Cry Baby Bridge & Kali Oka

Saraland, Alabama
By Robin Wright

Take a turn off of Kali Oka Road in Saraland, Alabama, go carefully around Dead Man’s Curve (so named for the numerous fatal car accidents) and you will be heading towards Cry Baby Bridge and the Kali Oka Plantation. The plantation may look familiar to independent film buffs as it was used as the location for the horror film “Dead Birds,” where a mix of demonology and voodoo create a horrible place to stay the night in post-Civil War Alabama. There is an eerie aura around the plantation house and the smaller house that was once the slaves’ quarters. Some have said they have seen a woman in white lighting candles in a window. Others have spotted a hulking African American man, believed to have once been a slave on the plantation, walking the Kali Oka Road. These two ghosts, it has been said, are the reason you can hear a baby cry at night on the bridge just down the road.

The woman was the mistress of the plantation house, and her husband was an abusive, cold-hearted master. The giant was a slave and the Mistress’s lover. One night, the master of the house followed his wife as she entered the slaves’ quarters just behind the plantation house. He caught them in a lovers’ embrace, pulled them apart and at knife-point, forced the slave to a tree where he was chained up. Both of his hands were cut off for daring to touch the master’s wife, and he was left to die as a warning to others. Afterwards, the mistress of the house discovered she was pregnant. According to local tradition, she delivered a baby boy in the woods and drowned him in the nearby creek, where Cry Baby Bridge crosses today. Now, they say, one can hear the baby cry as his poor, innocent body touches the cold, running water in a constant repetition of his mother’s desperate betrayal. The slave still walks the road, looking for the son he’ll never know on the mortal plane.

But there is another version of the story, too…

Some believe the Master actually showed favoritism towards his behemoth slave. After the master’s death, however, the wife was the one who tied him up to the tree because she hated him so much. Insanely jealous, she supposedly left him tied to the tree in front of the house so that she could watch as he died a slow death.

Cry Baby Bridge also has multiple legends as to why one can hear a baby cry when you cross it at night. Some say a bunch of kids were playing on the bridge when they knocked a boy into the creek, where he downed. There are a few versions that a woman and her baby had a tragic accident. In some versions, she escapes and doesn’t even try to save the baby, in others, both she and the baby die. Those who follow logic claim that the sound is actually the wind blowing across the pipes that lay beneath the bridge, but that does not explain why cars have so much trouble crossing the bridge at night. Cars will stall, lights will go haywire, and some have even reported that their cars have moved from one end of the bridge to the other without any earthly aid.

Some have tried to get physical proof of the bridge’s haunting by sprinkling baby powder on a car from bumper to bumper. Wait inside the car for a few minutes, then go out and look. Some say that you will see a toddler’s hand and footprints. Another, much more satisfying twist on this (some have suggested) is to send a passenger out to sprinkle the car with baby powder. When they get out, drive away, leaving them alone in the dark to experience the bridge for themselves for a few frightening minutes. But we would never suggest such shenanigans….

No one knows which, if any, of the stories are true. Everyone does agree, however, that there is something definitely otherworldly in this area of Alabama. The plantation house has been relatively recently purchased and renovated by a family who do not seem bothered by the ghosts that haunt Kali Oka Road.

I could find only 2 bridges on Kali Oka Rd. using Google Earth. If you’re interested in finding the bride(s), follow this link and download the image (right click and click Save Picture/Image As…).

The bridge(s) are marked by thumb tacks. Directions are North on Hwy. 45, 2.35 miles passed Kushla McLeod Rd., turn right onto Kali Oka Rd. First bridge is 1 mile North. Second bridge is approximately a half mile North of that location OR from Hwy. 158 (also know as Industrial Parkway), go West 1 mile from I-65, right onto Kali Oka Rd., North for 6.25 miles to the 2nd bridge, 1st bridge is a half mile South.

These stories about young children dying always upset me. Can you really hear crying? I’d hate to be there when that happens. I hope I never EVER have to see a young child die.

