Cry Baby Woods
Way on back in the 1800’s a young women was running away from slave hunters. She had her young baby with her. The baby kept crying and she drowned the baby in a creek so he wouldn’t give her away. Today if you go back into the woods at night you can hear and sometimes see the little baby crying and looking for his mother.

Wow, this is funny I found this page. For the past few years I’ve been going to ‘cry baby bridge’ in ‘podunk indiana’ A.K.A Bargersville … a town a little south of greenwood. Just goes to show that this is just a myth, after reading this I’ve seen about 6 different towns in Indy listed as where the real story happens. I guess everyone has a podunk!

I grew up very near cry baby bridge in Hancock county. The story actually started (supposedly) with a car crash where the parents and baby drowned but they never found the baby. The story was morphed via “legend” tales, in one variant the woman stuffed the baby in a mason jar before throwing it over the bridge.
I went there once late at night and heard “something” that I couldn’t explain and it made the hair on my arms stand up. Wasn’t able to say out loud “Cry baby, cry!” as the story I was told would prompt the crying baby. Pretty freaky, sure it’s just a story like most, but it’s certainly creepy.
There is also a cemetery down the road back in the woods, frequented by people looking for ghosts and the like. There are also visits from some that involve animal mutilation – which adds to the freaky factor. My one late night visit there I didn’t see anything strange, but I could hear footsteps “following” me. I would never go back.
One more, local to hancock county – there is a slave graveyard in the middle of some old farmer’s woods that is rumored to be haunted. The deeper into the woods you go the older the headstones get. Went there twice, the second time there were dead cats hanging in some of the trees. That was the end of visiting that one. The new land owner doesn’t take kindly on visitors in his woods – understandably so at this point.
Anyway, thought I’d share my local experiences.

Many years ago i told my cousin the story of cry baby bridge. we lived in Morristown In. a mile south of Hancock county. I dont really know how I knew the story of the car crash and the drowning. in the version I told it was jan and the water was icy and the mother froze to death from hypothermia. i dont really understand how i came to tell her the story.strangley enough i was only in third grade. from an early age i always saw and felt strange things. (my belief is that they are demons) but i still think its strange that i knew of this story. I never went there and don’t plan to. i’ve experiened enough evil to last me a life time

Many years ago i told my cousin Kel the story of Cry baby Bridge. I don’t know how I stumbled on the story. TO my knowledge no one told me the story. Ironically i was in second or third grade when i told her the story of the car accident, although in my version it was Jan and they crashed because of ice on the road. The water was also icy and helped cause the death of the mother. Ever since i was little I’ve experienced many disturbing things. I don’t believe in ghosts. i did when i was younger. ( i believe that they are demons disguising themselves to confuse us) i will never go to this place. i’ve had enough evil encounters to last a lifetime.

i live in Anderson. i have a lot of friends who have gone to Cry Baby Bridge. if you go there at night you can hear a baby crying. some people have told me they have seen a woman in a white gown. there is also the Main Street Graveyard by it that is back in the woods, but we don’t call the woods Cry Baby Woods. you have to go on the bridge to hear or see the woman and the baby.

My friends and I drove over “Cry baby bridge” today twice & visited the cemetary. None of us felt anything *weird* but actually enjoyed the quiet. Strange? But there was that one thing…
