Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Fayetteville Women’s Club

Fayetteville, North Carolina

During the Civil War, this house was inhabited by a young lady and her lover. As the Union Army was fast approaching, the two tried to escape through a tunnel that led to the Cape Fear River. The tunnel, however, was blown up. It is said that the house is now haunted by the couple. It is reported that the Lady in Black appears on the stair case of the three story house on many occasions. Her lover is said to go into the apartments that are rented out and watch television with the tenants. It is said that people see the imprint of a body in the couches or chairs that are near the television. It is said that if he does not like what show they are watching, he will change the channel.

Anyone interested in the paranormal, I am co founder of a local group in Fayetteville, North Carolina called NAM GHOST HUNTING SOCIETY. My partner and I are looking for some new members willing to go on investigations. We have already partially investigated the Vander Light haunting and are currently working on a new investigation at the Clarion Prince Charles Hotel. We still have to go back to with our equipment to Vander, but we did catch pictures of several orbs and ectoplasm. Our contact info is on our web site. http://www.namghs.com.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!!

Hey guys! Lighten up a little, would you? It’s just a story, and even if it’s true (who knows? Could be…), the writer is only telling it as he/she knows it. Either way, it’s pretty creepy, and it’s rather amusing about the whole changing the channel thing. If I were a ghost (especially if I lived a long time ago), I’d probably watch tv too, and would most likely change the channel to one that I liked. 😛

“This is so so stuipid. Ghosts do not watch tv. I should know i live in a haunted house.” -Kayli

What exactly makes you think your ghost are NOT watching tv with you? How would you know if they were or were not? Are they telling you they aren’t?
Well, unless they are, I think the ‘this is so so stupid’ comments are unnessasary, don’t you? What IS stupid are people who say things are stupid that they apparently know NOTHING about! :o)
Now, from someone who DOES know a bit about the paranormal-(uh, that would be me)-let me just suggest to the naysayers in here that YES, it is highly possible for a paranormal presence to interfere with electrical appliances, such as a tv.
(Please note that I am NOT saying this particular story is or is not true–I don’t know that, okay?)
What I do know is that it is theorized in the paranormal community that ‘spirits’ are actually electrical energy–the energy left behind by a person when he/she dies.
So, is it not probable that if a ‘ghost’ is made up of electrical energy, that it MIGHT be possible for one to…i don’t know–maybe change channels on a tv?!?! :o/
Oh yeah, btw–just because the peeps who wrote this story say the ghost is ‘watching’ tv with them, does not mean to say they believe the ghost is actually sittin there side by side, munchin on popcorn and WATCHING a show with them…jeeze, where is ya’lls sense of humors!?!? Prolly was their way of ‘cuting up’ the story. In all likelyhood that is just their way of explaining what happens when the tv changes channels for no apparent reason.
Let’s say someone has an alleged ghost in their home and their fridge door opens all the time by itself, wouldn’t you think they might ‘explain’ this by saying something like, “Oh well–I guess our ghost is hungry again.”–thats not saying they think their ghost is actually EATING their food, for cryin out loud, is it… *rolls eyes*
One of the first things i’d suggest the peeps who wrote this story do before ruling it an actual haunting, would be to change the batts in the remote, which CAN cause a tv to change channels of it’s own accord.
One more ‘btw’–I personally lived in a haunted house myself years ago, and while the tv’s there never changed channels unassisted, I most certainly can’t say that our ghost(s) did or did not ‘watch tv’ with us…I would NEVER assume to know such things as a fact simply cuz I DON’T know for a fact one way or the other…It’s called being OPEN MINDED, people! Try it sometime! :o)
Unless you have 100%-no-doubt-about-it evidence or proof of what a ghost can or can’t do–(of if they do or do not exist for that matter)–then PLEASE,do not EVER say YOU KNOW something for a fact because YOU do not! Unless you are God, there’s simply no way you could….

