Me and my wife visited the mansion on our honeymoon 5 years ago..We were very excited to go in the beautiful house…As we walked around the house with the tour group we started to walk up the stairs…As soon as I passed the bench that is half-way up the stairs I had a huge feeling of sadness…It bothered me the whole day…I didn’t say anything to my wife..Well 3 years later I was watching T.V show with Dominic Dunne..It was a show about wealthy people that were murdered…Well the show was about Glensheen…As I was watching they said that one of the woman that were murdered was found right by that bench….That freaked me out

I went on a tour of the mansion last year and while I was in the laundry room in the basement, I peeked into the closet on the far right, and i swear i saw a women in a white dress holding a bucket walk behind the door. Tt scared the **** ouot of me so I ran back to my mom who was in the hallway in the basement. I was going to ask the tour guide about it, but I didn’t.

I just want questions answered and need help. I went to the Congdon Mansion when I was in the sixth grade and had never heard of any of them before. I lived in Hopkins so was never in the mansion before. The tour guide who was in the back of the hallway ( outside of the dining room)announced we would be going to a specific room, I was ahead in the line, I started walking up stairs to the room leading everyone, although we were no where near or headed towards the steps. The tour guide asked me how I knew where to go, I did not know nor did I remember leading the way…Earlier, I noticed something else odd. In front of ther blue room hangs a picture on a wall, of a girl , with a cat, I hear it is a drawing of the artists own daughter( not a Congdon), she looks exactly like me, I even thought it was a mirror for a while, the events were strange but I ignored them. When I was thirty -seven, I took my kids to the mansion to show them the picture that looks just like me, they were shocked. We took pictures on my cell phone in the back of the house, because we forgot our camera at home and live in St.paul. The pictures were taken on the bridge in the back over a creek, on the way to the cemetary by the water. I do not know how to text, but received a text days later in the middle of the night one night . I do not know anyone here, we moved here from Holland in 2002, the phone is only for emergencies and to call 911 and keep in touch with my kids as I am a single mother, the text that was sent to me was sent by no one, it could not be traced back by T-Mobile, it added one of the pictures I had taken of my youngest daughter on the bridge, it also added an olde ring tone I used months before but had since switched, it was the sound of a stream… It added a phone number that made no sense, I was told the area code was Duluth but can not get that validated, it also added a strange message of spaces, numbers, symbols and exclamation points and question marks… I don’t even know now how to get those things on my phone. T- mobile can’t explain it to me, no one can, I saved the message and the added picture and ring tone the way it was sent, it also added itself to my contact list, with the message and picture attached… How the heck does this happen? Are the spirits trying to tell me something? I was adopted as a child, my name is short for Elisabeth, I have worked in the Nursing field most of my life, I look like the picture upstairs, and twice that day ( the day we went to the mansion) we nearly crashed our car, once a sudden rain storm came up as we were turning a corner, and I lost visability, as two semi trucks were passing us, and another time some crazy lady ran us off the road even though we were alone on the road with her, except for one other car, we think she was drunk or day dreaming… I just think there are alot of similarities here, maybe we were suppossed to know or do something… Anyone who wants to see the message, and can maybe tell me how a number that does not exist can not only call me in the middle of the night, but add it’s own personal ringtone, and a picture from my own phone as it’s own message, and can add a message, then save itself to my contacts list as well… my God, please, I would love a better explanation than the one I am thinking of now…. I have saved the phone even though it is no longer in service, you are free to see it… please do!!!!!

I have no explanation but would be interested in seeing your picture because I volunteer at Glensheen and see the portrait to which you are referring all the time. If you want to put your email address here I will contact you.

My husband and I were at the mansion today. They guides do not talk about the murders out of respect for the family. They only want to portray the history, beauty and construction of the home. I asked the guide why they don’t talk about the murders and she said that yes Elizabeth and her nurse were murdered, but they don’t want to portray the mansion as a haunted house or talk negatively about any of the family. She said we could purchase books (if we wanted to know about that) in the gift shop that is located in the old stables. We took the extended, full tour which is a little more expensive, but this is the only tour where they will take you up to the third floor and the attic. We also were taken to the lowest level (or basement). Although I am normally open to paranormal feelings and sightings, I did not experience any of that on our tour of this home. I had been told by a friend that you can still see blood stains in the wood and a couple of the steps where the wood is exposed. They cannot remove it, as once soaked into wood like that, you can’t get it completely out. My husband and I did in fact find two steps that looked like they had blood drops on them, and then on the landing, the base of the railing has dark stains that looks like it may have been blood running down in rivulets. From my understanding, reading two of the books, it was very bloody where the nurse was murdered. The books I purchased are: “Glensheen’s DAUGHTER – The Marjorie Congdon Story”, by Sharon Darby Hendry; and “Will to Murder – The True Sto0ry Behind The Crimes & Trials Surrounding The Glensheen Killings”, by Gail Feichtinger with John DeSanto & Gary Waller.

So glad you enjoyed your tour! I have not been able to give tours in a few weeks because of scheduling conflicts and then laryngitis, but I really miss it. I would recommend reading “Glensheen’s Daughter” first to get the quicker version (more like a novel), and then reading “Will to Murder,” which is much more in depth and also includes the most up-to-date information about Marjorie. There is one error I caught in Glensheen’s Daughter. The author states that the girls (Marjorie and Jennifer) were raised with a yacht. In fact, the yacht was destroyed in an explosion at least 15 years before the girls were born. Minor point, but I thought I’d mention it.

