Real Haunted House

Dead Children’s Playground

Huntsville, Alabama
By Robin Wright

Founded in 1822 and reaching over one hundred acres of land, Maple Hill Cemetery is the oldest and largest cemetery in Alabama. Within the cemetery limits, tucked away in a peaceful cove surrounded by a rock cliff on three sides and picturesque paths leading through the woods, is the Dead Childrenâ??s Playground. Admittedly beautiful during the day, when dusk falls, the atmosphere changes into something quite sinister.

Some say that the spirits of the dead children come to the playground to play. Another legend has it that Huntsville suffered a rash of child abductions in the 1960â??s, and sadly, the bodies of the children were found in the area of the playground. Since that time, there have been reports of swings moving on their own, children calling out, giggling, and when photos are taken, orbs of light believed to be the spirits of the children are captured. Much of this phenomenon occurs between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., far too late for any live child to be out playing.

The most eerie of reports is the common occurrence of swings moving rhythmically and in sync by themselves, even when the swings have just been brought to a complete stop. Some have seen dust from the sand that covers the area rise as if someone had jumped off a swing. Others who have taken photographs see circles of light show up on their photos, some of which are the same height as a child.

In fall of 2007, the City of Huntsville tried to take the playground over in order to further increase the area of the cemetery for graves and tombs. This was done literally overnight, one morning the playground was there and the next day all of the equipment was torn away and the area destroyed. The public outcry that resulted caused the City to pull the work order for the cemetery and new playground equipment was installed. This disturbance has not stopped the mysterious occurrences at the playground, however.

In January of 2008, The Alabama Paranormal Society investigated the area known locally as DCP. One of the investigators heard a voice of either a woman or female child. She quickly snapped a photo of the area and when it was developed, a misty figure of a woman can be made out. Many of the photos taken that night are littered with orbs.

Thanks to the citizens of Huntsville Alabama, children, dead and alive, will still have a place to play in Maple Hill Cemetery.

I went last night w/ my husband, sister & brother-in-law. Was definately creepy (especially walking up the road to it!) We got creeped out at first b/c there was 2 other groups already there. We talked to them for a few minutes and parted ways. We was the only group left and as soon as my flash light hit the swing set, both my husband and I saw a small figure walk from one side to the other (was about the height of a child and had light/white hair.) Then out of no where there was 2 men dressed in solid black and they were not moving at all. Every angle we shined the flash light on them…we could not see their face!! We took pictures and everything…and they were not in any of the pictures! And when we turned around to leave something was being thrown at us and was hitting this metal roof that covered some benchs we were at. But unfortunately as we were leaving we were confronted by the cops…and asked us to leave and that it was against the law to be up there at night and that a barracade was put up at night for a certain reason. But overall..pretty spooky and very fun!

For the past several years we have investigated several haunted places, with this “Dead Childrens Playground” being the best! I have many pics with orbs and when you zoom the pics in,you can see they are actual children.there was one photo I took as the swings started to move to and fro by theirselves. My brother sat in one of the swings and I took a photo of him and there were 3 orbs around him, one which looked like a child kneeling to pray and the other was in somewhat the “casper”.On the next photo, there was a face of a little girl her hair laying over her shoulder looking as if she appeared just for the photo. The 1st time I went to DCP… I was recovering from back surgery and wasnt able to run with the rest of our group,so I stayed behind and tried to hide in the darkness to wait on them and I heard what sounded like giggling.and kinda spooked me in a way that made me want to go back. so now we have made it a pact to go every year and it just gets better. anyone who has never been…I encourage you deeply to go. we have developed a paranormal group that we now call S.K.I.D.M.A.R.K.S. comical yes…but there is meaning behind it.Thanks for taking time to read this and Happy Haunting 😉

Me and my team went there on November 12, 2008 and it was definately creepy. It was a 100% full moon, and the weather was windy and stormy. It rained most of the time, but me and my friend watched the swing twist around by itself. we also got an evp of a jack in the box music playing in the background as one of my friends was going to swing by the swing that moved. We also heard growling, and when we played back our EVP recorder we have little yelps of children as well. It is definately a place to go that has activity. We will definately be going back when the weather isnt so disturbing.

going to dead childrens playground is really creepy. i hvae been many times and i get spooked just the same. i recomend you bring a flashlight and if you find your name on the playset you should get away from there, and dont return. i recently found my name on the playset two times, if you look up pictures of the playground you will see.

