Cry Baby Bridge & Kali Oka

Saraland, Alabama
By Robin Wright

Take a turn off of Kali Oka Road in Saraland, Alabama, go carefully around Dead Man’s Curve (so named for the numerous fatal car accidents) and you will be heading towards Cry Baby Bridge and the Kali Oka Plantation. The plantation may look familiar to independent film buffs as it was used as the location for the horror film “Dead Birds,” where a mix of demonology and voodoo create a horrible place to stay the night in post-Civil War Alabama. There is an eerie aura around the plantation house and the smaller house that was once the slaves’ quarters. Some have said they have seen a woman in white lighting candles in a window. Others have spotted a hulking African American man, believed to have once been a slave on the plantation, walking the Kali Oka Road. These two ghosts, it has been said, are the reason you can hear a baby cry at night on the bridge just down the road.

The woman was the mistress of the plantation house, and her husband was an abusive, cold-hearted master. The giant was a slave and the Mistress’s lover. One night, the master of the house followed his wife as she entered the slaves’ quarters just behind the plantation house. He caught them in a lovers’ embrace, pulled them apart and at knife-point, forced the slave to a tree where he was chained up. Both of his hands were cut off for daring to touch the master’s wife, and he was left to die as a warning to others. Afterwards, the mistress of the house discovered she was pregnant. According to local tradition, she delivered a baby boy in the woods and drowned him in the nearby creek, where Cry Baby Bridge crosses today. Now, they say, one can hear the baby cry as his poor, innocent body touches the cold, running water in a constant repetition of his mother’s desperate betrayal. The slave still walks the road, looking for the son he’ll never know on the mortal plane.

But there is another version of the story, too…

Some believe the Master actually showed favoritism towards his behemoth slave. After the master’s death, however, the wife was the one who tied him up to the tree because she hated him so much. Insanely jealous, she supposedly left him tied to the tree in front of the house so that she could watch as he died a slow death.

Cry Baby Bridge also has multiple legends as to why one can hear a baby cry when you cross it at night. Some say a bunch of kids were playing on the bridge when they knocked a boy into the creek, where he downed. There are a few versions that a woman and her baby had a tragic accident. In some versions, she escapes and doesn’t even try to save the baby, in others, both she and the baby die. Those who follow logic claim that the sound is actually the wind blowing across the pipes that lay beneath the bridge, but that does not explain why cars have so much trouble crossing the bridge at night. Cars will stall, lights will go haywire, and some have even reported that their cars have moved from one end of the bridge to the other without any earthly aid.

Some have tried to get physical proof of the bridge’s haunting by sprinkling baby powder on a car from bumper to bumper. Wait inside the car for a few minutes, then go out and look. Some say that you will see a toddler’s hand and footprints. Another, much more satisfying twist on this (some have suggested) is to send a passenger out to sprinkle the car with baby powder. When they get out, drive away, leaving them alone in the dark to experience the bridge for themselves for a few frightening minutes. But we would never suggest such shenanigans….

No one knows which, if any, of the stories are true. Everyone does agree, however, that there is something definitely otherworldly in this area of Alabama. The plantation house has been relatively recently purchased and renovated by a family who do not seem bothered by the ghosts that haunt Kali Oka Road.

i went to cry baby bridge and parked on the side. Me and my boyfriend were just looking for a quiet place to bang bang boogie. All of a sudden we heard cries. The windows were all foggy because of the sexual tension and all of a sudden a hand print appeared in the foggyness of the window. We were really scared and my sex was bad because of it. We will never go back there because not only was it scary but he didnt finish.

ok guys look I live in semmes, not 10 minutes from saraland (where the bridge is) I have been MANY times and had very different experiences each time I have tried the baby powder and everything I have taken all of my friends it is VERY real! Also, about a half mile from the bridge (going away from the plantation on oak grove there is dead mans curve, and many people have died here if you’ve drove down Kali oka you’ll know why! Also I have been to the plantation house many times growing up when it was abandoned because my aunt nikki lives like a quarter mile passed it on oak grove me and my cousins made the mistake of riding our 4- wheelers to it late one night you WILL see a man in the top window of the second house and you can see a woman in a large white dress lighting a candle on the first story window to the right! The other people who said it has been renovated and other people own it now are correct they have cristmas lights GALORE! But i just thought i would inform the people who think they know what they are talking about on here! Peace.

there seems to be a cry baby bridge in every town I have lived in but I must say that the one in Vinita Oklahoma is the best. however after several hours of trying to find the sound of the baby crying, somefriends of mine and others myself included realized it was two tree branches rubbing togather that really did sound like a baby crying. So I am almost sure every cry baby bridge has an explanation if your willing to look for one

Hey, I live in Alabama.
There was recently a man murdered in Madison, in Huntsville. His house is out near Greenbier and supposedly haunted by his ghost. Heres how the story goes:
The man was just sitting in his house asleep in his chair from watching his T.V. His neighbor goes crazy and comes over to his house and shoots him 6 times. Then the crazy man goes back to his house and burns it down for no reason. And if you go into his house late at night (or early in the morning 10:30-2:30) you can hear the static of the T.V. and sometimes you and see the man in the corner just staring.
I’ve been to the house, the people around here have nick-named it: The Caution House (because of the police caution tap around it. When I was there I didn’t hear any static but I THOUGHT I was being watched and saw someone in a corner.
If you live near Madison check it out, ask me for directions.
-Jason

I’ve been to the crybaby bridge in Edgefield many times. I’ve never believed in ghosts, spirits, or any of that stuff the slightest bit, until a picture was taken in my car right outside of horns creek church. There is a ghost in my rear view mirror, no doubt. If you dont believe me, email me at REmathews@usca.edu and I’ll send you the picture.

I live in Illinois. I know of this place called KC Bridge. I went there and it was totally scary, I could hear the baby crying. OMG! Legend has it that 1 year there was this really bad snow storm when this woman and her baby were going across a bridge. Her car broke down and wouldn’t start back. She was about 5 miles out of town. No 1 lived around. The woman bundled up her baby very warmly and got out of the car. The place was on a road next to a cemetary. She took her baby over to the cemetary and laid her baby behind a tall stone where the wind couldn’t get 2 the baby. Then she started walking. It was a really bad blizzard and she froze 2 death b4 she could get 2 civilization. Her baby died too. Now if u go out there when it is dark, and listen really carefully, u can hear a baby crying and a woman screaming 4 her baby. It is completely and totally 100% true. I swear!

With all of this talk about Cry Baby Bridge off Kali-oka, how come no one has mentioned Soul City? There are confirmed wierd things that have happened there. I havent been back to Alabama in many years, but i actually think they may have messed soul city up when the widened the road. not too sure though.

ive visited the bridge quite a few times. mostly in the day time but once me and a few of my friends were out and they dared me and my boyfriend to stand up there and makeout. so when we did, all we heard was what sounded like a big splash in some water not to far away. so we just both looked at each other and took of running!!! but i wont ever forget it! it was such a thrilling time!!
