Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Devil’s Road

Monmouth, Illinois

The road is marked by the sign of the devil–666–atop a dead end sign at the end of the street. Allegedly, the grim reaper stands in the middle of the road as cars approach. Just as the car is about to mow him over, the reaper vanishes into a puff of smoke. When the victims return the next day, burn marks tell exactly where the reaper appeared. Also on the road is Haunted Bridge. Legend says that young couple came around the curve too fast and fell of the bridge to a watery grave. It is alleged that if one stops his car on the bridge, he will be guided to safety. Bare footprints have been reported on rainy nights. Many others have also put powdered sugar on their car and reported hand prints after leaving the bridge.

There is one like this in Mascoutah, Illinois… except it’s railroad tracks.. supposively teens got killed by a train on these tracks, so if you park your car on them and put it in Nuetral..n then put baby powder or flour on your car, you will be pushed up the hill and there will be hand prints left on it… it’s also true.. it worked for alot of people i know.. i’m goin there tonight

for those of you wondering about the hauted tracks near mascoutah heres the scoop. there are no tracks at this spot that is said to be haunted they were removed in the early 90s when norfolk southern moved there major rail traffic north of mascoutah. well anyway im from rural mascoutah and have been to then (old tracks) many times
its not easy to find them at nite there hardly a bump in the road anymore since the county has resurfaced the crossing many times over the years the tracks are almost in someones driveway once you face south on the road that crosses the tracks your facing a house one house only so dont be supprised to see the homeowner come out and confront you it you are out there. well i guess now would be a good time to tell ya all where it is
……. heading west from mascoutah on il 177 you will travel about 3 milles on your left you will see and rentchler road head south on rentchler road untill you come to rentchler station road take a right drive that road untill it splits go with the side that dosing turn to gravel which is left one you make that left and are facing south you will see a slight rise in the road. drive over that rise completely you want your front bumper paralell to the dead end sign put you car in neutral and put flour on the rear of your car you will after some time if sitting in the vehicle you will feel something as if somone was jumping on your rear bumper and the car will begin to roll backwards toward the north and that all there is to it you realy do get forced over the old crossing but sckeptics say its from momentum cause by a slant in the road. look for your self theres no slant well i hope you guys enjoy checking it out its spooky. find it durring the day then come back at night to try it have fun

well thats funny you said that….iv lived in monmouth all my life n just this year i went down to that bridge….its called cry baby bridge…..me n my friends go donw there to get drunk and fool around wit ppls heads….its pretty funny to see ppl make fools of themselves cuz it doesnt work….the bridge is on a slant…..cuz its down hill….my friends like to fool around with ppl wearing masks and stuff and jumb on the back of ppls cars to scar them but its all just a joke…..iv heard many many stories about it but the one i believe the most is that there was this bus full of kids drivin home from school and they were goin to fast and feel into the bridge….ppl really dont know what happend…..but there is a real story about it….it happend to me and my friend….we were leaving the party from the bridge going up the hill and we turned left and we were goin down that road to go back to the highway to go home and we saw this lady riding on a bike….with cats….black cats…..cats just everywhere around her…..we have heard the story n i was driving n i was freakin out so i put the peddle all the way to the floor…..the story is that if you see that old lady riding her back….right when you go past her she will fall on her bike and get you to turn around and help you and when you do she will cut your throught…..so we went all the way around town to get back to the bridge to tell our friends about it n they didnt believe us….n we thought that one of them did it to freak ppl out but no one did…..so we showed them where she was and she was still laying there so everyone was getting spooked out and just kept going…..i cried all the way home!! so if you go their around the summer time or around halloween we will be there tryin to spook you out….even tho ppl know we do that they still get scared! peace out and have fun! NO DRINKING AND DRIVING! LOL

Wow, freaky. Just one question: who thought of putting baby powder or powdered sugar on their car? Did someone just decide, ‘hey, I’m going to cover my vehicle in sugar and drive down a haunted bridge’ ?