I have lived in HSV my whole life. The story about them finding bodies of children in the 60s is false. It is a very creepy place though. And a lot of the stories may come because of where it is located. It is behind Maple Hill Cemetery. It makes me think, WHY of all places would you put a playground there? Its totally secluded from the road. I’m not saying it isn’t haunted, Just wanted to clear up the rumors. Maybe the children buried in Maple Hill are the ones there playing. Its a nice thought. :)

I have been to dead childrens playground so many times its uncountable, we first started going when i was 13 and im now 28. We have experienced many things there. Swings moving to and fro with no wind and calm weather, the faint sound of childrens laughter traveling through the air. Its definetely an eerie feeling you get. I love it though.

I’ve been going to that playground ever since I was two, and I never heard of it being haunted until a couple months ago! Dad would take me there (when the old playground equipment was still standing) and I’d slide on the slide and swing, all the stuff you’d expect a kid to do. but you can climb this little mountain and find these really weird trails up on the plateau. The branches on the trees bend over so you have to crawl through them, and you easily lose which trail is which.I never really questioned Dad when he sudenly stopped bringing me there, I just thought he fogot or something. But I went back up with my frined a few weeks ago and got TOTALLY lost up on the mountain in those creepy trails. We ended up in that old baseball field instead of where my Dad was. And there were patches of mud all over the place, and the whole atomosphere was creepy. Dad says that I used to talk to “people” when I aws up there, even though it was just me and him, but I can’t remember. Now that I know about what’s been going on there though, I can go back and try to figure it all out. So thanks!

a few friends and i went up there tonight, two of whom did not believe in ghosts, spirits, anything of the sort. I have always been able to sense, see and feels spirits, and got an overwhelming feeling walking onto the playground. First, the temp dropped a good 20 degrees in the area of the swings. All of us, including the skeptics did hear giggles, laughter, whispers and actually a cry and a scream. We did sit on the swings, and the one next to me stat=rted to swing by itself. I felt there was a little girl right there. When two of us walked onto the other play equipment, we heard more laughter and a cry, i also saw a few small orbs on the edge of the woods. It was an awesome experience, and i plan to go again and investigate some more.

My family and I have been there many times. We love to go visit “the children”. We have had manny strange experiances there too. Once burger king bag moved as though someone was digging inside. and then it fell over. Also we have experianced the swings moving-not on a windy day. We hear laughter at night. I love it. I reccomend going there:] Oh and by the way, there is a statue in the cemetary that cries blood. Interesting i know.

After reading this article I need to make clear that the group that was mentioned is not a legit Paranormal group in Alabama with known to do things that have gotten them such a bad rap..,I would like to make somethings clear about Maple Hill and Childrens Cemetery, You can not do investigations there at night! They do not allow it and if they catch you they will arrest you for tresspassing,on that note you can do an investigation with permission from Maple Hill and can only do it during the day. However being there during the day theres too much noise that takes affect on the Childrens Playground, however did get some interesting things back on the cemetery. This past weekend we were up there during the cememtery stroll and learned some much needed history of the place and the hauntings that seem to go on. I so suggest that people do their homework before going over there and doing it by law..I also suggest that people need to check for legit groups and history before going to this place.