BRAVO FOR YOU, MEL! You took the words right outta my mouth. I couldn’t have said it any better. None of us are stupid for believing in something that isn’t proven, but experienced by few. Whose to say if it is or isn’t true? I don’t know, I lean towards TRUE, although I haven’t actually seen a ghost, but have had unexplained things to happen to me throughout my 43 years of life. Thanks Mel, for your comment. I totally agree with you. Laura

Ok the people who are commenting saying – “oh this is stupid” “I dont believe in ghosts” “People who believe this stuff are stupid” and anything along those lines – If this is the way you feel (which is fine i mean everyone can have their own opinions) WHY ARE YOU READING A GHOST/HAUNTING WEBSITE? I dont think i BELIEVE in ghosts but I think the stories are interesting. Even though I dont believe doesnt mean I’m going to look at these websites and be like “UR STUPID!! EVERYONE’S STUPID. etc.” Oh and to the person who’s like “I love someone and they dont love me back what do i do?” WHO CARES? this is a ghost/haunting website. Why on earth would even put that on this site?!?!? SOmetimes people are so ignorant. Come on people, lets be mature!

Look, if you dont believe in this, then why in the hell are you at this website??? Why don’t YOU go get a life, instead of wasting YOUR time here, bashing people’s decisions. It’s not a waste of time to them, and people can be “IN TO” whatever the hell they want to, and the entire thing being “bull ****” is simply YOUR opinion, which nobody asked for, so shut the hell up. I have heard SEVERAL occurrances of spirits effecting electronic equipment, and some spirits were people once too, so why the hell wouldn’t it decide whatever was on the TV was idiotic, and change the channel? Even dead people hate Barney. Die in a fire.

This story sounded mildly true untill:

“Her lover is said to go into the apartments that are rented out and watch television with the tenants. It is said that people see the imprint of a body in the couches or chairs that are near the television. It is said that if he does not like what show they are watching, he will change the channel.”

That cracked me up. Now freaked me out.

One of my close friends that attends college with me is from Fayetteville. We were talking about ghosts and ghosts stories and she mentioned this and how she played the “Lady in Black” during a halloween haunted house at this certain place. She experienced paranormal activity.

She said that she heard footsteps comming down the stairs and all the lights went off. She hid in the bathroom and she thinks the Lady in Black locked her in momentarily. To this day she is still swears it was the Lady in Black and she dislikes the spirit.

You don’t change a man’s tv channel without asking! That’s probably how he died in the first place. This same ghost came to my house during Superbowl and changed the channel. I told him if he wasn’t already dead, that I would make him into a ghost!

kellie says:

October 2, 2008, 10:43 pm

Actually, the story is partially true anyway. The house is found on Heritage Square in Fayetteville. The “Lady in Black” has been seen as recently as a year ago, appearing as a ball of light this time, not an actual woman. She’s written up in “Tar Heel Ghosts” if you’re interested.

The Civil War legend is also partially true. The tunnel is bricked over (first by a vault, then by another wall). The vault came into play when the house was used as a bank, and members of the Woman’s Club had to remove it in order to repair/restore the house due to water damage. I don’t know if the tunnel was blown up or not, but I know that no one I’ve talked to can say if it still open up on the Cape Fear River bank or not. I doubt that it does. We would probably hear the sounds of homeless people through the wall if it were true.

However, the couple doesn’t seem to haunt the house; only the woman seems to show up by touching club members shoulders during basement meetings. Or at least the “touchees” have assumed the “toucher” was a woman.

Now the bit about the apartments has credibility IF there were in fact televisions during WW II (41-45). I should know, but I don’t. The only time the house was used for apartments (dormitories actually) was during that war. It is possible that some of the women living in those dormitories DID report some phenomenon, but if they did I have yet to find it in the club’s archives.

So, Mel, the legends you’ve heard are in part true.

My oldest daughter was married at the Womens Club home several years ago. During the festivities, I went upstairs to find my youngest girl who loved to plunder. I found her in one of little used rooms checking things out. She asked me who the lady in the old long dress was. I had no idea what she was talking about and told her to come back downstairs to eat and quit fooling around. A couple of years later, I ran across an article about this house being haunted and it freaked me out. It suddenly dawned on me who my youngest was referring to when she asked about the woman in the old long dress. This was not my first experience with the paranormal. I will post a couple of more true stories later.

