Real Haunted House

Ghost Light Road

Jacksonville, Florida

A man was once driving down this road when he crashed and was subsequently decapitated. If one drives on this road at about five miles an hour, a white light will approach the car and then hover above it.

Ive been there but I heard a different version of the story
I was told that it was a man who escaped from the mental hospital thats close by and was killed on the road from running through some barbrd wire thats what supposley decapted him.

The light that people saw was from cars turning at the County Road 210/Greenbriar Road junction. Since they have straighten the road, there has been no more sightings.

I’ve been down that road plenty of times and each time I see the light, however you also see a tailight which is really spooky. There is no way it is a hoax on account of the road is about 3 miles long (at least) and the road that intersects it runs adjacent to ghost light road, therefore it is physically impossible for it to be another cars lights. VERY SPOOKY!!

Jane says:

December 3, 2005, 3:25 pm

It’s very possible for it to be cars. CR 210 had a curve that took it back to SR 16. Greenbriar Road joined 210 at the curve, almost like a T with a slight curve. If a car was on 210 coming west (the direction of Greenbriar and the curve), the person headed east would see their headlights suddenly “disappear” when the car turned.

This is the first time I have ever looked up a ghost website and when I saw that “Ghost Light Road” was a sighting, I immediately got chills and called my best friend. My friends and I went there while we were in high school, approximately 13 years ago and witnessed this light. It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced! We were driving up and down this road for about an hour and once we were leaving, suddenly this head light was right on our tail. It seemed as though it was going to drive through us. There were about 6 of us teenagers in a van and we couldn’t stop crying and screaming. We went back another time and experienced something else a bit more spooky, but that’s another story. I didn’t think people talked about that road anymore…..

I have lived in Jax for many many years and as a teenager we would go to ghost light road. This is an actual occurance. You do see the light coming straight at you. If you then look behind you, you will also see its taillight. If it was fake then how do you always only see one light? never two like a car. I also heard the story of the escapee from the mental hospital who was decapitated. He is looking up and down the road for his head.

ATTN: Sean H. Engelmann

I have called your phone # (5923 one) and am interested in your experience (with your equipment)on Ghostlight Rd.

I have been on the road about 16 years ago and saw some strange occurance which looked like a motorcycle light following “us”–about 5 kids in a jeep…Then, as everyone else has stated above, what appeared to be a single RED light which followed the car a a distance but stayed the same distance away form the vehicle. Then vanished. Strange to say the least…good thing we had about a case of beer with us for the ride. email me if you would like.

Thanks and it sure as hell is NOT the “moon or street light”.

Stephen says:

February 14, 2006, 10:39 pm

The real name for the road is “Greenbriar Rd.” St. John’s County.

Can get to it from San Jose/S.R.13 over Julington Creek bridge and past “Switzerland” area…

Happy hunting and bring lots of whiskey for the ghost.

Jane says:

February 15, 2006, 3:23 pm

You can also get to it from Roberts Road or the I-95 exit for C.R. 210. There are so many things the lights could be. I lived in the area for the past 11 years and up until a few months ago, I live off of Greenbriar/C.R. 210 (they run into each other). I’ve been up and down that road a thousand times, under all sorts of different conditions, at all different times. A long straight road at night (especially when it was unpaved and the dust was kicked up) can play all sorts of tricks on your eyes. Two headlights seen at a distance will look like one. It might even be a motorcycle but not a ghost one(heck, we have enough in the area). I’ve never seen anything on the road nor been scared by the light. The deer in the area are much scarier. If anyone has questions for me, feel free to email me at

att jane…
not to argue .. but the thing I have learned about ghost is if you dont want to see them you never will.I have friends who are skeptics and I think ghost react to an individual more than a location.I also never saw anything supernatural until I went looking for it. I havent done this for very long but I can tell you that when I started looking, I started finding. going this weekend to st augestine to check out an old house…wish me luck

ps..stephen…I wish I could say I was an expert but I am not..maby contact north florida ghost hunters they can get you started…they are local…happy hunting… you can E-mail me at

Jane says:

February 19, 2006, 10:37 pm

But I never said I didn’t want to see anything. Far from it, I would love to see something supernatural. I’ve had unexplained happen to me and to family members and friend as well. I just don’t believe that there is anything at this particular location and if there was, it could never be proved because of all the things it could be. You said that you never saw anything supernatural until you started looking for it. Could you be seeing things because you want to? Tell a person who believe in the supernatural that a place is haunted and they have a tendency to find evidence in the most mundane things. Send a skeptic to the same place and all they’ll hear is the house settling (or whatever). Same concept as matrixing in pictures. A set of pixels becomes a face because you want it to be. I’m not saying that all hauntings are this. I believe that this one has not real. Until I have some sort of experience there that can’t be credited to something else (and I’ve plenty of opportunities), then I’m going to say it’s not paranormal.

Sean H Engelmann says:

February 20, 2006, 1:50 pm

jane… I allways love a good arguement. I have not seen the light but one time. mst of my case lies in the insterments I use. also the consistancy of the equipment shows that something is going on out there. maby we can hook up and check this thing out together E-mail me and let me know…also looking to start a local jacksonville club if any one is interested..also bring someone with you so neither of us feel like this some date or something lol

we have been on that road too. But we have a different story. We saw a pink headless cat hovering above us. We were walking, not in a car. So we grabbed the headless cat by his tail and cooked it and our boyfriends ate it for dinner. It was freaky. then our boyfriends died. and we saw them on the same road 2 weeks later

Ok i live in jacksonville and i have not been down this road but i have heard alot about it can some one who has been down it before and that is honest tell me the truth? is it real or not? cuz i aint goin out there lol..

Jane says:

March 13, 2006, 8:20 pm

Well, whether or not it’s real is still up for debate. Some people of had experiences, others (like me) haven’t. Both the road itself isn’t scary or anything. It’s one of the main roads in the area and has a lot of traffic on it now.

Teresa says:

March 14, 2006, 10:01 pm

About 20 years ago two of my brothers and an now famous medium visited the road to investigate the ghost light. We did see the light and after watching we discovered that the light was caused by headlights curving around the road at the end of ghost road. I really wanted it to be real but this was not the finding.

me and a group of my friends used to go there about 13 years ago,we would have 3 or 4 cars with us,we would drive slow down this road,we would see 1 light coming toward us then it would dissappear,,then we would see one tail light behind us. we didn’t see it everytime we went out there, that was along time ago i dont remember the whole story, something about a motorcycle wreck and they found everything but the headlight, tail light and the guys head?????????

Jane says:

March 25, 2006, 10:30 am

I’ve heard two different stories. The first one (and most common) says that a motorcyclist was driving down the road and wreaked. The light you see coming at you and then disappearing is a replay of the accident. The other story, the one Jennifer mentioned at the top of the page, is less common and deals with a â??mental hospitalâ?? at the end of Greenbriar (I believe that itâ??s a group home for people with mental retardation). A person escaped and then was killed near the road. I havenâ??t heard that particular story since middle school but the motorcyclist story seems to be the agreed upon story for the area.

Shannon says:

March 25, 2006, 5:01 pm

I’ve seen the light too. It was about 10 years ago, scared the **** out of us. Same thing, light following us, then disappeared. I’ve heard the explanation about the intersecting road, but it’s weird, because the light seemed to be right on top of us, like a semi truck with it’s brights on.