in nov2009 me 2friends an my 11yr old daughter went. we walked all around the graveyard befor we almost gave up an came back. but we did find it. as soon as we walked down to the swings i had to go back to the car for my camra. as i turn to walk back by myself, the guy that was with us started yelling at someone. someone or something was hiding under the slide. he came out alone. we ask what he was doing by himself at 1 am out there he said taking a walk. ok we talk for a minute more he walked on. haft 20 mintues i went on to get my camra. by the time i get it an start back there are my friends an daughter. there where worried with that man walking around. we sat down to get our breath. out of no where there is that man agin. he stoped looked to both sides of him (looking right at us but notlooking at us, like he didnt see all of us setting on the side of the road that goes through the graveyard) anyway we watched as he jogged up the little hill to the church. in the street light he just disappeared. gone we went up to the church an looked around. no one. we even drove around an couldnt see him agin. we went back to the playground an set an took pictures but nothing. all we said on the way home was how strange that was. the next day me an my daughterwas talking bout it. i ask her what she thought of the man? she said he was an angel! i ask “an angel? not a ghost?” she let me no real fast he was not a ghost. i ask if she was scared he he came out from under there, she said no. she would get alottle jumpy befor we found the playground walking through the graveyard, when the wind blew an the ballons an flags throughout the graveyard would blow with the wind she held on a little then but when we was standing there talking we the stranger she wasnt even holding my hand. so take it as you will she has been to the old bryce hospital with us an wasnt scared to go in it but when we went up to the nursing home part we walked up to the front doors to go in she pulled my hand back stoping me not wanting to go in there. she dont scare easy.
so was the stranger that night real? ghost? or just a man out for a walk at 1 am in nov.? may never no for sure i will be back

I grew up in Huntsville, but live in Chicago now, and when i was in high school we used to go up ther while skipping classes at Butler High.It was always a pretty creepy place, especially the trails and small caves surrounding the actual playground. While creepy as it was , or is, the only phenomena i ever witnessed was the icy cold temperature changes on or around the swing sets. Over all DCP is a fond memory for me, and i hope to move back to Huntsville one day and visit my old haunt.

I am from Huntsville, Alabama and have been to this playground several times as a teenager. There is something else about this playground that should be known so I am going to tell you. About 9 years ago a few of us went to the playground to test out a few things about the area to see if the rumors were true. Everything that has been said is All very true. Also if you are swings you might be pushed out of the swing or if you put babypowder on the back bumper of your vehicle in the parking lot sometimes you will see tiny finger prints left in the powder when you go to leave from there. It is very freaky. The old playground is still under the new and there are bodies buried all around the playground including a little boy on the cliff.

Brittany says:

March 25, 2010, 8:44 pm

I live in Huntsville, Alabama and about 9 years ago a few of us went to the playground and one of the things that was experienced was being pushed off of a swing in mid air and a complete stop. We decided to put some baby powder on the bumper of our vehicle in the playground parking lot to see if anything happened and it did. We went down to the playground for a while and when we went to leave we noticed tiny finger prints in the baby powder so the next time you really want to get the creeps, mabe you could try this too.

