Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Civil War Romance

Jessamine County, Kentucky

This home in central Kentucky was given to a young couple as a wedding gift about 140 years ago. When the groom was called away to serve in the Civil War, his bride told him she would not leave the window until he returned. When the soldier arrived home a few years later, he was told that his wife had become ill and died in her sleep. He closed the window and died in the same room of a broken heart. Today, the shutters of that window cannot be opened. The ghosts are also said to cause many traffic accidents in the area.

This house sounds like one near me and I think that there should be a picture of this house so that I can tell if it is or not.

I read this story and I know of the house and i agree with andy that it is at the 3way stop. I pass by it every weekend and that window has been that way for as far back as I can remeber, and I dont ever want to go by it and see its open either.

I was wondering if anybody knew the history of the house across from the B.P. in Garrad County. My mother lives within a mile of this house but I was raised in Central Ky at Midway and I have no knowledge of the house. I do remember that some time back it had some sort of false front or something added to it in brick. If my memory serves me correctly it used to have a frame front rather than brick. I have heard a couple of tales about this house and seeing a face in the window and several other stories. Does anyone have more information.

I too live in this area of Ky and have heard several stories about this house. I had heard someone hung themself in that front room and a dangling body could be seen through the window. Also had heard a child died there in a fire and was known to look out the window and spook drivers into causing accidents. I think probably that the most likely conclusion is that headlights shining into the windows at night are a nuisance to the occupants of the home. In regards to remodeling yes the house has been changed to brick it was not always that way. I live in Danville so that is the road we have always traveled to get to Lexington and so forth and that house to the best of my memory used to be white, lacked the chandelier on the front porch but the window has always been shuttered. I too wonder why. Happy Hunting!!

The house # is 9272 (or perhaps 7292). I go to Centre College in Danville, and have heard stories about the house for 8 years (as I’ve had two brothers attend Centre College over those years). A few friends and I have speculated as to the nature of the closed shutters on the first floor, and many of us feel that they are closed due to light either comeing into the house and disturbing the owners (as it is probably a bedroom), or light reflecting back into the eyes of drivier’s eyes…It appears that there is plywood behind the shutters, as the shutters do not entirely cover the window where they meet in the middle…also note that the house is slightly catycornered to the road, and this minor angle may create a dangerous situation with light reflection that would otherwise not occur…Regardless, I do believe that somethign very odd is going on or occuring that is directly responsible for the closing of the shutters (that is, they are obviously closed for a good reason…

if that’s the same house I’m thinking of then there’s more than one story there. I’ve been in there along time ago, when some friends of mine lived there. we were sitting around late one night and the owners were telling us about all the scarry stuff they had seen and heard and all of a sudden the door upstairs slammed shut. the thing is that everyone that was in the house were all in that one room. all except their 2 year old daughter who was asleep in the next room. oh yea! one more thing… the room were the window is closed, there’s blood on the floor, and they’ve scrubbed it up time and time again but every time it rains the blood comes back. true story…i swear.

I’m a native of Danville and know this house. After the Civil War battle of Perryville several wounded soliders were housed here, Camp **** Robinson being nearby. It was an old white frame house for several years until somebody spent mucho money to make this into a brick house several yrs ago. A couple yrs back someone did hit the house causing structural damage to the house, But keep in mind this is a busy intersection. From what I can gather, impatients and demon drink were factors to the accident. No one died. I have asked local ghosthunters about this house and the comment was the haunting was a rumor. I always heard it was haunted by soliders

Destiny says:

June 7, 2006, 9:13 pm

I don’t know why they would cause other people to have car accidents. I mean if they were so much in love, they should know how it feels to lose some one you love so much,so why would they want to make other people hurt so much. i do believe about they shutters not opening, though.

July 24, 2006, 12:27 am

i live in portland tn and i believe this story cuz its right in front of my friend alicias house and me and her look at the window and if u look closley u can see 2 eyes glowing in the window and hear screaming from that house at night its #9272 yea…and by the way we rolled it on halloween

This house is not located in Jessamine County. It’s in Garrad County. There is a Shell or BP gas station across the street from it next to a traffic light. I’ve heard that when the people who live there left the shutters open, that people would crash into that corner of the house. Something about seeing something in the window. Not sure if true or not. But it’s definitely in Garrad County.

Kat says:

September 29, 2006, 8:36 pm

I know this house as well. The story I heard was a mother saw her six year old son run down by a car when he exited the school bus. The people who own the BP across the street live there.