Tom says:

March 26, 2006, 1:29 am

I just went out there tonight for my first time and i was completely skeptical and we stopped our car and flashed our lights three times and out of nowhere a very distinct white light appeared just one coming towards us. It seemed to be a mile or so away. I figured it was just a car. So we started the car and as soon as we started the car it dissapeared. I was still skeptical and so we did it again. The exact same thing happened. I wanted to wait until it got close to the car and it was maybe a quarter mile away, just that one single light but then another car started to come up behind us on the road so we had to move and it dissapeared again as soon as the car started.

O.K. I am back.

#1 If anyone, especially someone with instruments(even the non-experts) want to go ANYWHERE around the Jax-FL area(s) to “Search for ghosts, aliens, etc.etc.) then COUNT ME IN.

Bring along a cute girl or be one and you just may get dinner out of the whole deal. Either way, I saw some weird **** (e.g. lights and so forth) while on the damn road 16 years ago–now the whole damn road is different because it goes to 210 and it just isn’t he same “dirt road” that it used to be.

Still today, what I really remember is the “mental hospital” which I would love to drive past again. We saw the light after passing the mental hospital (about 1 miles past it) on the dirt road & it was strange to say the least. Yeah, it could have been a road somehow and an optical illusion but since I don’t even remember exactly what the road looked like and since it has been changed–I am not really the best guy to explain the logistics of the road layout.

That being said let’s have a GHOST LIGHT ROAD PARTY and seriously have some fun.

Email me if oyu are interested:

Check it & happy hunting.

I have been down Greenbrier Rd. many times, spanning several years. My first experience was pretty much the norm.Single light drifting at constant speed and then single red light as if it passed thru us.No drugs,no booze, just teenage curiousity.I think the mental patient thing is hooey,my history comes from and old family friend from Fruit Cove/Switzerland area….a young man was driving his bike too fast and lost control.being thrown from bike and killed.I still dont know what i saw, wont call it a ghost but wont say its not. Also SEAN I am interested in starting a research group for the Jax area also.I am serious and would like to do it legit.

Stephen says:

March 30, 2006, 7:28 pm

#1 Any female humans who not only would like to go to the damn road to look for the damn ghost–and maybe even have some damn SEX–COUNT ME IN.

#2 I personally think that the ghost has found his head, drank the whickey which I left for him and purchased a new harley to chill on–Word on the street is that he cruised over the the Jacksonville Gold Club on his new bike (and a bit tipsy) and picked up one hell of a stripper–EASY ON THE EYES (so-to-speak !!)

#3 Anyone that wants to go to any other haunted house that probably is scarier–I obviously have some time on my hands and DO NOT mind spicing up an evening…St. Augustine is cool by me and they have got some good bars.

Stephen says:

March 30, 2006, 7:30 pm

Jane says:

April 10, 2006, 10:21 am

Um, Annoyed, what is that about? Not a lot of people travel down that side road to see if it’s a mental hospital or a home for people with mental retardation (two VERY different things). So, it could be a lot of different things down there that change the story. Also, the road isn’t in Jacksonville. It’s technically in Switerland (or St. Johns, according to the vote in the area and you could even make a case for Fruit Cove). Everybody just says Jacksonville because most of the mail is address that way and it’s the closest city to the area.

Just go to the road, slice your wrists & let me know what you see.

Sean H Engelmann says:

April 26, 2006, 4:03 pm

Dont get it… just because you are a skeptic, and you have your own opinion about how the world works, gives you the rite to come in to a message board and “LOOSE YOUR DAMN MIND”…ANNOYED CHILL!! its going to be alright remember people are not perfect and sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes people have different views than you…You know what…its o.k.

I have lived in Jacksonville my entire life and have heard the stories about Greenbriar road, but unfortunately, i have never had the chance to go out there. Would like to do that someday. However, i also wanted to mention that there have been sightings of a vanishing hitchhiker on Girvin Road (which is actually in Jacksonville), and my teenaged daughter and i drove up and down Girvin Road one morning at about 2 a.m.-we drove up and down and kept turning around for about an hour and a half-i started summoning the ghost by saying, “Come on, show yourself”-after doing that for several times, we came around the curve and there was a young woman standing on the side of the road summoning me to stop-she was moving in what seemed to be slow motion-it scared me to death-i gunned my SUV and my daughter jumped into the backseat and was scared to death-i contacted the Jacksonville Ghost hunting society and emailed the description of the girl, what she was wearing and hair color, and she wore glasses-they e-mailed me back and said that that was the best visual description that they have been able to obtain from anyone, and that yes-that was the vanishing hitch hiker. Just thought you all would be interested in the story. Happy Haunting Hunting ALL!!

Good ol' Steve says:

May 3, 2006, 8:46 pm

Dr. Sean Engelmann…I have to agree with you there. No more ridiculous comments and/or the “LOSING OF THY MIND” so to speak.

Now WENDY. Was the girl holding a can of beer & a nitrous oxide balloon because I think that around that time, a chick I picked up from The Fly’s Tie Irish Pub freaked out and jumped out of my car–at exactly that time & on that road. If so, she would have been wearing a poka-dot skirt & thigh-highs with heels. She may have been mistaken for the ghost hitchhiker but who’s to say?

Maybe not.

Anyway, I am going to drive up & down that road as it seems that the GHOSTLIGHT RD. is pretty much lame-O these days.

I lived off of Roberts Road about 13 yrs ago, which runs a few miles from State Road 13 (San Jose Blvd) to Greenbriar (Ghost Light Rd). Greenbriar runs a few miles from SR 13 (just a mile or two further south from Roberts Rd & SR 13) to 210. I guess you can say SR 13, Greenbriar & Roberts Rd form a triangle. All of the roads are paved now with many more homes & a school or two. I have been on that road MANY MANY times, driving slow & fast, in both directions. I’ve never seen anything, but didn’t know about the ghost until a few years ago, and I haven’t gone back to look for it, eventhough I still travel that road often. I want to make a special trip just to investigate & will let you all know what or if I see anything. My husband heard of the story too & is who told me of it. Also, I have no idea where the asylum or home for the mentally challenged is, never heard about that part of it.

I went down that road once when I was a teen. It was me and four other people, all uncomfortably packed in a mustang coupe. We drove towards the highway lights. The lights at the end of the road are simply headlights from cars on other roads. However, after a policeman pulled us over and told us the story, we gave up and started heading back to SR-13. It was when we were heading back that there was a single, red tail light in front of us. We chased it down as fast as we could, and no matter what, it stayed about 15 feet ahead of us. We came screaming on to the paved portion of the road, and immediately turned the car back around. As soon as we did, we saw a bright single headlight sitting where the dirt met the pavement (this was when it was unfinished). It moved as if turning around, and then we saw a red tail light again, and it slowly disappeared off down the road. Both lights were far too bright to be from the distant highways. Put me under oath, make me sign a sworn statement, that is exactly what we saw. I remember that we were going slow and we had our lights off. DON’T DO THIS, IT IS UNSAFE.

I’ve been up and down that road several times and have seen the lights back when I was in Highschool (92-96). I was recently back in Jax and went to take my kids down the road to see the lights and was told by my friends that since they paved and rerouted Greenbriar road that the lights have not been there since. We tried anyway but with no luck. Of course that could be that it was the earliest we ever tried it, since the kids have a bedtime and in Highschool we used to see it after midnight

Hi, I am from the class of ’86 Wolfson Sr. High. I too have visited Ghost Light Rd. and it is true. We saw the light ahead of us coming at us and then it disappeared only to see tail lights behind us. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen. I was screaming at my boyfriend to get us the hekk out of there. When he got me home I told my mother where I had been and she has seen it also.

I asked my husband, whose lived here all of his life, if he’s ever heard the story about “ghost road” and he said “no”. If you know anything about the WJK house in Mayport, please email me at Trying to find some information for a friend who is very confused right now. I’m not sure what I believe about ghosts. I’m not convinced they were ever living people. Seems more like demons whose purpose is to confuse and scare to me.

