Hey. I have been to this island. When I went I didn’t know it was haunted or about the stories but I could definately feel some weird presence in this place. It is on an island off of Boston Harbor (you can take a boat there) and it has all the old dungeons where the prisoners were kept. My friends and I thought we heard a woman screaming but then just laughed it off because we were scared. It is a great place to go you can get right down in all the old caves and cells. I definately recommend the experience. Even if you don’t believe me!

Hmm, well…of my opinions about ghosts, You should try and go as late as possible because a lot of the rooms are lighted and at the same time a lot of the halls are completely pitch black. Very Interesting place I’ll say. It is a descently big Island and it’s beautiful to see the land itself. Good stuff

The Lady in black fell in love with a confederate prisoner. When the war was over she made him promise to come back, he never did. She can still be seen walking on Georges Island looking towards the sea. Waiting for his return. Also there tunnels that run under the ocean from island to island!

I actually live in Hull, Mass and I can see Georges island. it was also said that because of the Lady in Black two guards in the prision went mad because they there dog went crazy, im assuming after seeing the lady in black, and u can still hear dogs barking and scratching the wall. it was also said that she snuck onto the island via boat from Hull where the elementary school is and people on the islands or boats and see her lurking underneath the school.(there is a big hill on the bottom is a railroad track thats where she was located.) Pretty Cool huh? Yah its a highlight of goin to Hull High School. :)

I grew up in Quincy, MA (right outside Boston). I went there with a friend who belonged to a local Yacht Club in a boat parade. I think it was 1978 (we were about 11 or 12). We took a tour of Fort Warren and the true story was told to us. Indeed, there was a woman who dressed like a man/guard in order to get onto the island to rescue her lover/husband. When she was caught, she was hanged. Her only request was that she be hanged in a dress, as a woman. They located a black dress for her (property of the warden’s wife) and hung her in it. There have been many credible witnesses, including workers and visitors alike who have reported seeing her. I myself did not see her. But, before the tour or any knowledge of this “legend”, I thought it was the creepiest place I had EVER been. You can tour the dungeons and it is so dark inside the fort, even on the brightest summer day. The minute I walked in there, I couldn’t wait to leave. I have never been back since. I even just took my kids to Boston in the summer of ’06 and we stayed right on Long Wharf where the boats go out to the islands. I wouldn’t take my children there and I am 38 now! If you are looking to get creeped out, this is the place to do it!

I live in Boston and every year I usually go to George’s Island with Family and Friends at least one time in the summer. I had no idea that the Ghost of the Lady in Black exist. Now I’m kind of creepy to go back and at the same time happy to now the story and look for adventure.

I went there last year before we moved here to Boston. I have a psychic gift. I saw a revolutionary ghost with one leg missing screaming for help. After that, I left the island. I didn’t want to run into other entities.

It is an island near Boston. You have to take a boat behind the Marriott at Long Wharf. It is about a 10-15 ride.

I went there twice. Once alone with my dad and my friend. and just today actually! Last time I did, I heard noises. Today I saw some weird things, but no actuall ghost and no lady and black. But I do beleive she is there and I do beleive those other people’s witnesses cuz that place must be REALLY haunted cuz all the prisoners that died there. And i went on the haunted battle ship 139 and more haunted places. Im sort of a ghost hunter :)

We went into an unlit hallway today under the rampart on the south side of the fort today. We definitely heard something like heavy footsteps in front of us and took pictures that have freaky looking orbs in them… could be dust, who knows. I just know I am not going back there.

I live close to Deer Island in Winthrop. When i was a child in the 70’s, we went to the islands with large groups of people from the Yacht Club. Back then, you could stay overnight on some islands without a problem. It is tough to tell whether i saw, felt or sensed anything, because the older teens would always try to spook us. something every generation did to the next. BUT! if you want to freak out, try walking the Deer Island walk path on a semi-foggy night. at the halfway point, you will stand numb fixed on the boston islands thinking of whether the lady in black, the ghost of boston light or the spirits of the Deer Island imprisoned indians are walking with you…………

I was there this past weekend (twice now) and it’s a lovely place to go on a summer’s day. You do need a flashlight to go exploring in the dark rooms and passageways and you can definitely feel a strangeness about the place. You can’t camp or stay the night and the last boat leaves at 6:00 pm.

The way the Story really goes is that there was a woman and she was from the south. Her husband was captured and brought there. She traveled north to try and help him escape. She found several people wh were sympathetic to her cause and they helped her sneak onto the island dressed as a man. During the escape she and her husband were cornered and she tried to shoot one of the guards but the pistol she was using misfired and killed her husband. After that she surrendered and was sentenced to death. She spent her remaining days there waiting to be hung. Her last request was to be hung in a dress. The only thing they could find for her was a black dress so that is what she was hing in. Now she haunts the place.
I have been there a couple time but have never seen anything however the place has a weird feeling to it almost sad.

the ghost there is the lady in red -the red mist phantom who roams the grounds around the light house waiting for a ship….I am a amature ghost-paranorm investigator by the way

But it was still a scary place to be. i remember i was with a group of tourists, and we was inside one of those castles, our flaslights always kept turning off and we would have to replace them with newer onces all the time…so i would have to say that there is SOME presence around there.

