Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Dayton Lake Estates

Kenefick, Texas

Built in 1960 by a couple, this three story home is said to be rather strange. After catching her husband in the act with a neighbor, the wife murdered her husband and his mistress; the house was never completed. Though it is located on a riverbank that floods every year, the home has never sustained any water damage. It is said that if one goes to the room where the murders took place, his breathing will become labored. The stained glass windows of the home are also said to glow after midnight.

I have been to this house quite often and for a while conducted “tours” for my friends. It was tons of fun and it’s best to go at night. I haven’t been in a while…maybe I should go back one day.

The story is true about the murder. Though she wasn’t the one that killed him. He came home and find her cheating on him and he killed her and the guy, as well himself. I know this for a fact and if you go there you will see a chair outside of the road that leads to the house. Its a trail and not good for small vehicles to go down on. There is a real spirit there and its not quite friendly. I’ve been there and my mother was around when the murder happened when she was growing up. It happened in 1973. I can tell you one thing to do and it might freak you out. Knock the chair over, its where his wife use to sit and wait for the kids to come home from school at.

Brenda says:

September 10, 2007, 5:43 pm

Okay, I went looking for it. There were several places out there chairs next to the road. How far back in the area is it?

Mollie says:

October 9, 2007, 2:11 pm

I’ve been there a couple of times. Haven’t seen any ghosts yet or a chair at the end of the trail. I was there after midnight and couldn’t see the old broken stained glass windows glow. We went inside and the house is practically falling apart. It is very dangerous to go upstairs. The floors are rotten. The house is very hard to find. It is back in the forest and covered with trees and swamps when it rains. I got some of the local residents to take me. They new exactly where it was and thought it was funny that I asked to go there. We had to go by 4 X 4 vehicle. It was the only way to get back there. We weren’t very impressed but it was fun.

I use to hunt with a friend that has a deer lease in that area of Dayton Lake Est. Anywho, there are so many houses with chairs in the front driveway and a lot of old houses in the area due to floods and the amount of rain fall that the area gets in the fall and winter. So I was wondering if there is a way for someone to please post a specific address of the house, that would be great.

Mollie says:

October 29, 2007, 1:20 pm

I have a house out there and I will try to get an address but I don’t think it has one. It is back in the woods not on any particular road. Maybe at one time there was a road that ran back there. I will see what I can find out. I know it is off Trinity Rd. back in the woods on the main bumpy road thru the subdivision. After you enter the subdivision, go down a mile or 2 and it will be on the left hand side back in the woods. I think there is a sign about Dayton Lakes Estates chapel and a dead end sign nearby. But like I said before, you really need a 4 X 4 vehicle to get back there and I won’t walk because of the snakes, insects, poision ivy and such.

TexasJon says:

October 29, 2007, 7:53 pm

Mollie, thank you for the directions. I do want to check this place out. I will standby though and wait for an address or if you can give step-by-step directions/instructions. Again, thank you.

Mollie says:

November 12, 2007, 3:55 pm

I was out there this past weekend and couldn’t locate a street address but I know for sure that if after you find Dayton Lakes Estates, turn right on Trintiy Rd. You will go approx. 1/2 mile to a sign that says Dayton Lakes Chapel. At that sign turn left. This road you turn left on doesn’t have a name as far as I could tell. The house is back in those woods to the left just before you get to the Chapel. My husband walked back there since it was not too muddy and he said the house is extremely dangerous because the middle wall is collapsing into the floor which will cause the entire house to fall down when it does. He is in construction so he would know. So be careful if you go in there. Good luck finding it. That’s all the directions I can give.

that is a very creepy place. my family spent summer vacations on the river there, when it was nice, there used to be alot other families with summer camphouses there also, when there was a clubhouse, pool, nice parks, with pic-nic tables, and boat ramps. the local kids told us of such spooky tales. but now,do not go out there without someone you know and trust, or several someones. tell others also where ya’ll are going, so they can contact the authorities if you do not return as planned. it is not safe, not just the building and the terrain, but also there are many convicts, drug users, pedophiles, and just shady characters living out there. there is only one road in and one road out. cell phones do not work down there.

ruth c says:

i have a waterfront lot out there-have not been out there for 8 years-approximately what dollar amount could i get for this lot as we never use it anymore due to the roads or have things improved–are there any new houses and things—too far from town to get groceries

s.m.j. says:

January 19, 2009, 8:11 am

You can get to the nearest store/gas station in Kenefick in less than a half hour. If you are coming from Houston, that will be the last stopping place. The roads have not improved. There are a few homes that have been fixed up a little. There are many squatters out there, as so many dwellings have been abandoned. A 1/3 acre lot on the Trinity River would do well to fetch $5,000. There are new mini mansion subdivisions in or close to Kennefick, so this lends hope that maybe a developer will see the natural beauty of the area and improve things. The river has a nice white sandy beach, and petrified wood/river pebble sand bars. The several lakes out there should also make it attractive, a perfect place for the planned community it originally was. It just needs the roads and some low lying areas to be built up above flood level.