I have been to dead childrens playground on several occassions with friends and a couple of times alone. It is very creepy considering it is located next to a very large cemetary. I cannot say if the experiences all the other people on here are claiming to have had are true or not true, i can only speak to what i’ve experienced there and that is absolutely nothing. Everytime i have went i have not seen nor heard anything that would lead me to believe that the ghost of children haunt this playground. I believe it is a possibility but i just haven’t experienced anything there yet. I live approximately 20 minutes away from dead childrens and have friends who live on the same street that it is on within walking distance. I lived in a haunted house off Joe Lemmond road in Somerville, Alabama for a few years. After we moved out another family moved in but didn’t stay long and the house is still empty to this day. We experienced a strong feeling of being watched, sounds of footsteps in the house when you were home alone, dishes rattling at night, something laid down in the bed with my mom, she rolled over thinking it was my dad but there wasn’t anybody there when she looked. My dad felt something crawl across his legs and get out of the bed when he laid down. My mom would always keep my brothers bedroom door shut when she was home alone because she would hear things moving around in there but there wasn’t anybody in there. She said she was scared to be there by herself at times. Ater we moved out, the neighbors across the street asked us if we had experienced anything wierd while living there, they said the reason they were asking was because they were sitting on thier front porch one night and it sounded like somebody was walking on the leaves in the front yard but when they looked there wasn’t anybody there. The house was empty and nobody was living there. Believe it or not, it’s what we experienced while living there. To the skeptics who would say this was just fear getting the best of us, my mom didn’t believe in ghost and would be the first to tell you that they did not exist, but after living in that house she changed her mind. The whole time we lived in that house which was about 10 years we never spoke of it nor mentioned our fears to one another we just co-existed with whatever it was. It never tried to harm us nor scare us, it was just there. It wasn’t until sometime after we moved out of the house that we finally began to talk about it and my mother, the die hard skeptic was the first to say anything about it. I remeber her exact words, “I never believed in ghosts but i believe that there was something in that house”. Well thats my experience with the paranormal. Thanks for listening and thanks to this site for giving me a platform to tell it.

I would like to visit this place as I definitely have a taste for the super natural. Most of the nay sayers on here cant even write in complete sentences, so I don’t care too much what they think.Does anyone know what the play ground was originally built for? was it a playground that had a cemetery near it and the cemetery got larger? If they say there were many child abductions in the 1960s, well thats not that long ago, should be able to check records on that to find out for certain.I am just curious to why they would put a playground in the middle of a cemetery. That is weird.

@ C. Scum…youre right, half the people on here dont know what they are talking about. I live 20 min away.the story was just republished and so it goes…sometime in the 1900s are when the children were to have died..the legend is that there was a wild man who got a rusty knife OR axe…got on top of the rock wall in the playground and watched the children play..then he crept down and killed them all ..The murderer was never found. People say he skipped town…the first weird story was in the 1930s, a little boy climbed up on the rock wall and “something” pushed him to his death. There are MANY more stories that were reported… the park was built for children to play in as their parents walked the cemetary ,no other reason than that..
I,myself, love the place. i visit alot and ive had a couple strange experiences…I have a love for the paranormal also…hope this gave you some new info. :)

To Kat, Thank you very much for clearing up what seemed to be a muddled sea of rumors. I had read that these murders happened in the 1960s, well if that was the case it would still be a famous case.

As far as the Para normal goes, well I am agnostic so Im not sure what to believe about anything. However at a pretty young age I was introduced to what I think (Know in my heart) was pure evil. Without making a huge ghost story Ill just say at age 12 I was awoke in the middle of the night by voices, male and female. I dont remember what they were saying (I never did,but I assure you I was awake)and they/IT was taunting me so I sat up in bed shook my head to make sure I was awake and then said what? I remember one phrase Indian cushion, still have no idea what that means. But all of a sudden my body went stiff and I was flat of my back, colder than Id ever been and paralyzed. I cant say for how long but it seemed like eternity. As soon as I could move I ran like hell to where my parents room was.We lived in a Huge old farm house.I have no idea the history of it, but many people are afraid of living where someone has died. I can almost assure you, you do.No matter where you live probably someone throughout time has passed away there.I dont mean in that house I mean on those grounds. This happened to me a few times before it stopped. Not the whole ordeal but another time I was awoke by someone shouting my name in my ear and immediately the ice cold paralysis. So NO one can tell me that there is absolutely nothing here
but the living. That’s a closed minded ignorant attitude.
Just 5 years ago I was being awoken nightly by an incessant knocking. Sometimes 2 three raps real hard, sometimes banging like it was coming through the wall. The way my house is built no one can reach the wall in my bed room unless they were 30 ft tall.I mentioned it to a friend and said next time Im gonna say what the hell come in.Shes very religious and said absolutely not! Say unless youre of God go away and never return(or something like that) Im agnostic but I tried that anyway and it stopped. This Knocking had followed me from one house to this house and it stopped. So there is so much out there that people dont know about.
I heard the play ground was tore down once and the out cry from the public was so large they rebuilt it. Is this true? Im in TN and play in a traveling Rock band If we ever play Huntsville again I want to visit this playgroud at night. Also can anyone tell me who is Ivy Joe? Is this a spirit also?