I went there as a child for a school field trip the story I heard from my mother before I went was something like this. In the 1800s a gentle man was captured during the war and his wife heard of this and decided to break him out or the fort she went there with a few rebels and armed with only a pistol.she set out one night thru under ground rail roads in hull ma. Were she then took a boat to georges island .During the breakin attempt one of the lieutenants heard of the escape attempt went to the dungeon to stop the rebels when the woman was cornered she pulled out her gun which jammed when she fired it killing herself. The legend my mother told me was the lady in black then walked the grounds of the fort from that day forward and if you see her death would come of you so she told if I see anything out of the ordinary not to look.I remember seeing a lot of weird things that day doors were their then they weren’t a fence on a hill when we climbed wasn’t there but was when we turned around etc. But never seeing the lady in black.when I returned home that day I asked my mom why she was so scared when I went there and she told me that when my uncle (who is deceased)went to georges island he came home scared out of his mind saying he saw the lady in black my grandmother told him he was crazy and then told her he fell into a hole in the fort which looked like they used it for lifting canons there were chains hanging in it aswell anyways when he fell he said he screamed for help a woman all dressed in black reached her hand down to pull him out he reached for her hand grabbed her by her wrist as she pulled him up he pulled some jewelry off of her a bracelet and 2 rings, when he got to his feet to thank her she was gone,my grand mother was shocked when he showed her the uncle david was killed in a car accident a week later.

I visited Fort Warren with my parent’s in 2000 and it was interesting trip since I read about the story of the woman in black. I asked a male who worked on the island about her and she told me that it was not even true.

I live in Boston and read about Fort Warren and its alleged ghosts. It sounded like a good way to spend a few hours so I decided to visit. I brought with me a head lamp and a digital camera not really knowing what to expect. The fort is huge, you could spend an entire day exploring every nook and corner of this place. Creepy is one way to describe this place. Most of the fort is very dark, I’m glad I brought the headlamp. The interior of the fort is a huge series of rooms connected by often pitch black hallways and stairs. I didn’t see anything spooky, but I didn’t venture into too many pitch black areas. If you’re going to explore the pitch black areas of this fort (there are a lot to explore) bring a headlamp and/or a flash light and don’t go alone. The whole place is erie, I don’t doubt for a second that the fort is haunted. Even walking around the partially lit areas, I found myself constantly looking over my shoulder and hearing strange sounds that seemed to come from nowhere.

It’s fairly easy to get here, from downtown Boston walk towards Boston Harbor. Next to the Long Wharf Marriot you can get tickets for the ferry. The ferry leaves every hour or so and takes about 25 minutes.

I went to Fort Warren/ Georges Island so many times i got used to it that i know my way around there soo much. but the storie about the lady in black is true because when i was 7 i got lost and i saw her. She was moaning in the corner of a doorway. I was really closed to her and she looked at me. When i blinked she was gone, but she appeared again when i romed the hallways again and this time i was lost. It is becaused she scared me soo much that i got out in time before any knew i was missing. so it’s like she kind of help me too. But be WARNED if u are a male and is lost u better not run into her because it is said that rigth after they killed her the men will go in a certain room and play cards but will never come back out!!!!! They were reported to be screams from the room. So she doesn’t like men too much.

I went there a few weeks ago and roamed around the whole fort. I didn’t have a flashlight or anything, so I didn’t go too far down the dark tunnels, but I took photos with my digital camera down them. In two different tunnels, I caught the same dark figures, but thought it was patterns on the walls. Then I zoomed in while looking at the photo later . . . one of the figures seemed to have a face (a man– there’s what looks like a mustache) and it was looking at me. It’s a pretty dark and grainy photo though. Don’t know if it’s for real, but I do believe in ghosts, the place had many soldiers die there, and yes, it was creepy! I definately want to go back with ghost hunting gear– wish I had a recorder with me that’s for sure!

I have a very close friend who is a ranger on George’s island. Giving tours of fort warren. There is NO historical evidence to support the story of “the Lady in Black” though there were a number of executions of confederate soldiers and the island(s) of boston harbor have been occupied by humans as far back as the mid 1600’s by colonialists and ever further back by the native peoples of the area. I am planning a trip out there very soon. I can’t wait.

