Claremont Hotel

Berkeley, California
By Shannon Reinbold-Gee

Many people have checked into hotel rooms labeled “No Smoking” only to find a lingering smell of smoke. But few hotels can legitimately give the reason for such an inconvenience as being the result of a haunting. The Claremont Hotel (now the Claremont Resort and Spa) in Berkeley, California can make such a claim. And the smoke from a long ago fire is not the only thing clinging to the Claremont. It is also home to a playful little girl’s spirit.

In the late 1800s, a young Kansas farmer-turned-prospector by the name of Bill Thornburg was dreaming of gold. Heading to California, he became one of the minority and “struck it rich.” Being “new money” he bought 13,000 acres and built his wife’s dream home—a modern castle. He also had several stables, housing hunter and jumper horses and breeding English foxes for his hunting parties to chase and kill. The Thornburgs’ daughter married and moved away and soon after this, her mother passed away. Disheartened, Bill sold his wife’s castle to the Ballard family.

On a dry summer day in 1901, while the Ballards were away, the castle burned to the ground. Only the stables and barn survived the blaze. The result of a lively game of checkers, the property was won by Frank Havens. In 1905 he began construction on a hotel. The earthquake of 1906 dashed his plans. Not one to give up easily, Havens got the hotel built and opened its doors officially in 1915. Since then it’s changed hands several times and millions of dollars have been invested to make it a first class resort and spa.

People have speculated the 1901 fire is the real reason some guests smell smoke at odd moments in otherwise smoke-free rooms. After the fire almost ruined the structure, renovation led the owners to create a hotel. The Claremont Hotel, some say, looks like it should be haunted.

The fourth floor seems to be the area of the most focused activity. Witnesses report strange problems with flickering lights and televisions turning on while 4th floor guests use their bathroom. The mischief-maker seems to be the spirit of a little girl who died there when she was only six. Some say she died in the hotel, some claim it was in the house that caught fire.

Although her name and the story of her death have been lost to history, the traditional explanation has seemed accurate for years now. People occasionally claim to catch a glimpse of her. Her favorite room seems to be room 422, although the nearby rooms also seem to get some ghostly attention. No one seems particularly worried about the little girl ghost acting dangerously—most actually report getting the sense of a nice presence when she’s near. So, although the Claremont may look creepy to some, rest assured the restless spirit of one little girl will do her best to make visitors on the fourth floor have a memorable stay!

Hey everyone I work at the Spa. It is for sure haunted. The elevators are very scary and also this is really weird the bathroom on the spa floor when you are in there alone you get the feeling there is someone else in the stall next to you and when you look under the door your alone. Also when you are walking through the halls at night it makes you want to run to get through it.

I worked there for 5 years, i was doing room service for quite awhile.
At night, I’d use the service elevator and I’ll have to say that room 409 was very strange, I’ve never seen anything but I could just feel a presence near 409.

Hi,
I have stayed at the Claremont for years and until I had my experience I had no knowledge of the history of the “little girl” and room 422.
My husband and I stayed there and we were walking back to the hotel at night from dinner at a nearby restaurant. There was a room on the 4th floor and the windows were open to the room with the sheer curtains flying out of it. I opened my phone and began to video the window on the fourth flour b/c it looked so strange to see such a billowy white sheer flying up and down out the window. We didn’t speak when we filmed the episode and went back up to our rooms. My husband took a bath and asked me to come in to talk to him. He wanted to see the video clip of what we took. When I played it for him the video was silent except for a long MOM sound made by a girl’s voice. We both freaked went down to front desk and we were told that the window fixtures are all standard 4 inches so that what we saw couldn’t have possibly happened with the sheer curtain flying out the window. Then I mentioned it was on the 4th floor. The staff looked at one another and asked to see the footage. Then they called the management staff and went directly up to 422. I was told that in the 30′s there was a family there that stayed for a while in rooom 422 and they had a little girl who was 6. She went missing one day and everyone thought it was a kidnapping. The mom was beside herself and the Dr sent her to room 422 with a sedative. She kept saying that she kept hearing her daughter saying Mommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Just like I heard on my video phone. They found the daughter in the laundry shoot that went down to the basement. She had “apparently” went down there after losing her ball and was trapped in the shoot. They didn’t find her until the fourth day from the smell. Some of the hotel staff said they think it was a murder and the girl didn’t just fall down the shoot and that is why her spirit lingers at the hotel b/c nobody ever discovered who really killed her. Has anyone heard this side to the Claremont?

