worrying wit all dat.

My wife and I lived there (Chester Terrace) several years back, and I can assure you that the hauntings are very real. The little girl, or “peek-a-boo ghost” and the “Trenchcoat ghost” are the two most prominant phantasms in the building. Those who doubt the existance of ghosts need only spend one night in Chester Terrace Apartments and they will become believers.

To Classy Ms. Jackquee, You are so grossly misinformed that it is pathetic. Who are you to call anyone a liar just because you do not believe in the here-after. I am a minister, and have personally witnissed these activities. I am telling you now. They are real. And as far as Chester being a #@%$hole, perhaps you didn’t notice the huge rennovation project that fixed the building. Don’t attack us because of your ignorance.

Rev. J.A. Otto Sr. says:

May 26, 2010, 2:00 am

First off, I am not black so quit calling me that, secondly, it has been my experience that those who accuse people of being a pedophile, usually are themselves, and thirdly Paranormal activity is not satanic, Angels fall in that catagory as well. You want to slander someone then perhaps you need to lay off the meth, clean up your life, and move on. If you do not believe in this, then you have no business being on this site. I am not a fake Preacher,I am a Minister of God, ordained by the Church to teach His Gospel. The fact that you are being beligerent and out-and-out disrespectful leads me to believe that you need real psychiatric help. The Moderator of this website seriously needs to block you because in just the last two postings, you have violated every rule that has been set in place to protect those who believe against ignorant non-believers like you. Grow up. Or at the least, behave as your name implies, with a little class. You claim to have an education, you have even said in previous postings that we (meaning those who believe in ghosts) need to go back to school. Since you your self have zero education that can be spoken of, perhaps you are the one who needs to go back to school. You claim that I have cussed. When? Where? Is it not a common christian belief that Christ himself appeared as a Spirit before he returned to us in body? Before you attack people for what they believe in, do your homework. Oh and by the way, What maks you think that because a priest is a man/woman of God they don’t cuss. They have the worst sailor mouths out of everyone. GROW UP PUH LEEZE

Rev. J. A. Otto Sr says:

May 26, 2010, 2:08 am

Someone report this person as she has clearly violated the rules of conduct on this site. Oh and for your information, only pedophiles lay false claims to get the police off of their trails. You better be careful as to who you accuse. I am a man of God, and as such, I hold your soul in the palm of my hands. The last thing you want to do is accuse a Minister falsely of molesting children. Tha can bring a whole bunch of LEGAL PROSECUTION down on you. Do you know what LEGAL PROSECUTION means? Here let me spell it out for you. I can sue you for everything you own and not only am I protected by the Law, bt I am Protected by God. So before you attack anyone else, or accuse anyoe else, take a couple more hits of that meth you are smoking and GROW UP

Jason Laselle;

I haven’t been back on here for a while, been busy MOVING. Yes, we finally got out of the house in West Bremerton on 5th Street. We now live in Olalla, and there are no strange happenings here. The house on 5th Street still sits empty. Been up for rent for almost 4 months now. After I posted about my experiences there, it got pretty uneventful and quiet. My deeply troubled teenage son moved out a year and a half ago so maybe that had something to do with it. I think that maybe the spirits were feeding off of his negative energy. He was the one person who felt the most activity, especially in his room and in the basement; I was close second when I heard voices in my ear while cleaning out boxes in the basement. Every time I went down there after that, I felt a sense of panic and would always feel the need to make a mad dash up the stairs, humming or talking to myself in order to drown out any “voices” I may suddenly hear. What sucked was having to do my laundry down there! Our new place is a manufactured home. No ghosts here and my laundry room is just off the kitchen! Happy me!!

I know EXACTLY where this is. I live on Elizabeth Ave.I have a friend that lives on this street, her name is Holly. I have not heard of these stories, nor seen these apartments. But I have seen a woman, about in her middle ages, wearing a hospital gown. She was in my bedroom on my sister’s bed. she looked as if she was real, but asleep. My house was built in it’s 1920’s. Before me, There was a lady that had about 20 cats and my cat Deuce randomly meows at the walls. He was one of the survivors of the woman, and is it weird that i’m the only one he likes? He just hisses and bats and bites everyone else.

Bobbi says:

I used to live there in 1992, I can tell you it is very haunted, on the outer lower levels was the morgue some apartments still had the slats and used those for storage, the main level (entrance) was the admitting floor, I had rented a studio at that time on that level and trust me there was haunting on a daily basis, kinda freaky to hear a lady crying in the hall way and look out to see her but thru her. I then moved into the very large one bedroom on second floor in which it was the operating room, still had all the piping on the ceiling and my bathroom sink was an original wash sink. I used to know people that lived on the 3rd floor which was the insane asylum, trust me no matter what mood ( mad or sad) once you got to that floor your whole deminor completely changed to happy go lucky. I did get the chance to go into the attic, which was used to contain the more severe lunatics, I saw old beds and wheelchairs, it was creepy, you could look out the window and see downtown Bremerton ( but from the outside you couldn’t see that window) the elevator was also very much haunted, people had died in it, my cat would growl and raise its hair everything you took it by that thing. So yes this place is haunted and if you know where to go you can and will hear-see-and feel all kinds of spirits.

Steve says:

June 16, 2013, 9:01 pm

A few of my family was born there including my Mom. Also a few of my family has died there as well in the early 70’s. I can still smell the antiseptic odor of a mix of Lysol and ammonia. The pale green walls, the slower than slow elevators, geriatric patients with IV’s in wheelchairs waiting at the entrance. The general dilapidated green chairs and couches in the waiting room and scurrying nurses and aides wandering about. When I visited my grandparents there I was always creeped out and uneasy. I was in my early teens in the early 70’s. I always felt uneasy there. It really felt like the 1920’s in that place. It was Horton Home when I visited. I later heard about the history a few years later. I believe it holds some very dark things there and some very sad souls. I won’t even drive by it now and I don’t even live in Bremerton. There was a TV special years ago by a parapsychology group that did a bit on this. I think it was in the 80’s? Great read anyway.

In the mid 80’s, the USS Ranger was dry docked in the shipyard there in Bremerton for a 13 month overhaul. Many of us gay sailors from the Ranger rented apartments on the top floor of Chester Terrace Apartments. It was a past it’s prime, repurposed hospital with extremely wide hallways and weirdly laid out apartments. We were a wild bunch. Anyway, one strange night we broke into the basement and found discarded medical equipment of all kinds, including autopsy tables with water faucets and drains and coolers for the dead. The whole building had a vibe you touch in the air and hear in the walls. It looks like someone has dressed the place up but I bet it still has a dark heart.

Todd says:

July 13, 2016, 5:11 pm

I was in Bremerton from Nov of 1980 to Feb 81 apart of the crew of the Uss Enterprise there in the ship yards. About 6 or more of my shipmates and myself took up residence in these apartments before they were actually coverted. Can’t remember which one of us found this place but nevertheless It was very cheep since we were just renting unremodeled patient rooms. We loved the place because we could have wild parties every night. (i think at the time we were the only residents) Just as some has mentioned the place was littered with old hospital gear… Beds, wheel chairs, operating tables ect….. We would have wheelchair and bed races in the wide hallways…. Did alot of drinking, smoking, and trips on lsd or mushrooms in this place back in the day…. One of our favorite things to do is get local girls over and take them to the morgue in the basement and tell them ghost stories to scare the hell out of them then take them back to our rooms to party. Never saw any real ghosts just ones we made up to get lied.In fact I think my old shipmates and I can take credit for the start of this Urban legend… I agree with some of the others on here that say the sitings are more a product of drug induced imaginations.
