Real Haunted House

Franklin Castle

Cuyohoga County, Ohio

Many years ago, a man murdered his entire family and committed suicide in this house. Many people have had strange and unexplainable events happen to them here. There is a graveyard 500 yards away from the house and this may be a cause for some of the paranormal happenings.

The mans name is Hans Teideman (possible misspell of the last name), he did not commit suicide in that house. After his wife died he sold the house and remarried. Those who did die in there were his daughters, and a servant girl. Hans ghost is said to roam the area of West 25th and Fulton looking for his grave at Riverside cemetary.

Many years ago, when the Franklin Castle was up for sale, a realtor took me through the house because I was considering on purchasing it and renovating the structure. After seeing many rooms, we decided to check out the basement. as we proceeded down the stairs, she stumbled, fell down the stairs and lost one of her shoes! Pretty scary!

The cut and dry description of the house is terribly inaccurate. As before mentioned, Hans did not kill himself in the house nor has it ever been proven that he was responsible for the numerous other deaths that occurred in the house (although his guilt seems somewhat obvious). Hans himself suddenly dropped dead while strolling in the park one day. There is no dispute that Mr. Teideman was a troubled man, but there were also many happenings in the house long after the Teideman family were gone that also could have had an impact on the “haunting” of the house. If you do some simple internet research, you can find out all kinds of neat history on the house. Happy Haunting!

I don’t quite remember all of the history that I learned of Franklin Castle but it’s obvious that there are many wrong stories floating around. I can say one thing is for certain, that house is haunted. After I learned of the castle I took a trip to check it out. I walked around the outside of the castle around the midnight hour and I saw the figure of what appeared to be a young girl in a white dress standing in one of the windows. I actually stood frozen and afraid. When I realized I was still standing there the friends that I was exploring with were a few yards away from me and I ran to catch up. I would not trade that experience for anything but I am possitive that there are some strange happenings that go on in that building!

The Mullhauser family sold the castle to the German Socialist Party in 1913. They used the house for meetings and parties, or so it was said. However, the legends of the house maintain that the Socialists were actually Nazi spies and that twenty of their members were machine-gunned to death in one of the castle’s secret rooms. They sold the house fifty-five years later, and during the time of their residence, the house was mainly unoccupied. This story is from: http://www.prairieghosts.com/oh-frank.html

I read that the family caught an illness, thats how they died. There was also a story where Luise took over a womens body that once lived there, a Mrs. Ramone, something like that. Then Mr. Teidman sold the house and remarried.

Seriously! Its nice to have tourists but its the city and the recovering addicts next door will tell you your dumb and to go away if you get too close. I was born and raised in cleveland and always took my friends to see the historical landmark.

No pictures have ghosts or orbs.

Its not open to the public and hasnt been in YEARS!

If anyone says that theyve been in it or “hung out” there, its almost definite its a lie.

Its a quaint neighborhood with lots of victorian houses and ghetto people. Its in the city and a very popular area “Ohio City” which is right by downtown where we all get drunk and people sell crack.

I dont doubt that its haunted but all the place is boarded and you cant see in any windows.

All you can do is wait and see if the owner is gonna do touring when the construction is done.

Personally knowing the current owner (I went to college with her) I was able to swing a 2 night stay in this house with another friend 6 or 7 years ago. This was a few months before it was seriously damaged by an arson. I make no claims on any happenings there during this house’s history, but I can say with certainty that for two days and nights not a thing happened. It was certainly spooky in the way that only a giant dark strange old house can be, but we witnessed no events of any kind.

As for now, the renovations have never been completed (it was an unlivable mess when I camped out there), the arson made it worse, and it’s sitting there in limbo on a pretty bad looking street. I felt more uncomfortable with the neighborhood I was staying in than with the haunted aspect of the house. This discomfort being proven when the arson broke in and torched the upper floors and roof.

The external fire damage was repaired but that’s about it.

Here’s a posting from a guy who trespassed and took pictures after the arson. I don’t agree with the illegality of his methods, but I can verify his reporting is accurate:

Reading many websites with stories of the Franklin Castle, most seem not to report about one of the previous owners, Michael DeVinko. Michael “Mickey” DeVinko lived, owned and operated a business out the Franklin Castle, which I was his administrative assistant for 10 years. I’ve spend countless hours over the years in the Franklin Castle and never experienced any paranormal experiences. The stories I can tell though are numerous during the DeVinko years.

If a graveyard had something to do with a paranormal haunting then wouldn’t their have to be paranormal hauntings almost everywhere? Irrelevant!

I was only going to comment on the on the murder/suicide…..which never happend…then I saw your little note about keeping the place looking classy. Well, when you post alot of known urban myths, class is out the window. I try to find something serious and “real” and this is what I usually find.

I live very near the Castle and have for years, and I admit, I am a bit of a Castle stalker. I know it is haunted. There is definitely “paranormal activity” there. For one, check out the video I caught inside the house a few years back. (link below) I have also seen figures in the windows over the years, mostly older and younger females. I have heard the babies crying in the night. Honestly, I did not really believe it was haunted when I was younger, but now I know it is.
As for recent events… I have seen some kind of filming going on and this past year and twice I’ve seen some sort of photo shot out front with what I think is the new owner. I heard from someone who says he knows him that they are going to film a new TV series about the restoration and the ghost. I also have had 4 people tell me they have reserved their membership for the Club that the owner announced a few years ago… So it seems some good might actually happen to the old place after all. I will keep everyone posted on what I see and hear.