no problem! There are so many rumors around about this place. SO many people twist the stories and make up so much stuff,it’s hard to know what to believe. But that is the true story according to the published.
Yes,they tore down the original playground equipment because soooo many ggangs go there at night to do drug deals…but then the public said that runners and parents still use the playground in the they brought in new equipment.which ticked me off personally and others also. The old equipment gave the place an even spookier was all old and people had wrote poems about the legend on the slides and such…
Wow, all of your experiences are unbelieveable…but i do believe it. People go through all kinds of stuff like that. I have never went through anything. Im not agnostic ..but im not religious. I hear creeks in my house and also footsteps, but i always ignore it. Even though im totally facsinated with paranormal, i still get creeped out. I dont live in an old house though. I dont think I could take it living in an old barn house where things like that happened.. Definetly take a look at the playground if you play in huntsville, what is your band name?
However I do not know who Ivy Joe is …:)

If anyone would like to actually visit this playground here are the directions: Take University drive in huntsville, which turns into Pratt, into 5 points, in 5 points, {known as this because it’s where 5 streets intersect at the traffic signal) at the traffic signal make a right onto andrew jackson way/kalifornia street. Keep going till you reach Maple Hill Cemetary on your right. At the traffic signal, after passing the cemetary make a left, cant remember the street name but its the first traffic signal after passing the very large cemetary, after making the left on this street it will be the first street to your left running behind the cemetary. You can only park and walk to the playground as they have a barricade. The road will dead end at the playground and be careful if you go at night cause the playground is in a cul-de-sac and you have to take steps down to it. Also be very careful and watch out for the po-po as they patrol it at night. If you get caught, the most that will happen though is that they will tell you to leave. Best thing to do is park down the street away from the cemetary and then walk to it. It will attract less attention. Also make an effort to be as quiet as possible. The less noise the better. You will be less likely to attract the attention of the police but that should be obvious. lol

David says:

July 6, 2010, 2:34 am

Oops, i said maple hill cemetary would be on your right, sorry, i meant it will be on your left if you are following these directions. Either way you cant miss it as it is a very large cemetary. Another legend is that you can climb to the top of the slide and stand there and you will fill someone trying to push you down the slide. I tried this and no, i never felt anyone trying to push me. Im not saying that it doesnt happen. I just didnt experience that. Whether it is haunted or not, it is a very creepy place to be at night and well worth the visit so check it out. I agree with kat that before they tore down the old playground equipment it had a much spookier ambience about it than it does now but will still give you the chills alone at night. The air does seem a bit cooller in the playground than in the area surrounding it. Dont know if this has something to do with the fact that it is located in a cul-de-sac or from the spirits of dead children or ghosts from the neighboring cemetary. You be the judge. Happy hunting. :+)

Back in 2002 a friend of mine were driving around and exploring. I was from Kansas and she was from Arizona and we didn’t know Alabama very well but were both on softball scholarships at AAMU (a local university). We just happened upon the back entrance of the cemetery which leads straight to the playground and at the time (I hear it’s been remodeled) had parking spaces. We thought it was eerie but cool and decided to go down in the ravine where there was a playground. We were running around and acting like two little girls even though we were both 18 at the time. We started swinging on the swing-set and she got scared and ran back up to the car to sit. I tried to play it off like I was bad ***, (even though I was a little scared)I didn’t want -whatever was there- to know they scared me so I stayed on my swing. I tried to focus on something to ease my mind. I could see her sitting in the car and I caught her swing out of the corner of my eye, which was right next to me, it wasn’t slowing down, it was speeding up even though she had jumped out and ran to the car. I thought to myself to stay calm and let my swing slow down to the point where I can walk off of it and walk up to the car. My swing started speeding up until they were “married” so I freaked a little bit and looked behind me because I thought I felt a push (a friendly one) and I heard giggling like whoever it was- was playing a trick. I tried to again act like nothing was going on and I’m sure outwardly I was as white as snow. I dragged my feet in the pebbles to slow my swing and I started walking “calmly to the car. I hear the giggling again and I ran as quickly as I could to the car. My friend and I were completely freaked but in unison that something happened and we went back again that Halloween 2002 with some more girls from the softball team. This place is definitely haunted but it’s neat.

