Cry Baby Bridge & Kali Oka

Saraland, Alabama
By Robin Wright

Take a turn off of Kali Oka Road in Saraland, Alabama, go carefully around Dead Man’s Curve (so named for the numerous fatal car accidents) and you will be heading towards Cry Baby Bridge and the Kali Oka Plantation. The plantation may look familiar to independent film buffs as it was used as the location for the horror film “Dead Birds,” where a mix of demonology and voodoo create a horrible place to stay the night in post-Civil War Alabama. There is an eerie aura around the plantation house and the smaller house that was once the slaves’ quarters. Some have said they have seen a woman in white lighting candles in a window. Others have spotted a hulking African American man, believed to have once been a slave on the plantation, walking the Kali Oka Road. These two ghosts, it has been said, are the reason you can hear a baby cry at night on the bridge just down the road.

The woman was the mistress of the plantation house, and her husband was an abusive, cold-hearted master. The giant was a slave and the Mistress’s lover. One night, the master of the house followed his wife as she entered the slaves’ quarters just behind the plantation house. He caught them in a lovers’ embrace, pulled them apart and at knife-point, forced the slave to a tree where he was chained up. Both of his hands were cut off for daring to touch the master’s wife, and he was left to die as a warning to others. Afterwards, the mistress of the house discovered she was pregnant. According to local tradition, she delivered a baby boy in the woods and drowned him in the nearby creek, where Cry Baby Bridge crosses today. Now, they say, one can hear the baby cry as his poor, innocent body touches the cold, running water in a constant repetition of his mother’s desperate betrayal. The slave still walks the road, looking for the son he’ll never know on the mortal plane.

But there is another version of the story, too…

Some believe the Master actually showed favoritism towards his behemoth slave. After the master’s death, however, the wife was the one who tied him up to the tree because she hated him so much. Insanely jealous, she supposedly left him tied to the tree in front of the house so that she could watch as he died a slow death.

Cry Baby Bridge also has multiple legends as to why one can hear a baby cry when you cross it at night. Some say a bunch of kids were playing on the bridge when they knocked a boy into the creek, where he downed. There are a few versions that a woman and her baby had a tragic accident. In some versions, she escapes and doesn’t even try to save the baby, in others, both she and the baby die. Those who follow logic claim that the sound is actually the wind blowing across the pipes that lay beneath the bridge, but that does not explain why cars have so much trouble crossing the bridge at night. Cars will stall, lights will go haywire, and some have even reported that their cars have moved from one end of the bridge to the other without any earthly aid.

Some have tried to get physical proof of the bridge’s haunting by sprinkling baby powder on a car from bumper to bumper. Wait inside the car for a few minutes, then go out and look. Some say that you will see a toddler’s hand and footprints. Another, much more satisfying twist on this (some have suggested) is to send a passenger out to sprinkle the car with baby powder. When they get out, drive away, leaving them alone in the dark to experience the bridge for themselves for a few frightening minutes. But we would never suggest such shenanigans….

No one knows which, if any, of the stories are true. Everyone does agree, however, that there is something definitely otherworldly in this area of Alabama. The plantation house has been relatively recently purchased and renovated by a family who do not seem bothered by the ghosts that haunt Kali Oka Road.

Im brooke, and the baby is actually my fourth cousin. People twist and turn the story so much, but really she was on her way to church in a hurry and wrecked with the baby in here lap. I live maybe 15 minutes if that from the bridge and we go every year around halloween and nothing has happened yet. I can gurantee you it is not haunted.

I WENT TO THE CRYBABY BRIDGE IN OLATHE, KANSAS. Me and my friends drove over there, turned off our car, rolled down the windows, and listened. At first, we didn’t hear anything so we got out of the car and from the top of the bridge, shined a flashlight on the creek. We looked down, and SAW THE BABY picking it’s nose and playing with it’s boogers! It was SO SCARY! Then, we ran back to the car, screaming and THE STEERING WHEEL WAS COVERED IN BOOGERS! You guys, I am warning you right now. DO NOT GO TO CRYBABY BRIDGE! I have had trouble sleeping ever since I went there. Do not go!

I have heard of a cry baby bridge in Mississippi , that if you go there at night and park on the bridge with lights off , you can hear a baby crying and when you go to start your car it won’t start , I went there with a couple of friends and their kids , which the kids have never heard the story about it , and their little boy about 5 at the time turned and said he heard a baby crying , but us adults never did hear it , But the little boy never even heard the story about the bridge .

There is a crybaby bridge in every state. I’ve lived in Iowa, Illinois, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama, and there is literally a cry baby bridge in every one of them. I’ve been to a few, but the only one that I know of that is actually a for sure thing, is in Illinois. Viola, I believe the name of the town was. My friends and I went there one night, did exactly what we were supposed to do, with the baby powder and stuff, and it worked. And it was a hill, as well, we were facing UP hill, so it was no coincedence. It was really freaky, but really cool. Part of that bridge was damaged in the accident (a schoolbus or something, I think the story went) and it has never been repaired.

Anyway…thought I’d share that little tidbit. Not every crybaby bridge is the real thing.

I have a friend who’s son has been missing for 8 years now. He is believed murdered. Her nieces said their dad took them to Cry Baby Hollow off hwy 31 in Alabama and showed them his body (their father was a suspect in his disappearance). Detectives never bothered looking there, because they think he isn’t deceased. If anyone is interested in helping, then searching that area for remains (skeletal at this point) would be appreciated, and reporting them to the authorities if you do locate them.

I used to go to crybaby bridge in Lawton, OK all the time when I was a teenager. I have seen and heard some wierd things out there! They used to say if you went out there a big black truck would appear and chase you away! It was located West of Lawton on Hwy 7 (Lee blvd) then you turn South on Deyo mission road. A mile or so down the road there is a water tower on the right side at an intersection it has Devol on the side (like Devil but I believe it is a nearby community). Turn right at this intersection and it was the first bridge you come too. It used to be a small steel girder bridge, it has since been torn down and replaced with a normal looking large concrete bridge.

Has anyone heard the story about the train that hit the bus? It was sort of like this… But the bus was hit by a train, and it’s said if you go there and put your car in neutral and put baby powder on your bumper that your car will start moving uphill and that once it’s safe on the other side you can get out and see childrens hand prints on your car. They are said to be saving you from what happened to them. Gives me chills! A friend of mine actually went here and she said her car moved, let me know!

just to let you people know i have been there about a million times and yea the story behind it all about the baby drowning is true but most people who go there are under the influence of either a)alcohol or b)some sort of drug so most people usually imagine or “think” that they seen footprints nd heard the baby crying.

I live like two miles from cry baby bridge..I’ve been under it and yes, some idiots do ritchuals underneath..lots of animal bones and penagrams wrongully used..I’ve never had an experience and I’m a sensitive. I have had many experinces in the plantations which are directly beside cry baby bridge but you can’t go in their anymore because someone is living in them now. BEAUTIFUL houses. I believe that what they were hearing was a Panther..we do have those I’ve seen them and so have others. They can sound like a woman screaming and a baby.

Jessica, refering to your question about the bus that was hit by a trian, we have a similar rumour in South Africa, in Port Elizabeth to be exact. Also about young children pushing your car and you can find their finger prints on the back of your car afterwards. I wouldnt read to much into it.
