This story is completely off and hilariously dramatic. First of all it is dungeness, not dungeon. Second of all, cumberland island is owned by the national park service, you have to go to St Marys GA to get there by ferry. You can camp and see the wild horses, and do all the camping stuff. The house was built by I think the rockefellers, maybe the vanderbilts. It was one of those well known ultra rich families from the turn of the century. They abandoned it because they didnt want to pay the newly installed property taxes. The house had been abandoned for years when it did burn down sometime in the fifties. Nobody died in the fire, now the house is just a shell that you can look at when you visit the island. Makes me wonder who the person was who wrote this.

This is not a true story. I live in St. Marys,Ga. which is the gateway to Cumberland Island.

HERE IS THE TRUE STORY!!! The true owner’s of the house were makers of an elixer that had made them millions of dollars. Their family name was “Spunkworthy”, an old welsh family. Their porduct was called “Ye old Spunkworthy’s Wack Off Cream”. and then their house burned down. My friend, Abu Saeed, says so.

JESSICA is a LIAR. It is on the State Park and she NEVER lived “next to it”…The state would NOT let anyone live next to a burnt down home that was on state owned land.

Maybe she meant to tell everyone that she got some **** next to it and suck some guy off in a tent (and their 4 friends too.) But one thing is for sure, SHE DID NOT LIVE THERE so don’t believe her.

Actually there are people that DO live next to Dungeoness at a place called The Grange.

I do believe the part where some people have said that the house did burn down once and that the people may have been rich. Though that **** about the family eating dinner and all these ghost. Come on.

This is not true. I’ve visited Cumberland Island for probably the last ten years, and there is no such haunting. Aside from that, that is NOT what really happened to that mansion.

The house was built as a vacation home by the Carnegie family. For what it’s worth, nobody died in the fire. The only one in the house was the butler, and he escaped. Besides, you’re forbidden to try to even GET into the house, it’s so old and ramshackle. And it IS Dungeness, not Dungeon.

This is most definitely not true. I have been to Cumberland Island myself, and like Amy said, what really happened was that it burned down, they tried to rebuild it, and it only burned down again. Nobody died, either. But, I’m not sure if this was just coincidence, but what did happen that was kinda freakish was that a family friend actually took a stone from the building because she couldn’t resist, and when she came back from vacation, her favorite dog(she had more than one) was gone! This is true, really.

I grew up in Savannah Ga and I believe this story refers to Bonaventure cemetary. I heard a simalar story told. I remember they had a hard time keeping kids out. I did check it out. I do belive you could hear glasses and party sounds on some nights. It was better from the water side. I have been to Cumberland many times. It is protected and only a small number of people are allowed at a time. I heard about no such story. There may have been some truth but I think the real plantation existed in Thunderbolt

I go to Cumberland at least twice every year and I’m even doing a project on it. This story is nowhere near being true. Here’s what happened: Thomas Carnegie, Andrew Carnegie’s brother, built a mansion on Cumberland for his wife and family. Thomas never got to see the finished product because he died a natural death away from the house. It was a summer house for the family. It was abandonded before it burnt down in 1959 because the family didn’t want to pay property taxes anymore. It was burnt down because a man wanted to hunt on the property, and was forbidden to. He was angry and burnt the house down but no one was in the home at the time… There is no ghosts in the house. Thats the true story…

As an earlier poster mentioned it is Dungeness not Dungeon, named after a European river. No it’s not haunted, no one “died” in a fire there. I am from South Georgia where the Golden Isles are located and am also a historian.
Dungeness for all its beauty, didn’t last very long. The grounds are part of an old plantation and as was mentioned it was built by members of the Carnegie family. The house was only used for part of the year and actually had a bit of a hum-drum existence as nothing major ever really happened (at least not in the ghost making sense) other than rich folks having fancy parties while on vaction.
The house was abandoned due to tax issues and unfortunately was destroyed by fire in the fifties.
Of course the funny thing is that now that someone has decided to “create” a haunting there it is already becoming urban legend…at least in this blog and after all isn’t that how many hauntings start!

The original house was built by Catherine Greene, the widow of Nathaniel Greene, that married Phineas Miller, the tutor of her children. The house burned and set in ruins until years later when Thomas Carnegie brought his wife, Lucy & their children to Cumberland and his wife fell in love with the island. They purchased most of the island & built Dungeness on the original foundation.

OK, I don’t want to tick anybody off, so… if someone really had died in that fire, why would the ghost need his old body? I believe in ghosts, and I am a christian, cause the bible talks about supernatural things human can’t see… but I do know that a ghost might not need his body… so who cares if the body is missing? Try finding a grave robber, not a spectrum…

Supposedly some Poachers were caught on the island earlier and told not to return back. The poachers came back later on when the Carnegie’s were out of town and the Mansion was set on fire. No one was killed and the Butler escaped.

This has nothing to do with Dungeoness Mansion, but I did have a strange occurrence on Cumberland Island back in January of this year. My girlfriend and I were camping at Stafford Beach. That night we were hanging out at the beach, and we saw a black figure down the beach racing straight towards us. It appeared to be the size of a large animal, and it almost seemed to be gliding rather than running. When it got about 20-50 yards away, it took a 90-degree turn and seemed to just disappear. It freaked us out because we had no explanation for what we saw. I’m not saying it was anything supernatural – most likely it was some kind of animal – but the way it moved and seemed to just vanish make me wonder. Anyone else experience something like this?

One of the most famous estates on the Georgia coast was Dungeness, owned by Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nathaniel Greene, who commanded the Southern Department of the war. While he owned Mulberry Grove Plantation near Savannah, he also planned to build a huge mansion on Cumberland Island near the site of Oglethorpe’s Dungeness hunting lodge. He died in 1786 before he was able to complete his plans. His wife, Catherine, remarried 10 years later to Phineas Miller, and they followed through on Greene’s designs, building a huge, four-story tabby mansion on top of an Indian shell mound. The mansion, with 6-foot thick walls at the base, featured four chimneys and 16 fireplaces, and was surround by 12 acres of gardens. Dungeness was the scene of many special social galas where statesmen and military leaders enjoyed the Millers’ hospitality. When the island was briefly occupied during the War of 1812, the British used Dungeness as their headquarters.