When I was a teen, we went out to see the much talked about Vander Light one dark night. I and two of my friends parked near the tracks and started walking (East, I seem to remember) and poked fun at each other for a good half mile or so. Seeing nothing, we got bored and sat down on the tracks and started banging on it with a rock. All of a sudden, a wierd light came on several hundred feet away. It started moving toward us pretty quick and we stood up and got a little freaked. It stopped about 25 yards away and we could not see anyone holding a light. The light was wierd looking with a sort of fuzzy brightness. We laid down on each side of the tracks, me on one side and my two pals on the other. The light then came right past us going in same direction we just came and then it disappeared. When I looked up at the light, I swore I saw a headless man. I jumped up screaming like a baby, and so did my pals. We never ran so fast in our lives back to the car. My pals said they saw the same thing. One boy was even throwing up he was so scared. We never spoke of this in school for fear of ridicule and never went back to those tracks.

Several years ago I worked for an electronics repair business in Fayetteville. One of the guys we hired was married with two small kids and he had just moved to town. They rented an old house somewhere South of town in the country. He would tell us stories about odd things going on in his home, like dishes crashing to the floor and doors opening and closing by themselves. We laughed and just thought he was smoking the wrong tobacco or something since he did have a rather odd personality (a good technician though). One day he came in and was sick looking. He told us he had to move out during the night and something really bad happened. We finally got the whole story….Seems he and his wife were awakened about 2:30 in the morning and both saw a womans apparition with flowing gown at the foot of the bed. They were too terrified to move until the ghostly figure finally moved off toward the hallway and disappeared. He said his wife got up and grabbed the kids and ran from the home into the yard. He followed and she demanded they leave at once and not come back. He was begging us at work to follow him out during the daylight hours to help retrieve their belongings (we could not leave our jobs, though). He quit work a week later and we never heard from him again. I dont think he liked Fayetteville too much after all that.

From the moment we pulled in the parking lot we all got a very erie feelin. As my friend and I walked up to the door we decided to see if it was unlocked a couple of shakes later the door wouldnt budge, the freaky thing is when my other friend decided to test the door out surprisingly she found it suddenly unlocked….we got freaked out and ran to the parking lot….MISTAKE#1…Deciding who was going to go inside the house we were all bs’n around lookin at the mansion…I swear on everything I looked up at the second story and saw a women in a black dress starring down at me! It freaked me out so bad it was like I was in the twilight zone it felt like we locked eyes forever!!!Tears just started pourin down my face,it was weird I wasnt crying bc I was scared I was in shock!!!!After that experience I’ve never retured back to that house!

When my husband was in the military we used to live at 100 Bradford Ave, an apartment complex right across from the mental insitutuin in old downtown Fayetteville, and a few houses down from the museum. From what I remember this building used to be a hospice for terminally ill patients, and during the civil war it was part of the arsenal and used also as a hospital.

Our apartment was definitely haunted. So haunted that I even saw my own cat that I unfortuantely had to put to sleep. On occassion, I would sit at my computer, writing away, get up to go to the kitchen for a snack, come back and find the computer unplugged. Go back to the kitchen just before paper towels were thrown down the hall way, rolling to my feet. I have always been connected to the spiritual realm and I thought this quite funny because the spirit in our apartment was a prankster. So I’d laugh, and then tell the spirit that it was funny but that I’d had enough of cleaning up after its messes and let it know that it was time to give me a break. I think it just wanted to be recognized once in awhile.

Well me and my friends played with a ouija board and we actually got something on it that we can understand what it is spelling and saying to us, well we would stand up cigs on the floor and they would just stand there and when we ask can u knock it over and it moves straight to yes so then in just few mins the cig starts moving back and forth in front of your eyes where then it falls over, while the other one is still standing until we tell it do move that one as well, and no no one is around this at all. It did several things and we got freezing cold when we ask could it touch one of us, that is some creepy mess, and yes it does work, it will spell out your name, age and everything, that creeps me out just a lil. But I do believe in ghost and I know that they are real, I have heard a lot of things and espically at night in my house that have come espically after playing with the ouija board. Would like to know what all has happen to others if u have played the board to. I know u have so come on with the storys. Thanks.

I’ve been going to that house since elementary school. I know somvede one that lived there. She’s 80 years old or so now. I lived on the same corner of the house, which was practically in my back yard. I’ve actually rested at times and even smoked a joint or two on the porch in front of the staircase. Even on the back porch of the guesthouse. Many days I done this late nights to see if any activity visible. Not once have I seen anything there.
