Excaliber Night Club

07.23.2005 | 12:32 pm | Chicago, Illinois, United States

The victims of both the Great Chicago Fire, and a shipwreck in Lake Michigan were brought here. Many employees and patrons of this club now see apparitions and other strange happenings in the lower level of the building, which is now a restaurant and arcade.

  1. I’ve heard about this from just about everyone, thing is though, NO ONE has actually seen anything.

  2. My sister used to work there back in the 90’s (back when the Bulls were good and used to have parties there.) She said she would always hear someone calling her name when noone was around. She also said that there are little statues that are mounted towards the ceiling that would move around and there was no way for anyone to get up to them.

  4. You want to know about haunted places in Chicago go on a tour. I did and had a blast. Plus you would find out that it wasn’t bodies from a ship wreck in Lake Michigan, it was bodies from a capsized boat “The Eastland” on the Chicago River.

  6. I have been to the Excaliber Night Club in the 1990’s and did not see or hear anything. The noise of the night club is too high for the ghosts and they prefer the comfortable family surroundings of their cementery.

  7. I seen a show on Sci-Fi about this place. There was a skeptic female and another guy looking for the ghost of Nat King Cole. Anyway according to the show the girl became possessed by a spirit that was watching over a little boy. Tell me think it could happen?

  8. This is for Rani. I’ve been on a certain ghost tour a few times when I’ve had a guest from out of town. It was a good tour of the history of Chicago, even if you don’t believe in ghosts. Just search for ghost tours, Chicago, and you should find what you’re looking for.

  12. The fire was in the late 1890’s. The shipwrecked boat which was on the Chicago River, happened in the early 1900’s. It was a company luncheon and there were families of the workers there, a total of 300. Everyone was on one side of the ship when it toppled over. The morgue was so overcrowded they had to take the bodies to Excalibur and the building which is now Harpo Studios,(Oprah’s studio). The ghosts can only be seen is the “red” room of Excalibur, which is a private lounge upstairs. There is a little girl that can be seen running around and giggling trying to get people’s attention.

  13. Sorry if the dates are screwed up, now that I realize it the fire was sometime in the 1880’s. But I know both incidents did not occur on the same day.

  14. I worked as a cocktail waitress at Excalibur in the late 1990’s. Several times a month I was a small, blonde, very pretty little girl wandering on the lower level. She was dressed in very old fashioned clothing and never answered when I would call to her. As I would try to approach her, she would wander away.

  17. Hey does anyone know if the Chicago Athletics Association is haunted. I just stayed there over the past weekend with my stepmom and it was a pretty wierd place. Nothing really exciting happened. It was really old looking and during the night the elevators were going nonstop, seriously. Those elevators creeped me out and I didn’t even see any other visitors in the whole building the whole weekend, so I couldn’t see why they would be going so much. Also I had to go up to our room on the 9th floor to get the baby’s carseat by myself and when I was trying to come back down the elevator doors wouldn’t open and the whole time I had a very uneasy feeling. It was also really could in the hallway on the 9th floor.

  20. The Eastland was a very real tragedy. It is known for certain that what is now Harpo Studios was used as a temporary morgue, but the building that is now Excalibur is usually mentioned as an afterthought as “may have also been used” as a temporary morgue.

  21. I’m born and raised in Chicago and have been to the Excaliber many times. The only thing that creeps me out is the LOOONG narrow staircase to the bathrooms the cold, musty ,dark basement (all of which can be fixed) and the one to the basthroom on the dark 3Rd floor, it’s just has a creepy layout and I think they keep those areas dark on purpose to keep this story circulating, The place is old and musty and needs to be totally remodeled. The carpeted area smell.

  22. i remember one night when i felt a slight gush of air behind me and someone touching my back. . . come to find out it was a 6′4″ woman with a huge adams apple. the only thing frightening about Excaliber is the amount of touchy-feely transvestites who frequent the joint now. i think they may have scared all of the ghosts over to the chop house. at least they can get a decent bottle of wine there.

  24. I know there have been many speculations about Excalibur being haunted, as a former Chicago Resident and a “Sensitive” to paranormal prescense, I would have to believe in these speculations. I visited Excalibur on four occasions. The First occasion, in 2000, I was in the balcony area with a group of friends and I lokked across from our group toward the balcony on the other side and I seen a young gentleman standing there, still, he was in “old” attire and looked at me with a blank expression. I remember thinking, No one dresses like that anymore and when I looked again he was gone. Again in 2002 I was on the main floor with my boyfriend, along the dance floor, and I looked up toward the balcony where I had seen the man previously and to my surprise he was their, still standing, blank look, this time he put a pocket watch into his pocket and then vanished. I think when people do go to this club they are there to “party it Up” They do not have their guards down and are not in the mind set to allow the apparitions to be seen.