I went to Cry Baby Bridge this past weekend 1/28/06. Let me tell you it was something messed up. We got there and right at the point where the road becomes the bridge part, we put the car in Neutral. This bridge has like a 5% uphill grade to it, so there is a little uphill action. We were stopped in Neutral for like 5 seconds then we got a “bump” or “push” and we started rolling across the bridge. If there was a downhill slant to this bridge, we would have had a continual steady roll down the hill. But that’s not the case we got several noticeable “pushes” till we reached the other side of the bridge. We wanted to use the flour trick, but it was raining so that would have been dumb. I wish I could remember how to get out there, but I was with someone else who was driving.

yeah well i went to the bridge and didn’t know i was going to. i was passed out in the back seat on my 21st birthday on 09/05/05 and when everyone woke me up they were out of the car looking over the bridge pointing. i got out and stumbled over to see what they were looking at. we saw a bunch of dim lights but they weren’t fireflies. they were bigger and white light, not yellow, and u could see through the light. the more we talked, the more we saw. pretty soon, we heard the sound of a crying baby in the woods. i ran and got in the car but nobody else did. i got back out a few minutes later and walked around the front of the car with the headlights on and saw big sets of footprints and tiny baby footprints. i didn’t say anything and looked over to see if everyone had their shoes on and they did so i showed them. then they started yelling over the bridge and the lights came up toward us. the lights were about the size of a softball and dim. i got goosebumps and got in the car didn’t care what anyone else was doing. before we left, we put the car in neutral and felt a push and not only went across the bridge but up to the gravel road on the other side. the next day i looked at my bumper cuz my dad asked if someone was pushing my car. i saw big and tiny handprints all over the bumper and tiny fingerprints on the back window.

Cry baby bridge is about 1-2 miles North of Monmouth and IT IS REAL, no matter who believes me or who doesn’t I will remember it for the rest of my life. Three friends of mine and myself went to the bridge in the fall of `05, it was late probably 1:30am. We all got out and stood on the bridge for a while with the car parked on it and nothing happened. So, we decided to try and talk to ‘the spirits’, we started by yelling and asking them if they were okay and if anyone was there to give us a sign. As we started talking to them theese little lights started to appear in the trees, they almost looked like fireflys but it was way to cold outside for them and the lights never moved, they would stay in the same spots and go off and on as we talked to them, there were even some in the water. We heard a distinct cry come from the trees, but it was no human or dog, we will never be sure of what it was. The feeling on the bridge quickly went from warm to cold, we decided to turn on the headlights and look around for any thing we may find on the bridge, the bridge is all sand, like broken down gravel. And sure enouph there were tiny baby foot prints all over the bridge, and even some adult-sized foot prints but only a few, and there were circle inside circle marks by the big foot prints like from the bottom of a crutch. We had done the car in neuteral stunt when we first got there and it worked, but the bridge is at a slight downward slant. So, we decided to check the bumper for hand prints and there were tiny hand prints all over the thing! There was gravel dust on the bumper so we didn’t need baby powder or anything like that, and there were even a few big hand prints up higher on the back of the car. By this time we were already convinced about this place but my friends didn’t stop there. They kept yelling over the west side of the bridge asking them if they needed help and if there was anything we could do, and all the lights appeared again only more and more the longer we stood there and the more we yelled. Pretty soon the woods looked like tiny X-mas trees, but we kept talking to them. Then all at once it got very dark and all those little lights started rising up out of the trees as more were appearing and they all started to swirl in what seemed to be the direction for us! And we heard this noise like a huge rock being dumped into the water, only it wasn’t the noise of it going in, it was the noise of it coming back out right for us and all around us it felt, and sounded like 20 people running on the bridge. And just for a moment I felt lost, like there were all theese people around me and I couldn’t find my friends that were standing right next to me. It all happened so quick, it was very confusing at first But we all jumped in the car and took off as fast as we could.

i have been to cry baby bridge myself and the legend was as stated we parked the car in the middle of the bridge and turned it off put the powder on the trunk of the car and put the car in neutral the car was pushed off forward off the bridge. there were hand prints on the trunk of the car. so we turned around and tried it the other way and yet again the car was pushed forward off the bridge. was really neat. as for the grim reaper we never saw it but you know i believe it could happen.

I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble, but several intersections of streets and railroads that supposedly have “guardian ghosts” that push you out of harm’s way have been debunked. First of all, the road leading to the tracks is usually on a downhill incline, but since the railroads sit higher it gives the illusion that you are going uphill. Second, the oil from your fingers and hand after shutting your trunk doesn’t get washed off by going through a car wash – you have to take a towel with soap and rub them off.

My advice – if you’re going to try to put baby powder on your trunk to see the prints, make sure you wipe off any residual prints of your own or anyone who has used your trunk first.

I do believe paranormal events can happen, but I think 9 times out of 10 there is a non-paranormal explanation for them.

I am from Monmouth, and this story is bunk. Every five years or so a new story is created about the bridge. The scariest thing about the bridge is that teenagers drink booze and drive there. Drinking and driving is stupid and scary.

