Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Fayetteville Women’s Club

Fayetteville, North Carolina

During the Civil War, this house was inhabited by a young lady and her lover. As the Union Army was fast approaching, the two tried to escape through a tunnel that led to the Cape Fear River. The tunnel, however, was blown up. It is said that the house is now haunted by the couple. It is reported that the Lady in Black appears on the stair case of the three story house on many occasions. Her lover is said to go into the apartments that are rented out and watch television with the tenants. It is said that people see the imprint of a body in the couches or chairs that are near the television. It is said that if he does not like what show they are watching, he will change the channel.

Look, if you dont believe in this, then why in the hell are you at this website??? Why don’t YOU go get a life, instead of wasting YOUR time here, bashing people’s decisions. It’s not a waste of time to them, and people can be “IN TO” whatever the hell they want to, and the entire thing being “bull ****” is simply YOUR opinion, which nobody asked for, so shut the hell up. I have heard SEVERAL occurrances of spirits effecting electronic equipment, and some spirits were people once too, so why the hell wouldn’t it decide whatever was on the TV was idiotic, and change the channel? Even dead people hate Barney. Die in a fire.

This story sounded mildly true untill:

“Her lover is said to go into the apartments that are rented out and watch television with the tenants. It is said that people see the imprint of a body in the couches or chairs that are near the television. It is said that if he does not like what show they are watching, he will change the channel.”

That cracked me up. Now freaked me out.

One of my close friends that attends college with me is from Fayetteville. We were talking about ghosts and ghosts stories and she mentioned this and how she played the “Lady in Black” during a halloween haunted house at this certain place. She experienced paranormal activity.

She said that she heard footsteps comming down the stairs and all the lights went off. She hid in the bathroom and she thinks the Lady in Black locked her in momentarily. To this day she is still swears it was the Lady in Black and she dislikes the spirit.

After studying the paranormal for a few years now, I have to admit I have came in contact with a few entities that were probably as dull as you idiots when they were alive. They’re just dead, stupid! not blind. They’ve probably been watching it longer than you have.

You don’t change a man’s tv channel without asking! That’s probably how he died in the first place. This same ghost came to my house during Superbowl and changed the channel. I told him if he wasn’t already dead, that I would make him into a ghost!

Actually, the story is partially true anyway. The house is found on Heritage Square in Fayetteville. The “Lady in Black” has been seen as recently as a year ago, appearing as a ball of light this time, not an actual woman. She’s written up in “Tar Heel Ghosts” if you’re interested.

The Civil War legend is also partially true. The tunnel is bricked over (first by a vault, then by another wall). The vault came into play when the house was used as a bank, and members of the Woman’s Club had to remove it in order to repair/restore the house due to water damage. I don’t know if the tunnel was blown up or not, but I know that no one I’ve talked to can say if it still open up on the Cape Fear River bank or not. I doubt that it does. We would probably hear the sounds of homeless people through the wall if it were true.

However, the couple doesn’t seem to haunt the house; only the woman seems to show up by touching club members shoulders during basement meetings. Or at least the “touchees” have assumed the “toucher” was a woman.

Now the bit about the apartments has credibility IF there were in fact televisions during WW II (41-45). I should know, but I don’t. The only time the house was used for apartments (dormitories actually) was during that war. It is possible that some of the women living in those dormitories DID report some phenomenon, but if they did I have yet to find it in the club’s archives.

So, Mel, the legends you’ve heard are in part true.

My oldest daughter was married at the Womens Club home several years ago. During the festivities, I went upstairs to find my youngest girl who loved to plunder. I found her in one of little used rooms checking things out. She asked me who the lady in the old long dress was. I had no idea what she was talking about and told her to come back downstairs to eat and quit fooling around. A couple of years later, I ran across an article about this house being haunted and it freaked me out. It suddenly dawned on me who my youngest was referring to when she asked about the woman in the old long dress. This was not my first experience with the paranormal. I will post a couple of more true stories later.

When I was a teen, we went out to see the much talked about Vander Light one dark night. I and two of my friends parked near the tracks and started walking (East, I seem to remember) and poked fun at each other for a good half mile or so. Seeing nothing, we got bored and sat down on the tracks and started banging on it with a rock. All of a sudden, a wierd light came on several hundred feet away. It started moving toward us pretty quick and we stood up and got a little freaked. It stopped about 25 yards away and we could not see anyone holding a light. The light was wierd looking with a sort of fuzzy brightness. We laid down on each side of the tracks, me on one side and my two pals on the other. The light then came right past us going in same direction we just came and then it disappeared. When I looked up at the light, I swore I saw a headless man. I jumped up screaming like a baby, and so did my pals. We never ran so fast in our lives back to the car. My pals said they saw the same thing. One boy was even throwing up he was so scared. We never spoke of this in school for fear of ridicule and never went back to those tracks.

Several years ago I worked for an electronics repair business in Fayetteville. One of the guys we hired was married with two small kids and he had just moved to town. They rented an old house somewhere South of town in the country. He would tell us stories about odd things going on in his home, like dishes crashing to the floor and doors opening and closing by themselves. We laughed and just thought he was smoking the wrong tobacco or something since he did have a rather odd personality (a good technician though). One day he came in and was sick looking. He told us he had to move out during the night and something really bad happened. We finally got the whole story….Seems he and his wife were awakened about 2:30 in the morning and both saw a womans apparition with flowing gown at the foot of the bed. They were too terrified to move until the ghostly figure finally moved off toward the hallway and disappeared. He said his wife got up and grabbed the kids and ran from the home into the yard. He followed and she demanded they leave at once and not come back. He was begging us at work to follow him out during the daylight hours to help retrieve their belongings (we could not leave our jobs, though). He quit work a week later and we never heard from him again. I dont think he liked Fayetteville too much after all that.
