Ghost Road

07.23.2005 | 12:38 pm | Chesterton, Indiana, United States

About one hundred years ago a woman left her young son with a baby-sitter and when she returned, her home was ablaze. Frantically, she ran inside to try to find her son, but only found the baby-sitter. The woman searched the woods around her house for her baby. So overcome with grief was she, that the woman died of a heart attack. If one drives to Ghost Road and parks, he may see the woman–a whitish-blue light hiding behind trees. She may also be seen rocking in a chair in a field across the road.

  12. Ghost Rd. is actually 1050 N., between 50 W. and Meridian Rd. That story started in 1968 when some teens played a prank on others who were parking there.
The teen victims got so scared, they went back to chesterton and told a group of people. The news spread like a wildfire, and suddenly there were a hundred people out there looking for the ghost of the lady.
It actually got so out of hand people were out there with guns and some juveniles with axes were stoped by police. I guess they thought they were going to kill the ghost, which I thought was pretty stupid, since a ghost is already dead.
Anyway, the police ended up closing off the road to prevent anyone getting hurt by the band of ghost chasers.
I was in 8th or 9th grade when this happened and it was big news in the paper. In fact, several years ago, a British Broadcast company made a documentary of the story and interviewed some of the local residents. I don’t know if it ever aired on TV or not, but that’s the story.

  13. I used to go down 1050 N in chesterton all the time. If I’m not mistaken it used to be a long stretch of a gravel road. Today it is black topped, but when it was gravel my b/f and I would go down the road almost every night and we would always see bright lights come up on the back of the car and then disappear. I’ve even seen the lights spin off into the air. This might be a different road but I looked back in my diary because i wrote the address down and that is what my diary said.

  14. no offense but that is one of the most retarded scary stories ever……………srry but thats the truth

  15. This story did happen. Now how true it is may be another story.
I will back up what John Dobbins said on 06.12.2006.
When I was stationed over in South East Asia in 1968-69 my wife at the time sent
me an article from the Chesterton Trib about this story. We both grew up in Chesterton.
As a matter of fact we used to park “romantically” on that very road when it was a gravel road. I even double dated and drank a few beers at that site.
The location was 1050 North and ended at 50 west. Going west beyond that was just a farmers corn field. I don’t believe that this story is real. If you do, I have another story about a crazy man that frequents parking “romantic” places and has a three pronged hook with a killer instinct. Dan B, yesbliss@hotmail.com

  17. My boyfriend who lives in Chesterton told me about this place, so we decided to go since im doing a paper on paranormal and superstition. We just came back from there. we took some pictures with my digital camera and we noticed whitish-blue balls of light in EVERY picture. NOT only that as soon as we got there our car got stuck in a patch of mud, when it hadn’t rained for days!!! a neighboor came and helped us push it out, then told us that he keeps an eye out because of everyone who goes there. yet he was totatly cool and HE was totaly scary but not as scary as the pics, the light got closer with everypic. and i swear, i just found this site and got chills when i read the story and that she does apear as whitish-blue light.

    scary…..be careful!!!!!

  18. I don’t care what anybody says I’ve seen the lights over a dozen times on this road, there is some kind of paranormal there. I have seen them get right up to the window of the car then dissappear. Ive even seen them go off into the fields out there. Most people won’t believe it unless they see it for themselves which is understable. The very first time i was taken down that road I didn’t believe it either. I kept telling my friends yea right, but then i seen it many times.

    Comment by jess | 10.29.2006 | 11:15 pm

  21. ya that is true although you do not get the full scared affect now that it is black topped.the road used to be gravel.another story is that the woman and her child were running from her abusive husband into the woods.the child and the mom got separated and died in the woods…the woman is still trying to find the child.many have seen a white light and a woman in a white dress.

  22. Hey, Have any of you read the gray notice box above where you type a comment? It says… and I quote, “Please use correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Now I don’t believe any (except a few) of you were using ANY of those. So please, for the sake of the language which you speak, follow those rules.

    ———————NOW—————————
As for the actual story, it is just that, a story. It is in no way the truth, if you believe that it is true… go ahead and check. Yes, it could inded be deemed “Scary”, but it is in no way true.

  24. I grew up just a quarter-mile from Ghost Road. It is that portion of 1050 North between 50 West and Meridian Road in Liberty Township.

The story is attributable to a prank played out in 1968 and described above. At that time the road had one house on the south side own by Mr. Bushore (who drove a bus for the Duneland School District). There is a very shallow swampy area south of the the road about halfway between 50 West and Meridian…more towards 50 West than Meridian. If lights are flashed off the swampy area at night and the night cools enough to create light fog, then you can get some really neat light effects when viewing from the road.

At the time the prank occurred, 1050 North west of 50 west was dirt with a tree growing in the middle of it, and that part between 50 West and Meridian Road was essentially dirt with a bit of gravel.

  25. haha i dont believe this one.
it would be a better story
if they said like you could see the women running throughout the woods looking for her child
why would she be rocking in a chair?
    or hiding behind trees.

im over at annies with alexis!
not that any of you know who the hell they are!

  26. Some of the posters here need to spend more time getting educated and less time ghost hunting. The spelling is what’s frightful.

  27. I was a teenager in Chesterton at the time this horrific tragedy was supposed to have happened. The story has grown over the years, and though a great tale to tell the kids, it never happened. There are documented homes in the Chesterton area, however, that have proven to be haunted. Try researching the old “Bratcher Home” or ask a “local” about “Diana of the Dunes!” Now there are some ghost stories!

  28. Yikes! I am really amazed at the poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation on this site. The credibility of the entries with errors is definitely in question. The mentality of some of you is quite obvious in your writing.
As for the story itself, well….