Kim:

Your story is the one I was told when I worked there. Ask Chris the Porter or Reg the Doorman..they can confirm your story.

As one who didnt particularly believe in this stuff…I went with some staff and took some friends up to the room…Extremely perceptive drop in temperature when we walked in… I was laughing at everyone becasue it was past midnite and they were all scared. While they were walking around, I sat on the edge of the bed,,,and looked to my left and saw…the bed indent where someone would be sitting next to me..about the size? It went down one inch and was circular…like a kid had jumped up next to me. I heard a sound and swear something brushed my cheek…and giggled. The indent in the bed dissapeared…the hair on the back of my neck stood up..but it was gone. I now believe.

If anyone has any contacts in the hotel, can you have them email me
me. I would like to get more info. The feeling I got when I visited was
that the hotel frowned on it.

Thanks!

I worked graveyards there for about a year. The place is haunted PERIOD!!! I have had glasses and chairs thrown at me, doors slam in my face, doors open on thier own, footsteps following me in the hallways, ghost yelling in my ear, ghost call my name, and alot of other stories. The other ex employee is correct, the room to watch out for is 409 and the ghost to watch out for is the young black woman in the wedding dress that lives in that room. The little girl shows herself more but is no danger at all. The old service elevator is haunted by an old worker. That ghost also hangs around on the 3rd floor and has shown himself alot to workers at night. Ronald Pangan went down that hallway solo on his 1st night (against my advice) and came running down the hallway sweating, goosebumps, and the whole 9. He ran down the stairs cause and would not tell me what he saw for over a month. That ghost also got Ceasar and Rob the night cleaners. Got me to once, but when he called my name i just ran. I was not turning around for that one. HAHAHAHA

I went to the hotel a couple weeks ago and I smelled smoke my cousins said someone was smoking but i ran on every floor but no one was smoking I was staying at the 2 floor. When i slept i heard noises coming from upstairs. i got out of bed and went upstairs i saw the lights flickering. The ice machine room door opened by itsself i went in it and the ice came out by itself i looked to my left and their were stairs i went up the stairs and i saw a pijen the pijon was dead someone had suffacated it i turned around and their was a little girl i ran downstairs to the lobby and asked them if the 3 and 4th floor was haunted they said yes and i checked out and drove back home. I was thinking because the day before i explored the hotel and I went to the mezzine floor and i think it is haunted i want someone to let me know if the m floor is haunted

I lived on Domingo Avenue, right across from the Claremont. My boyfriend and I would have drinks in the Claremont lounge from time to time. You definitely get the feeling you are being followed in the halls (on any floor) when you are walking alone. There are lots of cold spots. My husband and I also often spotted (from across the street) weird floating objects in the top window of the tower of the hotel – blurry objects that would float back and forth (sort of like cartoon-type ghosts, to be honest). For the record, our apartment complex on Domingo was also haunted, so we ended up moving. There is something very odd about that hotel and immediate area around it.

I stayed there (on the first floor) in November 2009. A co-worker of mine had a very strange experience our first night there. On the second night, I went to bed and turned the TV off. I had left it on ABC channel 7. I awoke about an hour and a half later to the TV on, and the channel was on PBS (channel 28). All I could surmise was that the six-year old “ghost” was looking to watch Sesame Street… There was nothing threatening or evil about the experience. It was all very “matter of fact.”
Leaving tomorrow afternoon for another business trip there again. Stay tuned!

