Reenie–I didn’t work this weekend due to a conflict in my schedule. I wish I had. I prefer to do expanded tours and will answer all questions if I can. After the tours usually my guests stay to talk to me. It’s a 1 1/2 hour tour, but people have been known to stay and talk for at least another hour! In fact, I can’t think of one tour I have done where people haven’t asked for more info.

A couple of girlfriends and I visited Glensheen about 3 weeks ago…..Absolutely beautiful place!! I would recommend it to anyone, our tour guide wasn’t the greatest though, she kept checking her cell phone for texts:(……we opted to take the expanded tour and saw the entire house. What a great trip! (None of us felt any ghostly presence while there though)

Kortney–what day of the week were you there? I can’t imagine a tour guide having the time to check her phone–but I apologize. I am very sorry for that!!

Me and my wife just toured the mansion last week. It is full of beautiful artifacts and the finest hand crafted items of the early 2oth century. I immediately related to the mansion on many levels and could almost imagine the excitement and happiness that revolved around this family as they planned out thier mansion to the finest details. They were trully generous people and probably deserved everything they had. They were rich but they shared thier wealth with others. I could almost feel as if I were there 100 years ago. It is a step back into time. Our tour guide (I forgot her name) Was the nicest lady and was very knowledgable about the history of the Congdons and thier estate and shared many interesting facts. Definately a place to visit if you are in the area.

Now…about the so called hauntings. It seems that a lot of these feelings many of you have experienced are self fufilling prophecies. If you go into the mansion with a predetermined set of mind, of course you will see or feel things…BECAUSE YOU ALREADY ARE LOOKING FOR IT!

I found out about the tragedies that took place there just after the tour was over. I went into the mansion without any preconcieved notions of paranormal activities and I noticed nothing. I was even the last one trailing the group and was in many of the rooms by myself most of the time, including the last one on the landing AND the last one out of Elizabeth Congdons bedroom. And I noticed nothing out of the ordinairy. Why? Because I wasnt looking for anything out of the ordinary. Wake up people, seriously. And to the girl who saw an old lady in the room that started talking to her and suddenly disappeared…lol…sweetie, seriously, no more scary movies before bedtime…AND dont foget to take your medication! lol….give me a break. The property is a great historic place generously donated by a the Congdons for us to enjoy and maybe learn a little bit about thier legacy and a little bit about history. It would be unwise to visit the mansion to experience “a haunting” and ignore the true value of of what really matters.

I went to the mansion a few years ago. And I felt no such thing of any ghosts, the only thing I felt was excitment and happieness! The place is absolutly AMAZING!!! I want to go back so bad, which I’m sure I will someday since I do live in Duluth. I went with my school and we got the whole tour! I even went in the attic and basement and I swear I didn’t feel anything! I think that the house is gorgeous! It’s a very sad story of the murders, but I don’t think Elizabeth or her nurse is still there. The murders of the house is obviously what attracks some poeple to the house but if you haven’t been there, go there and just take in the warm feeling and the history of the fasinating house! It is also my dream to be married there!!! Well it felt good to share my thoughts on the mansion, I hope people will feel what I feel about the place of they ever go there.

We were visiting the mansion on a Saturday, later morning. Even though we did have kind of a lacking tour guide, I still would love to go back again.

We took a tour of the mansion back in 1991. It was towards the end of the tour, we were coming down back stairway, from second floor to first. My 4 year old son, tire and crying, was falling behind tour group. The rest of the group had gone all the way down stairs but my son stopped on landing between floors.I grabbed his hand and preceeded down stairs, as I got to the bottom of staircase, a little old woman, wearing what appeared to be a white dress with a black apron came around corner at bottom of staircase. She looked at my son and said “whats wrong with you honey.” as she pinched his cheek. I grabbed his hand and hurried down hall, into kitchen, to catch up with group. Glancing back, as I entered kitchen, the woman was gone. At the time I knew nothing of murders. After the tour I tried to find this little old lady, but she was no where to be found.

My comment–no female killed anyone there and no maid was killed either. The man who killed the nurse and Miss Elisabeth was married to Miss Elisabeth’s oldest daughter. That daughter was in Colorado at the time of the murders. Many believe that she masterminded the whole plot because of her desire for more money, but that was never proven. I urge you all to find a copy of the book: WILL TO MURDER. That will answer your questions, though we may never know the complete truth. It’s fascinating.

The woman we met in the back staircase was sure dressed as a maid. I had a real wierd feeling in her presence. She was there one minute and gone the next.If this place is not haunted, it sure is a mystery to me.

the woman was in her 70’s and was supposably killed by her son-in-law. They could never link her adopted daughter to the murders and the son-in-law never admitted to the murders. He later killed himself in prison still swearing he didn’t kill his mother-in-law and her nurse. Many believe her adopted daughter marjorie killed her and framed her husband. Marjorie has been linked to the murder of her 3rd husband but enough evidence was never presented to try her.

I used to live on the grounds of this house. My father was the director of the museum from when ownership was turned over to UMD till the mid ’90’s. We lived in the coachmans quarters. Fantastic place to grow up, but there are certain places in the house that always gave me the creeps such as the main staircase…. weird to see so many people have heard of Marge…

to Nathans coment, “Past grounds keepers have even kept many of the bones in drawers in their quarters.” I played at the cemetary and along the creek all throughout my childhood. The cemetary is on high ground approximatly 40-50 feet above the lake. While it is true that the ground is eroding the outer fence for the cemetary is still standing next to the bluff. No bones ever washed up during the time I lived there… As far as I know there were only 2 groundskeepers at Glennsheen, Bob Wyness (who passed a few years ago R.I.P.) and his father. When UMD took over a few more were added Phil and Dan are the only two names I remember. But it has been almost 20 years since I lived there so alot may have changed. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me

Brendan–that is fascinating!! I heard that the director used to live on the premises, but I never met anyone who did. How neat!! I’d love to learn a lot more from you. I’m not sure how to give you my email address. Where do you live now?

Actually, Miss Elisabeth was 83. Roger, the confessed murderer, killed himself after being released from prison even though he confessed. There are still many questions to be answered and only Marjorie can answer them. To my knowledge, Marjorie was not on the premises during the murders. She was in Colorado, but many believe she was the mastermind to the crimes. In November of 2008 (last month), Marjorie pleaded guilty to attempted forgery in the case of a “homeless” (but rich) man she befriended in Arizona. He mysteriously turned up dead when she apparently tried to get his money. She had his body cremated immediately, so they can’t charge her for murder.

I promise to be any help as I was very young when I lived there. my room was the right 2nd floor window as you look at the coachmans quarters. Perhaps you can tell me if anyone from about 20 years ago is still on staff? I remember a Phil on grounds crew and Dan Mclleand who was some sort of maintance or grounds as well. I would love to speak to you about the house though!