There is an episode of “The X Files” in Season 7 called “Sein Und Zeit” in which Scully finds a childrens’ playground called Santa’s Village The owner/manager of the place had videotaped and then killed the children who went there and it is Mulder who discovers the graves. I think that the story line for this episode was inspired by the tragedy of the DCP.

Wow! So cool to see this up. I was at this playground about 2 years ago. I went with a couple of buddys of mine and we held hands and just sat in a circle we had outlined in the ground for about 3 hours. Well, I felt really weird but when I woke up the next day, I had cuts and bruises all over my body and I had developed a benign growth on my leg. It hadn´t been there before but that morning it was a big as a grapefruit! I went to the doctor and he told me it was probably just a side effect of the spirits that had taken over my body the night before. And the weirdest part? When my friends and I returned to the playground the next day to get our clothes we had left and to clean up the beer bottles we had smashed, we looked for the circle we had made, and it wasn´t there…Trust me, I´m never going back unless I can get REAL drunk beforehand.

It’s not blocked off I don’t know what you’re talking about. I went there last night with some friends and there was no gate or anything from the road we just drove right up into the park. However we were way too scared to get out after some really creepy stuff happened in the cemetery right next door prior. I didn’t see the swings or anything though, do you have to walk deep into the playground? All I saw was that litle hut thing with benches underneath I believe, and one lone bench to the left of that by some trees.

Cess says:

July 16, 2011, 6:44 am

I have been to DCP many times and i haven’t actually seen the swings move or heard children, not to say those rumors aren’t true. I have however had many strange feelings of a ‘presence’ of some sort, and I have seen a strange black figure standing in the small field to the right that looked like a tall man. This figure did not move the whole time my friends and I stared at it, so we assumed it was a weird shadow, however once we looked away for a few minutes and looked back it was gone. It could have been a spirit from the graveyard or some random person standing by the woods trying to scare a group of people. I’ve never taken a camera out there and I think next time I will just to see if I can get anything creepy(: I do advise however that if you’re going after dark to park in the church parking lot on mcclung street just past the cemetery and walk, because the cops LOVE to bust ghost hunting trespassers. Best of luck to anyone wanting a little paranormal thrill!

I used to visit dead childrens playground when i was in my teens with my friends i have had several experiences here myself. One was during the day we were just driving thru and we stopped to talk about our experiences and we had been sitting there for 20 minutes no wind. just a hot summer day and the swings were starting to swing by themselves. The second time we snuck in at night and we smelt baby powder and i reached out for my friend to take her hand because it was dark and i felt a childs hand in mine but there was nothing there. It is an excellent feeling knowing there is something out there because i believe there is!I have gotten one bad feeling here but the rest have been peaceful and i love the innocent feel of the playground.