Angel. Let’s go find the ghost.

Also, bring some beer–the ghost likes whiskey. No shhhhhit.

If possible we will either casually enter the burnt insane asylum and/or break into it as we see fit. There are others coming. If you have some cute friends–bring them too…We’ll get thr ghost drunk .

Let’s hope this time he rides his bike a bit safer.

You game>?

I’ve been down that road millions of times. I’ve seen the light everytime. But I’ve never seen the ghost. I guess I’m lucky. I’m never going down that road again. It scares me!

Steve says:

September 11, 2006, 4:47 pm

Rose my dear lady…Don’t be afraid of that damn ghost too much as it seems to only like chillin’ around the “outs” of the road–the old DIRT ROAD which backs up against the burnt insane asylum fence.

Anyways, you’s gonna be jus fine if ya jus chill round da other GREENBRIAR RD–the new 1. K?

Jane says:

September 12, 2006, 1:19 pm

I have a hard time believe that it would be the dirt road off of the now paved Greenbriair Road. First, not a lot of people ever go down that road. There’s no need to. Second, since the actual Greenbriar Road was paved less than ten years ago (I think it’s been about six years), this would be the unpaved road that people have mentioned. People traveled that road all the time and even more so since it has been paved.

ash says:

September 19, 2006, 1:15 pm

I live off of Greenbriar Road and yes it used to be a dirt road back in the day. I have been down both 210 and Greenbriar hundreds of times and I have never seen anything like that! I have also been to the “mental institution” that everyone refers to and that happens to be a church retreat camp. This story is bogus and I find it hard to beleieve that anybody has witnessed this without it being from their own imagination!

Steve says:

September 19, 2006, 11:42 pm

Finally something we can ALL work with. We needed you a LONG time ago. When I went there it was when I was 16–that was 18 years ago & I am telling you there was a mental institution and a dirt road with a fence that said so–a *WARNING* so to speak.

Now that we all know that there still is something around that part…Can we break into the Church Retreat and “do a little testing” so-to-speak…ya know, with the equipment mentioned above?

We need a map to the “OLD Insane Asylum” so to speak. Please help as this will be the basis of our newest & (thanks to you–our best) plan.

Much respect.

I have my ghost buster costume from last year that I will be wearing while holding a 25 1/3 mesh fishing net up-right in my rag top….while driving down GLR. I have yet to convince my friend to join my ghost mania, eventhough she is a dog and can not talk back. So if there is another ghostbuster out there????? maybe a venkman, spangler, or a possible winston??? I will be Ray. —-Sarah O

Lets start this thing and stop talking about it . who knows we may even get our own tv show out of it…lol . this is for people with a passion for the un-explaned not the passion for beer and sex..(again for steve) ..just messing with ya buddy . If you behave you can join too. We are all grown ups here, I would hate to have to start up a guys only ghost hunters club. Anyway anyone interested e-mail me and I will start contacting you guys to let you know whats going on. Ok, here’s the deal…this road is a normal road in a fairly nice area of Jacksonville, Florida. Not much down that road but it’s paved and I went down there last night. Not a dam thing there lol. So, let’s drop the rumours. *)

Droop says:

October 20, 2006, 1:06 pm

I used to hang out in that area when I was a teen when the road was still a dirt road. I was told there was 3 holes in the road, which there was, each for a man, harley and a big rig. I was told a guy on a harley was making a short cut down the road and a truck driver was going the other way using the same short cut the other way and feel asleep. The truck hit the man and harley…. the rig, harley and man all “died” at that location. I know it is an illusion, but took me several times to drive the length of the road to find out, so I was spooked. Now there was a mental hospital back off that dirt road back in the early 90s, we drove out there and found it one night. When we found it a large 4×4 truck chased us out of there.
Just another goofy story for the same thing.

i think that ghosts are real. and i believe that everyone can see them some just choose to ignore their ability. i am 13 years old and had my first ghostly encounter when i was six. I was sitting watching tv with my babysitter and friend, robin, when i got thirsty and bed time came around. when i got up robin turned off the tv and i passed by my hallway. i thought i saw my little brother standing there, by our then junk closet. he had his hand sitting on the rather uneven door perfectly and oddly straight. i froze and said “lil bro, go back to bed, it’s too late for you to be up.”. he didn’t move so i rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and took a good look at him. that’s when i realized it wasn’t my baby brother. i shook my head violently and stare again. just at that moment he walked into the closet. i blinked a bit and continued on with getting my drink. at this point i was a bit spooked. i got my drink and walked back to watch a bit of tv to calm my nerves. my friend and i then heard an extremely loud crash from that very same closet. we swore on our lives we had broken something by putting something up wrong[our games we’re kept in that closet]. i got up to clean up the mess we hought we had made. i was still fully aware of what i had seen just moments before. i opened up the sliding door and there it was. clean as if nothing had happened. nothing fell and everything was in place. i was taken aback and walked to the back bedroom where we were sleeping. me? i couldn’t sleep. i got up the next morning to tell my mom what had happened. she laughed it off because i was so young, she didn’t want to spook me. a year later, i had another encounter, in this encounter he was right in front of me. i was taller by two inches from the last time and had looked sraight at him. he said something i couldn’t quite make out. i said “i beg your pardon?” and he repeated what he said. he asked me a question. “who are you? and why are you here?”. after about peing my pants i answered back. i told him my name and that my family had moved from new york when i was just three. he gave me an odd look and then smiled. what happened after that encounter is a bit fuzzy. though i have had many sightings so to speak, i’ll never forget one thing i found while being bored in my room. i played hide and seek with my imaginary friend, jack, from the nightmare before christmas, i hid in my closet and planned on “surprising him” by jumping out saying haha or something. just before i was about to get out i stood up and put my hand on my wall to my left. i felt something marked in. carved. i brought in a flashlight after i told jack what i had found i used the light to decipher what was there. my eyes widened when i saw a name. it was spelled out m-a-r-c-s-h-a-l-l. marcshall. kind of like marshall. but with a cooler spelling. anywhat, after i found that i realized he had carved it, the ghost from before. i continued to see him and each time i did he talked to me more, now we’re what you could call friends. he has always sat at the edge of my bed, it just took me until then to realize it. i sometimes think i have an over-reactive imagination, but then what about my mom? she heard him and has seen him. same for my dad, robin, my little brother, my aunt, my unlce, my cousin[haha, he flicked the back of her head.]. also, my cat cannot sleep in my room as soon as it reaches about 10pm. he eows like crazy and dosn;t leave my door. i have found him cowering in a corner before, staring maliciously at something in the opposite side. please, do not think me crazy. this is very true. thank you for letting me share my experience with you.

You’ve got it. No more silly beer, whiskey, or sex jokes. PERIOD I said.

Now about that Cumberland Island 12 man boating “death sentence” we all are dying to sign up for…”COUNT ME IN”.

I’m always up for a good ghost experience & unlike you, I do not have a huge list of haunted places. I would like to go to several places surrounding the Carnegie mansion, especially with a metal detector. But that’s a different gig most likely.

I agree, CO-ED ghost hunting is cool & WAY WAY better…and unlike you, my girlfriend(s) do not mind that JAX GOLD CLUB “meetings” as long as they are present.

Let me know about this & it may be easier to converse about this if “someone”–like you, started a YAHOO GROUP for Jacksonville-Florida Ghost Hunters or other paranormal activities. Yup, we are all professionals & believe it or not (like Ripley)–we sometimes LOVE acting unprofessional. Let’s sign up as many people that we can. I have 3-4 people–married also, that are interested so whenever the group gets up–we’re ready.

