Fort Warren
Used as a prisoner of war camp during the Civil War, Georges Island is said to have many ghosts. It is reported that one ghost may be heard playing “John Browns Body” on the harmonica. In another story, one woman dressed as a man to get into the island to see her lover, a rebel prisoner. Subsequently, she was hanged in a black dress given to her by the warden’s wife. It is said that the woman may still be heard screaming today.
Hey. I have been to this island. When I went I didn’t know it was haunted or about the stories but I could definately feel some weird presence in this place. It is on an island off of Boston Harbor (you can take a boat there) and it has all the old dungeons where the prisoners were kept. My friends and I thought we heard a woman screaming but then just laughed it off because we were scared. It is a great place to go you can get right down in all the old caves and cells. I definately recommend the experience. Even if you don’t believe me!

Hmm, well…of my opinions about ghosts, You should try and go as late as possible because a lot of the rooms are lighted and at the same time a lot of the halls are completely pitch black. Very Interesting place I’ll say. It is a descently big Island and it’s beautiful to see the land itself. Good stuff

The Lady in black fell in love with a confederate prisoner. When the war was over she made him promise to come back, he never did. She can still be seen walking on Georges Island looking towards the sea. Waiting for his return. Also there tunnels that run under the ocean from island to island!

I actually live in Hull, Mass and I can see Georges island. it was also said that because of the Lady in Black two guards in the prision went mad because they there dog went crazy, im assuming after seeing the lady in black, and u can still hear dogs barking and scratching the wall. it was also said that she snuck onto the island via boat from Hull where the elementary school is and people on the islands or boats and see her lurking underneath the school.(there is a big hill on the bottom is a railroad track thats where she was located.) Pretty Cool huh? Yah its a highlight of goin to Hull High School.

I live in Winthrop, and my 4th grade class went there on a field trip. At one point I swore I felt something touch my shoulder. But I turned around and there was nobody there. I never wanted to go back but in retrospect I kinda do now…

I grew up in Quincy, MA (right outside Boston). I went there with a friend who belonged to a local Yacht Club in a boat parade. I think it was 1978 (we were about 11 or 12). We took a tour of Fort Warren and the true story was told to us. Indeed, there was a woman who dressed like a man/guard in order to get onto the island to rescue her lover/husband. When she was caught, she was hanged. Her only request was that she be hanged in a dress, as a woman. They located a black dress for her (property of the warden’s wife) and hung her in it. There have been many credible witnesses, including workers and visitors alike who have reported seeing her. I myself did not see her. But, before the tour or any knowledge of this “legend”, I thought it was the creepiest place I had EVER been. You can tour the dungeons and it is so dark inside the fort, even on the brightest summer day. The minute I walked in there, I couldn’t wait to leave. I have never been back since. I even just took my kids to Boston in the summer of ‘06 and we stayed right on Long Wharf where the boats go out to the islands. I wouldn’t take my children there and I am 38 now! If you are looking to get creeped out, this is the place to do it!

I live in Boston and every year I usually go to George’s Island with Family and Friends at least one time in the summer. I had no idea that the Ghost of the Lady in Black exist. Now I’m kind of creepy to go back and at the same time happy to now the story and look for adventure.

I went there last year before we moved here to Boston. I have a psychic gift. I saw a revolutionary ghost with one leg missing screaming for help. After that, I left the island. I didn’t want to run into other entities.

Tina,
It is an island near Boston. You have to take a boat behind the Marriott at Long Wharf. It is about a 10-15 ride.

I went there twice. Once alone with my dad and my friend. and just today actually! Last time I did, I heard noises. Today I saw some weird things, but no actuall ghost and no lady and black. But I do beleive she is there and I do beleive those other people’s witnesses cuz that place must be REALLY haunted cuz all the prisoners that died there. And i went on the haunted battle ship 139 and more haunted places. Im sort of a ghost hunter

Does anyone know how you can go on an investigation? Also, are you able to go to the prison at night?
Comment by Chris | 07.26.2007 | 12:14 am
We went into an unlit hallway today under the rampart on the south side of the fort today. We definitely heard something like heavy footsteps in front of us and took pictures that have freaky looking orbs in them… could be dust, who knows. I just know I am not going back there.

