Hannah House
This is house is said to have been built by a German immigrant upon arrival in the United States. During the nineteenth century, this house served as a station on the underground railroad. History says that there was a terrible fire one evening and all the slaves were burned to death in the basement. In order to maintain their secrecy, the owners walled up the section of the basement that held the dead bodies. Many have reported hearing screams and moans from the basement. In an upstairs room, a woman died in agony. Today, the room is plagued by blood drenched walls, the stench of decaying flesh, and the sound of a shrill female scream.

I have lived within 4 blocks of the Hannah House my eintire life. For as long as I can remember there have been rumors about the Hannah House. My friends and I spent quite a few nights outside lurking around after mid-night in our teenage years. We never seen anything. But maybe we weren’t paying attention. (We were too busy trying spook eachother.) However. When I was 16 me and 3 of my friends went to the “Haunted House” that they had set up there. The people had split us all up to make us more afraid. And they sent me outside on the second level balcony that faces south. I can only tell you what I saw. NOthing scary. At first I just dismissed it as someone in a costume. But I seen a woman with her hair in a bun wearing early 1900’s clothing. She looked just to my left and walked down the steps. Just as it happend the scary skeleton guy on stilts stuck his head out of a doorway and pulled me in. (I was scared then) But that was it. Nothing special and I have no photos. I never smelled anything strange anytime that I have been there. Other than the oldness of the place. If you want to experience a real haunted house. Try the Nichols Mansion out off W. Southport and Mann rd. That place is very strange.

Thanks, Jason….I noticed that you responded from someone else initially commenting on this place….have you been there, by chance? What do you know about this place? I’d like to know….

The house is in Indy. It used to be at the corner of Mann and Mills on the SW side of town. It was moved to Southport and Mann road (about a block down the road) a few years back. The only thing that I know about the house, is that a little girl was hit by a car out front. I know when they moved the house one of the TV channels were there. They were taking photos of the house and there was an image of the little girl in the attic window. About 5 years ago or so, I drove up to the side of the house (someone is living in it now). I did not put the car in park, I left it in drive and the ground was pretty flat as I drove in. I drove up to the house, about 20 feet or so away from the side of the house. I was close enough to be able to see into the windows. It was about 10pm or so, it was dark out. I had my oldest daughter with me who was 3 at the time. I pulled up, sat there for a few minutes and I went to back out. When I did that, the car died (was a brand new car), I saw a shadow walk by the window (once again no one was living there and it was all boarded up) and my daughter woke up and was screaming bloody murder. I tried over and over to start the car. It took about 10 minutes and the car finally started, I tried to back out and the wheels were just spinning as though something was holding on to the front of the car. I put it in drive and flipped a u turn. Any time I drive by that house rather day or night, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end. I would love to actually go into the house. I am sure that there is something going on in there.

Wow, Kim, that’s a pretty insane story. I live in Kansas and drove to the Hannah Mansion hunting for supernatural events and came up empty. To say the least, I am super-skeptical. Wish you had some proof–have you thought about knocking on the door and talking to the people that live there? Is this place reknown in Indy? Is there any news articles that you think I could locate on the net about this place? Do you know the street address or the name of the family of the little girl that died?
We looked up a ton of “supposed” haunted places in Indy while we visited and checked out many of the probable urban legends.

Well I know that it is called The Nicholson mansion. I do not know the exact address of the house though. I can drive by tomorrow and update this with that info. I wish I had proof as well but the only proof I have is how scared shi*less I am to even drive by the place. I pulled it up on google and found a few different websites about it. I just typed in The Nicholson Mansion. I will have to say this. I have considered knocking on the door but I am not really sure anymore that someone is in fact living there. I know that there is a house load of **** inside. It is kind of weird how it sits but when you drive up Southport Road it comes to a T at Mann Road and you can see the house to your left about 1/8 of a mile away or so. I look at it every time I come to that stop sign and I have yet to ever see a light on inside the house. One of the sites that google has listed has a bunch of pics on it of the house right after it was moved. It of course looks nothing like that now. That is what it looked like when I drove up to it because I knew that no one in their right mind would live in or could live in a house in that condition. It has been painted bright yellow with black or a very dark trim. The funny thing about the house, it looks like when they moved the house they faced the back of the house to the street. I could be wrong but that is what it looks like to me. I never paid any attention to it when it was at Mann and Mills because there were so many trees and the grass was so high you could hardly see the house anyhow. There is still a cemetary that remains behind where the house used to be on Mills Road across from River Run housing addition.
I am right there with you when it comes to being on the fence about believing. I have just had to many things happen to me to not believe that this kind of thing really happens. I am not one that gets scared very easy either. If you are thinking about taking a trip, just let me know, I would be happy to get you to the house and if you would like company I might join you since it is less then 5 minutes from me. You can email me at kpprincess1@hotmail.com. Happy hunting to you.

O and Dave on a side note. This house has been on the top 10 most haunted places in America. So there must be some kind of truth to the fact that something has either happened or is happening in that house.

Ok I must say that no one lives in the Nicholson mansion. They moved the home from Mills & Mann to Southport and Mann. They painted the house and it is no longer white. I’m very sure that it’s yellow and brown. No one can say for sure why this house is haunted. But I do know that if you go to the original location of the home. (northwest corner of Mann Rd & Mills) there is a small cemetary that is located in the area that use to be behind the house. They just built an apartment complex right behind this area, so it’s not as scary as it use to be. I will try to go there one day next week and take some photos of the cemetary and the lot where the house use to reside. I plan on taking my audio recorder as well. Hopefully I will have something interesting to post soon.
(Sorry I didn’t mean to repeat some of the stuff that you said Kim)

I had a similar exeperience as Mizz.Maddness. In October, about three years ago, my friends and I had just left a haunted house in Indy, and we decided to drive past the Hannah House. I had read about it online and was very fascinated, so we pulled into the property. It was probably 11pm at night, and when we pulled into the property a man yelled at us, saying that it was private property and we needed to leave. We apologized from the car window, and made a U-turn to leave (since there was only one entrance). Right as we were about to pull out of the property, an old car pulled in, like a 1930’s one step up from Model T car. The car, however, looked brand new. Inside there was a man and a woman, both dressed in 1900’s clothing. They immediately threw the car into reverse, and sped off down the road. We decided to follow them since we thought this seemed a little odd, but the car sped off and we could not catch up! The car we were in was a 2000 Toyota Camry, yet despite how fast our car went, the car flew down the road and out of sight.

My latest comment is for Becky, who left the comment at the top of the page…..when you visit the mansion, you sign a paper saying you will not publish any pics or videotape that you take while you’re there, so I don’t know if we’ll ever see any hardcore proof, unfortunately….seems like just a bunch of stories get passed around again and again….