this is the only time i think i saw a real ghost. my girlfriend and i were going back to humble from kenefick. it was 3 or 4 am. we passed a general store where a dayton or kenefick police car sat with its lights off. the road im talking about will take you to 1960 and there is a sign at the beginning saying that there where a lot of deaths on the road and to be carefull. i was worried about the cop stopping me since it was so late and we were the only people on that dark road. about a half mile after passing the cop i saw a sight that sent chills up my spine. it was a lady with a black dress or gown on walking by herself. ive never seen anyone look as pale as she did and her eyes had no expression. i mean it was like she didnt know i was even there.there were things hanging from the sleeves of her dress like from both arms by her wrists. i knew she was a ghost when i saw her and i asked my girlfriend if she saw her and she said to please just keep driving. the whole thing was chilling. she was walking in the middle of nowhere in the pitch black road. it was like a corpse before makeup is applied. ive never seen anyone that white. well i didnt stop but ive always wanted to talk to the cop who also saw her. i say that because about 5 or 6 cop cars were going really fast to that location a couple minutes later. this was in 1991 or 1992. if anyone has iny info on this lady then id love to hear from you. john.

I used to live in Kenefick. I remember this this story. I have a friend that lived at the back of Dayton Lakes Estates. We went to school together and I spent the night at her house plenty of times when we were kids. I’ve never seen this place but know it’s there. When I return to my hometown, I may have to check it out. I always did want to see it.

jsl says:

May 26, 2010, 4:27 pm

You know, the story the guy wrote above about seeing some ghost lady on the side of the road in kenefick reminded me of something. In the early 90’s I worked in a covience store in the area, and the Kenefick officers would always come in and get coffee and tell me ghost stories of things they saw out there at night. One of the weird stories involved an officer driving down the road and a kid darted across the road and into the woods. The officer got out and looked for him and saw nothing. He gets in his car and gets called to an accident 5 miles down the road and when he arrives there it was the same kid that had ran infront of his car 5 mins. earlier and he was dead. They would always tell me stories like this phantom trucks, lets appearing behind their cars..etc. The funny thing was I never asked them anything they would come in and say, I saw the weirdest thing.

jsl says:

May 27, 2010, 2:48 am

In regards to the post about the lady walking along the side of the road in Kenefick, I use to work the night shift at this convience store in the mid 90s and the Kenefick Officers would come into coffee on their breaks. They would often tell me of strange things they would see out their at night. Such as phantom trucks, lights flashing behind there cars when they were hiding in their speed traps..etc. One officer told me this story about his superior who was on patrol one night. He said he was driving down 1008 and he saw a lil boy dart infront of his car. So he stopped and looked for the child but found nothing. He got back in his car and was called to an accident down the road. So about 3miles down the road he get’s there and in the road is the same little boy who had darted out infront of his car minutes earlier…dead from the accident. That story always would creep me out whenever I would drive down that road late at night.

ok, i live in dayton, i hung out with my friend in Dayton Lake Estates all the time, we’ve been through every abandoned house out there, night and day and there are no haunted houses out there, probably a rumor so if you wanna see some cool hauntings, dayton is not the place but if you hear of a real one lemme know so i can check it out =]

Kat says:

The Ott Hotel is haunted, they nicknamed the spirit Trench bc he wears a trench coat and hat. he possibly worked at the railroads. My aunts friend Ryan was washing dishes in the manager’s apartment with headphones when he turned and saw a “demon” and all he could do was cry for his mother. Another man James, a triplet that lived there with his brothers and his mother was manager, refused to go into the first room on the right up the front staircase. he never said what happened, but something scared him bad when he was in there cleaning with his mom once. Trench is usually seen upstairs by the back staircase. i’m the kat that commented on Dayton Lakes.

I owned a riverfront lot in Dayton Lakes for 19 yrs (’79-’98). I knew quite a few residents there and no one ever mentioned the haunted house. Too bad because I’m big into supernatural experiences. There’s no way that area can ever be improved with any home value to speak of because of its location in a natural flood area. You know what you’re getting into buying there and must deal with it. It’s a good weekend place if you like to fish the river and want to buy a lot with or without a small house (off the ground, of course!) You can’t beat the price! Lewis Lake also has great bass & crappie fishing. If buying and you want the highest ground, stay in the area after you make the right turn onto River Rd close to the entrance. Good luck and y’all keep those ghost stories coming!