I live close to Deer Island in Winthrop. When i was a child in the 70’s, we went to the islands with large groups of people from the Yacht Club. Back then, you could stay overnight on some islands without a problem. It is tough to tell whether i saw, felt or sensed anything, because the older teens would always try to spook us. something every generation did to the next. BUT! if you want to freak out, try walking the Deer Island walk path on a semi-foggy night. at the halfway point, you will stand numb fixed on the boston islands thinking of whether the lady in black, the ghost of boston light or the spirits of the Deer Island imprisoned indians are walking with you…………

I was there this past weekend (twice now) and it’s a lovely place to go on a summer’s day. You do need a flashlight to go exploring in the dark rooms and passageways and you can definitely feel a strangeness about the place. You can’t camp or stay the night and the last boat leaves at 6:00 pm.

I’m from Southern California and I will be in Boston the
weekend after Labor Day and we already have tickets for
George’s Island. I can’t wait. I had a ghost give me a
little push in a cemetery in Savannah a couple of years ago. Can you get anything with a digital camera??

The way the Story really goes is that there was a woman and she was from the south. Her husband was captured and brought there. She traveled north to try and help him escape. She found several people wh were sympathetic to her cause and they helped her sneak onto the island dressed as a man. During the escape she and her husband were cornered and she tried to shoot one of the guards but the pistol she was using misfired and killed her husband. After that she surrendered and was sentenced to death. She spent her remaining days there waiting to be hung. Her last request was to be hung in a dress. The only thing they could find for her was a black dress so that is what she was hing in. Now she haunts the place.
I have been there a couple time but have never seen anything however the place has a weird feeling to it almost sad.

I’ve been to the island, fort warren….yeh,it is haunted…I live in Hull & the fort offers the best
view of the island…ironic that the fort in Hull is also one of many a parnormal spot…..another place that is supposedly haunted is long Island out off Squantum but the guards will not let you go out to the island lighthouse & the grounds around it,near the hospital out there…that place is creepy tho in use.
the ghost there is the lady in red -the red mist phantom who roams the grounds around the light house waiting for a ship….I am a amature ghost-paranorm investigator by the way

we went to the fort for a school trip. and the guide said something about a lady dressed in all black that would walk around the grounds in the winter. it was creepy and we had to crawl through a tunnel that had closed in spaces.you had to crawl and it was wet and muddy but it was worht it! our hwole class agreed it was the best trip of the year. plus all the guides were great at telling the stories!! i reccomend it 100% ! go if you want to have a great time.and it fine to go with kids , you dont have to worry about them hangiing on to you the whole time.

I have been to Georges island when i never knew it was haunted. But it was still a scary place to be. i remember i was with a group of tourists, and we was inside one of those castles, our flaslights always kept turning off and we would have to replace them with newer onces all the time…so i would have to say that there is SOME presence around there.

I went there as a child for a school field trip the story I heard from my mother before I went was something like this. In the 1800s a gentle man was captured during the war and his wife heard of this and decided to break him out or the fort she went there with a few rebels and armed with only a pistol.she set out one night thru under ground rail roads in hull ma. Were she then took a boat to georges island .During the breakin attempt one of the lieutenants heard of the escape attempt went to the dungeon to stop the rebels when the woman was cornered she pulled out her gun which jammed when she fired it killing herself. The legend my mother told me was the lady in black then walked the grounds of the fort from that day forward and if you see her death would come of you so she told if I see anything out of the ordinary not to look.I remember seeing a lot of weird things that day doors were their then they weren’t a fence on a hill when we climbed wasn’t there but was when we turned around etc. But never seeing the lady in black.when I returned home that day I asked my mom why she was so scared when I went there and she told me that when my uncle (who is deceased)went to georges island he came home scared out of his mind saying he saw the lady in black my grandmother told him he was crazy and then told her he fell into a hole in the fort which looked like they used it for lifting canons there were chains hanging in it aswell anyways when he fell he said he screamed for help a woman all dressed in black reached her hand down to pull him out he reached for her hand grabbed her by her wrist as she pulled him up he pulled some jewelry off of her a bracelet and 2 rings, when he got to his feet to thank her she was gone,my grand mother was shocked when he showed her the jewelry.my uncle david was killed in a car accident a week later.

I visited Fort Warren with my parent’s in 2000 and it was interesting trip since I read about the story of the woman in black. I asked a male who worked on the island about her and she told me that it was not even true.

I was a summer camp councilor for the YMCA and I had to take a group of kids around the island a few years ago. I did not see anything myself, but it was by far the creepiest place I had ever been. I refused to go into those dark tunnels because you can tell that something is not right there!