They may have the answer. But, then again…they may like the mystery!

Melissa says:

October 8, 2006, 10:15 pm

I know the people that live there and they have never heard or seen anything abnormal. The shutters are closed b/c there is a staircase in front of that window. I’ve been in that house myself and it is a beautiful christian home.

Justin says:

October 9, 2006, 8:45 pm

I grew up in Danville and my parents have always told me that the shudders remain closed because there is a stairwell blocking part of the window so the owners shut them from preventing the passer by of seeing the ugliness of the addition.

Molly says:

October 12, 2006, 2:54 pm

I used to live in the house all of you are speaking of. I can tell you what the owner’s told me and what I experienced. I was told upon purchasing the house that is was haunted. By a handful of spirits. One a girl. The other weren’t clear they were adults, but the girl makes herself clear. I have seen her many times and she is a prankster. There is one that is violent. I am assuming a male. The window is boarded up because a Mother witnessed her daughter being ran over while crossing the road. But the weird thing was that it was boarded up before then and the Mother was told to never reveal the window nor open the shutters. She didn’t listen. I am not completely sure about the reason the windows were boarded but when I tried to remove the sheet of wood over the window, I was pushed away by something that was not visible. I never had a blood stain in the floor, but there is a spot in the room where you can sit an object and it is violently slid to the oposite side of the room. There is a constant odor. There is a hand print next to the window that is permanently imbedded in the wall. No matter what, it comes back. There is a rock, or used to be, in the front yard by the road that emersed blood from itself on several occassions. Those are just a few events that I have experienced. My husband was chased out of the house and threatened on several occassions so we sold the house.

I remember that there was a house in Australia near the salvation army centre legend has it that it was built in the civil war time and a man went to war and his wife stayed at her home . The wife waited for a long time but the husband never came back but she waited and died alone by leukimia and never knew what happened to her husband, her body still lies in the house and her body will become zombie when anyone enters and when they go in they never came out. I think your story will be rated 10 if you made a movie it will definatly be an R rated movie for me that is .

The house at the three way in Garrard County was a hotel and was also used as a hospital in the war I think. The shutter stays closed because in slave days that house was part of the underground railroad. They would sneak the slaves in through that window and down a stairway. I also know that some where behind that house is a mass grave of soilders from the war.

Kelly says:

September 15, 2007, 10:39 am

I would advise people not to go looking for this house! It’s a private residence and I doubt the owners are just going to let you in. That shutter has been closed for a long time and has NO paranormal story behind it what so ever. You’d be smart just to forget about this one!

i grew up around here. i can remember when the house was run down and had old wood siding. Looked like something straight out of a horror movie. The truth is, the house was renovated with brick siding. Complete 180. its a beautiful house now. there is not a paranormal story behind the window. there is a staircase that runs along the window so you cannot hang curtains there. its really unattractive so they keep the shutters closed. if they filled the window in with brick rather than close the shutters, the house wouldnt be symmetrical. sorry, no monsters.

i’ve heard the stories about this house too. there probably is some truth to some of them. i’m sure garrard co. has many haunted houses and i believe i own one of them. we lived in it for awhile and i saw a man twice. we built another house and rented this one out not telling anyone of my “sightings”. i would say at least 8 out of 10 renters reported to me the house was haunted…either seeing a man, hearing someone speak loudly, dresser handles clanging, gettin hair pulled, the smell of perfume and so on. it sits empty now and i prefer it that way. some of the renters were abusive to the house. its an old house and it gettin run down. maybe some day i’ll have the money to fix it, but for now it will remain least from the living.

These stories are true..I’ve heard every one of these stories noumerousof times..!! My Granny lives down the road and she told me why the shutters stay shut..she said that people could see someone in that room just hanging from a rope..Being hung..and it would cause people passing the place to have an accident.!! The shutters are on the bottom right side of the front of the house..!! When you pass the house it’s really makes you wonder..It makes you want to open the shutters to see for your self!!!

My husband and I had heard the rumors surrounding this house, so we actually stopped there several years ago and asked the homeowner about the mysterious window that is covered with shutters. It seems that when remodeling the home, they put a staircase in front of the window and had to then board the window. Nothing spooky about that…

I believe this may be the house beside Camp Nelson Cemetery. The house at the three way at hwys 34 & 27 is a different house. I went on a ghost hunt a few days before Halloween at the Camp Nelson house. I felt absolutely nothing. However, the actual historical Cemetery is another story. I have had my own experiences there.

i have actually been in a car accident at this house!!! i was about 13 and it was me, my dad, brother, and uncle. we were coming back from bowling in danville. me and my brother remember looking at the house cause we heard the stories, and the shutters were open, and we remember seeing someone there, mark my words!!! n then somehow we spun around and our back end went straight into a tree, right beside the bedroom, and the shutters were then shut back! so yes i believe this house to be haunted, i dont know why it causes wrecks, but who knows!!!