Chris says:

December 10, 2011, 8:11 am

Me and the wife took our 14 and 9 year olds there in October 2010 to see if anything strange happened (since it was near Halloween). It was around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. I actually felt very at peace. I do however, believe in hauntings or haunted houses. We lived in one! One example was when I had opened the door to the refrigerator to get a jug of tea, I turned sharply to place the jug on the counter when for a split moment, there stood a young girl in a red dress. My children were standing, facing the direction I saw the aborition, but neither acted as if they had seen anything. I had been feeling as if something was in the house with us, but had never said anything because we had just bought the house and the wife and kids weren’t coming off like anything was unusual to them. A few days after my encounter with the young girl, my wife and I were sitting on the couch watching t.v. when my wife said to me, “I feel like we are not the only ones in this house”. I just smiled and said let me tell you what happened to me the other day and she said, ” no me first. I keep seeing someone looking at me through the window when I’m watching t.v. and I ffel like someone is with me in the bathroom when I’m taking a shower, but when I pull the curtains back, no one is there”. We sold the house about six months later and I always want to stop and ask the people who bought it if anything happens to them, but that’s just something that may make you look odd if nothing is happening to them so we just drive on by when we are down that way.

I live in Huntsville Alabama and as a little girl I used to go there all the time. for my thirteenth birthday, a few of my friends got together and sat directly in the center of the playground. we had a Ouija board and attempted to contact these ghost children. No one answered and everyone thought the legend of Dead Children’s Playground was a fake. We stayed until midnight though, and that’s when we started to believe. We were about to go back home and call it quits, when all of the sudden, our flashlights stopped working. I had a pair of new bateries that I put in, but to no avail. We lighted one of the black candles we had brought, and the flame turned a bright blue and went out. There was no wind, and yet the swings started rocking back and forth. We heard a little girl singing ring around the rosy. At first I thought it was my mother, who said she would pick us up at eleven-thirty, but she was nowhere to be found. The disturbances continued and my friend, who is terrified of anything supernatural, picked up the Ouija board and chucked it. It stopped in midair for two seconds, like it was being held, then dropped. At that moment, we all ran up the hill and went to the field next to the playground. We stayed there until our parents could pick us up. This is truly real.

Believe or not, it’s up to you but, I’m 51 and was raised in Huntsville, it’s my hometown. I also was raised about 5 blocks from Maple Hill Cemetery. I played in the graveyard MANY nights. There is also more to Maple Hill than DCP. I’m a child of the 60’s and I can tell you, there was no mass child nappings. The DCP has been around since before my time. Back in the 70’s (I think) a young lady and her boyfriend were there making out. She told her boyfriend she shouldn’t be out there because that’s where her mother was buried. Well, as they were making out, a headstone fell over and killed her, it was her mother’s headstone. There’s also the notable people buried there, the mausoleum that plays tricks on your mind and a few other tales. The last time I was there, there was no “fencing” per se but there is a low wall surrounding it (easily climbed over). My daughters have all went to DCP also. So yeah, believe what you will but those legends are true.

Me and some friends (there were 6 of us) decided that we wanted to go Ghost Hunting, and what better place than Dead Childrens Playground? It was late October, and it was a very calm night. We started walking down the many rows of tombstones, and at first it was eerily quite. It felt like there were eyes all over us, and that we were under constant observation. We were getting close to the playground, and we heard a scream, it sounded like a woman or child. After freaking out (cause this was not a muted scream, I mean it was LOUD) we got to the enterance where you walk up the hill to where the playground is. We all looked up there, and the amount of pitch black darkness engulfed us. Everyone of us let out an audible sigh preparation, and started our way up the never ending darkness. We took about 5 steps, and had to stop. One of the member of the group said, “Shhh! Listen!!!” And very clearly, you could hear something running down the hiil right at us. Needless to say we took off. It was obvious something was there, and didn’t want our company. We had almost reached the gates when a womans voice whispered in my ear, plain as ******* day, “Have you forgotten?” I tripped ****. Everyone was clearly shaken up, and was ready to get home. I think I’d go back…but I will NOT go up the hill, even if my life depended on it. Honestly, this isn’t bullshit. Just go up there, and something will happen. And hopefully nothing as violent as our experience. DO NOT GO ALONE!!! Happy huntin’!!!

