The Duke’s House
Built in the 1920’s for a wealthy tobacco executive, this house was once the site of extremely lavish parties. People would get very drunk and then drive home. One night in 1927, it is said that a car carrying three young women and their driver ran off the Ashe Bridge, crashing onto the train tracks below. The three women and their driver died instantly-the latter being decapitated. It is said that the three women can still be seen on the “Duke’s” front porch, waiting for him to answer the door. The driver is said to still wander the tracks in search of his head.

I have lived in NC all my life and never ever heard this tale. I happen to be one who is very interested in hauntings and spirits, but I have no memory of this story. Are there any any records to prove this?

Is this true? I too have lived in NC all my life and I’m doing my senior Project on haunted places. I need to document some actual places, but I’m not going to waste gas for a something that doesn’t exist. Please let me know if you’ve ever ACTUALLY seen anything here… catcrazzy87@yahoo.com
Thanks,

Anyone interested in the paranormal, I am co founder of a local group in Fayetteville, North Carolina called NAM GHOST HUNTING SOCIETY. My partner and I are looking for some new members willing to go on investigations. We have already partially investigated the Vander Light haunting and are currently working on a new investigation at the Clarion Prince Charles Hotel. We still have to go back to with our equipment to Vander, but we did catch pictures of several orbs and ectoplasm. Our contact info is on our web site. http://www.namghs.com.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!!

I lived on Ashe for 25 years. The house is no longer there,it was located where the pullen lofts are now. They tore it down about 20 years ago to build those . I think it’s pretty cool

The Duke House in Myers Park in Charlotte is called White Oaks and it was haunted by the ghost of its former owner, Jon Avery who returned to meet his lover for at least two years after his death. They had planned to meet, after a decision to end their relationship, in one years time whether dead or alive, and to meet at 10 minutes to midnight. Mr Avery died and the young lady returned bringing a friend although she was unaware of his passing. At 10 to midnight nothing happened, but after a few minutes she heard soft footsteps ‘like a whisper’. He came towards her and passed through her, she heard his voice softly say “Dead or Alive”. Later she learned that his dying words were “Dead or alive? Will I make it?” She returned again a year later and he again appeared. After this she never returned to White Oaks and his spirit has not been seen since. this was before Dukes ownership of the mansion.

The house in question was probably the Cox-Wynne house. It was built in 1858 and was originally owned by William Boylan. In 1896, Gen. William Ruffin Cox bought the property (in fact, Cox Ave was created as an alternate entrance to the property). In the late 1800’s or early 1900’s, the Wynne family purchased the house. It was demolished in 1967.
The bridge is located on Ashe Ave, about a block north of Pullen Park. Anyone wanting to go there late at night should be more wary of running into a living person rather than a dead one.

Wait, so why do the girls wait at the door if they died in the car with the driver? Why would the ghost get split up. I believe this story, but something is definitely odd.