Carolyn says:

September 10, 2010, 3:02 pm

the house in dayton lake estates i’ve been out there many times since halloween ive been exploring the grounds and looking the road called little rd is right in front of the church there is no sign. the rd looks like a driveway to the church but it is not it goes about 50 ft into the brush then ends into mud there is a house to the left of the church where the rd ends it is prety scary especially at night. i haven’t seen a 3 story house yet but i haven’t gone that far on to the property. i believe the house that everyone is talking about is there but u have to look. i had an odd experence while i was there i believe there are spirits there or something there while i was walikng and exploring the property i was walikng bake to my truck and out of nowhere a peice of briar about 3/4 of an ince hit me in the face, after i was hit i looked around and did not see any brisr around where i was at i don’t know where it came from i know it was briar because i had 4 thornes in my face that had broken off. i have taken pictures and posted them on unexplained tx they are pics of the chappel. little rd is on the left side of the chappel when u turn on the rd the sign to the chappel will be on your right. to get to the chappel comming from dayton follow the rd going to kenefick go through kenifick till you see a sign on the left pointing to the right that says dayton lake estates turn there and follow that rd way back in the woods approxmately 2-3 miles till you come to a blue house on right which is on a corner turn right at that house that is trinity rd there is no sign follow trinity rd about 1/2 mile to a white sign that says dayton lake chappel turn left at that sign go about 1/2 a block to the chappel it is on the left, there is a sign by the rd that says dayton lake chappel. if you go to unexplained tx and look at the pic titled dayton lake estates you will see a pic of the chappel

Carolyn says:

I’ve tracked all kinds of things down on this particular house, it still stands the owner of the property is Anton Polkner atleast that is what the Tax Office has down on paper. There is no way to contact him. I will be headed up there tomorrow to view the property and the house will be with Dayton Lake Estates City Council members. I will take pictures of the outside and possibly the inside and will post somewhere on this webpage. If you would like to contact me you can do so at (832)589-5452

This story is bull. I live literally right outside of dayton lake estates (the river bottoms.) My family used to go out there and fish and swim a few years ago before it was disgusting and whatnot. and i’ve been in a few abandoned houses out there. But that’s all they are, abandoned houses. But if you do intend to go out there, you do have the right to be afraid. there are meth labs, which of course means there are creepy meth heads. so you’ve been warned. and dayton’s really just a boring little town. i laughed when i started reading all of these peoples comments about how they have so many ghost stories placed in this town. i’ve lived here literally my whole life and the scariest thing i’ve heard of was the crazy lady that constantly walks up and down 1008. but trust me, she’s alive. she went to high school with my dad.

Kayla says:

I spent the day looking for this house. I found the chapel, walked straight back behind it found a swampy spot no house went a little further and found a tiny pull behind camper. decided we maybe went the wrong way so we turned around and took a trail like path kinda northwest i think, ended up finding something that looked like a barn but I’m pretty positive it wasn’t a house. went on another trail like path and came out to the road…. does this house really freakin exist???? i was so excited to find it, but instead i walked away with cuts all up and down my legs and bites everywhere. huge disappointment

Kayla says:

October 21, 2012, 5:33 pm

So me and my husband went back today. i thought not finding it was a disappointment but finding it was worse. its fallen down run down not safe not scary and a crock of ****. i took pictures inside and out, i guess kinda hoping something unexplained would show in them but no its just pictures of a fallen down house i wouldn’t even waste your time going there unless you want to be disappointed.

I owned property on the river bank in Dayton Lakes Estates from 1979 to 1998 and never once heard anything about this haunted house. I have the original brochure & map of Dayton Lakes showing all the lakes and roads and there is no Old Church Road on this map. Must have been just a road someone arbitrarily named it later.

Kayen says:

January 20, 2014, 3:28 am

While I would love to tell y’all this is true, I’m afraid I can’t. Yes the three story house is said to be haunted but y’all have the story all wrong. Nobody killed any cheating spouse. The reason the house was never finished is because the wife died of cancer and the husband (who was building it for her) ceased construction. As far as the stained glass window goes, thanks to a group of want to be thugs it is shattered beyond repair, but it really was a sight back in the day. Now there are pentagrams and **** all over because dang kids don’t have respect for those whos morn lost love long after they have lost their hold on life.

I used to have some friends down in Dayton Lake Estates that I used to hang out back in high school (2001-2005). I have been all over that area. Not sure how it is now, I haven’t been back there in about 7years. Me and a couple friends went out to that house Halloween of 2003 about 10-11pm. We found the house after a short walk from the road by the chapel. Yes it was run down and looked like it was about to fall. And this was 10+ years ago. There was nothing “haunted” about the place. Just old and run down. I have no idea if it still stands. I don’t even know if I would go back to the area anymore because I don’t know anyone down there now. The river front was great though. Beach was always clean.

And there is still a woman that walks up and down 1008 just about every day. I see her all the time. Not sure where she is going or where she is coming from but she is always right around the park when I pass her. This is mostly during the day. I have only seen her out after dark a few times in the last 10-15 years.
