Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Dayton Lake Estates

Kenefick, Texas

Built in 1960 by a couple, this three story home is said to be rather strange. After catching her husband in the act with a neighbor, the wife murdered her husband and his mistress; the house was never completed. Though it is located on a riverbank that floods every year, the home has never sustained any water damage. It is said that if one goes to the room where the murders took place, his breathing will become labored. The stained glass windows of the home are also said to glow after midnight.

I have been to this house quite often and for a while conducted “tours” for my friends. It was tons of fun and it’s best to go at night. I haven’t been in a while…maybe I should go back one day.

The story is true about the murder. Though she wasn’t the one that killed him. He came home and find her cheating on him and he killed her and the guy, as well himself. I know this for a fact and if you go there you will see a chair outside of the road that leads to the house. Its a trail and not good for small vehicles to go down on. There is a real spirit there and its not quite friendly. I’ve been there and my mother was around when the murder happened when she was growing up. It happened in 1973. I can tell you one thing to do and it might freak you out. Knock the chair over, its where his wife use to sit and wait for the kids to come home from school at.

Brenda says:

Okay, I went looking for it. There were several places out there chairs next to the road. How far back in the area is it?

Mollie says:

I’ve been there a couple of times. Haven’t seen any ghosts yet or a chair at the end of the trail. I was there after midnight and couldn’t see the old broken stained glass windows glow. We went inside and the house is practically falling apart. It is very dangerous to go upstairs. The floors are rotten. The house is very hard to find. It is back in the forest and covered with trees and swamps when it rains. I got some of the local residents to take me. They new exactly where it was and thought it was funny that I asked to go there. We had to go by 4 X 4 vehicle. It was the only way to get back there. We weren’t very impressed but it was fun.

I use to hunt with a friend that has a deer lease in that area of Dayton Lake Est. Anywho, there are so many houses with chairs in the front driveway and a lot of old houses in the area due to floods and the amount of rain fall that the area gets in the fall and winter. So I was wondering if there is a way for someone to please post a specific address of the house, that would be great.

Mollie says:

October 29, 2007, 1:20 pm

I have a house out there and I will try to get an address but I don’t think it has one. It is back in the woods not on any particular road. Maybe at one time there was a road that ran back there. I will see what I can find out. I know it is off Trinity Rd. back in the woods on the main bumpy road thru the subdivision. After you enter the subdivision, go down a mile or 2 and it will be on the left hand side back in the woods. I think there is a sign about Dayton Lakes Estates chapel and a dead end sign nearby. But like I said before, you really need a 4 X 4 vehicle to get back there and I won’t walk because of the snakes, insects, poision ivy and such.

Mollie, thank you for the directions. I do want to check this place out. I will standby though and wait for an address or if you can give step-by-step directions/instructions. Again, thank you.

Mollie says:

I was out there this past weekend and couldn’t locate a street address but I know for sure that if after you find Dayton Lakes Estates, turn right on Trintiy Rd. You will go approx. 1/2 mile to a sign that says Dayton Lakes Chapel. At that sign turn left. This road you turn left on doesn’t have a name as far as I could tell. The house is back in those woods to the left just before you get to the Chapel. My husband walked back there since it was not too muddy and he said the house is extremely dangerous because the middle wall is collapsing into the floor which will cause the entire house to fall down when it does. He is in construction so he would know. So be careful if you go in there. Good luck finding it. That’s all the directions I can give.

I’ve heard of this place before, though I had never heard any cause for it’s haunting.

Yes, the church is still there.

that is a very creepy place. my family spent summer vacations on the river there, when it was nice, there used to be alot other families with summer camphouses there also, when there was a clubhouse, pool, nice parks, with pic-nic tables, and boat ramps. the local kids told us of such spooky tales. but now,do not go out there without someone you know and trust, or several someones. tell others also where ya’ll are going, so they can contact the authorities if you do not return as planned. it is not safe, not just the building and the terrain, but also there are many convicts, drug users, pedophiles, and just shady characters living out there. there is only one road in and one road out. cell phones do not work down there.

i have a waterfront lot out there-have not been out there for 8 years-approximately what dollar amount could i get for this lot as we never use it anymore due to the roads or have things improved–are there any new houses and things—too far from town to get groceries

s.m.j. says:

January 19, 2009, 8:11 am

You can get to the nearest store/gas station in Kenefick in less than a half hour. If you are coming from Houston, that will be the last stopping place. The roads have not improved. There are a few homes that have been fixed up a little. There are many squatters out there, as so many dwellings have been abandoned. A 1/3 acre lot on the Trinity River would do well to fetch $5,000. There are new mini mansion subdivisions in or close to Kennefick, so this lends hope that maybe a developer will see the natural beauty of the area and improve things. The river has a nice white sandy beach, and petrified wood/river pebble sand bars. The several lakes out there should also make it attractive, a perfect place for the planned community it originally was. It just needs the roads and some low lying areas to be built up above flood level.

this is the only time i think i saw a real ghost. my girlfriend and i were going back to humble from kenefick. it was 3 or 4 am. we passed a general store where a dayton or kenefick police car sat with its lights off. the road im talking about will take you to 1960 and there is a sign at the beginning saying that there where a lot of deaths on the road and to be carefull. i was worried about the cop stopping me since it was so late and we were the only people on that dark road. about a half mile after passing the cop i saw a sight that sent chills up my spine. it was a lady with a black dress or gown on walking by herself. ive never seen anyone look as pale as she did and her eyes had no expression. i mean it was like she didnt know i was even there.there were things hanging from the sleeves of her dress like from both arms by her wrists. i knew she was a ghost when i saw her and i asked my girlfriend if she saw her and she said to please just keep driving. the whole thing was chilling. she was walking in the middle of nowhere in the pitch black road. it was like a corpse before makeup is applied. ive never seen anyone that white. well i didnt stop but ive always wanted to talk to the cop who also saw her. i say that because about 5 or 6 cop cars were going really fast to that location a couple minutes later. this was in 1991 or 1992. if anyone has iny info on this lady then id love to hear from you. john.
