Real Haunted House

Devils Tramping Ground

Siler City, North Carolina

In these woods, there is a perfect circle in which no grass grows. Many have placed large stones inside the circle, only to find them gone the next day. It is said that at night the devil walks around the circle and thus moves everything outside the circle. In one report, a scout set up a tent in the middle of the circle and the next morning found the tent outside of it.

Alright looky here, Im from Pennsylvania, and in the region im in theres four or five different areas EXACTLY like this, I, like two of the other commenters, am a sensitive, and i can tell you, this place has NOTHING to do with the devil aside that its probably demon related meaning a person in a limbo like state who is more geared towards evil doings,
On the other hand, it may very well, like Ann said, have some biological or geographical explanation. if, for example, theres ground water beneath the spot and there has been for awhile, it’ll erode the spot into a rounded shape, but for the ring to exist there would have to be a different more dense type of rock surrounding this spot, which, geographically, would mean there was once a stream or river there, that happened to flow AROUND a fairly “weak” type of rock, an bring in new sediments to form a denser rock, which is, almost too perfect, but I don’t know the area so I can’t say for sure. I can say, however, that I’ll most definetly be driving the long way to the Outer Banks this year, so I can go check this out.

The Devil’s Stomping Ground is located near Asheboro. It used to be the location of an old salt mill. The area with no vegetation contains a high content of salt. The deer and other animals from the surrounding forrest use it as a giant salt lick. Studies have been done and have concluded that there is no paranormal activity any where near this area. The fear of the legend and the excitment of telling someone that something happened will continue to keep this legend alive longer than we are.

Being part Native American, not only am I tied to this state, I’m tied to this land. This place or these places are tied to the ancestors of this land and not to the Christian devil or demons.

My mother’s blood is Irish, and the sacred groves of trees are the same way… tied to the ancestors.

Even if you’re a sensitive… If it’s not in your blood… if you can’t feel the pulse…

A professor of mine was talking about how it was just this circle with a lot of trash everywhere in and around it (i suppose from the parties). She said nothing was really that unusual about it. What could have happened was a long time ago (too long for anybody to exactly remember) a round structure (perhaps a silo) sat on the spot. Something could have decayed, releasing something into the soil that killed the plants, and nobody ever took the time to make the soil fertile again. There are plenty of spots like that (like the above person mentioned). Also, there is a kind of fungus that starts growing, and spreads outwards in a nearly perfect circle. The fungus kills everything underneath it. Unless minerals and organic materials are added, the soil is infertile. So that could be another explanation.

back in the 40’s Gunther P Carsile poured his used motor oil on that spot

Okay, so if this story is “true”, wouldn’t you think that if the people that slept in the tent then woke up to find it out of the circle would have felt it being moved during the night?! I mean how could you even sleep during something like that? I don’t know about anyone else but if I was in a tent there I would definitly know if I was being moved or not. But yet not one person has commented about that. In my opinion, this story is false….

I live in Goldsboro, and my 16 year old son wants me to take him and his friends there for his birthday on October 28 just for kicks. Should I do it? I’m not really scared, but then again….Yikes! (Input or advice, please) Laura

I grew up at Harpers Cross Roads where the Devils Tramping Ground is.There is nothing there.I knew the family who owened the land.We used to ride horses all over that place and the flat woods down there.Years ago they put grass killer on the cycle so you could see it better.Yes all the teenagers used to party there some 20 years ago and maybe still do.There used to be some cool trees at the road that where bent up like horns. At night it is alittle spooky with knowing the story. The story goes like this….The Devil would come come down 1 path at midnight and walk the circleto think his problems out. Then just befor daybreak he would leave going down the other path.If you do go to stay the night there are are wild dogs out there so make sure to put your food up.Also watch out for snakes. When you get to Siler City you will take the Airport Road. You will go down it till you get to the The Devils Tramping Ground. If you come to Harpers Cross Roads which is a stop light and a gas station plus a couple of places to eat you have gone to far. Most people are friendly down there.Just ask them what they think about it.

The bottom line is this: If you don’t believe in any kind of witchcraft, evil, supernatral then you’re not going to believe in the legends of the devil’s tramping ground. If you do believe then you will feel it and believe it. I lived there my whole life and it was my escape from the world and i loved it and still do. Yes, I have seen some weird stuff but not all the time. It’s not a every day thing it’s not the gateway to hell or nothing, it’s like a place where spirits roam move on and come back. If you don’t beleive then shut up about it and don’t read nothing on it, don’t visit; don’t let it even cross your mind cause you’re to shallow to realize it’s meaning.