I went there about 4 years ago with my girlfriend at the time we walked through one of the rooms neer the gunpowder shack, there was a lasts voice comming from the hall I followed it to nothing. Later on we found a little spot to crawl through I heard a noise that made my bone ache, it was some sort of screaming I took off. This was all before I found out it was haunted. A couple years later me and a buddy of mine went there to do some burnin and we scoured exert inch of that place even sitting in the dark rooms with the shackles we spent the whole day looking and found nothing. I think when your not searching you’ll find things, or maybe because I was with my girl and it sparked some sort of energy

I went to Georges Island not knowing anything about the “lady in black”. When we arrived there I was with my mom and cousins I looked up and there are the forts and on the roofs of them are grassy little hills. I saw a women looking like she was from some other time in a black dress on the top of the fort. She had a creepy stare and was looking down at us. I pointed up to show my mom and ask her what that lady was doing up there. My mom was totally freaked out and when we went to show my cousins she was gone. Very creepy

July 31, 2010, 9:24 pm

I just read through all of the posts. Some of them sound pretty creepy, others sound bogus.
I was at Fort Warren today with my 3.5 year old daughter. It was a beautiful sunny day. I did not go into the fort itself, since I was with her. I did, however, go through all of the bunkers and various “rooms” that were around the fort.
One of those “rooms” was pitch black. I did not have a flashlight, so keeping my daughter on the steps in the light, I stepped into the darkness and took a picture.
Holy Cow was I shocked. The picture had 2 large orbs, and like 3 small ones. I immediately took another picture, then got out of there. The second picture had several orbs too. In fact, one orb was very large, and was only slightly higher than the big orb from the last picture – as if it was floating upwards.
About 40 minutes later, I wanted to get a few more pics, so I went back down and took three more pictures. One pic had nothing, and the other two have a few very small orbs in the corners of the room.
Oh…each orb was in the back of the room, which is about 10-15 feet away from the doorway where I was.
I am totally freaked out. I have no plans on going back there anytime soon.

Eric LaVoie says:

August 2, 2010, 6:45 pm

Hello Allen, I am a paranormal researcher with over 20 years of experience. I also have taken many photos with orbs within them. However, please use some caution when documenting orbs. Although I also get very excited to see them in my photos we must ensure we analyze each photo very carefully. 99.9% percent of the time orbs are normal moister, dust or bugs orbs. Ok and how do I know this? I have analyzed hundreds of orb photos and I clearly understand what lighting and camera flash will do to photos. Allen lets take the photo that you took at Ft Warren. Were you moving around inside, maybe kicking up dust and moving the air around then took the photo. I’m going to guess the question is yes. So what happened, a digital camera flash sends out an IR beam for auto focus, lighting adjustments and distance of the object. Then that beam sends the information back to the camera and than the photo is taken. So now the first thing the camera identifies within the frame. It will focus on that object, over expose that object making it seem like it’s glowing (orb). These orbs are also very easy to identify. Try and use your computer software or photo edit program and try and blow that photo up. You will notice that the orb now looks like a series of rings like if you just cut a tree down and counted the rings. This orb will look just like those rings but glowing and have a misty look apperance.(Not a Ghost) Now if the orb is solid, colored or has a oblong shape to it. Than that’s paranormal and more interesting to look at and worth talking about. However still do not be scared because if this is the case than most likely it’s residual energy your capturing and not intelligent spirit. Residual energy is like a tape recorder making the same movements over and over with no reaction. Intelligent energy recognizes you and interacts with you. This would be very rare and hard to capture without the right equipment.
Well I hope this helps and I would love to see your photos, if you would like me to assist you and analyze them, please send them to my email address at
Thanks Eric

It is said that a group of people boated to Georges Island late one night. They planned to enter Fort Warren after the island closed (sunset). As they entered the main portal a group of guards ordered them to halt. Some of the intruders ran back to the boat. The others never made it. They were found the next morning hanged from the trees in the bastion courtyard. The bodies were removed and reported as drowned.
The guards, as reported, had beards and were wearing civil war era uniforms. (The event happened in late 1970s) Their guns were long and had bayonets attached. Although they appeared human they had no eyes, just black holes.
There were no rangers assigned there and the caretaker was off the island for a family emergency. Recently a boat was found tied to the dock one early morning. No one was ever found on the island and the registered boat owners were never found.

Back in the early fifties my family used to go to Georges Island to hang out. No one ever came aside from us, year after year. One day my brothers left me alone and ran through one of the tunnels. I was too afraid to go in because they were very dark and very long. I was waiting outside in the sunlight when I watched the long grass bend as though someone was walking toward me, I was terrified being only 7 years old and boy did I run into the tunnel. As I remember we were told by my father not to go down into the lower areas as the wood was rotten, yeah we did and there were crowds of confederate soldiers depicted on wall murals but in the corner was a shadow figure which initially I thought to be part of the painting until it faded away. Lastly I was saved by something, I use to run the walls around the fort along the break water and one day I slipped on the sea gull poop and slid over the wall just hanging by my fingers. I felt something pull on my upper arm until I was again on the top of the wall. I was not afraid and frankly I did not even think again about it until I explain to my mother all the sea gull poop on my shirt and shorts.
I long to go back but I hear now its a touristy place and would not have the peace and quiet it held for us all those years ago.

There was only one woman executed during the civil war era. Mary Surrat was hanged for owning the boarding house where Booth and others plotted against President Lincoln. All documentation of the era has NO references to any other woman executed during the era particularly in Boston or anywhere in the Union. Even know female spys were placed in confinement.
