Hatchet Lady Bridge

07.23.2005 | 7:42 am | Colorado, Golden, United States

Beneath this bridge, the decapitated body of Adolph Coors’ son was found. If one cross the bridge in a car, it will sputter inexplicably. The car does not completely lose control, however, and one can safely make it across the bridge.

  1. Interesting except that no Coors has ever been be-headed. Nothing in the history of the family on it at all.

  2. I grew up in Colorado hearing about the legend of the Hatchet Lady whose ghost inhabits the rock formations at Red Rocks Park west of Denver. There was a member of the Coors family who was kidnapped and killed as a young child, but I don’t remember where his body was found. The two stories; one real, the other not, are not related in any way that I know of.

  5. The first one was actually right. WAY FREAKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. One question, though. Why is it called the Hatchet Lady Bridge? There’s nothing in the story about a woman with a hatchet. Or am I just deluded?

  8. Adolph Coors III was kidnapped and murdered in 1960 by James Corbitt. His body was found 8 mos. later, and his head was not attached. Investiators attribute the detached head to wild animals.

  11. I was raised around the Morrison/Golden area, and The Hatchet Lady rumours are true-she was killed in the late 1800’s (with a Hatchet) and is buried at the Cemetary (where she co-habitates)located in the Red Rock Park (Southeast Corner). There have been some scary things happen there-been there when they did!

  21. This is ridiculous. Any real investigation into a possible paranormal activity is hampered by these idiotic made up stories. Whether ghosts are real or not remains a matter of conjecture, but this is a fact. You could delete 98 percent of this kind of **** of the internet then focus on the 2 percent of possible credible phenomena. Maybe then there would be an answer. It doesn’t really matter though from the quality of these posts obviously we have the reality tv generation making itself heard. Sad, very sad. If this offends any of you cretins, good that is what is was supposed to do. Have a nice day morons.

  22. The Hatchet Lady is actually the resident ghost of Red Rocks Park, in Morrison, not Golden. She was looking for her son, and carries a hatchet over her shoulder and a lamp, they say — or this is the version my mother told me.

Morrison on it’s own is still pretty haunted. And this is a classic urban legend about a car sputtering over the bridge, being miraculously pushed across.

If people DO want to look for the Hatchet Lady, she’s in Red Rocks, not Golden.

  23. This entry is inaccurate. It has confused at least two stories, one true and one… Well, you will have to take one of the many available haunted house/ghost tours to decide. This “Hachet Lady Bridge” entry doesn’t get anything quite right.

It was not Adolph Coors’ son but Adolph Coors himself who was shot and killed in 1960. Adolph Coors lived in Morrison and worked in Golden. The murder occured on Turkey Creek Bridge, Morrison. (Does anyone know if the bridge is still there since the roads have changed dramatically since 1960?) His body, however, was not found under the bridge. It was found 7 months later about 30 miles away, south of Sedalia. His head was probably separated from his body by wild animals.

The story of the Hatchet Lady is connected with Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. (Does anyone know if there ever was a bridge associated with that story?) The Hachet Lady is a ghost story you can hear if you take one of the many tours that are offered locally.

  24. I just watched the Forensic Files show about Adolph Coors. It was a failed kidnapping attempt of Adolph Coors III. He was shot twice in the back on Turkey Creek bridge in Golden, CO in Feb 1960. They found his body 8 months later in the Pikes Peak region with 2 bullet holes in his right shoulder blade. He was not a child himself but a father of 4. His car was found running on Turkey Creek bridge as well as a pool of his blood and his baseball cap was in the creek.

  25. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The car he was kidnapped from was found on the bridge THAT WAS ALL. His dismembered body was found in a trash dump in Sedalia, CO.

  26. I grew up in Golden and from what I understand about the Hatchet Lady is that she exists in both Red Rocks park in Morrison, and Lookout Mountain in Golden. She does this by means of a porthole that is at the bottom of Lookout Mountain, if you go check it out there is two stone pillars that have arched doorways in them for no apparent reason. It is said that she goes in one side of the pillar doorway, which somehow gets her to Red Rocks, and then she comes out the other pillar doorway to haunt Lookout Mountain. The porthole on the Red Rocks side is in the 6th row 6th seat and can only switch between both on the 6th of each month, go and see for yourself, really scary!

  33. If you folks are not too lazy to do a little research, I’m sure there’s a website out there that handles nothing but ‘newspaper articles’, why don’t you all find that site and see if anyone was reported as losing his head under a bridge! And by the way, you all need to grow up! lol

  34. For everyone that thinks the Coors murder is faulse you may want to Google him. This did happen and is a true story. I’m not sure if the bridge is still standing as C470 is the old Soda Lakes road.

  35. I have heard her called the hatchet lady for years. In fact when i was a kid my mother used to take us up to Red Rocks at night to look for her ghost. IT IS AMAZING TO ME THAT THIS IS SUCH AN UNDER REPORTED GHOST STORY! The tale i heard is that “The Hatchet Lady” or “Old lady with a lantern” as we called her. Lost her husband to in a train robbery and his body was founf in what is now Red Rocks Park. She refused to believe that he was dead and night after night she would go looking for her “Johnny” as he was called. One night she went out in a blizzard and never retured. Her ghost is said to haunt the park and she carries a lantern. The hatchet part I don’t know about, but I have seen this ghost many times and this is no lie. She has long black hair and is dressed in a white gown or cloak with the hood up, she carries a red lantern. I saw her when I was about 13 and had 2 other witnesses with me. My friend Steven and my mother. Over the years I’ve heard numerous stories about people seeing her walking along the road in the park and asking her if she needs a ride and she declines. I’ve also heard the “stoner” myth of “if you sit in the amphitheater in the 13th row in the 13th seat and say ‘Cry Baby, Cry’ 13 times the hatchet lady will come and cut your head off”. This is utter hog-wash! There is a ghost up there though, I’ve seen it.

  37. THIS STORY IS TRUE.. AND THEIR REALLY IS A GHOST OVER AT RED ROCKS…. BUT ITS HARD TO BELIEVE WHICH ONE IS THE REAL STORY OR WHY THAT GHOST IS UP THERE TO BEGIN WITH, EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT VERSION… AND AS TIME GOES BY PEOPLE WILL ADD MORE TO THE STORY.. PEOPLE STICK WITH ONE VERSION!!! :)