Maple Hill is not the largest cemetery in Alabama. That title is held (probably) held by Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, which is over 4 times larger. While Maple Hill is old, the oldest gravestone in Madison County is in said to be Hobbs Cemetery, which contains just a handful of graves.

Good luck getting in HPD are real kill joys and have police staking out theplace so no one can get in. they actually sit in the dark and wait for people to show up then send them packing….pigs

Friend told me about this place the other day, and it’s ironic that you can find all kinds of information about the hauntings on the internet, but nothing on the abductions and killings that supposedly happened around 1960. Seems like with todays technology, there would be victims names listed and news reports listed somewhere, other than just the haunted aspect of this story.

Not sure if it is the oldest, but it is not the largest. Elmwood in Birmingham is over 400 acres, 4 times larger than Maple Hill.

Went tonight with my wife and 2 friends…. Police made us leave the playground so we drove thru the graveyard. We found a dark spot to park and got out to walk around and about 3 of every 5 graves where children ranging from stillborn to 7 years old!!!! As we walked thru one particular spot there was only a handful of graves they where almost all small children’s graves, as my wife came into the section she was literally punched in the nose. It’s been about and hour now and her right side of her nose is still red! She was hit hard enough to water her eyes and it scared her back into the car and I continued to look and I found a grave marker with a young girl named june….. My wife’s name is June

I’ve had many strange occurrences there over the years living only blocks from the playground and cemetery. It was late one afternoon in fall and the clouds were dreary and it had been drizzly that day. No wind just cold drizzle. After quickly eating I arose to leave when the swings began to move n squeak. The swings were moving in . Sync but opposite of one another. Te nice little merry go round slowly spinning an I could hear children’s giggles. Retreating to my car I learned it wouldn’t start. I had had no trouble before. being stick shift I was able to manual/ly jump push it off. As I drove down the hill in my review Morton mirror I say what looked like 3 small figures and one taller…this is but one story of the unusual occurrences have experienced there. It is well worth the visit but be warned the area closes after dark and it is illegal to be there after dark without city permission as is the cemetery.

Don’t stay there babies. Go to heaven. Born as a happy child in happy family in next life. R.I.P for every children who were killed/died by murder/torture/abuse.

I was there recently. A partner and I took radiation and EMF equipment and scanned the area, but recorded nothing beyond ambient levels, not did we hear or see anything paranormal. We did however get some pictures of a beautiful owl. Of course, the owls are not what they seem. 😉

My best friend and her boyfriend and myself all went last October. We got there and started walking down to the playground but heard knocks on the metal overhead thing above the benches. Ran back to the car and tried again. Heard more knocks so we got scared and ran back to the car again. This time my best friend left her car engine turned on and headlights shining on the playground so we could see because it was literally pitch black down there. We start walking from the car, get right passed the overhead and heard the loudest most eerie scream I’ve ever heard and the very second we heard the scream her car lights shut off….. I can’t tell you how terrified I was!!!!! Couldn’t tell if the scream was male or female adult or child but it was a scream straight from the playground and absolutely nobody was there but us. I don’t think we’ve ever ran so fast in our lives. I go every October but idk if I will go anymore after that. A few days later I end up tripping on acid with some friends and were riding around Huntsville that night with nothing to do, we had a dd. One friend has the bright idea to go dcp…………. Ended up going even though I’d warned them of what had just happened to me. We got there. I didn’t want to be the only one in the car so I walk down there with them, again, I am tripping on acid, start talking and thank god nothing creepy happened that night but I got the worst vibes I ever felt before. No way to describe the vibes I got there other than dark and evil. I don’t know how to really describe it but the feeling down in that playground felt all wrong and i felt so uneasy so we left. The cemetery wasn’t nearly as creepy as dcp

I hate burst the bubble here but there were no child abductions in the 60’s no children’s bones from abdicated children at the play ground. I’m from Huntsville, I was born in the 60!s I’ve been to the play ground, during the day. It is definitely strange to have a playground there, idk what may occur at night but this is a good story.