P.S. I’m still bringing my damn whiskey (in a flask.) The ghost likes it.

A guy on a motorcycle was driveing done the road and never saw it and it decapited him. So yes it is him you see going through your cars.

I hate to burst everyone’s bubble, but there was a very interesting programm aired this past year on t.v. showing geologists and other such scientific brainheads examining an area near this supposed spooky site and they showed how the type of rock formations in the area can emit strange lights when the weather conditions are right. The lights described on this thread sound exactly like the lights they were describing and showing examples of.

Steve2 says:

STEVE!!! First off, you’re an imposter, I’m Steve, not you. I love spooky scary stuff, I work in one of our state’s fine correctional institutions, and our cellblock, which used to be confinement, is very much haunted, as well as a few of our dormitories. I’d like to come on a ghost hunt with you some time, I may even bring you some of MY whiskey in MY flask!! email me –

Jane says:

October 29, 2006, 12:00 pm

What show was this? I wasn’t aware of anything being filmed in the area. I also have a hard time believing that a rock formation would be a cause of this. Limestone is one of the few rocks that Florida naturally has. A bit of quick research turned up a few sites that claim limestone can “record” and cause a residual haunting (which you could make case that this is one) but there were no references to any sort of study or the likes. Also, if the rocks are causing the lights, wouldn’t they be seen in a lot more places?

I went there last night with my girlfriend. We didn’t see anything, and we drove as slow as possible whenever there weren’t other cars coming. It’s a pretty busy road now, even at midnight. It’s also a long road. Where exactly are you supposed to see the light? There was a cross on the side of the road at one point, but we didn’t see anything there. It was pretty spooky, though.

Jane says:

November 2, 2006, 8:23 am

The light “appears” towards the eastern end of the road, by the saddle club. The cross was for an accident that happened almost two years ago. It has nothing to do with the light.

December 27, 2006, 12:37 pm

In the outskirts of Jacksonville there is a town called “Switzerland” and this is where you find what is known as “Ghost Light Road”. My boyfriend told me that he had been there a few times as a teen and what supposedly was to happen is that a guy on a motorcycle died drag-racing back in the 50’s or 60’s and what you do is drive down the road, park your car and watch your rearview mirror for a single headlight (his motorcycle) then as it gets closer it disappears then you look straight ahead and see the taillight as it speeds away. My boyfriend hadn’t been there for years the night we decided to go together and even though the town is a very small one,and it took about an hour to get there, he drove right to it. Well we waited and waited but nothing seemed to happen so we drove all the way home. Once we got home we both felt that something would happen if we went back so we got right back in the car and drove the hour back to the road. This time it felt completely differ! ent and didn’t quite look the same as I recalled. We drove down the road slowly, past the school and the one dirt road that goes off it, and I mentioned to Steven that it was such a clear night I bet we could see every single star, and right then out of the completely clear sky what seemed like a lightening bolt struck but it was silent and I looked over and said, oh my gawd, I bet I could point right to where that thing struck and so I pointed and Steve goes, oh my gawd Amy there it is. Right where I was pointing was a red tail light and we became very excited to actually see it and we began to speed up to catch up to it. Well, the road was winding this way and that and I became aware that I could “feel” the ghost and looked over at a lake right beside the road and just immediately knew to turn around. So I told Steven to stop the car right there and turn us around, he seemed kinda dazed and goes, Oh, yea OK Amy. So we did a 3-point turn in the middle of the dirt road a! nd there was just enough light for me to see the imprint of our tire marks in the dirt and we began heading back. Almost instantly the absolute BRIGHTEST single white light appeared in all the rear view mirrors and we were overwhelmed with the most terrifying reality that we were being followed and it was gaining on us. I looked at Steven and nervously said Geez, don’t you wish we brought someone else along, and right then the lighter FLEW out of the front console and landed between us, I picked it up and said, Its not even hot Steven. (that lighter normally had to be YANKED free from the console to use) We both looked at the speedometer and Steven said, We’re haulin’ oats Amy. We were going 80 miles per hour and the light was still gaining on us. We were terrified and felt an absolute evil all around us, and we both wanted to talk about it but later admitted we were too scared at that moment to do anything but focus on getting the heck out of there. Well, it took a goo! d 15 minutes of driving 80mph down that dirt road before we finally got to the paved part at which point the light dissappeared. It was no longer visual but the feeling that it was right there with us didn’t end until the next day. We speed all the way out to the main road. Heading back to Orange Park, we crossed the Buchman Bridge at which point I yelled to Steven, Do you hear that?? and he yelled back Yea, what is that?? and I yelled I Dunno, and tried looking in the sky, as what we heard very plainly was about 50 airplanes all at once, and I remember specifically saying it sounded like a war was going on, but there was not a single thing in the sky but stars. Well, back in Orange Park we went to bed, it was about 5:30 am at this time, Steven and I calculated we were missing about 45 minutes of time and a quarter tank of gas. But I wouldn’t let this experience rest and the next morning I INSISTED we return to Ghost Light Road. Steven didn’t want to but agreed. We we! nt down the road again and this time we travelled about 5 miles per hour, checking everything out. About 3 minutes down the road, I saw the dirt marks where we 3-point turned out of there the night before and I said, WHAT? That can’t be right Steven, there was a lake right there, I remember seeing it when we turned around, and he said I was right, but when we looked over all there was was a 3-foot wide ditch. After about 5 minutes, we reached the roads end, which outletted to a paved road. We were VERY CONFUSED because the night before, the road was very long and winding, but the next day it was straight and only about 5 minutes long going about 5-10 miles an hour. The previous night it took 15 minutes doing 80mph to get off it. Well, we returned home bewildered. About 3 weeks later, we told friends about our crazy experience, and this one girl goes, WOW you heard the planes, and I freaked out and said, yea, and she said her friend had done a college paper on the place ! and very very few people ever heard the planes. She said the place was an emergency landing strip for airplanes during a WW and after it was abandoned, they used to drag race on it and the place has always been haunted for most of the century. All I know is that it radiates the most awful evil feeling and if you visit it yourself, you should use caution and try to keep from being tranced out. Another important thing: about 3 months later I awoke at 3am crying and had a bad dream about the road. I looked over and steve was already awake and he asked if I wanted to talk about it and I said No, and he said, I just had a dream about Ghost Light Road, and I said, Oh My Gawd, I did too Steven! As it turns out, his dream was him and I going to the road, and my dream was us already there. He had the first part to the dream and couldn’t remeber the rest, I had the second part of the dream but couldn’t remember the first. And all this happened at 3am. The PRECISE time we had the ! weird experience that one night when we were there.

Thanks for reading….

*love* *light* *peace* -amy

I went to Ghostlight about 12 years ago with a few friends. We were all teens then and searched for spooky things in our spare time. We did see the lights, which were only the illusion of the cars turning at the County Road 210/Greenbriar Road junction. That was a little frightening at first but after a little investigation we understood what it truly was. When we drove back towards home however we did heard laughing and strange noises coming from the woods. It sounded like an old mans laughter and it came from all directions. We left and I never returned. We were not drunk or or drugs.

I can confirm this light. As a teen, my friends and I visited this road in Switzerland Florida at least 5 times per year if not more for about 3 years. This was a very interesting pass time. We made trips there in the daytime as well to try and figure out what we were seeing. I am not sure if the light still appears or not. There have been a lot of homes built in the area since then. It has been about 20 years since I have been there.

When we went there in the day time all we could find that may have cause a reflection was either the road sign at the other end or lights from the cars on the curved road at that end. There were no other lights or reflection devices to be found.