Sean says:

July 11, 2006, 11:37 am

Oh, and another thing. As I stated earlier, I am from Monmouth, went to hich school there, and called it my home until after college. The whole haunted bridge thing (bogus) was created when the old haunted barn was burned to the ground by a farmer. There was an old barn (just up the hill from the very unhaunted bridge) called “Buffords Barn”. High school students including myself would try to convince chicks to drive out there with us to they would be come scared and hopefully horney. We even stashed friends out there, would go into town to pick up chicks and drive them out there to have our friends scare them. Everyone used to go out there. Eventually the barn was a pile of junk and the farmer burned it down to make space for crops. Since then, teens needed a new scary thing so they came up with the whole bridge thing.

“”U.S. Route 491 is a north-south United States highway. One of the newest additions to the U.S. Highway system, it was commissioned in 2003 as a renumbering of U.S. Route 666 (an original 1926 route).”" IF ANYONE DOUBTS ME, GIVE ME EXACT DIRECTIONS TO THIS ROAD! I lived in Monmouth for 20 years, I also lived less than a mile from Cry baby bridge, the myth is completely untrue, First of all that road is not a dead end road in fact it can take you one of three directions, on leading past the house I grew up in and to a highway. The legend was not that of a couple but of a mother that had killed her baby and threw it into the creek that runs under the bridge(hence the name cry baby bridge) which I have also been cannoing in late at night. My friends and I have been on this bridge many of times in vehicles, on four wheelers you name it.There is nothing that goes on there, however I can see how people from out of town might conjuer things up to keep the legend going. Also if you really do want to go see what the attraction is all about keep in mind this is a dangerous road depending on which way you get to it the hill at the brige is very steep and if cars don’t go slow they can come up on you too fast if your sitting there too long. Another trick on the brige that people like to do which, I guess has only happend to me once all the other times it rolled the right way, if you sit in the middle of the brige with your car in neutral it’s said your car will be pushed the opposite direction of the slope your on, if it gets pused at all which it will REMEMBER IT’S BECAUSE YOU ARE ON A HILL!!! Go see it for yourself though, Monmouth is a small town but a great one and you may find more than you thought you would.

LaDana says:

October 30, 2006, 8:37 pm

Also whom ever posted the comment about the barn I remember that it wasn’t too far from the actually right?? I’m not sure I never went to it, but I do agree that they needed a new place to put the scary stories, by the way to the girl who said the bridge suddenly got cold, I thought it was already cold out that’s why you knew the lights weren’t firely”cause it was too cold”????Just a thought, oh and as for the fact that you got pushed to a gravel raod, ALL of it is gravel!!Also the brige is METAL not SAND!!Oh and one more thing PLEASE STOP DRINKING AND DRIVING THERE!!! What a stupid thing to do in the frist place then you bring a gravel road and water into it, not good, and never floor it on a gravel road your car will spin out!Feel free to email me with any questions
babygirl_az_8@hotmail.com just mark it cry baby bridge, thanks!!

Just to let everyone know the mark of 666 is not the mark of the devil but is indeed the mark of evil. In anchaint Rome (or some place over there) names were known only by numbers. Certain letters had certain numbers and when you would add them up that is how you were known. There was an empirer with the numbers adding up to 666 and he was a very mad empirerer, he sent people to their deaths for minor things and was just evil. That is where they got that saying.

im cant remember how many people have died on that road but it keeps increasing every 3 to 5 months. its a long and pretty much a strait road but ppl keep wipping themselves out on it and ppl go sooo slow its almost impossible. there was even a random person who lived by it and sleeptwalked in the middle of the road and got stuck and killed. many ghosts hav been seen from alot of ppl driving at night down there. i wonder if they got anythin to do with it.

Alright i too live and monmouth and im out to the bridge (cry baby) almost every night. Ive had weird things happen to me out there but not on the bridge, i always go to the timber surrounding the bridge.
For those of you needing directions here they are:
If you go into monmouth by mcdonalds, head north from the stop lights, you will see farm king up ahead, when you get to farm king go left on 210th avenue, go about 1 1/2 to 2 miles and it will be the first road to the right (its gravel and dont go to fast cause you will pass it when you go over a small hill) stay on that road and it will take you right to the bridge.
Like others say it doesn’t work all you people who put baby powder on your car and say thats there are little hand prints on there thats bull if you want to get scared out there then go on halloween me and my buddies will be out there to give ya a good scarin.
But honestly there is weird things out there, i was out there with my buddy and all the sudden we had a scream(like a full grown women scream) it came from down the creek where it bends (if your facin east) and by the time we could look at each other and ask what that was we heard it again and this time it was on the bridge…by the time my buddy turned his head to look at the bridge i was down the road and in the car! That aint no lie either you guys wanna go out there and walk around one night come on out you might see me out ther cuz like i said im always out there im goin out tonight to go see if i can get some of them spirits to talk to me and see if i can see those lights but this time im takin my video camera to see if i can recird any sounds out there.
if you have any more questions email me at scancy_27@hotmail.com p.s. buffords barn didnt burn down they tore it down and it was haunted a guy hung himself ther