Thank you for visiting Glensheen!

actually it was her husband Roger Caldwell. not her fiance. and Elisabeth was suffocated with a pillow in her bedroom. and the nurse was hit in the back of her head by a candle holder on the stair case. and their adopted daughter was diagnosed as a sociopath at a young age. so i doubt it was Roger that killed them. i think it was the Daughter. Marjorie Mannoring Congdon.

“i think it was the Daughter. Marjorie Mannoring Congdon.”

Marjorie was in Colorado at the time of the murders. She could not have actually killed her mother or the nurse.

For those of us old enough to remember this at the time it was going on,one could see “why” it is not spoken about on the tours. A very sad way for such a giving family’s legacy to be remembered, yet in a twisted way it brings more people to the mansion and thus the rest of the family’s story is told. I have toured the mansion twice, most recently taking my kids this past March. They were fascinated with it. The grounds are beautiful. The attention to detail, in a day and age when life was difficult, was amazing. These were very well read people, the elite of Minnesota. My son and I are sensitive to spirits and such. We did not get anything from the house or grounds. Would love to spend a night there and see. The most haunting part of this mansion is that (in my opinion) a killer got away with murder. I would love for her trial to be in this day and age with today’s science. She has since had a long string of criminal charges, suspicions and convictions. A simple google search will show you that.

I visited Glensheen today after seeing an article earlier this spring in a local newspaper. While I forgot most of what the article said, I did remember that murders took place. I was curious to see the mansion and to see if I felt anything, as I, too, have had feelings from places and experienced what might be called unexplained events in my life. I didn’t want my knowledge of the murders to sway this. I have been in other “haunted” places and felt nothing, even though I spent the summer in a room that the whole town said was “haunted”. I had several feelings while on my tour today. When I first went in I was amazed by the luxury of the building! In various room there were directions I felt myself pulled, and the first was my the piano. My gaze kept getting pulled to the couch by the window. no reason why. I did feel a little creepy in the hallway, but that may have been due to the darkness of everything. The master bedroom was the first room where I felt anything extensive. I was looking about the room, noting the smaller size of the furniture and was overwhelmed with sadness. I couldn’t really explain it. As far as I have come to understand, that is not the room the murder took place in, yet I felt tears welling up in my eyes and did not know why. I felt a slight strangeness in the room that was the youngest child’s I think….with the bed tucked into a smaller area. The pink and green room was also odd, but certainly not pulling me emotionally like the master room. When I went outside I did find myself pulled to look back up to those windows, again not sure why. I was very uncomfortable in the basement, but it may have been to the musty smell. AS I was making my way to the exit through the laundry room I was alone and felt the need to get out quickly, but yet still do not understand any of this. The only major feeling I had was in the master bedroom. I’d like to do more research and see what it might mean or where the murders really did take place. I just got home a bit ago, and wanted to leave this comment after reading a few others. Any thoughts???

I gave a tour today (and expanded one, so you probably weren’t on my tour) and felt nothing out of the ordinary at all. When were you there? And, to my knowledge, the master bedroom has never had anything odd associated with it. Nothing has happened by the piano either, as far as I know. I will ask next week. The pink and green room is where one of the crimes occurred. The smaller bedroom you mentioned is where the nurse was staying that night, but she was not hurt or killed in that room. Btw, the basement does have a musty odor.

I meant to say, “AN expanded one”–not AND. Oops.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I’ve been reading other posts since I posted mine, and like I said, I’m not sure why I was drawn to certain spots. I just felt an energy pull. Mostly I was amazed at the craftsmanship of the house. My energy pull near the piano wasn’t negative, I just felt myself being drawn to it. The only strong negative feeling was in that master bedroom, again I do not know why. I was on the one hour tour, although after going on it would like to go back again someday and take the longer one.Oh- and I did feel creepy a a few other places, but I was not afraid…well, maybe a little on my way out? Thank you for your input. I’m sure you get tired of all the people talking about their experiences.I have had both positive and negative spiritual experiences and have just learned to be open to it. I think sometimes we are all a little curious about things we don’t fully understand :)

Vicki says:

I don’t really get tired of it and have had two unusual experiences myself. However, as corny as it sounds, I now pray over the house before I enter it. That doesn’t necessarily affect anyone else, but it does for *me*. :-) If you can go there again, you should arrange for a private tour during the winter (November through April). We are only open on the weekends, but will do regular or expanded tours (during the week) for the same price as it would be in the summer if a person calls ahead and arranges it. It’s nice because we are not under as much of a time contraint as in the summer. You can request a docent by name if you want (like me!). If you have questions, you can email me if you want at oldcentralbooks1998 at gmail.com. (Use the normal email format–I don’t put it that way because it attracts spammers.)

Thanks for the tip. We will see. The drive might be a bit more risky in the winter, but having a private tour would be nice. What kind of experiences have you had? Since we were not allowed to take photos I thought on my drove home that I wished I picked up a few postcards. So I know I’d like to come back again at some point. THere is so much to take in…
