Cry Baby Woods
Way on back in the 1800’s a young women was running away from slave hunters. She had her young baby with her. The baby kept crying and she drowned the baby in a creek so he wouldn’t give her away. Today if you go back into the woods at night you can hear and sometimes see the little baby crying and looking for his mother.

This is actually county road 675E in Hancock County though many residents call it “Main Street” since so many years ago, people would arrive to the cemetery (Hays Cemetery) via traveling south on Main Street through the country. Main Street turns into County Road 50W and then curves into Nashville Road.
The bridge is a one lane iron bridge built in 1886 and restored in 2006. Much graffiti covers the bridge now. The cemetery is just after this bridge if heading south and sits about 1/4 mile off from the road and is very secluded. It’s easy to see how people could be at unease with this location.
Within the last two months, this resting site has met much vandalisim.
People consider it as Pendleton; however, it is not in Madison County – it is in Hancock County and the nearest Hancock County town is the little berg of Willow Branch.

I live in Anderson, Indiana about 20 mins from main st. graveyard , and crybaby bridge, now the story of slave escaping from slaveowners drowning their baby, last time i checked Indiana was against slaves, unless the slave owner trekked up from the south and was close enough to hear the baby cry, she was going to get caught anyways if thats the case,, but there is something to the stories , i have visited the graveyard , and crybaby bridge, as they are only a few blocks from eachother, the graveyard didn’t see or hear anything but their is a creepy feeling,, a group of 12 of us 3 cars worth , felt very uneasy, and didn’t make it more than 1 hour, before we sensed it was time to go, cry baby bridge on the other hand , we parked the car , not exactly at midnite but a very few of us walked across it , and was only 30 feet away from the cars, we didn’t hear no baby, or anything else for the matter, but at the exact second the 3 of bolted back towards the cars , and did about 120 mph back down main st. to anderson,, a few times looking in rearview behind us at the other car it appeared to see the headlights blink 1 then the other, as if something ran in front of their car, this happened a few times, and when we reached village pantry on 53rd and main, to regroup they reported seeing nothing in there path, never seen nothing or heard a sound out of ordinary at yard or bridge,, but something gave us all a fright that we can’t explain,, heart hasn’t raced like that since,

i was out in Indiana about 2 years ago visiting my aunt and uncle. Well i was told about cry baby brigde, and thought that it would be cool to at least check it out. I went not expecting anything to happen. I was told that at midnight you can hear a baby crying and if you drive your car across it at midnight that your car will trun off, or something like that. Anyways we got there about 10 min before 12am so we drove across the bridge parked next to the corn field which was almost creepier then the bridge..lol… but we stood on the bridge for about 20 mins or so nothing ever happend. But it definately is a creepy place. Even though nothing happened to us it was fun, (maybe the baby didn’t want to come out that night?haha) But the drive to the bridge and back is erie, its like some scary movie where some crazy deformed person is going to jump out of the corn fields at your car or some ghost is going to past by!!

What the story leaves out is that the woman was a mother to more than only one child. Would you or could you sacrafice one child for the safety of the others. Also, was the woman running from a slave master or perhaps something else……..Isn’t it more likely she was HIDING under the bridge rather than runing along in the splashing water. Maybe the true haunting soul is what she was trying to evade….The source that makes all of us run in fear back to the safety of our cars is logically what made her hide, frozen in fear under the bridge. A crying baby is least of our concerns…Always consider the bigger picture or in this case, the bigger ghost………

I have heard of this since I was a child. The creek that this was suppose to happen in, was Buck Creek in Muncie and near the Buck Creek woods, near IMI. Also there is a story about a man who was found hung from a tree, with his hands and feet tied behind his back. They ruled it a suicide.

Cry baby bridge is called Woodward bridge, Near Dublin, Indiana at the intersection of Glory and Heacock road.the road to the bridge is closed off by a iron gate.it was built in the 1900’s.The bridge is now demolished and only the pilers mark the spot now.The woman didn’t kill her baby! She was driving and it was dark and raining she lost control of the car and her and the baby went into the water. The womans body was found, but the only trace of the baby was it’s blanket. No one new were the woman was from so she was buried in a pauper’s grave along with the blanket. You don’t hear the baby cyring you hear her crying, and asking where her baby is.The wreak happened in the 50’s or 60’s. She’s buried in one of the older grave yards around there.

Pendleton
Cry Baby Bridge -On N675E (Thomas Road) there is a bridge. It is just north of the Main Street (Hayes Family) Cemetery. A woman was to have thrown her infant off of this bridge. If you park on this bridge your car will not start back up. You also might hear the mother sobbing, or the baby crying. We took our kids to this bridge and we shut the car off and my step son and I got out. We waited a few minutes and the only thing we heard was an annoying dog barking. I turned to the boy close to me and whispered “Let’s tell them we heard something, to scare them”. Before we could carry out this diabolical plan of mine there came from the river below and upstream a low, granular moaning. We looked at each other in surprise then we hollered for the others to come out and hear this. One rolled the window down about a sixteenth of an inch and said she could hear it, the others battened down the hatches and were not going to have any part of this. We slowly and in an organized fashion bolted for the car, which was slow to start. All in all…unless somebody has the time to wade upstream and wait for someone to come along and park on the bridge while his prank buddy sneaks under the hood of the car and messes with stuff, this phenomenon works. See also Markleville.
Hayes Family Cemetery — (Main Street Graveyard ) See also: Markleville. This is an old cemetery. Most of the headstones are dated in the early to mid 1800’s including the founder of the township. It is said that two headstones have pentacles on them and that there is a skull embedded into one of the trees. There is reputed to be blood running from some of the markers, but my investigation found that it is red paint as there is R.I.P. written in the same color as the “blood” on another tombstone. People say that while here they hear unexplainable noises in the woods that get louder the longer they stay. I have felt a welcome breeze here that did seem to pick up as I was here. A girl that was thought to have the devil in her is buried here. Along with the paint there are other signs of vandalism and litter prompting officials to place two huge boulders over the entrance and step up patrols by the County Sheriffs. On County Road 675 (Thomas Road) about a ½ mile south of Crybaby Bridge.