Okay, this is obviously an URBAN LEGEND. It did actually happen several years ago, but it occured in Texas, and it was a school bus full of children that got stranded on a railroad track. Whether or not this incident took place somewhere else is highly unlikely. I live in Tucson, Arizona but I’m originally from Illinois, and I’ve been to Monmouth several times…and NEVER heard about anything like this. It’s a really neat story, but it’s obviously been blown out of porportion a little bit.

Elaine says:

February 24, 2007, 5:29 am

Oh, and to the person who’s referring to “Crybaby Bridge”, that’s actually located in Dublin, Indiana, in between Richmond and Indianapolis. This is another urban legend that no one has really been able to prove true or not! One rainy night, a woman and her infant son were driving across the bridge when the car lost control and went plunging into the water below.People say that late at night when you park on the bridge, you can hear the sounds of a woman crying, “Where, oh where has my baby gone?” This is because the police only found the woman’s body; her son’s body was never discovered, only a blue baby blanket.I did know a guy who went swimming in the creek a few years after this happened. Him and his buddies felt like someone was watching him, and they freaked out and made a quick getaway. But whether or not a similar incident took place in Monmouth? Like I said, highly doubtful. I’ve been through Monmouth before, several of my relatives have as well, and I’ve known people who’ve lived in the Monmouth area–and never heard of anything like this. No offense to anyone, but people really need to get their stories straight before they post them on here!

Just to let all of you know….Buford’s barn was supposedly haunted by a man who hung himself in it. I’m not sure if this is correct but that is what i’ve been told by several different people. As for cry baby bridge, I have been there a few times and it is pretty creepy. However nothing has ever happened to any car i was in or near. But at the time I was also told that both places were haunted and at that time the barn was still standing. So, therefore the ghost stories of the bridge did not come after the barn was burnt down. P.S. that damn barn was hella scary and when you were there at night when the moon was out it looked like you could see something swinging from the rafters!

I went 2 the bridge about 3 years ago and I did’nt c any grim reaper. It was scary cause I couldnt c when I was going down the hill. It was at like 12 at night and the hill was steep 2 go down. I could’nt even c the bottom. I put the flour on my car and put the car in nutral. It rolled like it was supposed 2. The bridge is at a small slant so u roll weather u r going 4ward or backward. I saw finger prints cause of the oils on ur hands when u open or shut the trunk. I m a firm believer and was disapointed cause it is a true story about a bus full of kids and all. I would like 2 go there again just 4 fun. My email is 1419x@att.net f any1 is interested.

Crybaby Bridge is a real place in monmouth, I should know, I grew up about a mile from it and my parents still live there to this day. If anyone from monmouth hasn’t heard of this place, its a small blue colored bridge that crosses over ceder creek, right next to the old Monmouth Rock Correy. Its located about 5 miles outside of the City limits. I grew up on the buferd barn and crybaby stories as a kid. I personnally have been down to that bridge hundereds of times as a kid, and have never witnessed anything. Most of the people that do, are
drunk teenage kids who go out there road tripped and looking to scare some buddies. I have researched in the monmouth library and have found nothing on anyone dying on or even near that bridge. As far as the bufards barn, his son never hung himself in that barn. It was just an old run down barn. A few kids had hung a noose from the rafters to try and make the story more realistic.
Both are just urban legends that the new and upcomming kids keep passing around.

I am a paranormal investigator and published author who lives in Monmouth and can absolutely guarantee that Crybaby Bridge is nothing more than a myth. I have conducted an investigation of the bridge and it is on an incline, explaining why cars roll across when put in neutral. Handprints appear on trunks of cars because it is on a gravel road, which leaves gravel dust on the car. The oil from your hands when closing the trunk leaves the shape of a handprint on the surface.

