Real Haunted House

Eldridge Hotel

Lawrence, Kansas

In the latter part of the 19th century, this building burned twice. During these fires, many died and today their spirits remain. There are numerous cold-spots throughout the home and lights also flash on and off.

Some of my friends and I stayed in the hotel one weekend and nothing out of the ordinary happened ya the lights may have flickered a few times but what do you expect its an old hotel. We were very happy with our stay and if anything even a little wierd would have happened we would have noticed I mean 12 high school girls staying there we would have noticed anything wierd.

I’ve been to the eldrige, and i have never seen or heard anything of that matter. I’m not sure if thats true. People may have died, but people do in and out of there all the time. I dont’ beleive it’s haunted

The Eldridge is in fact haunted. The entity that I encountered was downstairs in the ball room type area. He offered to show me south. After reading a little more about the history of the hotel I figured out that the area that is now this room used to be where the stage coaches pulled up to the hotel. Lawrence was a point where several old trails came together taking travelers west. The Eldridge was “the place” for the most up to date information on Indian attacks or information on wagon trains for the different wagon trails leaving the area. I discovered that one of the Eldridge boys held the job of meeting and gathering information from visitors coming through via his duties of greeting the guests in back of the hotel. This young man died in one of the attacks and I have always wondered if he was the gentleman that offered to show me the way. One other thing I noticed in this encounter was that the music in the background warped into really old time style victrola (sp?) sounding song even the tempo changed but after the short visit with this man the music went right back to the song that had been playing right before the encounter. I had not done any research on the hotel when I recorded this event. It was only after the fact that I did any research as to whom it may have been and it is just a guess as he didn’t give a name. The answer to the next question is yes I did record it and yes I still have it. He seemed like a very kind person that was just doing his job. I also asked some girls at the front desk if they had trouble getting and keeping staff. She looked puzzled and said no, though most of the help had experiences they had always been good experiences. She cited two times where the staff had been finishing up in a room and had pushed the vacuum to the door or the other time just outside the door of the room being finished. As the help closed the door to push the cart and vacuum to the next room she noticed the vacuum was gone. She opened up the door to grab it as she thought she must have not pushed it to the hall. It was already in the next room to be cleaned. I asked if maybe someone just moved it to help out without saying anything. She smiled and said well they had thought of that but the room it was in was locked. Lets see you have a very old building sitting on ground that had seen lots of human activity for the past 150 years, made of limestone or sitting on top of lime stone in the area, also less than a mile from a major river. I can’t think of a much better set up for a haunted location so if you are interested, it is worth the time. I would guess that most of the buildings downtown are haunted. You can walk the street late at night and encounter ghosts too as they are all over the area. Lots of blood was shed on those old dirt streets.

This is all a bunch of bull. I live in Lawrence and attend the University of Kansas. I have stayed at the Eldridge Hotel many times, upwards of four. Frankly, there is nothing haunted about the place, their restaurant is excellent (wonderful wine list) and they have superb staff. All of you have no idea what you are talking about.

I have a friend who works there and he showed me this..just go up to the front desk and ask to see the picture of the ghost. Sure enough! there is a picture that was taken of the lobby while no one else was there and in the elevator there is a shadow-like dark man figure standing there! chillllls! but yeah there is also a 4 page story list somebody made of the many happenings there by guests and workers, ask them also to see it! some KU students are just to smart like conner, guess he should just stick to being a nay sayer:)

I have actually had the chance to investigate paranormal at the hotel, in fact you can see me here… http://www.eldridgehotel.com/blog/2008/10/eldridge-ghost.html ……… I am sitting in the chair in room 6, and at the front desk when the picture of the worker is taken. We took more than pictures we also have great audio on the investigation. We found mostly stayed in the basement because of the amount of activity by the guests. The best spot in the hotel is in and around the liquor room. The exit door slams, and the light next to the room would randomly go out, and even when we would take the bulb out and put it back in it would not turn on. Later, without the light being changed it would again be on. I believe in this enough to go back and investigate many more times.

I stayed here for a night in 2004, as part of a haunted midwest tour some friends and I were doing. We didn’t see much on that tour, but we most certainly saw something here. When we walked into room 506, the two of us who went in first immediately saw an intense wavering of the air in the bedroom (as though the room were on fire). We most certainly saw the same thing, since my buddy described what he saw before I said anything and it matched my description perfectly. This wavering air then moved through the wall into the bathroom and continued through the next wall, out of the room. Nothing else happened, but none of us slept a wink that night after seeing that. It was unmistakable.

The Eldridge hotel certainly deserves more info than the puny paragraph on this site. The place is one of those haunted places that gets featured on TV and is a frequent attraction for ghost hunters.