Michelle says:

June 26, 2008, 10:08 pm

I know about the house in question, and it is a red brick two story house that sits directly in front of you at the end of the road by the B.P. There used to be a caution light there, but it has been replaced by a regular traffic light. The car wrecks that were mentioned in other blogs are real. They were NOT caused by people looking at the ghosts, but rather by the road playing tricks on the eyes. The road (in the curve) seems to disappear right in front of you, cusing you to want to swerve, if you do swerve you will be sorry because you will HIT the house.

Michelle says:

June 26, 2008, 10:19 pm

If you want to see something truly strange, wonderful, and scary all in one go to the mansion, that sits at the end of Erskine Drive in Danville, Ky. My husband took me to that mansion the other night, and it scared the living **** out of me. We went late at night, and he told me to watch the road. As we traveled to the end, there was nothing there. He turned his high beams on in the truck, and BAM the house just appeared out of th blue. It creeped me out so badly that I had chills all over me. We turned around to leave, and I looked back at the house. It was GONE. Go to Erskine Drive, I promise you will love the thrill. It is very creepy cool.

Tom says:

July 21, 2008, 10:29 pm

The shutters have been closed for years.Rather than
bricking off the window to hide the stairs. They decided it looked better with the shutters closed. If they closed off the window. It would look like a window should be there. Lived in Danville all my life. I go by the house everyday to work.Sorry know ghosts.I;m 45 the story when i was a kid goes as follows.Every time they opened the
shutters. Someone in the family would die.So they kept them closed. Every so many years a new story is invented

Years ago, probably 20 years, I was coming home to Lexington from Russell Springs. While driving up HWY33 before getting to HWY27 I looked to my left into a large field area and witnessed (to me) what looked like a ghost. There was no fog in the area at that time but that is what it appeared to look like. Just a large clump of fog moving through the pasture. I almost slowed to a stop while watching this. I’ve known about the house with closed shutter across from the BP Station and have to wonder if there was any connection between the two. I have always been afraid to tell this story because I thought people may think I’m nuts, but it happened and it was very, very real!

Amanda. says:

February 1, 2009, 2:30 am

I agree with the prior posts regarding the house in Garrard County at the three-way intersection and the remodeling . . .
A friend of mine’s family new the owners [I’m not sure if it’s former orcurrent] but she said that the family had renovated/remodeled the home and after it was completed, a stairwell was located behind that window and rather than having a view of the stairwell from behind the window, they chose to close the shutters.
I was totally bummed when I heard this, though–haha.

Kristin says:

April 18, 2009, 5:52 pm

I use to work at the Bp Station across from the house everyone is talkin about. The shutters on the front of the house is closed because that is a closet now. Back during the War it was the hospital for the wounded. The owners of the house have lived there since 1992 till now. They have never seen any paranormal activity there. That can’t be the same house everyone thinks it is!?!?!

cindy says:

April 21, 2009, 1:53 am

The house across from BP is actually in garrard county. I had heard things about the house and asked my sister who lives right down the road about it. She knew the woman that lived there and asked her about the stories and she just laughed. She said historically, the room was actually a slaves room where the shutters are closed and sealed off. I forgot what the reason was but it had nothing to do with ghosts. sorry :(

My Dad always told me that a young boy was playing in the road and his mom was watching him from the window when he was struck by a horse and buggy. The boy died and is said to haunt people but I believe that it’s just hte light shining from drivers lights.

Britt says:

September 1, 2009, 12:10 am

The story of the little girl/boy being run over is the same one I have always heard. They said that if the shutters were open you would crash or something crazy like that. I just assumed the people who live there keep it boarded up to keep up the history and just the fun of the ghost story. I think the window being boarded up and closed is uglier than any stairwell would be…if they were just closing it because of an ugly staircase, wouldn’t they just use curtains?