My first haunting…. The hotel for me lived up to its history and tale. I experienced a true unbelievable haunting that scared me to silence. Always open to experience a haunting. I went out of my way to put myself in situations that were inviting. And… my room didn’t let me down. I experienced a bed shake that was not anything I could ever make up. Oh ya, people don’t believe me. Whatever… I know what happened behind my closed door. I am so looking for others that experienced the bed shaking as I did, so I can compare what I felt with others.

My fiance and I stayed at the beautiful Claremont just this past weekend.
While returning to our 3rd floor room from the spa level, the elevator stopped at every floor until the 1st floor, where someone boarded the lift, seemed an employee, at least a regular, the door just wouldn’t close, we speculated she was standing too close, but she stated she always stood there, then an alarm went off and the doors closed and we continued finally after several minutes without any further incident.

My son and I stayed there a few nights ago while touring UC Berkeley. To be honest, as we pulled up I said…”Oh my God, this place looks like The Shining!” We were taken to our room, #407. The room had a very oppressive feel to it, the hallway too. I looked at my son and said, “I can feel a spirit here!” My son did his typical…”Yah right MOM!” I knew nothing of the history of the hotel. It was hot so we turned on the air and left for the rest of the day. We came back after dinner and the room was even hotter than before, the air was blowing out heat full blast. My son turned on the TV and then said he couldn’t change the channels or the volume…he no longer had control of the TV. I called the front desk and told them that the air wasn’t working and they promptly sent up an electrical engineer. My son still couldn’t control the TV. I sat in the chair and said out loud, “OK, I know you’re here, you know I know you’re here so let’s just get along!” The TV changed stations!!! The engineer came and found that the air was stuck in the heating mode, he adjusted it. I still felt the presence of a spirit…can’t quite put it to words. The engineer and I were chatting, I was saying how I knew that someone else was in the room, other than the obvious and he concurred. He went on to tell me many stories, one of which I read on this page. He’s worked there for 7 + years. He said he’d come back in a few minutes to check to see if the air was still working. When he left it started blowing hot again. The room at this point was freaking me out…I had to move. I knew I’d never get any sleep in this room. I called the front desk and requested a new room. They were so accommodating. They took us down to the 2nd floor…immediately upon exiting the elevator on the 2nd floor I felt better, like the air was easier to breathe. The room we moved to was fine…I can’t say I had the best night sleep or that I’d want to stay there again. I can say the service was excellent and the ghost that we experienced wasn’t mean but was most definitely present. This experience led me to look up the history of the hotel and the possibility of ghosts. I am definitely certain that we felt the presence of at least one spirit (ghost).

So, my buddy, Lucas, and I stayed at the Claremont a few weeks back. We check in to our room and we´re sitting down and all the sudden I smell smoke. I turn and look at Lucas and he´s smoking a cig in the no smoking room! I tell him, Lucas, put that out, ya dummy! He says, o god, I had no idea I was smoking and he proceeded to put it out on the terrace outside. This place really affects you in a weird way…

Just got back from a business trip, staying in room 307. Awoke in the middle of the night to someone pulling the sheet over my head and then putting his hands on my shoulders and neck, and pushing me into the pillow, as if he wanted to suffocate me. I shrieked into the pillow and the hands and weight vanished. I bolted up, checked the room, chain still on the door…no one there. In the morning, I was so freaked out that I googled “ghost at the Claremont” to see if I was nuts. I got to this page and then my iPad froze up – wouldn’t let me close the page or change the page. Had to do a hard restart away from the hotel. Had chills going up and down the hallway. At dinner, I talked to a waiter who was a long time employee, told him not to think I was nuts, but I thought there was a those on the third floor…and he said, don’t you mean the fourth floor? I told him my story, and freaked him out, too. So…I went to the front desk and asked for a room change, which they did in an instant after hearing my tale, very accommodating, and never a whiff of “we don’t believe you”. The ghostie wasn’t going hurt me, but a girl needs her sleep. Still a great place to stay, love the old school feel.
