Real Haunted House

Devil’s Road

Monmouth, Illinois

The road is marked by the sign of the devil–666–atop a dead end sign at the end of the street. Allegedly, the grim reaper stands in the middle of the road as cars approach. Just as the car is about to mow him over, the reaper vanishes into a puff of smoke. When the victims return the next day, burn marks tell exactly where the reaper appeared. Also on the road is Haunted Bridge. Legend says that young couple came around the curve too fast and fell of the bridge to a watery grave. It is alleged that if one stops his car on the bridge, he will be guided to safety. Bare footprints have been reported on rainy nights. Many others have also put powdered sugar on their car and reported hand prints after leaving the bridge.

I can’t belive that happens. I’ve heard of Devil’s road but, I never heard that. I think this story is not trust worthy.

I am a paranormal investigator and published author who lives in Monmouth and can absolutely guarantee that Crybaby Bridge is nothing more than a myth. I have conducted an investigation of the bridge and it is on an incline, explaining why cars roll across when put in neutral. Handprints appear on trunks of cars because it is on a gravel road, which leaves gravel dust on the car. The oil from your hands when closing the trunk leaves the shape of a handprint on the surface.

It is a popular destination for people who have been indulging and who imagine all kinds of bizarre things. There are places in and around Monmouth that are haunted. Crybaby Bridge isn’t one of them.

Pretty sure this sounds exactly like “Hells Road” in Dorsey Illinois. Except for the fact that at the end of the road, past the dead end, is an old, condemned church/farm house. I’m not sure which. My boyfriend has been down there, and he said it was pretty eerie, though nothing happened.

Also, if you are talking about Hells Road, you’re car ‘dies’ in the middle of the road; then, when you come back the next day, there’s supposedly a burn mark in the road. Or, as some call it, “The Mark of the Devil”.

I went here one time, and left my car in park and left the keys on the dashboard. I left into the bushes, and my friend, Dyrikious (we are forighn, thank you) stayed and watched. We had previously put baby powder on the car, and we saw a shadowy creature. About 10 mins. later we went back to my car and saw f******* handprints! We were scared, so we left.

I’ve heard of something like that before. My parents told me about it a few years back. I can’t not believe in this stuff considering all the experiences they’ve had seeing ghosts and witnessing other strange events. My whole family claims to have seen odd things before. If anyone has seen the Mothman Prophecies, my uncle claims to have seen that exact ghost or whatever it could be called.

I’ve been to this road, and the ghosts are true. The ghosts are actually my friend’s great-grandparents. When I went there, there was actually writing in the powder that said ‘Tell Taylor we love her.’ And Taylor is my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s ****ing crazy!

If this is the story that was on Children of the Grave it is true. There were suppose to be in the 70’s people who sacrificed animals and did satanic things in the woods.

Hi I am a paranormal investigator/ paranormal psychic origionaly from the Quad City IL area. I am planing a trip back to my old stomping grounds in the late Fall and this story seems to have my attention. I am wondering if anyone can give me some more information about it. I need to know:

-the origional story
-adress of the location
-directions to the location
-other variations to the story differing from the origional.

If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Grace

I can be contacted at forgottenranks@aol.com thanks again.

Oh yeah, Barb- he uses the same sad stories in his books and doesn’t know how to tell a story on his tours unless it is Resurrection Mary. We’ve been on three of his “non-RM” tours… and over 3/4 of them are all about her. His books and tours suck.