Laura says:

June says:

April 9, 2010, 3:35 am

I grew up in Garrard Co. not far from the house at the 34/27 intersection. I went to school at Camp **** Robinson across the road(the old school not the new one there now) and some of my school mates lived in that house. This house is known as the Camp **** Robinson House and is a very historical place. It was indeed used as a civil war hospital/rest camp. There used to be bullet holes in some of the walls way back when, but have obviously been remodeled. There have been several accidents at this intersection but none that are related to ghosts. One accident victim was said to have been startled by the reflection of their own headlights(Thinking there was an oncoming vehicle in her lane)The staircase at the window is true so to solve 2 problems, instead of hanging curtains(thus not covering the outside glass)the shutters come into play. As far as hauntings…to each their own opinion.

Silence says:

April 28, 2010, 12:26 pm

I’ve lived in Jessamine County all my life, I’m 20 now, and I’ve never heard of this house before. I don’t doubt it’s existence though. I would not doubt that I’ve driven by it before. I take I27 to get to Danville…OHHHHHHH! Duh, after you pass Rocky Top, the road that leads to Lake Herrington, and Bob’s Diner…Yes, that is Gerrard County and I’ve seen the house, but as a ghost hunter it has never given me an odd vibe or chills that I can remember. Thanks for the note though:)

Tiffany says:

June 21, 2010, 10:48 am

I have lived near this house for almost 20 years. I have never been inside the home but like everyone else have heard countless stories regarding the reasons for the closed shutters. I can tell you that I only remember the shutters on the house being open twice and in both instances a car accident occured which leads me to belive the reflection from the window had some involvement thus the shutters being closed again. The stories are very interesting though.

Paranormal Hunter says:

Tiffany, would you by any chance have the address to this house and is it abandoned or vacant.

Britt says:

June 27, 2010, 3:23 pm

Someone lives there. It’s actually a pretty nice house. It’s at the intersection of 27 and 34 in Garrard county right across from a gas station. It’s a red brick house with an iron gate. Right on the road, can’t miss it. (and the lower right window is boarded up)

Paranormal Hunter says:

June 27, 2010, 5:56 pm

Britt, do you know if it’s haunted like the stories tell, and do you know the people that own it, thank you by the way for the info.

Britt says:

June 27, 2010, 9:01 pm

No, I don’t know who lives there. I have heard the stories my whole life but none were first hand experiences. They would always say that an accident would occur there if the shutters were off, but I’m sure accidents happen at that intersection all the time so that could just be a coincidence. I’ve only seen the shutters off once in my life and that was years ago when I was in highschool. A friend of mine got into a fender bender there at that time, but she was 16 and talking on her cell at the time so I really don’t think ghosts had anything to do with it. :-)

Paranormal Hunter says:

June 28, 2010, 8:52 am

Thank you Brit for the info, i totaly agree about your friends fender bender. I did some digging and found out that during the cival War that spot had a house that was used to house the wounded and some have passed, so im not sure at what point the house was converted to a brick house but thats ok, thank you agian for the info.

Listen people. I have owned this house for a few years now. You all have not been in my house since i have owned it/lived here. You have no idea what goes on in this house. The previous owners said they had to board the window up, but would never tell my husband and I the explanation. Numerous things have been placed on this rusty colored spot in this smaller bedroom, everytime i walk out of this room i leave the door open so some of the musty odor can escape. When i walk out of the room the door is somehow slammed shut and my thinkgs are thrown against the wall. My husband and I have had several encounters with these “entities”. We have been sitting on the couch and lamps have been THROWN off of my tables. Not to mention the ALL of the other encounters that we have had. Thank goodness we have no children to observe this. Otherwise we would have aold and moved a long time ago. Thanks to all for making it look like my house is responsible for all of these car accidents. I have recieved numerous phone calls and letters in the mail obtaining to try to pursue the suing of me and my husband. Even though no wrecks have happened while we have lived here. No one has come to our door to notify us of this; i guess they are afraid. If anyone would like to visit, you are more than welcome. Thanks to all!

I know someone who used to live in that house across from bp. She would tell me of things she heard. Really the only thing she ever heard was a man sobbing constantly at all hours of the night and day. She left and went to college and only comes back to the house for family gatherings etc.

No a woman was standing in that room watching her son get on the bus. In was in winter. Then suddenly a car had hit him, and killed him. And we cannot use that room now.

The reason that the shutters are there is because of the stairwell that came from the second floor. They added a false window so it didnt look strange from the outside. Everyone in the area has heard of this. I wish it where true because I am a ghost hunter my self but it is not. I know the people that live here so… sorry to bust the bubble.