It is a popular destination for people who have been indulging and who imagine all kinds of bizarre things. There are places in and around Monmouth that are haunted. Crybaby Bridge isn’t one of them.

Pretty sure this sounds exactly like “Hells Road” in Dorsey Illinois. Except for the fact that at the end of the road, past the dead end, is an old, condemned church/farm house. I’m not sure which. My boyfriend has been down there, and he said it was pretty eerie, though nothing happened.

Also, if you are talking about Hells Road, you’re car ‘dies’ in the middle of the road; then, when you come back the next day, there’s supposedly a burn mark in the road. Or, as some call it, “The Mark of the Devil”.

If all this is true, and I very possibly believe it could be..leave these poor souls alone. Let them rest in peace. I personaly have went to this bridge and it is true the car will sit in Nuetral for a long period of time and then out of nowhere it will roll off of the bridge, at an incline (up hill). The bridge is at the bottom of 2 little hills, One side is a real steep sharp curve, the other is a short incline to an elbow turn which takes you right out on highway34. There is a creek about 20 ft wide runnin under it, There is a back road from lake story (Galesburg) to this bridge. The road is actually cool and you’d better not be goin fast because you can’t see the curve as you get up on it. and one more thing, the baby powder works, there will be handprints. Make sure everybody with you’s hands are accounted for when you get out of the car, you’ll freak, I did.

but…….
im still kinda suspicious about it.

TIP: before you guys go there, wash ur car first!!

It is all an urban legend. I went out there 9 years ago with the guy who is now my husband. I believe he heard Dwyer and Micheals talking about it. Absolutely nothing happened. I heard D.J.s talking about it on the radio today but of course it has changed to if you leave a candy bar on the bridge then one of the ghosts will come and take it. How can anyone possibly believe that? Yes, I know it’s all in fun. Just use your heads and don’t go out there drunk!! There is a sharp curve, be careful.

I’ve lived in monmouth all my life.I’ve been to cry baby bridge many times. One time we sat long enough in neutral, that we started to creep UPHILL real, real slow in neutral, we freaked out and slammed it into drive and to the floor. The story is a mother killed her baby and threw it over the bridge. What alot of people are missing is, the bridge is on a small hill your supposed to face uphill and be pushed uphill..
This is the first time I ever heard the 666 grim reaper..
Now Bufford’s Barn was way more frightening than any thing. It was on top of the hill heading north and to the right from cry baby bridge. The story I heard was the klu klux klan use the barn to hang people. Dont know but that was one freaky place, we all thought we were badasses, until it comes to Bufford’s Barn, we never could go out at nighttime, we went out in the daylight and was scared

In Febuary 2004 me my girlfriend and 3 friends took a trip to cry baby bridge. Were all from the area and have heard many different stories well let me tell you ours isn’t like any of the others. The whole road there gives you an eerie feeling so by time you get to the bridge your all ready on edge.I drove when I pulled up to the bridge I thought I put the car in neutral but I had put it in reverse.Nothing was happening so everyone started to laugh then simultanelusly everyone went quiet. My steering wheel started to shake and the car sounded like it was beeing ingulfed with water so I went to take off and noticed the car was in reverse I put it in neutral and the car flew across the bridge and continued up the road without me steering.I pulled towards the shoulder and turned around when I drove over the bridge the whole car was shaking. As soon as we got to town we pulled into the gas station thats were we noticed hand prints all over the car we made our way around and noticed two giant handprints dented in the hood and a pair of tiny ones too. After this we’ve attemted to go back a couple of times once a had a blessed rosary on my mirror and it broke right at the road the other time the road was blocked off.Believe what you want but I know its real……..

I lived just outside of Monmouth, IL. I’ve been there w/ friends many times, and most of those times, we were guided to safety. It’s a gravel road to the bridge, so your car will get dusty. We checked for dust on the trunk lid before we stopped on the bridge, there were no hand prints. We stopped on the bridge and the car was ‘pushed’ off the bridge to safety. When we stopped the car after we were off the bridge, we got out, looked, and there were now handprints. We’ve done this many times, and it is true. I’ve got specific related first-hand experiences to share if interested.

I’ve been to Cry Baby Bridge a few times. While I haven’t seen any light specters that some have mentioned, which I’ll have to check out next time I go, we have been pushed up the hill, with the car engine turned off. And it wasn’t subtle. But I have sat on top of the bridge. My friend fell off the bridge and landed somewhere near the river’s edge. And we used a Ouija board there (I don’t recall what was said). Other been being pushed up a hill, there wasn’t any extravagant paranormal activity.