The story we were told, was that a young man riding a motor cycle wrecked and lost his head. He was riding up and down the road looking for his head.

I would be interested in finding out the cause of this light.

I jsut found out about this so called gohst road and asylum last night at my work. It immidiately cought my attention after hour and hours of getting information about it out of my friend. I have driven down 210 in jax thousends of times and hever never once heard of this thing untill now. Later today me and my best friend are going searching for this “ghost road” and “asylum”. Ill comment with details afterwards. And yes im bringing a digital camera and throwaway just in case.

I have been to ghost light road, a few years ago and it is real we spent about 4 hrs. out there investigating the road and we would actually go all the way to one end of the road chasing the light when it would appear. As we would make it to the end of the road the light would dissappear in front of us, and a few seconds later it would reappear behind us at the other end of the road, and looks like it is coming right at you, there is only one light not two like head lights so I know it is not a car.We were in a 93′ ford explorer sport there was about 8 people there we all saw the same thing. At one point we got out of the car and walked from about halfway down the road to the end and then back, as we walked the light appear ahead of us it would seem to come right at us then dissappear and pop up behind us like normal, as we walked back to the car the light actually popped up at both ends of the road at the same time, and the weirdest thing about it is it doesn’t actually look like a regular light it looks more like an orb but it gets really bright and the light seems to suround you, that is it doesn’t cast a shadow. Now as for if it is real or not I guess we’ll never know if what they say was real and they don’t have sightings anymore but as for me I beleive we stayed out there for like i said for 4 hrs. easy until we got ran off by the police. Who already new why we were there. Also I heard that the insane asylum that everyone is searching for is the real reason the road is haunted because it burned down w/everyone in it. I doubt this is true but maybe that is why noone knows where it is.

Ok, to clear up all the stories….I am from Jax. The light that you see is NOT a haunting. Its coming from the highway. This is a story that has been going around for years. Yes, there is a “mental” hospital down one of the dirt roads. Nothing spooky about it. This was a place teenagers hung out to freak each other out. I should know, I was one of them.

Troy says:

December 29, 2007, 11:34 am

Let me first say that I am what I call a skeptical believer. I believe in paranormal but I don’t believe everything unexplained is paranormal. Okay, so back in my high school days, I used to frequent Airport=Greenbriar=Ghostlight Road. This was when the road was all dirt except for the first little paved part right of of 13 and it was mostly a wooded area. I really don’t know how many times we went. It was very often and I can say that i saw the “Ghost Light” every time. I was usually the guy driving the car and usually the guy telling the story. The story would change depending on who was in the car. I have personally told the motorcycle story and the insane asylum story. We would always go late at night.. after midnight at least. There were no street lights there at the time. I have personally pointed at the Middle School (Switzerland Point I think it is) on the small paved section of Greenbriar and called it an insane asylum, and driving by at night in the dark in the woods it just looked like a big spooky compound. Now go to google maps and look up Greenbriar road. It is almost a perfectly straight flat road. To the west is SR13. There is another road that intersects Greenbriar almost in the middle called Roberts Rd and at the east end is 210. We would enter from 13 and drive down to Roberts Rd and stop and wait. Eventually you would see a white or a red light fade in and come toward you or go away from you. This was from passing cars on 210. 210 had a curve the would turn and come right straight at Greenbriar for a little ways and then curve once again right at Greenbriar. A car coming through the woods at and entering that straightaway would appear to “fade in” and come towards you and get brighter and then fade away after the other turn. Likewise a car going in the other direction would be a Red brake light and would travel away from you and fade away in the same fashion. You were also far enough away that the two headlights/tailights gave an appearance or just one light.I have to say it was a really cool effect and quite spooky looking even when you know what it is. On the west side where it connected to 13 was a small section of housing. People would come and go from there and it also gave the appearance of one light but it would not fade in and out as on the other side. The proof of the merger of lights to look like one was because people also lived down Roberts Rd and if you were unlucky enough to have someone drive right past you while you were scaring the car load of people you were with, it would ruin the whole illusion. This is also the reason we went so late at night. Avoid the locals on the road and you didn’t want a lot of traffic on 210. Just a car or 2 every 30 mins or so. Sorry to to tell you this particular story is FAKE.
Now Greenbriar is paved. Lots of the woods are gone. It has streetlights and I think they even re-routed 210. Ghostlight road is no longer anything other than a haunt in the mind of those who experienced it years ago. I, for one, will miss it. It’s kinda sad… But, it is fun to see the stories live on.

Back in the early 90’s my friends and I would go there at night and hide off the side of the road. When a car would come we would go out in the road then turn a flash light on and scare other teens driving on the road. As the cars got closer we turned off the flash light and ran off the road so when they got to where we were there would be nothing there. This really freaked out some people (mostly girls). One time after we had shined a light at someone and we hid when they got close they started shooting a gun into the woods. I never ran so fast in my life.

I glanced over some of the “sightings” and some of the comments of non-believers and not sure anything jives with my truths.
HERE IS THE REAL DEAL…..I’m now 35 years old and back in the late 80’s and early 90’s Greenbrier road was a completely different place.
There were no houses, paved roads, nothing but the dark woods and a 5 mile dirt road.
I KNOW WHAT MOST PEOPLE SEE as I’ve been there over 50 times and stayed my hour.
Most people see the light from either intersecting road behind them or in front of them. When a car passes Greenbriar road the headlights of the oncoming car flickers through the trees, gets brighter then dissappears as the car continues down the road(you will notice the headlights are bright white as headlights are expected to be, remember this fact). THAT’S PRETTY OBVIOUS IF YOU’VE BEEN THERE. THERE WAS AN ABANDONED MENTAL HOSPITAL AT THE END OF THE ROAD BACK THEN. It was a one story building and not terribly freaky is you had your wits about you. I also understand that the area was used as an airfield during WWII and there were reported crashes that also lend to the ghost stories. I never did enough research to confirm or deny the motorcycle accident of the existance of an airfield. Back in my day I also ran across hunters in pick up trucks with hunting dogs etc…I never stopped to ask what they were hunting for. I always found it wise not to approach unfamiliar people in the woods with dogs and fireams.

I’ll never forget it was the night before Easter 1991 when my best friend and another female friend of ours took our second trip out to GHOSTLIGHT ROAD. We were about a mile in turning off San Jose (or whatever the state road number is)and we were talking and chattering as high school kids would do on a “ghost hunt” when WE ALL SHUT UP AND STARED AT WHAT WAS IN FRONT OF US. Normally I would have thought what I saw was something I could explain or may have mistaken other than the fact it caught ALL OF OUR ATTENTION AT THE SAME TIME. Not 5 feet in front of us and about 5 feet off the ground was an ORANGE COLORED GLOWING BALL.
The only way I could describe it was like a basketball.
I know that’s a sorry description but most TRUE stories aren’t filled with exotic details and larger than life experiences.
TRUE stories are just something you never forget. GETTING BACK TO THE STORY….After witnessing this orange glowing floating light right in front of us, my friend hit the brights on the car in dis-belief. The orange light faded as soon as it appeared. There was nothing around us that could have caused. I even had the guts to get out of the car in utter shock and took a look around. Nothing was there. I was so moved by what I saw I woke my mom up when I got home and told her what I saw (my mom is not much of a believer and doesn’t like to be woke up). My best friend told me the next day that he was so moved and didn’t want to forget the sighting that he went home and wrote it down.
We went back probably another 48 times armed with a video camera hoping to catch something, but never saw it again.
I hope I didn’t bore you and hope you read the entire account because THIS IS TRUE. Good luck in finding your own truth. I’m not sure with all the new developement that it will ever be the same.