I knew a girl that was hired as the care taker of the old plantation in Sarahland,Al. The university hired her just for the summer because people were vandalizing the place. It was and may still be under construction. She said after the first month she couldn’t deal with the things she couldn’t explain and quit the job. When she took the job hauntings and ghosts weren’t her motive it was just supposed to be something different. And basically she won’t talk about it and she even get’s a little scittish if you bring it up.She did say she saw things and heard things that did not make sense. And i do think you have to ask the university to go to the nearby cemetary only at night.I heard that on Halloween there is some kind of tour so if you want to sneak out there make sure it’s pretty late so you don’t get caught. You can make your own decision but i don’t really know for sure. I have to see to beleive i guess!!

The Plantation in Saraland,Alabama is own by the University of Mobile. Yes, they fixed it up. Yes, Someone lives there but not in the House. In the Slave Quarters/House in the back.

The REAL Story of the Plantation is there was a White Family living there during the Slave Period. The Master of the House own some Black Slaves: the Maids and the field workers, etc..
Well The Master’s wife was waking up late and leaving her husband side to be with her lover, a black slave. Well One night, The Master followed her, out the bedroom, down the hall, down the stairs and out the slave enterance, to one of the Slave Houses. He waited a few mins, and return with a kitchen knife.
He looked through the windows to find his wife making love to the black slave man. Well he busted through the door and grab her off him and told her to get back. Then the Master tied the black slave guy to a Tree (that still stands today as I type), cutting of both his hands and leaving him there to die. Well as for the Master’s wife she had the black slave’s baby. The Master got rid of her and sent her packing with the baby.

The Haunting of the Black Slave:
Yes, You can see the slave walking alone the dirt road near the Plantation or on the brigde looking for the baby. It drives him insane. That’s why your car has srcatches on it or your car wouldn’t start or your tires look like someone poked a hole in them with a knife.
The Haunting ofthe Baby Crying Cry Baby Bridge:

After leaving the Plantation, The Master’s wife drown the baby in the creek. Where the Bridge is today.. Yes, it is Haunting by her baby crying because the water was so cold. The Master’s wife lived in the woods, where she gave birth to a Baby boy. The Urban Lengend that the cops want you to believe is some women driving off the bridge, killing her and the baby. Yes you can hear the baby crying only close to Halloween. Because this all took places Oct 29, 1903 – Oct 31, 1903

The reason I know so much is…The Master of the houses was my Great Great Grandfather…

It’s that time of the year you can see the slave walking near the Plantation or on the bridge and hear the baby crying!! Starting Oct 29-31 is the best time to go there and see it or hear it for yourself.

I took a few pics of the bridge (the Saraland, Al one..on Kali Oka Rd.) a few months ago along with Oak Grove Rd and the yard leading to the plantation and cemetery, I think I still have them in my photobucket actually.
I’ve heard all the stories about the place, and in truth, when you go there at night after hearing all of these things, you really do start hearing and seeing things. It’s a freaky atmosphere, almost no light on the road at all and aside from the hum of your engine, no noise.
I’ve never heard a baby crying, but I did see a man walking on Kali Oka on Christmas night in 02 i think, I believe it was around 230 am (my grandma lives right on celeste rd and we were living in Semmes at the time) anyway, I’ve never seen anyone actually walking on that road, ever, and it freaked me out lol. Can’t say if he was a ghost or not though because I didn’t stay to ask!

Wanna see some of the house? Watch the movie dead birds. Some of the film was filmed there. Uncles security company did the security for the movie and his son actually stayed in it for like 2-3 weeks at night. I have photos. The University did own it at the time but now I believe someone bought the place. It was two houses side by side and a old small house/shed in the back. (Did look like a slave quarters- I suppose)Been there a few times. Never heard anything at the bridge but at the house. Me my wife and my cousin was upstairs in the first house and most of the windows were boarded up but a few werent and one on the back right side wasnt and we noticed like a light floating in the sky as we walked by as fast as we noticed it it disappeared. Another was a photo took by my cousin on one of the nights he was alone. Picture was a photo of the barn and in the photo you can see the outline of what appears to be person hanging (Like a shadow). This is not a Joke like some of the doodas above;-} This is all I know about the subject and everything I just said is 100% true