We live in a subdivision off Roberts Rd, which intersects Greenbrier (Ghost Road). As a bit of background, 12 years ago, when we moved in, Greenbrier was a dirt (sand) road typically not used by cars except for those that lived there.
Anyway…My 19 year old daughter just relayed her Greenbrier Rd experience to me. It happened a couple of months ago as her and my other daughter (17) were traveling west bound on 210, onto Greenbrier, from US 1. According to her, it was just after midnight; the sky was completely clear with excellent visibility (no haze, fog, etc.). As they traveled, they noticed what they thought was a motorcycle taillight ahead but oddly, the taillight wandered left and right beyond the bounds of the road. Even the light from the headlight shown into the woods at nearly a 90-degree angle. She said they were really scared because it was dark, they were along and no other cars on the road.
As they continued west towards home, the taillight disappeared. After a moment of relief, she said suddenly there was a single headlight in the rearview mirror of the Vue. She said that was really odd because, after seeing the taillight, she was constantly looking in every direction and they were completely along on the road only moments before.
She said she thought the headlight was from a car with the right bulb burned out. Thing is, she said there were no sounds of a car…or, motorcycle for that matter. When she saw the right turn lane appear to turn onto Roberts Rd., she did quickly as she was totally freaked. As she moved over, she expected the light to pass on the left. When she looked, the light wasn’t there; it wasn’t behind and wasn’t ahead – it had disappeared. To this day, she is so spooked by the experience, she can hardly talk about it and said just the thought resurrects the feeling of evil she had that night.
I’m typically a skeptical person but after hearing her story and seeing too many other similar posts, I’m a believer.

Its an illusion. We (bunch of us from Trinity c/o ’92-’93) used to go there almost every weekend to scare the bejeezus outta someone. It is because its is a perfectly straight dirt road and at the end of it is a road that is also perfectly straight and long and curves just as It would intersect the dirt road. So it looks like a light is comming at you for a long time then it suddenly disappears. Then occasionally a red tail light will do the same (people going the opposite direction on the road). Plus its reaaaallly long which due to jax being so flat you can see forever so you get all sorts of illusions from the light being so far away you can hardly see it. Ive drove up and down that road dozens of times, Guaranteed to see the light (since theres guaranteed to be a car going down that road at some point) It was the best spot for “parking”. I’m pretty sure my daughter was conceived there ;). Not too far away is a cool black church in the town of Switzerland. It wasnt haunted either but we told everyone it was and freaked out alot of people there too.

Jax Resident says:

January 27, 2009, 2:18 am

I’ve been down Greenbriar/210 probably a good 3 or 4 dozen times, and have been spooked at times because it is a very, very, long and straight road, and late at night there aren’t any other vehicles around, simply woods.

The road of the old insane asylum, which is now a Christian Retreat for the mentally handicapped, is about 200 yards or so before (if you’re coming from Roberts, otherwise if you’re coming from 95 it’s after the light on the right) the light to turn onto SR-210 West. There’s a mailbox right at the road, and if you’re coming from 95, it’s just after a yellow road sign.. You can’t miss it, it’s a pretty wide dirt road. It is VERY freaky at night, and if you turn your lights off it is INSANELY Dark.

About a quarter mile down, you can see the buildings of the retreat, and there’s a fork in the road where the left side is blocked off with a metal chain.

I just went down this road last night for the first time, and when we got to the end, I didn’t know where I was going so I went right instead of turning around in the fork in the road to the left.. Well my friend told me to stop immediately before we went onto the premises, and I did. So we were closer than he’d ever been before, and we looked and two of the buildings still had lights on. One of the windows in a building was illuminated with a solid, bright red color, and we saw shadows moving inside the building (it’s still an active retreat). While it wasn’t a ghost, it’s still extremely freaky to be down that road at night, especially when you see something like a red window and figures inside… We got the hell out of there not 15 seconds after seeing that. It’s definitely a worthwhile trip to make if you live in the area.

I’ve heard that since all of the “sightings” the road has changed and you no longer see the light, but I would still like to go. What would be the best way to get there from Mandarin? The story is as follows.A man escaped a mental institution or a prison not sure which one back than n the day. He took one of the drs and or nurses motorcycle and tryed to escape. he lost control of the boke and he ran into barb wire or something to that affect and was decapitated. when you go down the road, the light is at the end of the road. you keep looking and its getting closer and closer and closer.before you know it goes right through your car and you see it behind you. and it keeps going this way back and forth b/c the dead guy is trying to find his way off this road. anyway thats what i heard. i grew up in jacksonville. went out there two or three times. last time i went out there it wasnt pretty. a bunch of teenagers who lived in the area were either drunk or high and decided to go scare some of us kids that came out there. they had a big truck with big wheels and a light looked like it was lights on top of a police car. finally they cornered us on the road knocked us into a ditch. somehow we got out and drove off to call the cops. to this day i really dont believe these guys would have let us go. cause when we got out of the ditch they ended up getting stuck on tht dirt road side ways. we never went back there again

OK, let me just state this now, I have lived in Jacksonville my entire life, and when I was a teenager, I would try to find little things like this and see if they were real or not, this one, by far, is WAY OFF. it was the light from cars turning at 210 and Greenbrier that people would see, not some orb or ghoul or whatever you want to think. They have since then fixed that crooked turn-off and there hasn’t been anything since. So sorry guys, this ones busted.

I have been down this road many times and have even went to school near the road and have had plenty of expiriances with this ord of light, and have read debunking reveiws and have debunked the truth myself. The only thing i cant explain is a light in my rear veiw mirror that i could not see behind me when i turned my head, this also might be a natural phenomina or a super natural phenomina, its your choice to decide.

I really hope you were patient and vigilant enough to make it past all those posts from 3 years ago of the people trying to start what sounded more like a ghost hunter swingers club then staying on the topic all of us searched for to arrive at this site in the first place. If you did, then congrats because no, you’re not crazy, what you saw years ago on that God forsaken road really did happen. The dirt roads in Florida are being paved over all the time, everyday. Unfortunatly, this, along with woods being turned into subdivisions, could be altering or extinguishing ghosts/lost spirits claimed haunting grounds. I’m afraid Ghost Light Rd/Greenbriar may not be an exception, but a victim. It seems like from what I read in more current posts that anyone going to try and see the headless motorcycle man (sounds funny doesn’t it!) today may be years to late. But the ones who were lucky enough to experience it years ago, well, it’s just something we’ll never ever forget. The story told to me was a man escaped one night from the mental hospital, stole a motorcycle, drove through barb wire and was decapitated. He rides his motorcycle up and down the road looking for his head. Whatever. Who knows right? The origin didn’t really matter to me, still doesn’t. What does matter is what I saw with my own, sane, 20/20 vision, husband with 2 kids, masters degree in education eyes that night on July 4th weekend 1995. My roommate and I drove our friend who was born and raised in Jacksonville home for the holiday from college to visit her folks. That night she said do you want to go see a ghost? Her folks started laughing and said be prepared to freak out!! Once again, whatever, especially when on the way she said it doesn’t happen every night. So my expectations were very low to begin with. When we got to the dirt road, she said turn here so we were facing east. It was SO dark outside and I just couldn’t believe, for as long as the road was, how odd it was that we were the only ones on it. I understand that that’s not the case today. Apparently there’s much more traffic on the road now. However that night, that night we were totally isolated. I remember her saying to stop the car and flash our lights. I remember thinking, yeah flash our lights so somebody down the road knows that we’re here, can walk out of the woods, swing a Coleman lantern around and then turn it off. That’ll be our “ghost.” We sat there for awhile. Easily 30min and nothing. Then right when we decided to give up, you guessed it, a single headlight appeared in the distance. Not like an on/off switch, but more like turning on a white flourescent lightbulb, how it kinda stutters and then it’s on. To big to be a Coleman, but definatly big enough to be the size of a motorcycle headlight shining right at us from the opposite side of the road on the horizon what looked like a half mile away. I read what people put about if lights are seen, then it’s traffic coming from around a bend near SR 201. Got it, however, here’s the twist!!!! My roomate fired up the car, I thought we just saw what we came to see and were leaving, but instead he started driving toward it, and people I swear on my kids that it started driving toward us!!! I remember it vividly too, the actual light itself bouncing, flickering, like an old headlight would of a motorcycle bulb built in that time traveling down a rough dirt road at a fairly fast speed. (Nope, we weren’t going 5mph and I promise you neither was the ominous light. We were both traveling toward each other around 35-45mph.) If it was a car going around a bend, it would’ve disappeared like a headlight would going around a corner. It didn’t, the headlight got bigger. If it was a car, one headlight would’ve turned into two and we would’ve met in the middle. We didn’t. At the point I thought for sure we were going to meet, sorry if I dissapoint someone but no, it didn’t seem to pass through our car and we could then turn around and see a tailight. If that happened to you then you can write about it. In our case it just dissapeared about 50yards in front of us. This time, just like a light switch. Off. We poceeded to freak out, say a bunch of cuss words, stop the car and turn around!!! When we got back to where we started, I don’t know why, but we turned back around, sat there again, flashed our lights, waited, and then yes…there it was again. We just had to see if it could happen twice. We didn’t travel down the road and try and meet it again. I just said let’s go and we traveled the hour back home in total silence. I really do get people talking about the traffic on the other end of the road. I just have to say this one more time to be clear, we moved toward the light and it started moving toward us sharing the same road and the single light was just..poof..gone 50yards from out car. If the ghost is no longer there, then I hope that means he finally found peace. But when he was there, I saw him, and if you saw him too, then forget all the haters on here that were maybe born to late to witness it for themselves, because now you know that you’re not alone.

Oh…and PS Mr. Murray you said it’s been ‘debunked’ by other people, including yourself? However, you failed to say how you or they did it or the evidence you or they collected. I’m not saying you didn’t, but you described what I saw almost perfectly and said in ‘all reality’ I didn’t see it. Seemed pretty real to me. Going to school near there and traveling up and down the road isn’t quit enough data for me. If someone said they saw a 6ft talking mouse and that it was real, telling the person you went to school next to Disney so take my word on it, it’s not real, isn’t quite going to cut it, right? But if I pulled that mask off and showed the person inside the costume, well then, now we’re talking!! This is really for anybody, if someone reputable has figured this mystery out and I missed the reveal, please share it so I can stop telling this story!!!

I am less concerned about the stupid light, and more concerned about the stupidity of some of you. Learn how to spell. Some of you type as if you weren’t offered a K-12 education for free. I don’t know where you come up with the way you spelled some of your words, but that is not how it is spelled in any of the dictionaries I’ve ever used. It will be useless to reply to this if you’re offended, because I won’t be checking the web site just to come back to more comments with incorrectly spelled words. Typos are one thing, being an idiot is just sad. Also, I understand that some people have problems such as dyslexia, but there is such a thing as spell check.

I have been to Ghost light road when I was a teenager (about 20 years ago). I have seen some crazy things there along as everyone I knew. It was a popular place when I went to school. The last I heard the road has all types of homes and what-not. When I used to go there, nothing was there but a long dirt road.

Hal Jackson, former DJ says:

May 16, 2010, 3:28 pm

It was the early 80â??s and I was working as a DJ in Green Cove Springs at then WKUE-FM (92K, an album rock station). A couple of girls came by the radio station and told us about the mysterious and spooky light that appeared and unexplainably vanished on a long, straight dirt road.
I didnâ??t give it much thought, but my DJ friend Dean Richards was curious enough to convince me to go along with them. He volunteered to drive us, although I wasnâ??t sure if it was just so we could ride off with the girls.
It was a very foggy night when we reached the dirt road, and just the header of it had asphalt. Both sides of the road were littered with trash and old appliances. We drove down the road and it seemed like there was a dim red light ahead that looked like a tail light, but with the fog we couldnâ??t be sure. The girls apologized to us and said it must be because of the fog. I reasoned that it must be because the story was false. No harm done. My co worker was the one who wasted the gas to get there.
A few nights later my friend got the idea that we should investigate the area again, and this time it was a very clear night. He offered to drive and brought his wife with him this time. I figured all I had to lose was time.
When we turned into the road we could clearly see what looked like a red tail light. The light seemed to contain energy in its center because it grew to a bright headlight or resembled an ongoing headlight of a train. While watching this happen we all felt a creepy feeling. Just as soon as the light, appeared and grew brighter it suddenly disappeared. We drove slowly toward the darkness when my friend said, â??look, itâ??s behind us!â?? I turned around and saw the same red light from the direction we came from. It grew into another white light and hovered in the center of the road. Again, it suddenly vanished. The red light again appeared in front of us and stayed lit. We looked behind us and saw different lights. A red neck driving a pick-up truck headed toward us and we flagged him down. We asked him if he had heard about the strange light and he said he didnâ??t. We pointed to the red light that was hovering in the center of the road in front of us. â??It must be tail lights!â? he reasoned. We all shook our heads no and explained to him that the light would grow and become white and look like a train or headlight. No sooner did we say that and our prediction came true. Suddenly, without warning the light disappeared, and the red light once again was in the opposite direction. After a short time, the light energized and got brighter.
â??Iâ??m gonna find out what that sob isâ? the redneck said and he got into his pickup truck and took off as fast as his truck would drive heading straight for the light. We decided to join him. Surely, we would catch up to the light. It wasnâ??t as far back tracking as it was in the other direction.
As we raced toward the light it became brighter and quickly vanished without a trace. There was nothing in the road ahead as we reached the entrance. We thought maybe someone turned down a side road but there was no side road. We pulled over, talked some more and exchanged ideas about what we thought it was. The road was now dark and the show was over. What did we see?

The story doesnâ??t end here. I continued to visit the strange light over 30 times. Each time I brought someone new to show them what I saw and try to get their explanation. Before each visit I explained that we may see nothing because I didnâ??t want them to think I was some kind of crackpot. Each time the light didnâ??t disappoint us and gave us a variety of activity. Some visits more happened than others, but it always started as the red light and usually the light would grow into the white beacon.
Some thought it was the angle of the paved road that curved at the end of the road, but the other side didnâ??t curve, so it didnâ??t explain it. Others said that it used to be an old airfield and that somebody must be doing the lights to scare people. That made no sense. It was suggested that it was some form of gasses coming out of the ground. Why the different colors then?
In all my visits I never came up with a logical conclusion. Just that this was freaky and something I never saw before or since. I ended up moving out of town a number of years but came back. By this time my children were enrolled in Bartram Trails High School. The spooky road was now paved, and I travelled on it in the daytime, but never really went at night to see if the light was still there. If it is it would just blend in with the rest of the traffic now. The unusual thing about it back in the early 80â??s was it was an undeveloped area and remote. There was no reason for the lights to have that much activity.
I know there are a lot of questions about the validity of this phenomenon, but I can personally attest to the fact that indeed it was real, and there were countless of witnesses who saw what I saw. I tried to get an answer to what the light was for years until I gave up.
Iâ??m not saying the road is haunted or that I have any explanation to the strange happenings other than to say it was real.

Well… I was watching this show called Mystery Hunters and the person on there was doing a thing on something like that. She had 2 people to help her. And she just found out that it was the cars on another street causing it. The car lights were reflecting off the road and causing the light to spook people. So I don’t believe that this is paranormal. I just think there is a reasonable explanation for why this is happening.

Hal Jackson says:

August 19, 2010, 7:12 pm

Nope, we checked that out. It wasn’t the reflection. Believe me I WANTED to explain it. I finally gave up though.

It was (now there is too much traffic interfering) from cars on the road at the end which was practically straight on from the dirt road then turns off. It was a pretty long road and the headlights you saw were way off. So far that 2 headlights always just looked like a single light and it flickered quite a bit. The taillight you saw after it would disappear was either a car behind you going the opposite direction or the artifact light you see after starting intently at the spooky light ahead of you. Amazingly despite taking dozens of people to see it and explaining to them what it was, several to this day are still convinced it was a real ghost. Interestingly all those who believe it was an actual ghost also believe in a myriad of ridiculous conspiracy theories and religious phenomenon like crying statues and 2012 end of the world ****. Anyone with a solid grip on reality could clearly understand exactly what the source of the light was. To Angela who was ‘cornered by drunken teens in a big truck’ I apologize as that was probably us. We partied on that road nearly every weekend messing with the ghost hunters. I have stayed on the road from sunset to sunrise several times, seen the light hundreds if not thousands of times (for ever car that came down 210) and I’m telling you there was never any real ghost. Hell even the story itself should tell you its fake. I mean its a classic right out of the book of fake ghost story with hardly any thought put into it. Greenbriar used to be a dirt road from Roberts/Longleaf to 210. Right at that spot where 210 is now a straight on intersection it used to just curve south right at the spot Greenbriar hits it. So a car (the ghost light) would be coming and you could see it for a long time cause its a long straight road. And there was a bit of illusion to it since it was so far off in the distance it was practically at the limit of your vision. Then when the car rounded the curve south on 210 the light would disappear. Everyone would freak out and look behind and sure enough either the red artifact from staring at the distant light for so long, or another car going the opposite direction toward 13, usually having come from Roberts/Longleaf. On one occasion we did almost ‘catch the light’ which turned out to be another car. And I believe this may be the incident Angela was referring to. We were going to drive through it and sped up way faster than is safe for a dirt road. We ended up swerving around after realizing it was another car and lost control and got stuck sideways in the road. I think we ran the other car off the road so Im pretty sure that was us Angela was referring to. Again I apologize, though I wasn’t driving so technically wasnt my fault.

Jason says:

September 26, 2010, 6:20 am

Also of note is that the proper way to view the light was by traveling West to East (13 to 210) since the light was the oncoming cars on 210. And usually you didn’t start the search till you hit the dirt road part. If you came from 210 toward 13 you could possibly see a light coming from further up Greenbriar toward 13 but would eventually pass it and realize it was a car if it didnt turn onto Roberts/Longleaf whereas the cars on 210 would curve south right as it intersected with Greenbriar and ‘disappear’. Surely a light traveling toward you on a perfectly straight road with no turn offs and just disappears must be a ghost right?! So its not surprising so many people believed it was a ghost.

Hi Jewel – Thanks for replying to my request. Do you know anything about the local police asking for an investigation into the “Light” during the middle 1980’s? Apparently there were so many calls to the police about the light that they sought help from a group of scientists. I don’t know of the outcome of the investigation. Concerning the old airport, when I was in high school in Jacksonville we would drag race out there….just a bunch of crazy kids-ha. Why am I so interested in the “Light” – On our high school graduation night my two best friends were on a motorcycle on that road and had a horrible accident and they both died. It may sound crazy but I wonder if the “Light” could be one of them somehow stuck in that time period?

I live in Ft Myers FL and Ive learned that either a person believes in the spirit world or they don’t. I was taking photos of some furniture I was selling and when I looked at the photos you can distinctly see ten small orbs and one VERY large orb over my bed and that they were moving from place to place. I dont ask anyone to believe me..I know FOR A FACT and I dont need anyones approval on what I saw..I live with it everyday. Some people wouldnt believe in a spirit if it knocked em on their butt. The spirit is a soul of someone who once lived a human existence. The human body is a vessel for the soul..when the body (vessel) dies the soul moves on. Its like a glass of drop the glass and it breaks..the water doesnt moves on to a different place. The most beautiful gift we can experience is knowing that those we love that have moved on before us remain with us in part. There will always be those people who refuse to believe in the spiritual rhelm. Their minds are closed to anything that they cant see or touch and thats really sad for them. I KNOW WHAT I SAW..I DONT NEED ANYONE TO SAY YES OR NO..I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY..I still have the photos if anyone wants to see for themselves but if you want to look at them just to tell me Im crazy please keep it to yourself. I guess none of us will know until we actually die will we ?? Or will we ?

Sandra says:

July 20, 2012, 11:05 am

I should add that I always heard that animals are super perceptive of spirits. Before I actually saw the orbs in the photos I took I noticed that my dog..a 4 yr old boxer..would sit at night and stare into the dark room. Her head moved left..right and up. She was staring at something and refused to enter into the dark room even when I tried to get her to. She is not a dog that spooks easily but there was something she was looking at that frightened her that I couldnt see. Im sure now that she was watching the Orbs that I had taken with my digital camera a few days later. She would lie on the floor and stare up at the dark ceiling..then look left and then right as if watching something moving around the room. Many times Id get up and look, not seeing anything made me feel a little spooked but I knew that she saw something and it scared her. After I took the photos in my room and actually caught the eleven orbs on camera I knew what she had been seeing. I have been in contact with a reputable medium and she has verified what I already knew. I also want to say that I have had some psychic abilities for over 40 years and after I saw the orbs I used spirit rods to contact them. I was only able to ask for YES and NO responses as I dont have an EVP recorder. I definately got responses to my questions. With that said..before anyone ever tries to communicate with any type of spirits it can be extremely dangerous. You can open a vortex (doorway) that can allow many evil spirits to come thru as well as good ones. YOU HAVE TO CLEAN YOUR OWN THOUGHTS AND SAY PRAYERS FOR PROTECTION.YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN THE POWERS OF GOD AND JESUS CHRIST AND ASK FOR ONLY GOOD,CLEAN SPIRITS OF GOD TO COME THROUGH. Im not a nut case..I know what Im talking about..and stay away from Quija boards..they are not a toy and can open up things that can harm you. Always know what you are doing..laugh at me if you choose but I know what Im saying.

I went through my entire teenage and young adult years as a non-believer. That was changed in October 1990 when i heard unexplained voices, twice telling me to leave the house I just purchased. Oddities continued for quite some time, the kids were not only scared but fearful as well. I eventually remodeled and all the oddities went away.
Then in June of 2007 I bought a townhouse in Jacksonville, not to far from Ghost Light Road. Soon after I experienced shadows traveling across my front door foyer. Living alone I never told a ANYONE! Though was always diligent watching for the shadows when I had guests over. I happen to have a date over in December 2008, when she says, ” Do you know you have shadows?” OMG someone else sees them as well. I felt so relieved. We continued to see them for quite some time. They never bothered us, however they liked to toy with the cats.
Anyways…one night around 2:00am we were heading home from Shands Pier traveling on Greenbriar and saw an ominous mass. We both looked at each other and said “Did you see that?” We both did, however when we discussed turning around for another look, we both decided we should not as the mass was roughly 10′ high, 4′ wide and was a dark black shadow. We traveled that same route several times and have not seen the mass or any orbs since then.
